Fast, Perfect Bottled Breastmilk! || How to quickly heat up milk without a warmer!

  • HI THERE!
    I know, this isn't my usual planner-related video, BUT one of my oldest friends has just had her first baby and while I was dropping some of my "mom knowledge" on her it occurred to me that a video would better explain what I was doing... and it's my channel so I'll do what i want! :) So without further ado: How to quickly heat breastmilk without special equipment!
    SUPPPLIES NEEDED:
    breastmilk (duh) or formula - no judgements here!
    microwave safe mug or measuring cup
    microwave
    milk storage bag or zippered freezer bag
    water
    kitchen funnel (optional but highly recommended)
    bottle of your choice
    RANDOM EXTRA THOUGHTS:
    When I heated the first bag of milk I didn't follow my own chart at the end of the video. I was warming 3.5 ounces of milk in water that had only been heated for 90 seconds. For that amount of milk I should have used one cup of water heated for two minutes, and a float time of about ten seconds (like what I did for the frozen milk). I can usually go from frozen to ready-to-drink in under three minutes, and cold to perfectly warm in about 2.
    WATER WASTER!!!!
    Yes, running hot water over frozen milk while microwaving more water can seem wasteful. But think of the science behind it: When you put something frozen into hot water the two liquids will try to equalize temperature resulting in a barely-warm water. The frozen milk will cool the water instead of the water melting the frozen milk. A constant stream of hot water into the container will defrost the milk much faster. YOU CAN TOTALLY SKIP THAT STEP, and just put a frozen block of milk into the microwaved water and just let it float longer.
    Also, one to two minutes of water flowing from a faucet is way shorter than a shower. Just sayin'...
    WHILE YOU WAIT
    I usually start this process with the baby unswaddled and then do a diaper check and swaddle when the water is being microwaved. Do whatever is reasonable for you and your baby, and don't feel bad if you don't get a bunch done in that time. Remember: I'm a childcare provider specializing in infant and toddler care. It took many years and babies to develop my current speed.
    REUSING THE WATER
    I usually use the same mug of water for all the feedings in a day. Just remember that some of the water will evaporate every time you heat it so you should check your water level every other time so you don't accidentally superheat your water.
    SUPERHEATED WATER
    Seriously, it is a major concern. Don't burn yourself or the baby with scalding hot water or get cut on shards of exploded glass/porcelain because you were trying to save time. It's better to not heat the water enough than too much.
    MY MILK FLOATED TOO LONG/IS TOO HOT!
    If you test your milk on your wrist and think it is too hot you can quickly cool it by pouring the milk into a cereal bowl, blowing on it for a few seconds, then pouring it back into the bottle. This is where that funnel comes in handy! Or just take the top off of the bottle. Exposure to air will cool it down faster than letting the steam build inside a closed bottle.
    I think that's it... but I'll update this if I think of more tips! If you want more baby/toddler related videos, let me know!

    I just put a bowl under the kuerig, make it dispense water only and adjust oz so the milk in formula will be covered by water, and swirl as heating. Takes a few minutes but is evenly heated.

      Look up the kiinde kozi warmer as well as the kiinde twist bottle they are amazing! The twist bottle I want to say you can probably get free from target or babies r us registry gift and if they still have it they have great coupons for the storage bags that are great too because they are much sturdier and they attach to any breast pump:)

    • @risplans978
      @risplans978  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Salma Khan you absolutely can. This is just a method for those instances when you need it ready as soon as possible and maybe only have frozen on hand. The bags are single use only as far as I know but there may be options available if you want to avoid using single-use items. Congrats on your pregnancy!

    Do you have to defrost milk before you warm the milk up? And why?thanks.

    • @risplans978
      @risplans978  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Your milk will warm to drinking temperature quickest from a liquid state, so if you already have defrosted milk in your refrigerator that is preferable. But since we are human and forgetful, I give an example of rapid defrost as well. You could just stick the frozen bag of milk into the hot water but it will take a minute or two longer to be an even temperature.

    if you defrost under hot water isn’t that going to kill the nutrients?

    • @risplans978
      @risplans978  6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      No, that only happens with microwaving. Submerging in warm/hot water just brings the temperature up.

    • @risplans978
      @risplans978  6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      According to motherandchildhealth.com freezing the milk is what kills most of the antibodies, and a bit more are lost in thawing but nutrients like vitamins, calories, etc are not lost or altered.

      RisPlans heating up breastmilk in water 104 degrees F and above destroys nutrients.. 104 degrees is basically bellow steaming. Js

    Does it destroy the nutrients in the breastmilk?

    • @risplans978
      @risplans978  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No more so than any other method that uses hot water to warm. Some nutrients are going to be lost by freezing and reheating, no matter what method you use.

    Why heat in the larger measuring cup? Why not just heat with hot water from teh faucet? Seems redundant.

    • @risplans978
      @risplans978  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Because heating from the faucet only heats the part that the flow of water touches and that’s only if your hot water is very hot. Floating it in the larger cup heats a greater surface area and allows you to use a smaller amount of water over all.

  • @steve2547
    @steve2547 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Super-heating explanation is flawed.
    A liquid is super heated when it goes past the boiling point without turning to vapor. For water boiling point is 212 degrees Fahrenheit or 100 degrees Celsius. Water which is boiling cannot go past this point. Any thermal energy that is added to it beyond this point is used to transition it to steam.
    Super-heating often happens in the microwave as most microwave safe dishes have very smooth surfaces and water does not have nucleation points which would help create steam. Once the liquid is super-heated it looks perfectly still. But, if anything porous, like utensils or a zip-lock bag with rough edges, enters the water it causes a violent creation of steam which sprays the super-heated water in an explosion, easily causing severe burns if it comes into contact with skin.
    A very bad day for anyone standing near, no matter how thick your skin might be.

      I just recently became a dad 7 days ago and that was my first question. Hopefully some answers it. I want to buy a thermometer that is food grade so I can measure the temperature of fresh breast milk and try to mimic that same temp when heating.

      Not really bc you can reuse the water. Plus you'll find bottle warmers don't warm that well. Atleast the one I have don't.
