Our midwife just suggested bottles, but never mentioned the need for paced bottle feeding. We were wondering why our little Bee always drank so quickly even though we had bottles with the slow pace teats, and then later she spat out a lot of it - this video helps a lot! Thank you 🙏🏼
Paced bottle feeding helped my son a lot when he had severe reflux! He was bottle feed almost from birth due to complications that I experienced. I'll only ever feed a baby like this now! So much better on their little digestive systems 💕
I honestly cannot thank you both enough right now. Me and my little one (1 month today) are currently struggling with bottle feeding and colic. I'm willing to try anything right now to help him, so thank you so much.
This is such good advice, especially 1:42. When our little one was a baby, we made the common mistake of overfeeding...and then out came the projectile vomit! 😅
I learned this when i had a newborn, but my husband didnt understand why it needs to happen 100% of the time and then my daughter went to daycare so she developed a bottle preference. Did not want to wait for my letdown, which was on the slower side. It was awful. Had to exclusively pump until she was 1. Would not recommend. Im 23 weeks with twins now and you can bet im going to hammer this in to everyone. Another tip is before letting the milk flow that first time, let them suck to simulate letdown for at least a few seconds before getting the milk in their mouth. They dont swallow air, because theres no milk coming in to need to swallow so it acts more like a paci. With my slow letdown 90% of the time this was the issue in getting her to actually latch after a days worth of bottles. She wanted that immediate payoff and that just doesnt happen with my breasts.
Jesus F man. Why do people insist on force feeding their child air!? That's what you're doing when you bottle feed without milk. When a baby latches on the bottle, it becomes air tight. When you pull the bottle away, there is a negative pressure on that bottle which is why there is a such a release of pressure every time. That negative pressure is from air + milk leaving the bottle. Do you ever wonder why pacifiers have no hole in them? Because there is no air movement. While there IS a negative pressure in pacifiers as well, the pocket of air is so miniscule that it's insignificant. But in a bottle, that can be an entire stomach's worth of air they suck in, up until their sucking power is neutralized by the force of the bottle's negative back pressure. Physics is useful in a lot more areas than just space travel and airplanes. This is absolutely physics. Please don't be one of those parents who force feeds their children air because you think it's a "smart" way to pace them. Good grief.
We love paced bottle feedings!!!! We’ve had so much success introducing the bottle as early as the beginning of the second week, and our little son has no problem going back and forth from breast to bottle at two weeks old. No nipple confusion here! I hadn’t been switching sides, and hadn’t thought about that. Super excited to implement into the routine. Thanks for making such great content for parents all around!
I'm 18 weeks pregnant and the como tomo bottles are the ones I chose as well. I'm glad you like them it makes me feel better about my choice. I don't plan to need bottles often but if I have to go to an appointment or something where someone else might need to feed him this is great to know. It would also be cool for my husband to be able to feed him sometimes and get that bonding time.
Thank you so much for this video, it is perfect timing! We've just started introducing our 1 month old to the bottle but I've of course been a little worried about how it would effect breastfeeding. She has pretty short breastfeeding sessions, I assume in part because I have a fast let down. Hoping that we can keep the bottle and breastfeeding experiences similar for her.
Having a fast let down can sometime make switching between breast and bottle a little easier, but not always. Just like you mentioned, the goal is to make the feeds as similar as possible- especially early on.
Love this video! As a foster mom I have needed this instruction as I care for a breast fed baby! I recently purchased the Avent Natural bottles which has been an amazing choice for any baby!!
This video came at the perfect time!I’ve been exclusively breastfeeding but I started pumping yesterday so my husband can feed my baby sometimes. We had a hard time yesterday with my baby eating too fast and then getting reflux. We’re going to try this!
Kurt loved getting to feed Baby Cec so Sarah started pumping early on and made it possible so he could join in the wonderfulness of feeding baby. Hope it all goes well for you three! 🥰
This is so cute, and informative. I am an auntie to two very little guys and hope to have a kiddo someday. You guys are one of the reasons I have confidence that I can figure it out. I am going into the situation with all the tools y’all have provided so THANK YOU!
