Without ever knowing about this challenge, this is mostly how I actually went about doing my own Living Dex! I even actually have a few of the special Star Pokémon from here, like the Yellow Pikachu, the Poke Ball Plus Mew, all of the Totem sized Pokémon, and all of the former Titans. The only thing I’ve been working on that this challenge doesn’t have is collecting one of every Alpha Pokémon in Legends, including Gender variants!
Well, you may as well go for every pokemon with every (available) ribbon, and mark, too.

I asked about the update on every video since November
Ever since Scarlet and Violet got compatibility to Pokemon Home, it feels very satisfying to have completed an up-to-date Living Dex including all forms while working on registering every single Shiny Pokemon which I'm now about 3/4 of the way done (not doing a Shiny Living Dex because that's really asking for a lot!)
Can't wait for all of the DLC Pokemon to come out with them to really fully complete a Pokedex of all the mainline Switch Pokemon games!

I’m 78% done and fully committed to it around when the last video came out. I did a lot fairly quickly but this last few hundred Pokémon are the most difficult to get. I’m glad you did this star tierlist. I don’t know if it was me specifically who inspired you guys, but I did mention the silver stars in the discord

I love this challenge. Found out about Pokémon Home in May 2022 and I’ve been doing an altered challenge since August 2022. Mine is different because it’s just an “oldest region living form dex”. So I’m not getting Ho-Oh and Lugia from the GameCube, but I’m still getting every mon besides mythicals from their oldest games. So far I am have way through my first go through of gen V (beat White but not White 2 for Zorua)

