I'm currently doing a similar journey, however I am going back and doing it on every generation of the games including original releases and remakes.
I am done red, almost done blue, and working on my living Pokedex in yellow.
Just picked up gold and silver the other day and trying to hunt down a authentic copy of crystal for a reasonable price.
Also need a copy of ruby, 2 copy's of emerald and a copy of leaf green.

The Magearna you get for completing the Living Dex isn't shiny, it's just a different colour variant. The actual shiny doesn't look like that.
I think the shiny magearna looks like a ultra ball but it has never ben given out

Started the same journey about a year ago. I’m on Gen 5 now and man I’m here you tell you, you got this! Lost my swampert back in the day to a dried battery but learned that it isn’t too hard to add a new battery. Everglade the Swampert is now waiting for completion of black and white to be transferred up to home. Godspeed
I feel your pain. I'm not doing the recording yet, but I am doing a masochist's living dex. Otherwise known as the Master Pokedex challenge by Bird Keeper Toby. I'm doing pretty good on it. I am technically halfway done, by which I mean I have at least caught over half of the required pokemon. However, I still have to evolve a good number and then transfer them to home. As far as a living national dex I am 61% caught, 55% evolved, and 47% Transferred

Deep respect for this. I traded with myself with a LeafGreen last year, and got the Living Kanto Dex in the FireRed from my childhood. I know my limits, so my journey has already ended. The little video of the Living Dex, and the picture of the Kanto Certificate, which I shot on my phone, are some of my most treasured items and accomplishments in any video game. I'll definitely be checking your later videos of your own journey. It's going to be a while, I'm sure, but judging by this video alone, you'll make it very interesting as well.

I have a very similar story to yours... uncannily similar in fact...and I too have recently started the undertaking of making a living Dex without ever completing an actual regional Dex. I didn't even realized I would get the Shiny Magearna for doing so and it looks so beautiful. It's going to motivate me to the end. I have about half of the 900 or so Pokemon already. You're not on this journey alone

Yes BUT I want to make sure I get the Pokémon from their original region. So like I want the Gen 3 mon from ORAS and gen 2 from HGSS etc. but yes I don’t need ALL of them but I got both games from each region lol the gameboy was a little much for me especially with the capture card 😅
I just completed my living dex a couple months ago. Was very difficult but that action replay was a godsend lol. You said the mythicals and i was hoping you would just use an action replay because its super easy and convenient. I know its a year late but great job and great video!

Actually, the closest you can get to a time machine for many mythicals is the original distribution cartridges handed to GameStop/Toys R Us/etc employees by Nintendo that were used during the original events. These were SUPPOSED to be destroyed, but many were either smuggled out, actually destroyed but later repaired, or in the case of two events, literally heisted en masse from an old warehouse containing a ton of them and sold on the black market. These are hard to come by though, and some are quite expensive.
I personally own 3, though I plan to track down and purchase more over time. Atm, I have the cartridges for the shiny legendary dog trio (also contains an unreleased Celebi event), Meloetta, and the Toys R Us Dragonite (not a mythical, but neat because it was set to level 50 as it was intended for competitive play, but actually ended up not being allowed in competitive as Dragonair doesn't evolve until level 55). I also tracked down an original Eon Ticket E-Reader card.
I ended up acquiring all these because I, like you, felt a need for redemption in the form of a living dex. Several years back I had my entire collection stolen by an ex roommate. Every childhood Pokémon gone forever. I was depressed and stopped playing Pokémon entirely for some time, but eventually I started to rebuild my collection of games. Now that my collection is rebuilt to it's former glory, I still need to actually play through them and rebuild my Pokémon collection. But I wasn't satisfied with just a simple playthrough or even with my collection as it was. I decided that I would play the FULL experience of every generation. This meant every side game, accessory, or event I could possibly get my hands on. Everything from the Colosseum Bonus Disk Jirachi to the Pokémon Ranger Manaphy; from long gone GameStop events to hidden areas within the Poke'walker. It's been a long journey so far, and tbh, I've still barely scratched the surface, but I've learned an incredible amount about the franchise I had never known before, whether it's obscure glitches or even unreleased files hidden deep within distribution cartridges never intended for a player's hands. Even if it kills me, I'm gonna Catch 'Em All.