Omg thank you so much. Our four month old is bottle fed once a day. He is suddenly really impatient at the breast. Like to the point where I can’t get him to nurse longer than 4 minutes per side. I wonder if this is why!
Thanks for this! Super informative and helpful. Can I follow these same steps with formula instead of pumped milk? I exclusively breastfed my first 2 kids, but I'm expecting twins in the next 3 weeks and am not sure how long I'll be able to breastfeed or how long my supply will last. We have bottles and formula as a backup in case I'm not producing enough for two babies.
This video is so helpful! I’ve noticed my baby gets frustrated when I try feeding after she’s had a bottle I’m definitely gonna have to do this next time she has a bottle
Hi guys, thanks so much for this video, its so informative. My first baby is due in March and im hoping to combine feed (i.e. predominantly breastfeed with my husband giving our baby a bottle as and when needed due to me suffering from chronic pain) and i love the idea of paced bottle feeding with expressed milk mimicking the breastfeeding experience. My question is WHEN to introduce the bottle as I see a lot of conflicting advice on the topic??
We were taught how to do this by our IBcLC. My daughter had severe lip and tongue tie and we wanted to be able to move into her nirsing at the breast. Plus we learned that the paced bottle feeding would help strengthen her tongue and other oral muscles. We use the Dr Brown's Options + glass bottles. Extra parts to clean but really helps with gas.
We have been struggling to get our EBF 3 month old to latch well onto a bottle even though we have been giving her a bottle daily since she was about 4 weeks old. Just this week we started the Lansinoh mOmma nipple and it is great! It really does look like a breast nipple and seems to work well with paced feedings.
Not until 4-6weeks to bottle feed if you’re starting off breastfeeding. Depending on the situation, some babies have to start on a bottle but paced feeding will help alot!
Thank you so much for videos like this one. I have a question regarding the transition breastfeed to bootle. My LO is already 1 year old and just wondering if you have special suggestions? she is refusing to take the bottle. Oh is good to mention that we are introducing goats milk instead of my milk but planning to breastfeed at least for the one or two naps. We are trying with the night time transition cause my husband is helping with that. Thank you so much again for your work and support Drs,✨♥️
My breastfeeding 2 months old baby refuses bottle. She keeps pushing it with her tongue or gags. I have tried so many different kind of bottles as well. Any tips?
Perfect timing! I'm going back to work next week and my husband will be bottle feeding at home. Any extra tips for preemie babies? My LO was born at 33 weeks and we just hit her due date.
Same question about preemies. Our LO was also born at 33 weeks and we were told in the NICU that breastfeeding can take extra effort, which could end up burning some of the calories that she's supposed to be taking in for critically needed growth. I'm wondering WHEN is the time to start paced feeding? I want to support my partner's breastfeeding goals but I'm concerned about reducing intake when LO is nicely following a 15 g/kg/day growth curve at the moment. Thanks!
First time mom here and i wish i knew some of these …as soon as we introduced the bottle she refused my breast… when i tried to get her back she would get frustrated and pull on my nipple with her gums which was painful …im still pumping at 9 months and just pouring it in her bottle for feds.. its been mentally draining but hoping to get to 1 year mark.
It can be so challenging to switch back and forth sometimes. Our goal was to make it to 1 year too, and it hasn’t been easy, but we’re getting there! Either way, you can know your baby has had so much love and excellent nutrition thus far, and if you don’t make it all the way to 12 months, that’s okay too.
Is it ok to tilt the bottle completely as it gets to the end or will that flow out too fast for the baby? Great video! I’m finally introducing the bottle to my 7 week old, I’ve been having a positive breastfeeding experience so far but need to get her on the bottle so my husband can feed our LO and I can go back to work soon but I definitely don’t want to stop breastfeeding when I am at home and want her to still take my breast as well as the bottle.
At what age can I start paced bottle feeding? I will only be off work 6 weeks after baby is born and want to continue a successful breastfeeding relationship when at home.
Wouldn’t it be beneficial to give a pacifier during the pause times so the baby continues to work for the milk mimicking when the mother’s milk is slower?
