for kirby there is also the copy ability "copy", which you get from swallowing a Tac, and gives you the ability to, well, copy enemies abilities by scanning them.
I mean, it is in the same game as the only game mode where it is useful, Milky Way Wishes
To be fair from a gameplay perspective you *could* do interesting things with the Copy ability. There are a lot of enemies kirby can't eat until he defeats them (Or sometimes not even then), but the copy power could bypass that limitation. Much like the magikarp/gyrados interaction, you could have setups where if you can hold on to the copy power and essentially play powerless for a section or two of the game you could be rewarded with a unique power he couldn't get by inhaling enemies.
@@kevingriffith6011 it feels more like a side effect to be honest, to me it feels as if it was thought as a joke first than if they were actually thinking of adding it for that sole purpose
Im 90% sure the only reason for copy to exist is milky way wishes. Milky way wishes removes your ability to absorb enemies

One of the weirdest things is that they actually nerfed magikarp in scarlet and violet. It got rid of its jumping move which made a lot of sense with magikarp having it, and got rid of its ability to use hydro pump
I'd also consider Farfetch'd to originally be a form of a joke character Pokemon, as it was originally conceived from the a Japanese proverb about how a duck and leek was easy pickings.
I don't know Japanese myself, but I've heard it's similar to the line "A fool and his money are easily parted"
Basically in Gen 1, the only way to get a Farfetch'd was by trading a Spearow, but Spearow evolved into Fearow, which was pretty useful, at least in Gen 1. Farfetch'd, though, couldn't do much of anything in Gen 1, it was unique, but that was it.
I'd also like to add Dunsparce for gen 2 on that note. It's very mediocre stats and overall battle wise, and is super rare, being tied to the new "swarming" mechanic. SV finally buffed it by allowing it to evolve giving you... A rare chance that it would be longer with an extra body segment and still decently mediocre stats.
@jamst5913 I know Dunsparce is also inspired by some folk tale/cryptid, but I can't recall what or the context.
But I feel Dunsparce gets overshadowed by Unown though. Which only knows Hidden Power. Which doesn't exist anymore in Scarlet and Violet....
Wouldn't it be funny if Unown got added to SV and Hidden Power still didn't work? Also GS had Sunkern which had or has the lowest total base stats, which got acknowledged in Pokethlon in HGSS, where it got the highest total stats in that mode.
And from there on out we have stuff like Feebas, Castform (except in PMD where Caatform is OP), Spinda in Gen 3, and Gen 7 had Pyukumuku...cute design, incredibly stupid gimmick that shouldn't have made it past the drawing board.
Farfetch’d isn’t a joke character per se in gameplay inability but definitely in concept. One of the characters that its pun concept translated poorly.
(A lot of Japanese dick dishes include spring onions/leeks and that’s my favourite way too. A duck bringing its own leek means multiple fortunes happening at the same time.)
Who else here finds it a bit ironic that farfetch'd and dunsparce got evolutions later in the series?
I used to think magikarps were pathetic when they flopped around until I had the sudden realization that the flopping might be a sign of their determination to find new bodies of water to live in. It could be another of the many reasons for why they are so successful everywhere.

god, i love a good joke but actually making sleep kirby a viable option for battle is immensely funnier, missed opportunity for forgotten land with the third dimension n all

Sleep Kirby is actually used in speedruns of Kirby's Adventure, to wrong warp to the credits.
Along the lines of Magikarp I'm reminded of the Gadabout/Goof-off class in Dragon Quest III. They have terrible stats except amazing luck, ignore your commands a quarter of the time, and when they do choose their own action most of the time do nothing, hurt themselves, give themselves or party members status conditions, make someone lose their turn, and a slight sprinkling of beneficial effects.
At level 20 you can job change them to the Sage class, the most powerful magic user in the game, the only class that can do so without the rare "Words of Wisdom" tome, of which there is only 1 or 2 in the game depending on which version you are playing.

I remember Custom Robo having the Can and Chick robo sets. Both of them were special like Illegal Weapons. But unlike them, they are even weaker than most standard robos and weapons. But with some skill, anyone can beat an opponent with them.
My favourite joke fighting characters are Norimaro from Marvel vs Capcom who was a collab with a Japanese comedian, and Hornet from Fighting Megamix which Sega jammed in a car into a fighting game. Speaking of Hornet, Daytona USA has an unlockable ride called Daytona UMA (uma means horse in Japanese).
The fish salesmen are scamming themselves. I would kill for a Gyarados that early in fangames

Wild Magikarps also got Hydro Pump.
I encountered one and sent out an underleveled pokemon just to level it up, only for it to be defeated by a Hydro Pump.

Honestly, I kind of wanted Magikarp as a joke character in Pokken. You would basically button mash to make it flop about. To add to that it turns out that there was a removed character in the arcade version of Tekken 3 called Sake who...was planned to do the exact thing. That would be such a great callback
That said Magikarp as a pokeball Pokémon in Smash. Just flops around like Golden but has huge knockback if hit

Damn! I need to finish playing Kirby and the Forgotten Land. I live streamed it day 1 but thanks to JoshScorcher also live streaming it that day, barely anyone watched. Not to mention I hardly ever live stream. I'll probably just finish the game without streaming it at all which is what I would normally do anyway.

Pokémon Legends (one of the earliest Pokédexs in canon btw) calls Magikarp a "feeble, pitiful imbecile". On top of entries in several other games calling it "the most weak and pathetic Pokémon in the world."

Sleep kirby's Early Wake-Up can actually do damages and break blocks, it's not much though.
The first Pokemon wanted to teach you about evolution in a form of perseverance paying off; I’d argue characters like Metapod and Magicarp weren’t made as a joke but lesson.

Honestly, I would say Cosmog is also a joke character as well, it can only learn Splash and Teleport.
Surprised neither Shigechi or Iggy from JoJo’s made it onto this list. Although they’re not totally useless in All-Star Battle, Iggy has that ugly first appearance alt costume that turns the end of his ultimate into a fart. And Shigechi isn’t very good and is just a really weird choice on the roster.
