    A few (mostly minor) notes and corrections:
    - Unfortunately the emulation has some graphical artifacts and that does come through at times in the video. I caught most of the ones that I CAN do something about but a few still got through. Sorry about that.
    - (Spoilers for Chapter VIII - Story - Endgame) I state that Skull kid goes into the stream to possess the moon. You can clearly see that it's after Majora's Mask detaches from Skull Kid to possess the moon though, it should be "Majora's Mask", not Skull Kid for that.
    - I probably mispronounced most things, unfortunately I wasn't able to find a guide for anything except Japanese names so many Zelda Universe-specific names are likely incorrectly pronounced. I would say sorry for this as well but there's not really much I could have done about it either I don't think. Also the voiceover is inconsistent due to me still finding which settings work well combined with the fact there were many recordings done of the commentary.
    - Yes, I know I messed up on a date. OoT released in 1998, not 1996. I screwed up on that in the script and I'm genuinely sorry; will make sure years don't get mixed up again.
    - The video might be made more boring by having a summary of the story in it. Sorry if that's the case, I just wanted to make this video more complete.

      @Fsaresh 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I liked the story summary, personally! Even after having played it many times, it's still nice seeing it put into a more linear fashion. Plus, it really does make it feel like a documentary. I was hoping there would be a little more content on the "decisions" you can make (e.g. stop Sakon and block the Kafei/Anju questline vs. let Sakon rob the old lady and get the blast mask)

    This game is one of the hardest to get into but when you finish it, it is the most rewarding.
    The victories are hard earned but have the most impact because you are never more invested in the welfare of NPCs than in this game.
    The Stone Tower Temple is a
    masterclass of dungeon design. It is IMO the greatest dungeon ever designed for a Zelda game.

    I like how the commercial for Majoras' Mask both feels completely unrelated to the game while also actually nailing the mood. The commercial is a bunch of people all over the world, fearing the apocalypse, occasionally looking up in dread while one kid is observed by the government playing MM trying to save the world. At the time I'm sure people watched this commercial like 'What the fuck is this even for?' but watching it now you can see how well it fits what the game is about. Not great marketing but brilliant packaging.

    Even though Ocarina of Time was a huge deal when it came out and still love it in its own way... Majora's Mask made such an impression on me and a lot of others about how damned dark, depressing, and hopeless the game felt, but you still compelled to press on... it felt more mature and different take on Zelda's traditional story arc of saving the Princess... we had to save a world that was doomed to die and even get to know the people who lived there and care for them... and empathize with the antagonist while still having to stop him

    What a nicely put together retrospective on one of the absolute best games of all time. I have so many crazy, weird, both nostalgic and not, feelings when I think back on this one. I remember playing in the Stone Temple (or the area before it?) when my Nana (RIP) came to pick me up for the weekend, during a storm. This game is so surreal, especially with all the darkness and such. Take me back. to the late 90s/early 2000s. :(

    I said it once I say it again. Like star wars the music is what complements the franchise like no other. Its mood changing rhythms in all the games captivate you to a point where you don't want to stop until you finish the game. Botw does it as well especially near the end in hyrule castle. They have concerts for christ sake. What other gaming franchise can say that? Exactly

  • @GameTimeNLL

    My favourite game of all time. And I highly doubt it will ever be replaced. It came at exactly the right time and right mood for me to be impacted by it greatly. There is yet to be a game that even comes close to the kind of atmosphere MM has. And about the lack of darker zeldas. There is one right around the corner and i cant wait. Twilight Princess was visually dark, but imo the content werent close to mature as ocarina of time and Majoras mask.

  • @sempercompellis

    Ocarina and BOTW are masterpieces for their respective ages-I understand how a younger person today, just picking up a controller and playing it; would have difficulty understanding how massive and spectacular Ocarina was; but it was every bit as impressive as BOTW is now. With that said, I have always liked Majora's more and gravitate to it when I decide to play early/retro 3D Zelda.

    The secret truth about majoras mask is that its all a dream. All of majoras mask happened while link was sealed in the sacred realm for 7 years during oot. Thats why majoras mask is a time loop and also why link stays a child in majoras mask, because link sees himself as a child and hasn't realized he's grown up. Thats why all the characters he sees in majoras mask are the same people he's already met in oot. Think of it like this, the sacred realm is putting link through a test while he waits, kinda like the genesis program in ark

    I really like the content of your video, but the format seems a little all over the place. the first 14 mins or so is frontloaded with a lot of redundant information, and you cover the period from pre-development, to post development,, then after that, you get back into the develoment of it. I think the first 14 or so mins needed to be either cut, or interwoven with their respective sections in the rest of the video. Do that, and trim out the redundancies in your script (saying the same points in multiple sections) and you will have a fantastic retrospective. you definitely have the skills.