My first was exclusively breastfed and just would not take a bottle. We went with it because I was in school online so I didn't really need to worry about pumping or bottles. With my second who is now 2 months old, I'll be going back to work at 3 months and have a hybrid schedule, so from the get-go I've been pumping excess milk to freeze and getting baby used to a bottle. She's still a little fussy at first but is getting better and better about transitioning back and forth between the breast and bottle. She's a little princess though - if the milk isn't warm enough she just spits it right out lol. Now we're working on having other people besides me feed her so she's used to either dad or grandma, depending on who's watching her when I'm in office.
Thank you so much for this video! Is this there a minimum age that you can start baby be introduced to paced bottle feeding without it effecting breastfeeding?
My 8 day old keeps choking on the bottle and it’s scary what is happening it’s a newborn nipple and bottle with pumped milk in it she takes it fine but sometimes she chokes on it? HELP
We're almost 6 months breastfeeding which was my goal 💖 I'd like to start getting Cali on to a bottle at least once a day but she will only take from me, we've tried different bottles and will still only take feeds from me, any advice? ♥️
Here too!!! We have just crossed the 6mth mark of 100% breast feeding. I’ve tried to pump and give the bottle a few times now, my little one pushes the bottle away.
Ladies!! Here is my tip… have someone not mom and dad make an attempt. My 4 month old refused a bottle and it made me nervous leading up to my return to work 2 weeks ago. The nanny came and he instantly felt comfortable drinking from a bottle. It too about 2 days of practice but can now very easily go from bottle to breast.
@@mrsg1514 I finally found a bottle that my girl would take with a size 1 teat and paced feeding was a dream, she's now 14 months. We made it to 11 months breastfeeding then 4 weeks of formula before cows milk and she has been a dream on the cows milk ❤️
Because my son has a hard time latching because of how my nipples are I have been pumping it seems like he always wants to try breast-feeding opposed to me pumping but because of how frustrated he gets for the time being this is the best solution I could think of until I can find a way for him to latch better. I have tried pumping prior to breast-feeding and it works for a second but he doesn’t stay latched long at all.
My baby is 5 weeks old and drinks about 5oz per feeding. My midwife said that it is too much but she gets upset if we don’t give her that much and shows hunger cues. She said that the baby’s stomach probably got stretched out because we had to use bottles with formula to supplement in the beginning because she wasn’t gaining enough weight. She is strictly on breast milk now for about 3.5 weeks but still wants that same amount. Am I able to regulate this at all or still give her the amount she wants?
Hi!! My little one is 5 months old and we have the opposite problem... He hates every bottle we've tried so far. He only ever eats directly from the breast. I've gone back to work and it's being challenging. Any tips on that?
This happens sometimes unfortunately! It can be hard. Have you tried an open cup or syringe? Also, La Leche League Has a great fb group where you can ask these questions and a knowledgeable leader will answer as well as mamas who have experience with the same problems. Is there a chance you can talk more about ECVs if a baby is breech? I've heard they're excruciating but I don't know too much about what qualifies for it, if you "have" to go that route before a C- section if you have a breech baby, the types of breech babies for it, how long it takes, etc. I found out my baby is breech right now but they there's still time for him to flip but I'm a complex high risk pregnancy & it's also an IVF baby, so I'm horrified about potentially having an ECV. Also, if a patient has G.I.issues prior to pregnancy that have worsened & ends up with a partial rectal prolapse, does that automatically mean a C-section or can you still deliver vaginally despite all the pushing & pressure?
First time mom here! My baby is usually calm and feeds easily but suddenly since last two days he is very fussy and not feeding very well. I feed him myself and even through bottle by pumping. But while sterilising the bottle and breast pump I noticed a lot of calcium deposits from water, i wiped everything with gauze before using them yet baby is fussy. Could the calcium deposits be the reason? Can this affect my baby?? Anyone with any input please help
I have an icu baby. Didnt start breastfeeding from the start. Doesn't want to breastfeed well. The baby latches and delatch.and gets frustrated and angry. Should i give up on trying breastfeeding? Bottle feeds though.