This shall be dubbed by myself as: The Hardcore Collector's Challenge/The God Oak challenge
Man the first thing I thought of when he mentioned Star Pokemon was the max raid event with G Max factor Hattrem, that I have recently either lost, or more likely released during my Pokemon Home cleanup, that was an obvious mistake, rather than g max hatterene.
And that also makes me think of all the "illegal" gmax pokemon (pre-evolved kanto starters, evolutions of meowth and eevee that were possible, and of course milcery)
I'm taking up the "Breeder's Challenge." You hold on to perfect 6IV Pokémon of each type with each type of BREEDABLE abilities. I also have taken up an "Archiver's Challenge" to get as many untouched copies of rare event Pokémon to keep them "alive." The second one is literally impossible, but I do it as best as I can.
I got back into Pokemon with X/Y in late 2013, decided I wanted to try and "catch em all" after beating the remake of my first Pokemon game, Sapphire, sometime in 2014-2015, and by Sun/Moon in early 2017 I had completed my full living (non-shiny) dex.
All 802 unique Pokemon, + any and all of their regional variants, different forms or patterns, different genders if the species had any sexual dimorphic traits, sizes (which at the time only applied to Pumpkaboo/Gourgeist, and Alola's Totem Pokemon)...
I actually attribute this to one of the main things that disenfranchised me from the Pokemon games and why I haven't owned one since Ultra Moon... Not that it burnt me out - I really only played casually, mostly on the go, and would have totally kept going if I could - but that I *couldn't*.
With each new installment, in my goal to catch them all I was seemingly being stopped at more and more turns by arbitrary roadblocks - hard-coded limitations, oversights or inconsistencies, paywalls (beyond the $60Aud price tag of a new game every other year, $120 if I wanted both versions), etc...
One of the first things that got in my way was the limited boxes on each game, which were already mostly filled up with the Pokemon I'd caught during my playthroughs - I eventually caved and paid for a Pokemon Bank subscription, which was where my living dex would call home so that I wouldn't have to split up my collection between multiple games... or so I thought. There were a few Pokemon I still couldn't deposit, namely the cosplay Pikachus, Unbound Hoopa, fused Kyurems, and later Ash-Greninja, 10% Zygarde and half of Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon's Totem Pokemon... and probably a handful of others I'm forgetting. They also couldn't hold items, meaning a bunch of Pokemon with alternate forms depending on their held item that I had previously collected all of and had displayed next to their default counterparts in my in-game boxes were stripped of those forms after being moved to my bank (especially painful for the 19 Silvallys I'd replayed all of Pokemon Sun for 19 times). Even my Furfrous had their hairstyles reset once deposited, it was very demotivating to say the least. I'd managed to get every exusive event Pokemon up until USUM, including all the Ash-hat Pikachu's, Legendaries/Mythicals, and rare forms like Dusk Lycanroc, but for whatever reason Zeraora wasn't distributed here, and eventually it became clear that some Pokemon forms just weren't ever going to see the light of day - like original Pokebal Magearna, or AZ's Floette. I lived in a rural town with no landmarks, and no mobile reception even if I did, so (a pre-pandemic) Pokemon Go was completely unplayable for me, so Meltan ended up being the final nail in the coffin. A few years ago I was feeling nostalgic and booted up my 3ds to find my Pokemon Bank had been completely wiped because I hadn't renewed my subscription for it, which definitely sucked and still stings to think back on all that time and energy I'd invested to have nothing left to show for it now...
I know all about the "dex-it" issues with the Switch games, and have my thoughts on that which I'll reserve for now, but I've recently heard that even some variants of Pokemon you could still transfer no longer exist in the new games at all, like Ash-Greninja - effectively just making it a normal Greninja with a unique original trainer ID.
Im not too worried about all the different varient (shadow, outfit, etc) I'm mostly trying to get all 1010 Pokemon in HomeDex
I've been working on the base master dex challenge (plus only my OT when possible, only regular pokeballs if possible, all variants, original games only [RSE, no ORAS, for example]) ever since your first video about the challenge. The only things I have left are to beat PLA twice for enamorus forms and 2 of the vivillon. So close, thanks for the challenge!
I always figured this approach to a living dex would be super interesting to do, but never followed up on the concept. So when I saw this challenge (or a much older version of it) I went for it and basically replaced my entire form dex with the appropriate regions. It was great to play through the old games again.
For me it was especially fun to collect all the special/spinoff/etc Pokemon that you call Star Pokemon. And I had a lot of fun coming up with my own definitions of these star Pokemon. Will definitely check out your "official" list to see if I missed anything:) I am a rather old fan (30 years old) and basically have all the games and peripherals at my disposal so I was happy to put them to good use again,
I am at a point now where I would need to go for the full shiny living dex because I cannot think of any other special Pokemon anymore to collect:D.

I have spent many an hour just spinning around in my bathroom for those dream radar Therian forms. I also have the shiny legendary bird trio from pokemon yellow VC and that was before they fixed the IV formula to be in line with the cartridge versions. They switched up the attack and defense IV for some reason and that did not get fixed until gen 2 VC came out. That should be a gold star challenge right there. They are all technically 1 in 8192 odds like pre gen 6 odds would be but the set up takes a while.
Love simplifying this down and making most things stars!
Currently on gen 3 working my way up!
Ok but like imagne this..... Titanium star, if you get every single possible form of spinda, you'll have to dedicate your entire bloodline to get it, and i love it.
I've never been interested in a true living dex, but lately with the extra save files on the switch and the shenanigans in pokemon go, ive been ark-ing all my pogo mons to swsh as I can and I noticed that in some instances I had enough of a pokemon line/species to make a switch era living dex, with occasional input from pokemon I caught in early gen 8 when I was obsessed with raid pokemon lol.
Now this is a challenge worth accepting. Maybe I'll finish it this time?
I like this new challenge much better. I much prefer having every pokemon in the normal challenge being from their game of origin, and then all of the special encounters being stars at the end

If it’s not already, getting a “legit” shiny manaphy in D/P using the glitch to circumvent the shiny lock should be a challenge

@@BlazingJ972 it is, but you can get around it by trading the egg after it’s been received. TLDR trading the egg scrambles the PID and gives you 1/8192 odds

