    The shader compilation process itself is generally performed on the CPU, not the GPU and only then once complied are the shaders are used by your GPU. Thats why your CPU usage was at 100%. So it really doesn't matter that you have a RTX 4090 GPU at least as far as time to compile the shaders is concerned.

    I think it's another example of why shader compilation should be an added task to the game installation workflow. Sure, it will take longer to finish the installation of games that require it, but you're not forcing your players to occupy their primary display with a game they shouldn't play for a long stretch of time, especially when they ultimately launched the game because they wanted to play it right now. Idk about you guys, but I don't launch new games in anticipation of shader compilation taking so much time that I will need that to run it while I do something else and come back to my PC later. Is this user-error? Partly, but I do think this is an indication that something needs to improve here.

    • @ShoobedoobeOG
      @ShoobedoobeOG ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@drakeizatt While you are correct, there are more creative solutions than what you are describing, such as a seperate executable that would not require any input from the user and could scale utilization based on other apps' needs. Pie-in-the-sky, perhaps, but harder problems have been solved in the gaming space, and this is directly and indirectly affecting the bottom line of companies if poor reviews due to user-error are impacting sales, which they no doubt are.

      It was actually what happened for me when I played Horizon Zero Dawn for the first time. I just went on doing some works, clean my room, make a little snack and play some games on my phone while the shader was compiling. And once it was done, I just had a blast playing the game and kinda forgot about all the time I was waiting. I guess it's like removing a bandaid. It's quite painful but then you forget about it.

    • @ShoobedoobeOG
      @ShoobedoobeOG ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@ainanomena9276 I don't disagree - I usually can spare 5-10 minutes prior to playing a game for shaders to compile. What I am getting at here is that there is not enough preventative measures to starting a game without compiled shaders. As games increase in complexity and resolution, while old/slow hardware is introduced to games like this likely due to poor price/performance in new hardware, shader compilation may take an hour or two for the average gaming rig in a few years. If we're having this problem already with a game that likely takes 30 minutes to an hour for the average gaming rigs, this issue will only exacerbate over time.

    • @theunhappygamer1744
      @theunhappygamer1744 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@drakeizatt Well the shaders are stored in a cache on the harddrive and then sent to the GPU and held in the VRAM which is why you only need to sit through a long shader compilation screen like that once when you first boot up the game for the first time, technically you could install shaders during the initial installation but the problem is that on PC every one has different drivers and different system configurations. This why the game needs to run before the shaders are compiled for the first time, it also allows you to take advantage of game ready drivers.

    You have probably one of the best PCs that you can get right now so it's not surprising that you aren't having any issues.
    I waited an hour for shader compilation and then got into the game and realized that despite having a 2070 super and an above recommended specs CPU, I can barely play the game with full medium settings at 1440p with DLSS on. So I even lowered it to 1080p, downscaled it to 720p, and was still having insane stuttering/freezing whilst barely managing 60fps, this all while lowering the more demanding settings which just made the game visually look worse than the PS3 version. My CPU at all times is pretty much maxing out at 100% no matter the combination of settings I use, so something is really hogging the CPU when it shouldn't be - not to mention CPU temps are going through the roof.
    For the most part I get what you're saying but this narrative that's starting to arise about how *most* people aren't waiting for shaders to compile is just frustrating. It's annoying that the "top negative" reviews are literally from people who probably didn't wait, because myself and many others have written pretty detailed reviews about the issues after a few hours of playtime and are pushed pretty far down.

    It’s one thing to compile shaders, but it’s another one to see it take this long and go over the 2-hour mark and pretty much prevent people from refunding due to optimisation.
    Horizon did launch with a rough state which people did forget! Shaders took for me, at the time, 15 minutes.
    IronGalaxy simply can’t port games to PC but they made some miracles for the Switch. And it’s a shame since they’ve been in rough times with Rumbleverse. We don’t know how much of the team is still there after the Arkham Knight PC debacle, but one thing is sure:
    No one should have to buy a PC as expensive as Luke’s to play this game and have it run at reasonable performances.