    I'm probably in the minority when I say I'd rather prefer the 7 day cycle. With 3 days, it just feels too quick and you don't really get to bond with the other characters as much as you think. With 7 days, it would add more time to really develop the interactions with the other characters and it would be sad when the cycle finally ended.

    Twilight princess was the last Zelda game I played. I’m still waiting for a dark, realistic zelda release. That will truly be the day. Breath of the wild is too leftist and even still too cartoonish. I want something that is committed/loyal to what I grew up with. I hated windwaker

    My only complaint about your vid is that at 10:55 you say that the formula has the player stopping "Gannondorf" but its actually Gannon, Gannondorf is only in OOT

    • @VGDocs
      @VGDocs  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      He's called "ganondorf" in both WW and TP.
      Pretty sure he's just referred to as "ganon" when he's in his beast state (though may just be shorthand in some instances).

    This isn't true. MQ is not Ura zelda

    • @VGDocs
      @VGDocs  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Eiji Aonuma: "Ura Zelda was developed for the Nintendo 64 disc system that was released only in Japan, and since I turned down this project other staff members developed it. It was finally bundled in the GameCube version of Ocarina and released as The Master Quest.

      It certainly didn't start off as MQ but, according to Eiji Aonuma, it turned into it.

    • @ShiggyMomo
      @ShiggyMomo 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@VGDocs MQ was more of a way to shut the fans up and give them a small sliver of the many ideas that were going to be made for UZ. Not to mention it was a marketing strat. "Hey yall, buy Wind Waker and get the half-assed, 'uNrElEaSeD' Ura Zelda"
      If it was URA, we would've seen all the cut content like the Sky Temple, Light Temple, Unicorn Fountain, sword beam, even down to the NPCs themselves having daily schedules similar to MM, plus more.

    breath of the wild is pretty dark

    • @stanstanstan2597
      @stanstanstan2597 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      There are certainly dark undertones to it, but it’s not nearly on the level of Majora’s Mask. In Majora, the danger is much more immediate and the people of the land are actively reacting to it. Everyone around you is struggling with their inevitable deaths, and that of everything they know and love. Not only is everyone terrified of the approaching moon, but each of the peoples of Termina have their own troubles and sorrows. The Deku’s swamp has been poisoned, leaving them unable to access their temple or travel. Their Princess has been kidnapped, and the son of the Royal butler has been missing for a long time. The monkeys fear for their monkey brother who’s being wrongfully tortured by the Deku because they think he’s the one who took the Princess. The Gorons are freezing to death, and the Elder’s son is crying loudly for his missing father, the patriarch of the tribe-keeping the entire tribe awake for days. The Zora are unable to swim freely, as the sea has been cursed with fog and murk. Their band’s performance has been cancelled due to recent events and their lead singer’s loss of her voice-which in turn was caused by her eggs getting stolen by the Gerudo pirates. And I’ve only just barely scratched the surface. BOTW’s dark elements are undoubtably present, albeit in a much more limited capacity. Thousands died in the Calamity, and the effects of it are felt to some extent even in the present. Zelda’s been in the castle, tirelessly holding back Ganon for 100 years, and Link almost died. The Champs are dead, thousands of soldiers and innocents alike are dead, the King is dead, and Hyrule as a kingdom is reduced to nothing. But we only ever really see this and/or feel it in it’s full force in century-old memories, parts of the past. Most people in BOTW are just quirky jokesters, or at least indifferent/slightly rude normal people. Nobody is feeling the affects of the calamity on a personal level, people are just getting on with their lives normally. BOTW’s approach to story is still fine, it’s just a lot more subtle. To be clear, I’m not berating it or being edgy.

    No....they ruined the 3ds release in several ways. Both for Ocarina and Majora's Mask.....for example....who decided to make it look like the color was maxed out? It looked disgusting.....they were just pandering to kids these days who are too dumb and impatient to take the required time to figure things out. They need everything to be simple and immediate....it's pathetic.