I started working on this challenge in March of last year from the very beginning with barely any Pokemon in Bank or Home and it has been really fun to complete.
Most of my save files were deleted so over the past year, I have played through every single Pokémon game all over again and it has been a blast revisting some games I enjoy like Sun and Moon, learning to love the games I used to hate like X and Y, falling in love even more with games like Red and Blue, or just having my first time experiencing like playing basically any gen 3 game!
This franchise really has so much variety in its gameplay that each one almost feels unique from the last!
But obtaining all of these Pokémon for my Dex has really given me a Pokémon experience like never before. It feels so fun to capture all 1010 of these unique creatures, and it made me feel like a kid again discovering these magical monsters for the first time.
Whether I'm sitting at home pulling my hair out over Battle Revolutions, luck based minigames or getting super excited over finding a Feebas on my sixth tile in Hoenn it has genuinely been the most fun I have had with Pokémon in years.
Thank you Toby for helping me love everything about this franchise all over again!
Playing Colosseum and XD also gave me an appreciation for Double battles and how to do cool strategies and it's what got me into trying competitive Pokémon!

I really love this challenge. Right now I’m just trying to complete the base loving dex, although I’m roughly getting the Pokemon from the gen they were introduced in.
I always pitch what I have, the PokéArk! Not just form differences, but two by two, male and female of every Pokémon with a gender.
Also, I've nicknamed EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM. Not joking, still struggling to name a last few Gen 9 guys after historical figures 😵💫
Hi Toby. I was thinking that a cool addition to this challenge as maybe a gold and maybe a platinum star is getting a gholdengo from Pokémon go. It is a very hard challenge, but it could be a good one.
You could also try the Single Tera Dex. Catch every different pokemon form in S/V with the same same tera type. (Ex. All normal tera type)
The harder version, is the True Tera Dex. Catch every different pokemon form in S/V with one of each tera type. (Ex. Have 18 Sprigatito with each one having a different tera type)
I'm going to kind of do this except it's Eevee in every tera type

I have a living gender form Dex where I have a male/female of every Pokémon regardless of if it has a gender variant. This required reading eevees from VC red/blue/yellow to GSC to check if I got the female and then transfering back to then put it into bank from there so it kept its kanto VC mark. It also meant I had to do multiple playthroughs to get male/female of all kubfu/urshifu for example. Took me 3 years 😅
I will need to check if I've got the stars but I reckon I probably have half or under just from my natural collecting over the years. I don't have a gamecube so I might try and get one with some of these games to get the Ho-Oh and Lugia but honestly I prefer having my Johto mons all say Johto VC than randomly having some from other regions. It just is jarring for me. I could keep them in a separate box so I still have the stars though.
I am currently playing through Sun again just because I loved the story but I have Partner Pikachu switched in as my starter because I've never played with an event Pokémon on my team!
Something that I've been doing lately is catching Pokémon in modern games that can evolve into Hisuian forms and using Home to transfer them to Hisui to evolve. I just think it'll be really cool to have things like a Paldea native Hisuian Goodra or Hisuian Liligant. Hell, if I wanted I could probably go one step further and transfer Goomy and Petilil from their home regions and evolve them in Legends Arceus. That could be fun. Even the ones that are hisuian in their base forms can usually be bred with their Paldean counterparts. Unfortunately Voltorb can't be bred in the same fashion, so as far as I'm aware the only way to have Hisuian Voltorb in modern pokeballs is through Pokémon Go.
Since X&Y, I have been updating what I have been calling my Noah's Arc Pokedex. It is every pokemon, every form, with both male and female where available.

I've actually been sorta trying to complete this challenge, but since I don't have a 3ds or pokemon bank I've been just wildly trading in Pokemon Home for every pokemon with a Bank symbol I can see. XD
About to doing this challenge, can't wait but I'm also gonna try to do shiny for a chunk of them so that'll be fun

the only problem with that last bit regarding Black 2 and White 2, is that scalpers is going to make finding a legit copy at a reasonable price is going to be hella hard. Especially for us Australians.
Had to shell out 150 for just pokemon White.