      You don’t have to. You’re exaggerating. No one said you have to MAX out games. That’s stupid. Every game on PC needs a specific hardware for it to work to its full potential. It’s an option. Like TF2. I don’t have all its options maxed out. I don’t care. And it’s an old game.
      For instance, Doom 2019 needs just a 4GB Vram to be maxed out, but the new STALKER game needs 10GB of Vram, what are you going to do, go out and spend a bit for a graphic card with 12GB, or are you just going to use what you have? Exactly. Use what you have.
      As long as you can play it smoothly, that’s all that matters.

    For me the big issue is vram usage. I only have an 8GB card and I have to run textures at medium, which quite frankly makes the environment looks pretty soft. It just seems like for the quality of textures it shouldn't take up so much ram. Along with this, there's also a memory leak that causes the game to, unsurprisingly, crash after playing for too long assuming it fills up your vram. You can fix this with a older version of a DLL, but that shouldn't be necessary. It still doesn't fix the very high VRAM usage.
    I think this could be because the PS5 essentially has 16GB of vram as all of its system memory, and Iron Galaxy didn't make the port utilize PCs generally slower system ram properly. Instead they just load it all into vram.

    WAIT FOR SHADERS TO FULLY LOAD, PLEASE. I cannot repeat this enough, NEVER start a game without the shaders loaded, as Skoddskar explained, shader loading is very CPU intensive and doing that on the background while you play is ASKING for FPS drops and crashes all over the place. Just be patient and wait, your PC and the game itself will thank you for it.
    I'm running a 3080 with an I9 12900k and obviously, this is quite a banger PC right now so I can't speak for people with lower end PCs. But this game looks ABSOLUTELY ASTONISHING. The graphics are fucking incredible at high presets.
    The title instantly marked my PC for most stuff on Highest settings, I did not touch anything on it except taking the camera blur away.
    After playing it for a bit I noticed some stutter when I moved my camera around, then I enabled DLSS on the Quality preset and boom, gone the stutter, doesn't matter, game looks insane anyway with it on.
    I've only experienced a few stutters whenever a new section is loaded when Joel drops down from somewhere or opens a door, thats it, in gameplay I had 0 issues.
    I played this at 1080p 144hz (I didn't have a FPS counter so I don't know if I was hitting that, but it ran smoothly af, never hindered my gameplay). Also, if you have a good SSD the game will not take long to load either. I played this WHILE streaming it at 1080p and most time loading was probably 5 seconds.
    Honestly, In my opinion Ive had pretty much no issues with Sony exclusives ports I played, I did all the other ones on a laptop with an I7 and a 2080 before this PC. I had 0 issues with GOW, Horizon, Detroit become human, The Uncharted games, Spider man or Miles Morales. The moment something doesn't run smoothly I just lower graphics a bit and I have no issues afterwards.
    Aight, thats my two cents on it. Thanks for the video Luke!

    So far I love this game. Iron Galaxy also ported Uncharted. There was a shader wait there too though not as long. This game took 2 hours + for me to compile and launch, on a current gen AMD highest tier GPU with 24GB of VRam. I waited, made coffee, got some laundry done. Once I let that finish and while playing, gave the shaders time to fully catch up - which in this game, can take an hour - causing hitching - after that at least for ME it ran pretty smooth. Make sure you download latest gpu drivers, and be patient. If you have a decent pc and a lot of vram, and an nvme, I think it should be ok if you're patient. I do think they could have released a lower req not-as-next-gen version with the option to play at reduced settings for mid tier kids out there. Specs: 5800X3D, 7900XTX, 3600 32GB, NVME - it took a long time on the Deck as well and frames with everything on lowest including FSR and frames locked to 30 still dips to 25. Not a great choice for the Deck as of now.