Someone please help me by my question 😢 im feeling that my 1side brest is hurting suddenly!!! There is no brest duck no lumps I’m feeding that same paining side brest !! While drinking it’s not hurting but when I’m touching I fill there is little pain !!! What kind of symptoms are this ???
6 weeks postpartum, rushed to the er with terrible pain in ribs. Got to know I have a lot of gallstones. And I need to get them removed asap. My liver functions got deranged and there’s sludge in the duct. Now I’m on medication for a week and I cannot breastfeed my baby who was exclusively breastfeeding before. He doesn’t like the bottle nor the formula. It’s pretty hard but I’ve got Allah. Hoping for the best!
Keeping a newborn upright? That would be a challenge. I appreciate the effort you put to make this video. Unfortunately babies are not identical and not perfect. Bottle feeding can easily become a challenge if a baby has any special preferences or needs.
Is there evidence to support the claims associated with paced bottle feeding or is it all conjecture? As a new mom, clinician, and researcher I appreciate your evidence based approach but didn't see any references for this video.
I would suggest it especially for formula. Because it allows less air to come in. If to much air comes in when they feed they will be fussy hard to burp and gassy. I have a 4 week old and had to learn the hard way
@@ilovethebeach1877 Thank you for the insight! I'll have to watch this video again and take notes. They said multiple times it was for breastfeeding mothers so I didn't give it my full attention. Thank you!
What kind of bottle ane nipple can I use for my baby ? I used to give bottle for my baby since she was born til 1 month when she turned 2 months I kinda like tired a little bit so everytime she wants milk I’m just doing breastfeeding and now I want her to feed in the bottle but she won’t take it. Please help thank you.
What about burping? When in the process is it ideal to burp the baby using this method? Our pediatrician recommends burping when pausing throughout, but I am wondering if you guys do the same or do the burping before switching sides or at the end? Thank you!
Hello, what type of bottle is this? We are struggling to find a bottle that works for my son. He has microgynathia and is struggling to swallow and latch properly. Any help is appreciated.
My baby had a major heart surgery intubated and extubated twice than start throwing up they discovered that he has hiatal hernia they give him medicine which control his vomiting they suggested surgery he is getting feed by Ng tube he is so afraid to get it by bottle so they said that we would put g tube now they are saying that we might won't need a surgery I am so confused please help me

What do you do with the milk that your baby doesn’t finish? Can you also talk about how often you was they pump and bottles?
wash? you should wash after every use.
So exciting that you both love this method. The syringe can create so many issues if it done just right!
I wish I would have seen this 6 weeks ago 😅 luckily I was doing most of these intuitively but always love hearing from you guys!
If you were already doing this, why do you wish you had seen it sooner?? You didn't need it, right? 🤔
Do you recommend bottle feeding AND breastfeeding a newborn? First time mom still pregnant.

Not until 4-6weeks to bottle feed if you’re starting off breastfeeding. Depending on the situation, some babies have to start on a bottle but paced feeding will help alot!
I wonder this too. I’m due in 2 months 😅
Not usually until 4-6 months but if baby isn't gaining enough weight they will probably want you to supplement with formula.
Love your videos 😊 just learned about this & want to see if it will help my 4 month old have less spit up. Thanks!

We're almost 6 months breastfeeding which was my goal 💖 I'd like to start getting Cali on to a bottle at least once a day but she will only take from me, we've tried different bottles and will still only take feeds from me, any advice? ♥️
I'm in the exact same position. Would love some advice
My current situation. Anyone here have an update on what helped them 😊
@@mrsg1514 I finally found a bottle that my girl would take with a size 1 teat and paced feeding was a dream, she's now 14 months. We made it to 11 months breastfeeding then 4 weeks of formula before cows milk and she has been a dream on the cows milk ❤️
Does the amount per feeding include newborns? Like 2 weeks old? She should be eating 3oz if she’s going 3 hours between feeds??
Very helpful. I am in this phase
I have the same bottle. If there’s less than 3-4oz in it, it’s almost impossible to keep it horizontal, it’s too wide. Any tips?