I just found this now when I myself have started to look into completing my living dex. The path seems so long and arduous but this gives me hope and motivation. Your story telling is kindling that fire in me. I may not be able to complete it anytime soon but. I will.

I recently completed my living dex mostly thanks to omega Ruby's distortions and the max raid adventure. I only really decided on a living dex a couple of year after I had finished omega Ruby but I never played dp, gs, or xy. I wish i could have brought my charazard from fir red all the way to now but I had resarted the game when I was so much younger.

Also since I achieved a living dex here’s my advice:
1: you can actually trade with fake games (fake bw/b2w2) meaning for the expensive hell of gen 4 and gen 5 as long as you have one legit game in each you can trade them
2: Gen 5 and 4 games have a DNS exploit that allow you to access events to get them without an action replay…gen 5 is easier but it’s something
3: I’m coming along for the ride, I support your cause and considering you’ve dipped really deep into getting a load of games for this I wanna see you go through. I believe in ya and now you got one extra person rooting for ya!
Are you able to still transfer the pokes up from there to home using the dns exploit?

Even though I had been playing Pokemon since it's first release complete the Pokedex felt like a dream I could never achieve. I never had the patience to fully complete the Dex.
Back in 2014 I got back into Pokemon and made it my goal to complete not just the regional Dex,not just the national Dex,but to have one of every single Pokemon in order.They we're also releasing so many event legendaries during the time and decided it was now or never to finally complete that dream I had since red and blue.
I started my new journey with a fennekin and it took me about two years from there of trading, replaying certain Pokemon games multiple times,breeding,and by postgame getting blissey bases in Omega Ruby to greatly speed up leveling,using the battle cafes in Pokemon X and Y.I used Pokemon Bank to help organize my boxes easily so by the end of my journey I had really organized pc with every Pokemon in order of Dex entry.
It was extremely time consuming process I almost wanted to give up multiple times,but I pulled through and thinks to the events coming out at the time for all the legendaries.I managed for the first time to not only complete the Pokedex,but to have one of everything,and even had all the elusive Pokemon like mew,celebi,Arceus etc.It felt good getting the diploma and getting to gaze at my hard work. I also went back and completed the Pokedex in red.
I will never attempt making a living dex in my life ever again though atleast I managed to mark it off my video game bucket list challenges. I don't have the patience anymore to complete the Pokedex nowadays much less another living dex.

i've completed the living pokedex back in Gen VI in Omega Ruby. Though I haven't captured every pokemon in their original version (pokemon like combee, munchlax, feebas would prove to be too much trouble). I spent a lot of time reading bulbapedia to figure out the easiest place to get each species. So there were some games I didn't need to buy.
I also didn't need an Action Replay for the mythicals. I used the DNS trick to connect to a fan-made server which gives all the mythical pokemon by reproducing the events exactly as they were back in the day.
The most fun part of this project in my opinion was to play through all the games. Well most of them. Some of them I'd stop once I had all the pokemon unique to this version.
Breeding was quite grindy. The worst part was doing all the evolutions with special conditions. The level up evolutions were easy with japanese secret bases in Omega Ruby, fighting three level 100 Blisseys at a time was kinda OP.
Then a few months after completing the project, my Omega Ruby cartridge corrupted itself and is now unplayable, with all my pokemon stuck on it. So I restarted the project again, but stopping at Gen V this time, on Black 2 since It's my favorite pokemon generation ever and I don't really care for what's after.

My brother played Pokémon Red fresh of the production line, he never did finish the game.
He actually passed away a little while after buying it, a few weeks prior to being born.
Obviously, I never got to meet him due to this. Though it did leave its mark on my older sibling, who then showed me how to play her games.
Eventually when I asked for a Pokémon game of my own, my mother let me play me play my brother’s old game.
I know it’s stupid but playing on that save file was just about the only thing I had that my brother ever touched. Looking back, it left its mark on me and I’ve since played almost every last Pokémon game that’s came out since.
Honestly I’m so glad I found you on tiktok, twitch and here on TH-cam. Your storytelling and editing are on another level. I’m not only impressed, but I’m enthralled. Keep up the amazing work man…for Jason.

