    To me it goes back to one thing: atmosphere. Majora's Mask *feels* magical, creepy, eerie, enchanted, different, all that at the same time. It gives me the vibes that folk tales, myths and legends have. It doesn't feel like just another "fantasy world" with its lore and intricalities; rather it feels like a myth, a piece of folklore. Termina is already weird from the start - you just somehow get there in a rather unexplained way, and it's this "mirrored" world that is just so strange; weird things are happening to everyone, and there is this animism in which everything kinda feels alive in a way (the moon; the masks; etc). And the main antagonist just feels mischievous, like a kind of trickster spirit, but also super ominous, instead of a machiavellian conqueror (like Ganondorf). At the same time, it's basically the end-times, and the world is about to be over in just 3 days.
    No other game seems to me to have replicated such a strange, eerie, fascinating atmosphere as Majora's Mask has. To me, it goes back to that. The world just feels special, like a myth.

    Great vid! Majora's Mask is one of the most oppressive games ever made and SERIOUSLY ground breaking, so it has my utmost respect for that. Oddly enough though, i feel like giving this game better graphics actually kinda does it a disservice. Part of the reason the original is so unsettling is how weird and uncanny everything looks

    • @MrHammers
      @MrHammers  3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I would love the N64 version on Switch with only the textures upscaled and put in widescreen format. Probably won't happen though. I guess they could give it the Mario 64 treatment (like how they ignored the DS version and went with the original).

    Picking my favorite is reallllly hard. Majora’s Mask is definitely a contender. Along with BotW, Skyward Sword, Link to the Past, and OoT. Majora’s Mask is amazing, I just wish it was a little bigger and smoother. And I’m not complaining about the size, but just that I love it so much that I want more. I want another game in Termina. Also the repeating time gimmick has been done a lot in movies and tv shows, but not very often in games. I really like that about this game

    • @MrHammers

Fix the dungeon order in Ocarina, take that best additions from 3D MM and revive the old unique elements that got cut, make the games darker then the 3DS ones, reverse the censored blood and dirt, and voice acting for all the characters (except Link of course). I think it would have to be on the next console but having beautiful definitive versions of both games would be a dream come true.

    A hero isn’t just defined by the princess he saves, but everyone he saves. He stays in termina to save it from ruin; cares about each person. That’s definitely a heroic story to me 💜 This being the follow up to ocarina just makes these two games my favorite in the Zelda series. What else is there for Link to do but carry on, and do what is right along the way. This game has such little moments that show Link kinda does more than just fight enemies with a sword. The fact that all these stories are so personal and Link goes out of his way to deliver things with meaning to so many people(even if he may be getting something in return) is a beautiful thing to me.

    The worst/best thing about playing this as a kid was knowing that everything I did reset after helping these people and going back to day 1 until I beat the game. But even beating the game, knowing that major points in each character’s stories have already passed and can’t be redone once the game is beaten now is very profound

    The Nintendo 64 just had some great games on it. The late 1990s and early 2000s was just a great time to be alive. I love Majora's Mask too. It's my second favorite game in the series behind Twilight Princess. That game has the same dark feeling that MM has and it has a lot more dungeons. Honestly I felt that have 4 dungeons held MM back so much.

    Brilliant video! Majora’s mask became my favourite Zelda game from the moment I stepped into clock town and became one of my favourite works or art when I finished. It’s atmosphere is unparalleled, there are games with very immersive atmospheres like Botw, silent hill 2, Metroid, etc but none have managed to envoys so much at once. There’s always a sense of urgency in clock town, there’s a sense of sadness in great bay, a sense of acceptance in Romani ranch and more. This game can get dark but also be a game about love and hope which in a way, is very uplifting for me. Going around Termina and doing all the side quests, exploring the world he talking with the people just has this sense of poetry and beauty that it can’t be described by words.
    It’s also one of the most fun games I’ve ever played, like the time management, standout unique dungeons and everything having a schedule made for a game that’s addicting where so much is players choice and you decide how you want to play the game. Everyone will have a different experience playing this game and take away different things from this game that no other Zelda game has come to do before it. It was my favourite Zelda game before this video but you just encapsulated my love more for it!

