i drive the 2023 M3 manual i do have to agree, one of my main complaints is how rather soft the clutch and stick feels. yes, for daily driving it is nice, but when im on the track it doesn't feel as snappy as id like for it to be. my previous car was the type r so i was very accustomed to a more aggressive clutch and manual feel. i expected the M3 to have a similar feel but i was rather disappointed. i did a slide at one point when driving on the track and when downshifting to second gear to gain speed again it locked out on me for a sec, unsure if it was my error but it did catch me off guard. the new screen is beautiful but has its major share of issues. when driven on the track, it tends to cut in and out of apple carplay to then just not work at all when reaching higher speeds. and on casual driving it the heads up display will work for the most part but there are times i would have to turn off the car and turn it back on to get it to work properly. its my first and only bmw i've driven and owned so i cant compare how it is to previous models, but overall i am happy and in love with the car, it did amazing on the track and was at the end of the day i was very satisfied with how the car drove, it's definitely a heavier car which took some getting used to after coming from a type r but it is still an amazing car at the end of the day.

@@germanengineering204 I love the RS3 and it’s 5 cylinder is one of my favorite engines. I feel like the back seat is too small to really consider it usable and if you’ve ever driven one it’s more video game speed (point and shoot). It lacks the feel that the old M2 and Blackwing have.
I feel like there's no difference now between the M2/M3/M4 now. They all are using the same engine, and you could likely tune the engine to be at the same as the M3 and M4, so what differentiates the M2 from the M3 and M4? The M4 is going for a lot more than the M2, is that price difference worth it?
I agree. There needs to be a big difference between the line up. It’s not worth buying a m4 if u could just tune a m2 and it’ll be the same. Still better than a 2L 4cyl tho 😂
He literally should’ve been in 2nd gear at that speed, I don’t know why he is driving improperly. Nobody actually drives/races like that so it was an irrelevant data point.
@@jacobsechler1515 nobody races like that (I'd hope) but plenty people will drive in 4th at that speed of course, then traffic speeds up and they may think it'll accelerate a bit. And it really, really didn't.
I drove the previous-gen M240i with a sunroof, and as someone who hasn't historically cared for sunroofs, that was the first car where I actually really liked it, because it made a fishbowly cabin that much more fishbowly. The car just let in so much light, and I could see everywhere. It was a weird thing to takeaway, but I really liked it. I get that it takes away from performance and whatnot, but.... as a fun daily, I'd spec it.
I have a previous gen M240i, (in blue of course) with sunroof, and I like it. If you don't want extra light, you can just close the shade, so it's the best of both worlds really. It's not a lightweight track car, so you really wouldn't notice the extra few pounds, and there's more than enough power to handle that anyway. Summer night driving with the sunroof fully open is also very nice.
I’ve been watching these guys for years, and I live in the same area where they film most of their Canadian content. Seeing them grow and expand to America has been oddly bittersweet for me. On the one hand, it was really cool to have local people like them making such amazing content right here in the GTA, so I’m a little sad to see them spend so much time in America. On the other hand, they’re in America because of their deserved success and because it allows them to create even more incredible content for us, I can’t complain! They’re the Top Gear of the modern day imo, and embody all that I love about car culture today. They seem like really great guys and I wish I had the opportunity to meet them back when I was working at a local dealership that would loan them cars. I was working when they did the meet and greet back in the summer :(
Its just tough to film car content in the winter lol. Only so many trucks and SUVs you can do, most of these cars have tires that will try to kill you when its below freezing
I felt the same way when Doug moved away from the 215. It was cool recognizing all the places and dealerships and stuff. But content is content, and it's no question I'd rather the content be good.