Excellent video. I like how dramatic you made this quest. :) I'm nearing the end of my 100% Crash Bandicoot series quest, and am keen to dive deeper into Pokemon. I also desire a living dex, and honestly am quite close on it, it's just not organised. But more so, I want to play the stories I never played. Mainly Gen 4 and 5.

My earliest memory involves me crying in my crib while my family watched tv (the news) in the other room.
i play pokemon since 1999 and yet, legends arceus was the first game that i've completed entirely. I came close to that back in 2014 with pokemon X. Back then i had 648 of 718 mons. And then i just lost interest in pokemon x and never touched it again until like a month ago when i booted up my old 3ds xl with x still in it. Now i have 2 pokemon games under my belt that i can call completed.

"Living dex with every Pokémon caught in the region they first appeared in" is exactly what I'm doing now. Currently on Gen 2, though I've done the prep for Gen 3. Fortunately, I have no intention of getting a living dex in each individual game, which I think gets out of hand fast, having to re-catch hundreds of Pokémon I already have. So living dex in Pokémon HOME seems like a not only a good compromise, but then catching them all actually goes somewhere beyond purely the individual copies of the games that you own.
Lyra Made a Website has a pretty good tool for the first two gens, but it is a bit hyper focused on living dex for individual games.
Outstanding video! I love pokemon and love this kind of sick projects. I am doing something kinda similar since 2018, still ongoing. I want to create a Living Dex (all pokes plus all forms available in HOME) with mons from different games/regions and with the balls of my preference. For example, I need a Rattata from FireRed in a luxury ball, or a Wartortle from Alola in a lure ball, and so on. And they all need to have the all League Ribbons that are possible. It's very time consuming but little by little it's growing! :) Good luck man, I've just started to follow and will be checking all your vids from now on!

I bought a used copy of Platinum 6 years ago, but I've finally been sticking to a playthrough recently. It's my first game, and I felt let down when I realized how many pokemon I can't get due to trade evolutions.
I haven’t played Pokémon since I was 12 with Pokémon y, turned 19 two days ago and I’ve got a sudden urge to come back, get a switch, another ds if need be and complete this
I’m 91% of the way through my ORAS living national dex now, only around 60 more Pokémon to go!
I don't know if you know this or not but that Magearna you get for the NAT DEX completion in home isn't shiny. It's the original Magearna. The original Magearna had a shiny and the red goes to black. Normal Magearna has a shiny but it was only available in home until the swsh dlc came out. It's just all a deep silver color with red eyes. There is no legitimate way to get a shiny Magearna.

As someone who is currently working towards the national pokedex generation by generation good luck, I've completed generation 1 through 5 excluding mythical pokemon so far and am currently working on gen 6.
Ways to obtain most mythicals in a 'legit' enough of a way:
Mew:
-Virtual Console game games, Gen 1 you can use the famous mew glitch to encounter one and in gen 2 you can transform another pokemon of yours into a mew and just change its moves and bam, legitimate mew
-Pokeball Plus - An unopened Pokeball plus will have the ability to gift you a single mew, only one per pokeball plus
-BDSP - Mew is just kinda given to you as an in-game gift from some old couple if you have save data from a previous game
-Pokemon Go - a lot of mythical can be caught from there and transferred up into Home after you do their mission quest things
-Pokemon Emerald - Another cool glitch possible to do is in Emerald where you can go through a bunch of steps to eventually end up teleporting yourself to the island the mew event was in, by hatching a glitch egg
-Gen 4 Wifi Exploit
Celebi:
-Virtual Console - You can get a celebi in the gen 2 games between two processes, either doing glitches to make a pokemon turn into a celebi, or just, beat the elite four in a copy of crystal virtual console, you get access to a celebi event when you do
-Pokemon Go mission
- Gen 4 wifi exploit
Deoxys:
-ORAS postgame event, you can just catch one lol
-Emerald and FrLg - Same as the mew glitch in emerald, you can teleport yourself to the deoxys island, i believe the glitch works in Fire red leaf green too if you transfer over pomeg berries
-Pokemon Go Raids, whenever they might show up back in them
Jirachi
-Pokemon Colloseum Bonus Disc, you get a free one by connecting your copy of Ruby or Sapphire
-Pokemon Channel (PAL only) - Europe only game but you can get a gift jirachi from this and go through the same process as above
-BDSP - You get Jirachi aswell from an old couple, ontop of the mew
-Pokemon GO Mission again
Manaphy/Phione
-Pokemon Ranger, have an unused game and beat it, send manaphy egg over, hatch and breed it for phone