I played this game the day it came out (I was 11 years old) and it’s lasting impression me and how I look at video games is still a bench mark. Everyone thought I was crazy on not liking BOTW. But you summarize that perfectly on how I felt. I lost interest about half way through when everything started to feel copy and paste and nothing felt like I was making a difference like I did in Major’s Mask. You killed this!

    Majora's Mask and A Link to the Past are always neck in neck whenever I talk about my favorite Zelda game. So much so, that i tend to treat the 3D and 2D Zeldas as separate entities sometimes in order to say both are my favorite haha. I adore both of them to death, so its really hard to choose (I also just got done replaying Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask one right after the other for the first time in years so i dont think my judgement would be fair right now haha).

    Always something new to learn in old games. If new discoveries are being made in games that are 20+ years old I can’t help but think what’s tucked away in a game as huge as Breath of the Wild waiting to be found.

    Brilliant video mate! I feel like although Majora's Mask is often touted by many as their favorites, their aren't enough big deep dives on TH-cam about the game. You know me, I am nuts for Zelda, and I got to say that Majora's Mask is up there in my top 3. I love how it spins off of Ocarina of Time, which is especially effective if you play them back to back. The mask collection is so intriguing and rewarding, and even the masks that have a one time use are still fun to collect, and nothing feels like a filler quest. In fact, nothing in the game feels like filler. It's small and compact world and story makes every item, quest, character, dungeon etc. have purpose. It is the first and one of the only games I have ever 100% because it is engaging in its collective incentives.
    Do gotta hard disagree on Ganon and Zant having no motive/purpose. Wind Waker's Ganon gives a beautiful monologue on the mistreatment of his people by the Hylians and why he seeks his revenge. And Zant is a play on the big bad villain trope, presenting himself as this unstoppable force and then cracking into this crazy lunatic, subverting the player's expectations.
    But anyways, brilliant video! You're a legend and a half mate.

    • @MrHammers
      @MrHammers  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks dude! I completely agree, Majora's mask is just as big as it needs to be. All content and no filler. It's such a perfect package entirely.
      My regret over this script is not playing through the other Zelda titles or atleast diving into a Retrospective on them to refresh my memory. I was just mainly going over my Ganon experiences from memory and Zant was just a little too over my head maybe, I found his whole encounter to be a bit shallow, but again, going off memory from years back. When I played Twilight Princess I could care less about deeper meaning of video games :/. I wish I had the time to get fresh eyes on it all though. I do respect your opinion of course, your Zelda knowledge far surpasses mine. I barely consider myself a Zelda fan lol. Majora's mask was just an incredibly influential game to me so it stands out so much.
      Thanks for the love my dude, much appreciated!

    Love the video. My personal favorite LOZ is A Link to the Past. I think that particular title fully captures the essence of what LOZ started out as and evolved to in the 2d top down titles. It holds a magic that not very many games have. I think the music is perfect to set the tone of the game, the secrets and challenging puzzles added depth and replayability to the game (before the internet) and it was where a lot of staples in the LOZ universe were introduced. Light and dark world, weapons ect. Comparing these aspects to Majora's Mask it seems like Majora's Mask in my opinion is almost like a side games just to bridge the gap between OOT and a game more in line with the LOZ theme. I'm not Saying Majora's mask is bad by any means, it is an excellent game. It's play style and themes are just not what made me fall in love with the LOZ franchise. My biggest gripe I have against Majora's mask was the time limit. That to me was just so foreign to be in a LOZ game but I understand why it was there and it is a major part of what makes Majora's mask special. Again, awesome video.

Check it out if you never have. It's not a dark game, no, but lighter themed; but (without giving away spoilers) Link is faced with quite the philosophical dilemma in the latter half.

Though we eventually bought dk 64 we bought mm first so didnt have an expansion pack. Then went back the next day. Then when I could play it I was so shocked by link turning into a shrub. And with the time thing I was angry and confused on how fast I must have to beat the game. I actually no longer think the start is that hard. But compared to beginning of every other Zelda game it does just throw you straight in. But now its by far my favorite.