I just found this out now but this is actually how i got my living dex when I found out the eshop was shutting down I finally decided to complete my pokedex in every game it just so happened to be easier getting them all from 1 game then transfering them to the next gen
I tend to get a full dex per game but having got limitted box space i may rethink how im ordering my HOME account. Was such a relief that GEN 9 Home update continued the trend of pokemon being freely transferrable back and forth between games.
Its a shame though that LETS GO is still in an awkward place. I have a complete seperate set of boxes for these pokemon. Including my shiny lets go dex (thats still in progress).
I wonder if Home could provide some update rather than LETS GO itself. Its already confusing people as GO > HOME...cannot go to lets go. But GO > LETS GO > HOME works through the GO Park. Its a shame GO pokemon going to home turn into the Sword/shield format.
Their transfer diagram is also misleading in a few ways when it comes to LETS GO and GO. You can go back and forth with home and lets go as a storage. But the pokemon has to be have been caught in lets go. However it can no logner return once its gone up a game

A complete living dex is impossible if you don't play GO, Meltan anf Melmetal are only obtainable via hacking as they are identified incorrectly as "mythical".

@@KipNinjogu it'd be a lot better if they legendary instead of mythical as then they could obtained via gts, they are impossible to obtain if you don't play GO and there hasn't been a event for them in the main games. Thus, the 100% living dex challenge is nigh impossible.

One major thing I think should added here is to avoid evolution where possible, if the pokemon can be caught in the wild. So, for example, have to get Palafin from a raid den, etc.

I’m only missing standard Zarude, Koraidon, attack and speed Deoxys, rapid strike Urshifu, and all but one forms of Alcremie. Oh yeah, and 3bit dudunsparce, genuine polteageist, and family of 3 maushold.
You know, I'm realizing that Pokémon Home only has 6000 slots. With currently over 1000 Pokémon, most of them having 4 forms each(male, female, male shiny, female shiny) and a lot of them having additional forms (Cap Pikachu, Rotom, Alcremie, etc) an All-Forms Living Dex will be taking up an uncomfortably large percentage of that storage, especially since I want to have a few backups of each first-form Pokémon from the first game they appear in for future Regional Evolutions(ex: Virtual Console Exeggcute to Alolan Exeggutor)
That's probably at least 5000/6000 slots just for the Living Dex and future proofing, not much space left for any competitively built Pokémon, raid built Pokémon or Pokémon with a special attachment(like your in-game team from each game)
Then again, I suppose with Home allowing backwards compatibility to older generations I can always just fill up my boxes in Sword/Shield with as much of the Living Dex as they can hold to free up space for use while playing Scarlet/Violet.
"most of them having 4 forms each"? Apart first four generations the gender differences were basically abandoned. From fourth gen onward there're like 1 or 2 pokemon with gender differences per generation

As hard as this challenge is, I'm not even kidding when I say buying all the equipment for this is undoubtedly the biggest hurdle (for me). At this point in my life I do not have excess money to buy multiple DS with now unavailable games and apps, several games that are now overpriced and basically the same but you need every version in each generation to complete each region, a GameCube with all the link cables and multiple games. Some pokemon come in gift form in Wii games as well, a console I have never cared to own. Unless you already have all or the majority of this stuff, it'd probably be best just to use a few of the more affordable games to do pretty much the same thing. As for Pokemon missing from the switch collection of games, there are really only a few remaining. You can probably use 2 or 3 DS games total to make those up and still walk away with 1010 individual critters. Just my take/warning for people who might feel like they have to go broke for a challenge you might get bored half way through with
Right now, I'm going for a living form dex. Once I finish, I'm going for a shiny living form dex. This would be something I'd love to do, but I dont have the finances, lol. Can't afford all the consoles, missed out on virtual console, and dont have 500+ dollars to through around.
shiny dex is very attainable with rng manipulation.