Like Thomas, I own an OG M2. I LOVE it. If I can't find a 997.2 / 991.1 in the spec & price I like, I will keep it forever. The reason I love it though is because it's rowdy. More specifically, you MUST tame it. To drive it well, you have to control it. As you get better with that control, it becomes a dance, where you're playing with the car and it's playing right back. I'm in the hunt for my perfect forever ICE car. The one I will keep forever. The only car I've found that has been more playful to drive are the afore mentioned Porsches. Kind of glad to hear this one doesn't hit that high bar, because I have less than 2 years left on my payments!
@@BrianJohnson-kh7mg Like to hear that! Just need to find a good example in the specs I want. I'll keep trying, but I'm happy to keep the M2 forever, if the right one never comes along. It's such a fun car...and nearly paid off!
Also an OG owner. I absolutely love the low end torque of the N55. I understand that they want to simulate NA torque curve with the S55 and now S58 but for daily driving I take the N55.
The M2 will feel quicker than those particular Porsches in everyday “midrange” driving. The Porsches are naturally aspirated. But either would be a great forever car.
@@stevemiller1626 Agreed! Way I figure it, we're heading toward electric, or at least hybrid. So I want my fun ICE car to be antithetical to those cars. No ICE will beat electric, so I'll get speed out of the electric future. I WON'T get NA sound, light weight, agility, connected feel, etc. So I want my ICE car to exemplify those traits. The Porsche will be slower than the M2 (at least feeling), but it'll better hit those non-electric traits. Test drove a 991.1 and loved it! The rear engine really gives it a playfulness, like the M2. Just need to find one!
Almost had to go with a zf8 since the 6mt was so damn hard to find. Was fortunate to drive both and lock in three pedals. zf8 is a nice auto and if I had most any other BMW that didn't offer manual I'm sure I'd be thrilled with it.
Glad you mention rear seat room, especially compared to the F22/F87. One of the huge benefits of the last 2-series coupe being on a 1-series platform is the rear seats really are fine for anyone shorter than 5'10". People like to bitch about coupes having no rear seat room, but that bubbly roofline (reminiscent of the E30) on the F22 wasn't there for nothing. I haven't done the 60lb.-saving rear seat delete on my M240i because I really do have people in the back often enough to justify keeping them. Making the G22/G87 rear seats smaller, just because it has an exclusive variant of CLAR not shared by a 4-door, was a bit shortsighted. If you're going to make the rear seats useless, why not remove them entirely for a parcel shelf?
i've had 2 m2's, m235i, and now an x3m. i can say the s58 has a HUGE set of turbos and while it gives huge tuning overhead, it makes the power peaky. in one way, that's good because it'll feel a bit more NA in the way the power builds, but the punchy mid rpm wall of torque is something i miss. the b58 doesn't have that problem. (i also had a 340i) that said, even on the n55 has the torque flattening out in the factory tune. tune the n55 and it feels like the torque doubles lol. the s58 gains a little torque with tuning and it helps (but gains a ton on the top)
I'm not sure whether I'd call this peaky powerband a 'problem', if anything it feels like they deliberately designed the engine this way. This M2 produces 550Nm starting with 2650RPM, whereas a B58 with an intake, exhaust and tune will make comparable power numbers with torque close to 600Nm - a torque figure which starts way lower down at around 1600RPM by the way. I think BMW designed the S58 this way on purpose, so it feels more old school rev-happy. I'm nothing more than a couch mechanic though, so maybe my math is completely ignorant.
Except tuning your BMW now makes the Bavarians mad. The new B58 ECU's from the Supra have to be sent to Finland to be cloned which costs a tremendous amount of money just to be able to get on the dyno.
@@xIcarus227 - I agree. The 4th gear pull reminded me of my E60 M5 instead of my current M235i. The M5 had to be worked hard and that’s what you want an M car to be.
I like the peaky power band now, so long as they've improved the traction control. it's always been the worst of the German cars and in a turbo car it's so bad. cuts throttle, dumps boost, you bog, after a second or two of no throttle, it returns, but now you're building boost again, and it just murders performance in a straight line. I hear the newest m cars all have a much improved system, so let's hope that's truly the case. I'll miss the punchy torque, but these would probably wake up with a tune in the mid range torque department, though probably not a good idea for the 3 pedal cars lol