Doctors i like watching you guys, very inspirational. Thank you

My question is how much breast milk should we be giving them through the bottle in one feeding session? My baby is 1 month of age right now
Have you tried the Bare Air-Free infant feeding system ?
Can you do a video of bottle refusal? Returning to work mom and baby is not a bottle fan

great video and adorable guest star
Because my son has a hard time latching because of how my nipples are I have been pumping it seems like he always wants to try breast-feeding opposed to me pumping but because of how frustrated he gets for the time being this is the best solution I could think of until I can find a way for him to latch better. I have tried pumping prior to breast-feeding and it works for a second but he doesn’t stay latched long at all.
Same here😢
Paced feeding over responsive feeding?
Cecelia is getting cuter 😍
My baby is 5 weeks old and drinks about 5oz per feeding. My midwife said that it is too much but she gets upset if we don’t give her that much and shows hunger cues. She said that the baby’s stomach probably got stretched out because we had to use bottles with formula to supplement in the beginning because she wasn’t gaining enough weight. She is strictly on breast milk now for about 3.5 weeks but still wants that same amount. Am I able to regulate this at all or still give her the amount she wants?
She is breastfeed during the day and bottle fed at night
Always feed your baby if they are still hungry, and not spitting up.
@@ott3rr baby has been spitting up a lot
@@Theherbalempress will she take a pacifier?
@@ott3rr she will occasionally but then pop it out and start eating her hand
What about babies who take a long time to finish bottles? My first son took 30-45 minutes sometimes to finish a bottle.
if i have know its gonna be so hard, i would have pump and bottle fed from the beginning. as a first time mum no one tell u this until its too late
Hi!! My little one is 5 months old and we have the opposite problem... He hates every bottle we've tried so far. He only ever eats directly from the breast. I've gone back to work and it's being challenging. Any tips on that?
O dear... I'm worried too, cause my Mat leave is fast finishing and my little one won't take a bottle as well... Help!
This happens sometimes unfortunately! It can be hard. Have you tried an open cup or syringe? Also, La Leche League Has a great fb group where you can ask these questions and a knowledgeable leader will answer as well as mamas who have experience with the same problems. Yes!!! Us too - now at 7mths old. I’ve bought and tried every bottle there is (I think) she just wants the breast
My baby is 5 months and is using nr1 nipple should I switch ?
Can i use lansinoh bottle for formula feeding
Are there benefits of paced bottle feedings for exclusive bottle fed babies?
I read it helps with colic and signals the baby if they are full or not.
Fantastic video. Thanks guys 😊

Hi my baby only starts bottle feeding at 1 yr, we are pure breastfeeding until 1 yr now she is bottle feeding do i need to pace feed her?
So at what point can you start pace feeding if they need to be sitting upright?
You can do it from birth, you just have to really support their neck. We have been paced bottle feeding since our daughter was about 4 weeks old.
Soon to be mom here, I’m a little confused on how much the baby should be getting. You were talking about oz and I got confused 😂
Hope you figured it out
First time mom here!
Can you guys do a video about newborn colics
Super helpful! Thank you
I have an icu baby. Didnt start breastfeeding from the start. Doesn't want to breastfeed well. The baby latches and delatch.and gets frustrated and angry. Should i give up on trying breastfeeding? Bottle feeds though.
When can we start giving our babies cereal and purees?
Solids should start around 6+ months but prioritize bottle feeds first before solid feeds until 9ish months
Should I pace breastfeeding baby? I have a fast let down and baby spits up most of what he drank if I let him stay on for too long.
I'm currently pregnant and I don't plan to breastfeed at all and only use formula. Should I still be doing this method?
May baby pushes back the bottle out of her mouth and doesn't take the bottle at all..so worried what to do now
Another tip: make sure baby's lips are flanged around the base of the nipple. My favorite nipple is Dr Brown's Premie nipple

What about burping? When in the process is it ideal to burp the baby using this method? Our pediatrician recommends burping when pausing throughout, but I am wondering if you guys do the same or do the burping before switching sides or at the end? Thank you!
