Great talk, thank you. I'm chronologically 70, physically 60 most days, emotionally 26, and heartfelt 11.

I see so many synergies between this talk and Dr. Judy Ho’s work on self talk. Never knew that the way I talked to myself about aging could have such an effect!

Turning 40 in October. I’m so thankful I get to continue this journey. I feel 20 most days and people tell me I look much younger. Take care of yourself so you can continue to age and feel great about it!

Dr. Gendron raised my awareness of how pervasive and internalized ageism is, and how much those misconceptions harm us and those around us. I am so grateful for this talk, with its relatable examples, and will watch it again to help myself cultivate more accurate and whole ways of thinking about aging and resist ageism.

This is absolutely true. I’m in my late 50s and when I was growing up (when most of us form our expectations) we saw women of my now age sitting in a rocking chair knitting booties for their grandchildren. Instead I’m running ultra marathons and that’s just one way in which I’m different from the stereotype of an aging woman of yesteryear. Although rocking in a chair, knitting will make many women happy and that’s great, I hope others rethink their expectations and have a chance enjoy whatever serves them best at any stage in life.

This is an interesting talk! I am 76 yr but do not feel that. I find by hanging around with younger people & getting out every day has kept my mind & actions in h younger than my 76 yrs. Far
too many older people are old in their minds & actions!!! Get out, move, eat well, lots of deep sleep & learn anything no matter how small or large & talk with many people!🙂

I totally agree. I am 61 and just this weekend passed I went dancing and hung out with 28 year olds then later that evening I met and hung out with my neighbors in the birthday of 40. They all ask me the same thing. How is it that I look and seem so young in my attitude? I said the same thing it’s in the mind how you feel and what you do to keep yourself healthy and happy. I can’t find anyone my age to do things with because they all look old,act old and tired. This is coming from a person that had 2 simultaneous strokes and two major back surgeries. I refuse to accept old age as domes day. Just wish I still could find someone with my energy to do fun things with.

Was the whole talk not about: no matter how you feel now, you feel and are YOUR age?
Therefore, feeling younger is not "better" - it actually is without any meaning.
If you accept to feel just the way and age you are

Amazing! Love this reminder to live in our age and in our skin and embrace our journey! And recognize the way we feel about our age impacts how we treat others and the language we use in our heads and to others. Lets change the way we feel about growing older!!

Hi Tracey! Was so fun to meet you and to hear this talk from backstage ❤ And it’s even better on TH-cam! Aging is one of the only universal phenomenons of our human existence and yet so many of us struggle and fight with this inevitability. I really enjoyed your lighthearted approach to providing helpful information that can help people make sense of the perception of age and why there is sometimes a grieving process as we move from one developmental stage to the next. In western society, we often equate younger age with a litany of positive outcomes but it’s great to embrace and love your age at any stage of life.

  • @eileenderAris

Wow. This helped me see my future so differently. Being "old" was something my family used to tease each other about when we didn't act "up to par." Ageism is hidden so well in our everyday vocabulary that it's easy to miss! I love that I can say I am also 53 and act 53!!! Thank you so much for helping me see the world differently and see aging as a privilege. Honestly, it is pretty exciting!

It's just that people treat you differently than the age you are (or feel) when they see white hair and other signs of aging. That's what gets me, not my self-talk. Went out to a fun bar last night with my brother and the person at door says, "What are you youngsters up to tonight? Looking to stir up some trouble?" It can take the wind out of your sails!