Great review as always. I’m feeling disappointed that it didn’t really live up to the hype. And hearing that the ZF is more lively (and sounds like more fun overall) than the 6MT is a dagger to the heart 😢
I have been watching other reviews from other car journalists: - they’re raving about how good the car is, Guess everyone has their opinion Buh I love th car.. it might not be a good looking as the predecessor buh it’s still a great car
Its okay, most manuals these days aren’t all that. Save for a few cars like the CTR, Porsche’s, Camaro’s, and a few others. Most Mustangs come with the crappy MT-82, the GTI and Golf R come with a mid 6MT, Elantra/Veloster N come with an okay 6MT, and most other manufacturers don’t care as much as we would like them too. That being said, you can make the transmissions better. That is, if you’re okay with modifying them. I wouldn’t be worried about the manual in the M2. Some bolt ons and a tune as well as a few mods to the transmission and it will be in another league altogether.
what hype? The new 2 series has had so much hate from day one, and it seems more and more deservingly so. I have a very basic "M" 4 banger from the old series. I love everything about it, beyond of course, I'd like another 30 or so HP. When the new 3 series came out I was given one as my rental from BMW when I got my car serviced. I couldn't believe that thing was a BMW. Heavy, non responsive, it was a turd. The new 2 series is just that. Now sure, you can add more power...but if the doors are too heavy, the sound is too dead, and the ride too soft...what's the point?
Being old enough to remember the "Bangle" BMWs (even though Mr. Bangle already did the ones before and they looked great) this seems like an hommage to "looks bad, but look how brave we are by sticking to it!" from back then. (not just the M2, the 3 and 4 series and all the beaver teeth current BMWs. The 2 series at least isn't that much of an offender in the grill departement, but anything below around the car looks tasteless.) How beautifull the old one looks now! Also the inside picture you showed of the old one looks way more elegant and classy than the rectangle display that needs the mid mounted supportbracket we can see several times in the video. I don't get why manufacturers place free standing displays for the important functions wihtout any kind of sunglare protection hood. It just looks bad to me. And like a bad idea with sun comming form the side too.
The most honest review you will find on the new M2 which is why I love Throttle House. What a shame BMW now make two M4s and no offer a M2. Not surprisingly BMW managed to make this look so fugly. Very sad to hear they dialed out the fun too. The last great driving BMW is no more. Officially not interested in any new BMWs.
Matt on carwow for example also said that it is a little bit less fun to drive than the old M2 but that also means that it’s better as a daily driver than the old one. Everything has pros and cons. But in this review they only talked about the cons. Which is disappointing really.
I really appreciate Thomas being less dramatic and more.....real-world...in this video. He sometimes is very dramatic in both the way he describes something as well as his over-the-top laughter at James' jokes. He was much more "normal" in this one and it was appreciated.
LOL!! Excellent review, very objective and I'm SOOO Happy you call things as they are. I hate reviewers who are positive about everything, gloss over any negatives, just to kiss up to some suits who probably bought them a steak dinner the night before. Stay objective boys.... would love a follow-up Emira video! Despite the price hike, I still think it's a great value. It's still cheaper than Evora was and quite a big step forward from that.
Come on mate, they are knocking the car for being more stable. That's just ridiculous. Put styling aside, this is quicker in a straight line and around a track.
@@mattyoz0 no, they knocked the car for being less fun. They commended it for being more stable in corners and for getting rid of the axle trample when the wheels are spinning. M cars were always meant to represent first and foremost, and they're losing their edge in that regard. To be fair all of its competitors are doing the same.
@@xIcarus227 Well you can't have both. I guess track times were more important than going sideways for a video. But i will say, the auto look more lively.
@@mattyoz0 I think you're right, it would be harder to get consistent laptimes in a playful car for sure. And yeah the auto definitely looks more lively, it definitely seems to be better matched to the peaky power band of the engine. Makes sense too, similar reason to why the Mustang GT is disproportionately faster with the 10-speed auto compared to the manual, the gears are super close.
I am actually pro sunroof for the M2, because the two series 1st generation and convertable I didn’t particularly like, and I love convertibles. The next best thing is to have a car with a sunroof because I am that person that has the sunroof open almost all of the time. I also love that it lets in more natural light in the cabin.
I was trying to understand why this was a gripe, as a Japanese car driver it just didn’t make sense. I think I get it now, planning for the eventual shortcomings of a European car’s lack of reliability and longevity… makes sense now.
As much as I still prefer an F87, the G87 is not that bad looking especially compared to the G80/G82. I had the previous gen 2er and I do agree with the crooked seats though. My right knee would be on a slight bend even in full throttle while my left knee is fully stretched straight on the dead pedal.
Was driving with my mom today (who knows nothing about cars) and the first thing she said when she saw one was “wow that is one hideous bmw”. Love you mom ❤️
The shifts were exactly how I have described them and people said I was crazy about a manual not feeling as engaging! It just didn't have that mechanical feel you want with a manual.
99% of the manuals are sh*t tbh. I have driven like 200-300 different cars from beetle to corvette and transportter to citroen cv and I have to say gearbox in most cars is just bad. There are only a handful of cars that actually have amazing feeling manual.
Always fun to watch you guys review a car! While I can get behind the new style interiors of BMW, the outside of this car is a huge turn off for me. Here in the Netherlands (due to purchase tax based on CO2) this starts at ~115,000 euro...ouch. That makes it more expensive than the 240i (at ~76,000 euro), 340i (at ~89,000 euro) and 540i (at 82,000 euro). I like a small coupe but I wouldn't ever consider it in the context of Dutch pricing. I can't imagine it's ~39,000 euro better than a 240i or any of the other cars with the B58 engine.
I feel like they purposely made it underperform so the m3 and m4 don’t look like a bad financial decision. But I do feel like when the competition version and possibly after that a cs version. Then we will be getting the full fat m modifications in a small package we all want.
Before I saw this post, I just dream shopped a 2-series on the BMW website with a responsible fat wallet, and when I saw the 0-60 difference between the M240 and M2 was only .02 seconds, I was like, nah, the M240 is all that's needed. Also, that front grille treatment on the M2 reminds me an early-2000s Pontiac G6.