    Yeah, I love Majoras Mask. Can't argue with the video.
    To me, I love most of all the NPCs. Some puzzles, boss fights, explorations and (good god) the music are great, but don't come close. In Majora's I really want to help people, get to know them, discover who they are behind the mask if they find me trustworthy. Its awesome to see how they change and react each day, and how they deal with the end of the world (like the film Melancholia).
    They feel so vulnerable, but so lively and dynamic. And you feel just the same as they do, and just by having the opportunity and power to help, you already feel like you should. Not because someone told you.
    I don't remember feeling that much hero-like in Ocarina (maybe with the Gorons) or BotW (besides the water realm), while every part of Majoras made want to understand, to wonder/wander and to help as I can. The game rewards all these things, there is no stone put out of place, no character without purpose. It's just some superb game design and writing made with the greatest of care.

    I can't remember if either the first Plants vs Zombies game or Majora's Mask was the first game I ever played. Either way, Majora's Mask was one of my first experiences with video games and I loved it even when I was a child. I didn't understand the message or tone of the game, but I was always so into it. I remember being obsessed with Deku Scrubs and still think it's hilarious that the Deku Princess was my first childhood crush (we've all had those crushes on fictional characters when we were little). Sure, the beginning was frustrating, but once I understood it, I felt a connection with the game that I don't think can be recreated by any other game. Majora's Mask isn't just a game, it's a whole experience.

    This was such a hard Zelda to have be your first Zelda experience. I remember being 9 years old and having absolutely zero clue as to what was happening for like the first 10 hours I played it. It was the only game I had on the N64 so I just continued to try and figure it out in an endless loop of dying and being scared.
    In retrospect I wouldn’t have it any other way. I keep playing Zelda after Zelda title hoping to recapture the experience but this shit was like lightning in a bottle.

    I was never creeped out, it was unsettling in a depressing way. I was very sad throughout the game. The lost son, the lost father, the lost husband, the lost sibling. I felt lost in a place I couldn’t leave. I wasn’t free like in ocarina. The most horrible thing that happened was when the little girl was abducted by aliens… I was 9 I tried so hard yet I failed. That scarred me, I became obsessed with never failing in video games. I tried everything until I saved her after attempting another replay. But I also realized sometimes it was the story development. It’s the reason I began to play games on Hard, this game made me righteous. This game created the “I need to get stronger sooner than normal, because if I don’t, I can loose those I love. I have to be stronger” so I challenged myself so much in video games and work and school, because I knew if I can bust my back in all those superficial aspects of life I could protect my loved ones. But even then destiny is out of my control, but for that reason, I must be stronger, vigilant, and ready for despair.
    I know I wrote a lot… but it also made me realize how the purest of people can become lost in power and anger, you must be strong enough to bring them back. This story changed my life at such a young age.

    I personally prefer A Link to the Past and A Link Between Worlds, but Majora's Mask is in my top 3 and is my favorite of the 3D Zelda titles for sure. Great video, I always enjoy a good breakdown as to why this game is so great. Personally though, I prefer ALTTP and ALBW because I generally enjoy 2D Zelda titles more for their gameplay compared to the 3D ones, the puzzles tend to be more interesting, creative and require more thought, while the 3D ones feel more basic by comparison. That said, that's partly why I enjoy Majora's Mask so much, its not as hand holdy or basic compared to other 3D Zelda titles as it expects you to be a competent Zelda player, given that it's a direct sequel to Ocarina of Time.