    i'll be damned if i need $15,000+ super gaming pc just to run this game as it should be without a hitch, then again we still see stutter and freeze of the game in this video

    Shaders are compiled on the CPU though. I have what I’d consider a mid-range gaming PC (Ryzen 5600X, Radeon 6700XT) and while it took about 45 minutes for my shaders to compile, I haven’t had a problem with the game yet.
    Granted I’ve been salivating to play TLOU since it came out and have somehow avoided all but 1 spoiler about the series in that decade or so. It’s taking everything in my soul to do anything BUT play the game.
    I understand where your criticism comes from but the 4090 has nothing to do with shader compilation from what I understand.

    I'm playing the game on an i9 10900KF, RX 7900 XT, Samsung 970 Evo Plus 2TB and 64GB of DDR4 at 3,200 mhz. I waited for the game to build shaders. My computer's cpu and gpu specs are above the PS5 specs. My PC has more cpu cores/threads and more vram than the PS5. The game defaulted to ultra settings at 4K and ran at a playable fps and still had terrible stutter and that was after all the shaders compiled. The only explanation I have for the game running terrible on my PC is that I don't have it installed on a pcie gen 4 nvme ssd that runs at the same speed or faster than the PS5's gen 4 nvme ssd. At least I got the game for free because of the promotion for buying an AMD graphics card!

    Shader Compilation is a problem. But vram usage isn't a surprise. It was an PS5 exclusive where it wasn't necessary to account for less vram. So having it run on PC after the fact can be an issue, unless they downgrade the assets, which they probably did for the lower options. Some users just don't seem to be comfy with using Medium or lower than Medium settings on a modern mid Tier gpu which is often more expensive than the whole console the game comes from.

    Apart from shader compilation, the problem for me is performance. I can run the most demanding titles on ultra at 50ish fps at worst, here I'm having to settle on high at around 40 fps (with DLSS!). And lots of stuttering.

    It took my PC 20-30 min to load shaders on a 3080 (10gb). After that, the game ran pretty well for me besides a few stutters here and there. This is on Ultra settings 1440p.

    TV feeds have a delay. It would've actually been better to see it in the window first, hear it a second later, and then we see/hear it on the TV 1-2 seconds after that.

    when I first booted the game, I waited for the shaders to build and all that, then after that, I started playing, the loading times were awful (the settings weren't maxxed out) game crashed once after Sarah dies (like damn game, mood) I restarted the game, it died again 20 minutes (of gameplay not spent waiting for the game to load the areas (which happens every other encounter)) and another time right before another encounter. AFTER the patch that fixed some of the issues, no more crashes happened, however, every time I change areas (trenches to buildings for example) the game would stop for a good 5 to 10 minutes spent waiting for the load to stop. I don't have the most performant PC, but it is decently powerful to where these issues shouldn't happen at all.

    I bet that at least 90% of PC players aren't even aware of what compiling shaders means, and I can't fault them for it when the game allows them to play it when it still needs to be done.
    To some this might be general knowledge, but the vast majority isn't aware of these things.

    I found out that my 13700K was thermal throttling due to the enormous CPU demand of this game. Once I undervolted the CPU and disabled the Turbo Boost in my BIOS, the game runs great. No stuttering, thermal throttling, or crashes. I have also not experienced any long shader loading times.

    I have an RTX 3080 and a Ryzen 5 5600x, I let the shaders compile, I played the game at 1440p High (auto detected) and I crashed FOUR times during the prologue and boston section together. Not even an hour (of gameplay) into the story and I crashed more times than I ever did playing Cyberpunk 2077 on my RTX 2060 Ryzen 5 2600x PC I had at the time...
    It's not the shader compilation that is the issue, it is the port. Something went wrong and it's causing all these random issues that some people have and some don't.

    I don't know if it's fair to use a high-end PC capable of brute force through most issues, I mean that's a 4090 with 24GB of VRAM nothing beats it, how about testing with recommended hardware and see if the game delivers on the promises?