i drive the 2023 M3 manual i do have to agree, one of my main complaints is how rather soft the clutch and stick feels. yes, for daily driving it is nice, but when im on the track it doesn't feel as snappy as id like for it to be. my previous car was the type r so i was very accustomed to a more aggressive clutch and manual feel. i expected the M3 to have a similar feel but i was rather disappointed. i did a slide at one point when driving on the track and when downshifting to second gear to gain speed again it locked out on me for a sec, unsure if it was my error but it did catch me off guard. the new screen is beautiful but has its major share of issues. when driven on the track, it tends to cut in and out of apple carplay to then just not work at all when reaching higher speeds. and on casual driving it the heads up display will work for the most part but there are times i would have to turn off the car and turn it back on to get it to work properly. its my first and only bmw i've driven and owned so i cant compare how it is to previous models, but overall i am happy and in love with the car, it did amazing on the track and was at the end of the day i was very satisfied with how the car drove, it's definitely a heavier car which took some getting used to after coming from a type r but it is still an amazing car at the end of the day.
A Jackson Pollock painting went to town on itself… absolutely cracked me up 😂😂. The whole bleeping bit was masterful. Sticking it to the Germans. Well done and an keep up the great reviews. 14:01
I think the ct4 Blackwing is now the car to get at this price range if you need back seats
100%, such a shame bmw did this
the new M2 weighs about as much as the CT4 Blackwing somehow...might as well get 4 doors
RS3 is a better all arounder, and way faster in a dig race!
yup.
And all of them almost weigh the same 😅
Xdrive is the only true difference. Engine, platform, weight, trans, etc are all similar
they should've at least tried to make the M2 lightweight to differentiate it, but now it weighs as much as an R35 GTR

I drive the same gen m240 and 100% agree. I get upset if somebody even closes the shade
I drive this gen 230 w/ the sunroof. I keep the shade closed 95% of the time. I'm gonna try opening it up and see what the fuss is about. thanks
BMW sunroofs are actually really nice. They work, don’t leak, and most importantly, are placed in the right position to make it really nice to have.
Can someone explain what the drawback of a sunroof is? Other than potentially leaking water driving with natural light coming in is so nice.
I really hate that digital cluster.. I miss analog gauges :^( Great video!
Same! It's horrid
Agreed. What an eyesore. Awful
It’s such a lazy design too. It just one big ass screen all the way across the dash. Honestly that turns me off more than the exterior looks.

I just moved from an og M2 to a 997.2, best decision! M2 is great but I don't miss it at all.

That was PROFESSIONAL !!!!!
Another great video. You guys nailed it about styling, too... Hilariously nailed it.
The front end looks like a Lego car. The rear looks has a Pokémon face.

I love the part when Thomas thrashing on the styling looks 😂
i've had 2 m2's, m235i, and now an x3m. i can say the s58 has a HUGE set of turbos and while it gives huge tuning overhead, it makes the power peaky. in one way, that's good because it'll feel a bit more NA in the way the power builds, but the punchy mid rpm wall of torque is something i miss. the b58 doesn't have that problem.
Insanely good review. I like the way the M2 looks but can’t accept a screen for a dash in a sporty car - doesn’t look sporty one bit

Never fails these guys always has me cracking up! The editing and video is always top notch!