Regarding Spinda... Does anyone know if there's a bug or something with Pokémon home bc since a while all my spinda in Home (~30) look identical, from different gens, games, consoles and I know the looked different....

This is similar to how I am approaching my living dexes, but I want to create a living dex in every generation/game, and catch every Pokémon in that generation that is catchable Ilin it. For example, rather than catching 3 Caterpie and evolving them each to get metapod and Butterfree, I want to catch a metapod and a Butterfree if possible. It makes me catch more Pokémon, cuts down on the annoying late game experience of "alright, time to battle all the late game Pokémon until I evolve everything." And I find it just overall more engaging and enjoyable. Less grindy feeling and more exciting when I find a rare spawn evolved form.
I also created a spreadsheet that tracks every change a Pokémon has had throughout it's existence, and I'm trying to catch every iteration of that Pokémon, for instance, of a stat total was changed to make a Pokémon more competitive, that's a new "form." Gen 1 to Gen 2 added genders, now I need 1 copy of each in Gen 1 AND 2 copies of each in Gen 2. Gen 4 introduced actual gender sprite differences, new version to catch. Gen 6 has fairy, new iteration. All of that stuff. It has been exhausting especially since I am doing it alone and I have a real job, but it's a labor of love and keeps Pokémon fun and interesting for me after having played every game.
I would add catching one of every alpha pokemon and one of every gigantimax pokemon to the different forms as well

Would homebrewing pokemon bank and transporter, or an equivalent like PkHex or PkSM count for this challenge or is it only official downloads?
Sure I think odds are good you’ll do it by the time you are dead but with newer games making shinies easier to obtain, you can make really good steady progress. I also think that the retro challenge isn’t super necessary given you need to do those games for the main challenge anyway. Though if you want an excuse to play them again it’s decent.
2:23 I’m not sure if Toby and the people he’s working with would agree with this method of obtaining pokemon Bank/Transfer but for those with a new 3ds model can homebrew their console and download .cia files of both pokemon bank and pokemon transfer completely free now that they do not have paywalls in the wake of the eshop closing. I personally own pokemon bank and transfer on my personal 3ds and have for a while, but i have another 3ds that i tested this out on after homebrewing it and it works completely fine, since, as I mentioned, there is no paywall restricting you from using pokemon bank or even pokemon transfer. So, if installing these games through homebrew post-eshop-closing is an acceptable method to play these games and be able to bring a lot of the pokemon required from this challenge into pokemon home, then it wouldnt be necessary to buy a 3ds with pokemon bank installed just for this challenge.

I have added to this challenge an ability dex, an alpha dex and an underleveled dex.
I've never had much interest in the master dex challenge as I'd rather do my living dex in whatever is the most accessible way unless it's a particularly special Pokemon to me that I'd like to get from a specific game (not to mention the 3DS that I have Pokemon bank on is literally falling apart with the top half barely holding on at this point, so I don't like to use it more than I have to, and can't really afford to fix or replace it at the moment) but I have spent roughly the past 8 years working on a shiny living dex, and I'm so close to being done with only 7 shinies to go! (Arceus, Watchog, Ducklett, Golett, Froakie, Golisopod, and Runerigus.) :)
And when I'm done with the main shiny living dex, I plan to work on alternate forms (I already have some done, such as various gender differences, Deerling/Sawsbuck seasonal forms, 3 segment Dudunsparce, etc...) and I'm planning to start a new project where I catch a shiny Rayquaza (my favourite Pokemon) in every type of ball that I can, which for now means finding and catching 23 more shiny Rayquazas for a total of 25 when including the 2 I already have which are in a Pokeball and a Beastball respectively. :) That should give me a fun little challenge to work on so I can still shiny hunt something after I finish collecting every possible shiny! xD
If I ever do this, I'm gonna do everything pre-Galar on emulators so I can use the original games

It's a challenge I was trying to complete because my first shiny in the hoen remakes was a ralts that killed itself.... smh....
