That’s a good attitude to have about that. If it helps there are breathing exercises called 4-7-8 that help us be a little more calm. You can look them up & find a them easily. Calm App also has them. There’s also book called The Confident Mind by Nate Zinsser that’s really helpful. Good luck to you, praying for you.
My motto in life is "If I can laugh at it, I can cope with it." Recognising the fundamental absurdity in so much of our lives has helped me through some immensely difficult events in my life, as well as through the annoyances and difficulties I encounter every day.
I relate to this so much. Sometimes I feel as though my teenage self understood this. He perfectly understood the balance between finding humor in things as well as when things are meant to be taken seriously. Then college hit, and I forgot that. When I entered college in 2015, humor seemed to become frowned upon and punished. Slowly I became nothing but serious and life became more dull than a rusty knife. My life has been that way ever sense, very dull and full of anxiety and depression. But in recent weeks, I have been slowly realizing that there's nothing I can do about the things that happen to me in life. Theres always going to be a roadblock or something to shake things up a bit. I can only control my actions and reactions. I am learning to react with more humor again, and it's still looked down upon by my serious bosses and associates, but who cares. I'm not going to let myself be miserable anymore. I have missed myself having a smile and a laugh regularly for a change.
Thank you for sharing this comment @isaacarthur9098 when I travel around speaking on this topic, I hear similar sentiments from people all over the world. You’re not alone in feeling this way and you have the power to lighten things up in your own life!! 💪😉
I absolutely love this speech! It is my impression that most of our upbringing has to do with getting kids to be more serious, so we then have serious adults. Kids are masters at finding funny moments everyday: they either do something funny, or they laugh and that also makes us, adults, laugh. When we slow down, we can observe the absurdity and the fun in life. There is no doubt in my mind that laughter is such a powerful remedy for life's ups and downs. Laughter is therapeutic and when we giggle with people around us, it helps us relax and feel more connected. This is also one of the reasons so many people like watching comedies. My main takeaway from this is that I am going to try to direct my own life in such a way that it becomes a comedy rather than a tragedy. Thank you so much for these great tips Paul!
@@paulosincup Paul, your speech was a highlight of my day! I so appreciate when people have and share a great sense of humor! Laughter is the best form of group therapy! 😊 Have a fantastic weekend! 🙏
This is the best talk I’ve watched in a while. I agree, we have to sometimes look for our inner child and find humor even as adults just like how we used to be when we were younger. It’s a way of living that I think is not always talked about. Thank you for this ted talk ❤
We all have experienced the affect of humour in our lives once but never recognised it's importance and even never knew it's good!! Thanks for this!!:)
It's fascinating how retraining our brain to perceive challenges with humor can transform our everyday stress into a source of strength and optimism. 🎭
Humor is extremely important in seeing us through the truly rough patches in life. You may find yourself in truly dire circumstances where the only thing you have is a sense of humor to lighten the situation and give you a beacon of hope through the situation. Humor can indeed increase resilience in bleak or trying circumstances. Humor is essential!
Excellent! Humor- and I am not talking slap your knee hee-haw - is a remarkable trait if you have it naturally or, like most of us, a benefit to learn! This should be taught to young people in school.
I absolutely agree with Paul’s theory. 20 years ago, I was super stressed at my freelance design job when everything that could go wrong went wrong. With the tight deadline of 3 pm that day, everyone working on the project stopped functioning like they normally would. For reasons I still don’t understand till today. I blurted out laughingly, “Don’t panic! It’s only a crisis”. All of a sudden, everyone just blasted out laughing and everyone just resumed normal. I think that comment somehow put the situation in perspective. No one dies as a result of the missed deadline. Miraculously, all worked out fine in the end and we made deadline.
I was in Walmart the other day and a cheerful fellow approached me saying "You look like you could use better internet service!" To which I smiled and said back "Oh, not me - I'm getting a divorce, won't even have a house soon" It made me feel good, and I'm sure it was something he was able to share and laugh about.
That's what exactly he was telling not to do, if you can't find humor in anything just watch comedy, if you don't find comedy interesting then just go out and talk to people face to face, if you can't even do that just find professional help
The problem is that I've never had much of a sense of humor as a kid either . Whatever semblance of a sense of humor I do have is dry , dead pan and easily missed by 99% of the population . . For example ,"Those might be useful exercises for taking myself less seriously and I'll add it to the bottom of my to do list." !
The bottom of the to do list 😂 I love it! That’s great humor. Just like exercising more often is good for you, but doesn’t mean your body will look exactly the same as someone else’s, exercising your humor muscle is good for you & your sense of humor will still be your own unique brand of funny. 💪 😉
What's wrong with the audience? Barely a chuckle at times... maybe the audio is off... This speaker is funny, albeit a little hyper (but appropriate for topic). 😊 Talk was a good reminder for me: lighten up. Good useful strategies.
lol. 😉 It was the last in a long evening of talks & the ones prior to mine were about some heavier topics. Took a few for the audience to warm up. I’m so glad you got something out of it 😎🙏
I got 12 notes with me, in the back of my cover of cell phone: 1. Be thankful. 2. Be optimistic. 3. Don’t worry or compare yourself with somebody else. 4. Be kind. 5. Work on social behavior. 6. Work on ways to tackle setbacks. 7. Learn to forgive. 8. When you enjoy Flow moments, encouraging them. 9. Be happy with the small moments, create your small events. 10. Go for your goals. 11. Live your belief or spirituality. 12. Take care your body- sleep enough and don’t use alcohol or drugs.
A hyper individualistic identity comes equipped with a huge ego, which makes you think you're the center of the universe and therefore never learn anything substantial outside of the bubble that the person created.
This being posted right while in having a mental breakdown about life and self esteem is just so perfect 😂😂
You’re already seeing the humor in it! Life is hard, but it’s also funny. Find the funny. It’s all material. You got this! 💪

Get professional treatment.
I feel like humor is the only way to affect things that are outside of your control. And that’s useful.
You said it! 💪
Humor cannot affect things outside our control, humor affects how we cope with and perceive things beyond our control.
I'm kinda surprised more people in the audience weren't chuckling at his jokes. They really needed to hear this. 🤭 Definitely an important point...
The irony!!
too many adults in the audience i guess
I’ve often been accused of too much humor, even by myself ! Now I know I’m not alone. Thank you Friend.

Poor Paul ... I felt so awkward because the audience were clearly never gonna get the point. Their sense of humour has clearly left the building 😅😂
Right!? I admire him for keeping his enthusiasm with this crowd. Montana State is not where you go study and have fun.
"Humor is life's sweetener" Brilliant and entertaining as always Paul. Bravo👋😊
That’s why that is important to do what makes you happy : laughing especially as long as it doesn’t harm someone !

Some of these phrases from him deserve an awkward laugh track like from a sitcom for real
A lot of them seem to add levity to a situation rather than crack you up .
