  • "After all, the only difference between drowning and diving is whether or not you come back up.” What is the difference between self-absorption and self awareness? Fin Sheridan is an experienced counselor and founder of EQ Leadership. In his talk, Fin goes into depth of the power of self awareness and the skill it takes to develop it. Fin presents the concept of being curious about ourselves but not caught up in self absorption.
Fin Sheridan is the CEO of EQ Leadership, a training and leadership development company that specializes in emotional intelligence. After a decade of leadership roles in the UK and the USA, he started EQL to help leaders and teams create cultures where people can flourish. He lives in Greenville with his wife Dani and his two constantly shedding dogs, Honey Bear and Teddy Bear. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I used to think I was self-aware but after learning some skills around self-awareness I realized how much more self-aware one can be and I realized that I am a bit more self-absorbed than self-aware sometimes, partially because I have some guilt around how people might perceive me if I truly shed my raw emotions out there and I take solace in the fact that people don't care. Self-aware is not a switch that you can just turn on once you realize it exists in your brain. It is a constant learning process.

It does for some. There are others who get stuck in the victim mentality and don’t reflect on what they can do to improve their lot. There’s also those who come out of their trauma with psychological illnesses which is even harder again.

So good. I've been questioning this narrative of focusing on being the main character of your life and it seems be having this pressure filled snowball affect on so many. Helpful to take the pressure off.

@@finsheridan8041I relate to this particular talk more than any other. I've caught myself in the past being too self-aware and reflecting too much, and it is certainly a weird feeling being aware of your self-awareness. I've learned that sometimes, ignorance is bliss. Not that your self-awareness ever goes away, but it's important for your general happiness to avoid reflecting too much. Thank you for this talk!

There's this book I read around the topic of self awareness. It changed my life, I can't seem to stop realizing the truth about self awareness ever since I read that book. It's called The Power of Now by Echkart Tolle. I recommend It to everyone, especially anyone going through depression and unhappiness.

      Great point, Jason.
I should’ve put a couple in - here’s some that spring to mind… community, trusted relationships, a faith or belief system, a sense of purpose and meaning beyond yourself, a good therapist, healthy practices for your mind/body/soul, etc.
All of these have helped “tether” me out of my own head and introspection at various times.