    • @FuzedBox
      @FuzedBox 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's super tough for me... I'd have to stick two at a time on a list.
      1. Majora's Mask and Wind Waker. Interesting because it took me a while to get into MM and I truly wanted a reason to hate WW when it came out, but couldn't. Both titles aged like a fine wine.
      2. Ocarina of Time and Link's Awakening. Both were the first Zelda titles I owned (borrowed the OG and LttP from friends a time or two before buying later on). Played the original LA on the original Gameboy, re-bought the DX and fell in absolute love with OoT. Both had a lasting impression.
      3. Link to the Past and A Link Between Worlds. Loved LttP, fanastic game with a lot of charm, content, and memories. Less can be said about the latter title, except that it feels like "part 2" and I really liked it.
      4. Twilight Princess and the OG Legend of Zelda. Loved the original game as a kid, but it had its flaws and still does.. In the good old days I printed the map onto 12 sheets of paper and taped them together. Even now with cell phones, it's still a pain. That said, it's iconic and still worth replaying every now and then. Twilight Princess I wanted to like after watching the trailers, but didn't like it on launch. Revisited a few years later and loved it. It's a _very_ solid Zelda title and ticks all the boxes into what makes one of them great, but it also sticks a little tightly to that formula and has less of an identity. Twilight Princess was also the title to bear the distinction of having the original sins of overly-long intros and hand holding mechanics that have plagued the franchise ever since. Despite the flaws of these two titles, they both had moments that were amazing and memorable.
      5. The three Capcom games: Oracle of Ages/Seasons, and Minish Cap. They're fun, improved on Link's Awakening in many aspects, but were a bit all over the place in terms of dungeon/overworld design; amazing at their best, and pretty crap at their worst. Really good games, but didn't have quite the same impact as those on #4.
      Somewhere at the extreme end of my list would be Breath of the Wild. Bought it on the Wii U and put it down after about ten hours. Recently bought it again on the Switch and finally realized I just can't fucking stand it. It's utterly boring, has zero character, has an attrocious item system with no sense of reward, a vague and cryptic crafting system, and dungeons that all look exactly the same. It's just awful in every regard. Why people like it is a complete mystery to me, but I feel like this unpopular opinion will someday be venerated. Mark my words: It's soulless and won't age well. I've even played the three CD-i titles and as absolutely shitty as they are, they have that craptastic early-mid 90's charm written all over them. Yes, I like the Zelda CD-i games more than BotW.

    BotW is also my personal favourite, but I can easily see why someone might like MM the best. It's just so dark and unique. Back when it came out, there was pretty much universal agreement that while it was good, OoT was clearly better (that game also moved a lot more copies). People like me who prefered MM over OoT were seen as a weird minority. I'm very happy that the game has gained so much recognition over the decades and this video really made me remember what I loved about the game so much. The beginning alone was so much more intense when you compare it to OoT's chilled-out Kokiri Forest tutorial.

    i always loved MM's underlying message of you can't always save everyone, yeah you can 100% a save file but a lot of the bad things that have already happened, people of value are already dead or dying everyone is accepting of the fact they're going to die or they're in complete denial of everything, yeah you can fix the big problem but a lot of the people? their lives? their psyches? long gone and never to be the same, if they were ever real at all if you believe in the DMT hallucination theory.
    speaking of psyches link himself is often seemingly in this internal struggle of what he's doing, he just does what his head has hard wired him to do after OOT, fight and survive and ensure the safety of those around him, i get he's meant to be silent for a self insert but his lack of emotion in scripted cutscenes and the fact that he barely moves during them? he's so agnostic and apathetic to everyone, he just watches cause i assume he doesn't know what to do, and call it leaving interpretation up to the player but his lack of general emotion, weather intended or not, toward scenarios he wasn't really familiar with always stuck out to me.
    he meets families who are broken tearing themselves apart, cursed folk who've become children, little kids who get abducted and seemingly brainwashed by ACTUAL aliens - what does a little boy from the forest know about this? now chuck the poor little slime into a combat scenario and he'll fight tooth and nail to retain the peace, but has link ever faced a normal Human social problem in his entire life? the only struggles he would've faced socially would've been from Saria and Mido (if they were any a all) from the Kokiri Forest with one being his best friend and the other just some bully - both of these would likely be one on one arguments or fights anyway, link never had a real family besides those guys and thus the problems of other families clearly confuse him, which funnily enough is another theme alongside death in Majora's mask there's a lot more of a prominent focus on personal problems, like the ranch, the tribes of gorons, the zora band, yeah you still go do dungeon's and stuff but the focus is usually on the people you're crawling through that dungeon for like the gerudo lair for the Zora eggs, humanising and giving motive to the people you're trying to protect gives a better sense of urgency then a giant moon ever could, and that's just another arrow in the quiver of why MM is the best Zelda game.
    twilight princess is #2 tho, for several reason but main one being that Midna is still the best companion Link has had, mainly because she was actually heavily involved in the plot and written into it wonderfully to boot, making me feel more emotion for her in a few hours then i ever have for Zelda in almost 20 years of playing these games and she wasn't just another sidepiece to add to the collection of basic companion's who's shtick wears thin after the 4th ''hey, listen!'' or dowsing tutorial