- Void glitch in Diamond Pearl that'll let you clip through the game and make your way towards the shaymin event area

This is awesome! I’ve had very similar ideas recently and collecting the games myself
my journey to my own complete living dex was wild. i had a very eclectic series of games to work with: platinum, black, sun, ultra moon, and shield. but, through some combination of skill, patience and gts bargaining, i got it. there’s still a few mythicals that evade me, but i’ll get them someday. just you wait, marshadow, just you wait.
I really love the story telling of this video! It makes it feel so dramatic, also, I completely agree, mythical Pokémon are garbage, but with the gen 4 and 5 games, there is a way to obtain a good few of them using DNS! Not to mention the new bdsp and PLA games give you like 5 :> unfortunately I am missing Diance, Volcanion, Magerna and Zeraora which I just slightly missed the boat on 😅

You can catch all pre- Gen 6 Pokémon in gen 6 besides the mythical Pokémon
Correct BUT I want to get them in their original regions as much as possible. This is doable except for just a few like Celebi in HG/SS etc
Just imagine your earliest memory is with a Gameboy in your hand before even knowing what it is, and not maybe playing with parents. Still cooler than mine, mines being on a surgery table "eating" a banana flavoured surgical device. The modern world is crazy. Anyway this video is great. Mad production value.

easiest games to complete a living dex? Red and Blue, hands down, hell, you can even obtain the “mythical” pokémon of that generation through a glitch, so it can be truly complete

Just had your video in my TH-cam suggestions. It definitely was emotional to watch.
I'm slowly working on it myself, on top of doing the r/PokemonRibbons ribbon challenge. I did buy two original DS capture cards for my journey, with a 3DS capture card from Loopy hopefully on the horizon once I start working again. But it's always nice to see other people doing these awesome and emotional journeys on their own.

For gen 3: My man here is in dier need of an R4 card. That way you can download entire save files of people who have stored legit mythicals from official Nintendo event cardridges.

In retrospect, I'm so happy and lucky to have been able to receive such a big amount of events. I have a shiny living dex all the way up to gen 5 (okay minus a few impossible ones but you get the point)
And I'm on my way to getting the normal living dex up to gen 7. It's so much harder and special than just beating the games. And man I miss pokemon that are gone from gen 3 :( I was such a dumb kid looking back 😭
Even if you somehow found your copy of FireRed, I'm pretty sure once you start it, you'd be greeted with a "corrupted save" because of the internal battery. Much like I was with my Pokemon Silver =/
FireRed and LeafGreen doesn't actually have an internal battery. I've got a copy of each. That's why you couldnt get espeon and umbreon without trading. It's only in R/S/E gen 3 games that have it.

I am currently trying to complete a pokemon national dex myself and I realized that the final goal is pokemon home so I just catch lets say a kadabra in kanto then I transfer it into pokemon home. Then I trade it to a friend who has one of the switch games I have (I'll basically need all of the pokemon switch games so this is no big deal) and then it will evolve and then bring back into pokemon home.
the action replay was a waste of money
play with your internet settings of your ds and boom! get the ds wifi events as if they were current. no extra costs

I like how now we have the trade evo’s wandering in the wild like sw/SH with alakazam or legends arceus with golem. And we also have mythicals we can get with legends and bdsp like arceus or darkrai

Im a bit late but you can still buy capture card install kits from optimize for about 120USD until recently a modder called merki did new nintendo 2ds xl installs now he only does og ds installs for the foreseable future.
Yeah I’ve seen that recently. When I made this video it was late 2020 and the market was DEAD. Since then there’s like random bursts of availability from a few sellers, but I’m still happy with my 3DS it works great but I definitely wish it wasn’t $1200 🤤🤤
A few months after this I had been sitting on a brand new super top tier PC with no GPU and had to bite the bullet and spend $1000 on a 2060…. It was a wild time.
