    Well in a way, this was a simple restoration. Disassemble, clean and and remove paint. Change out worn or damaged parts. Repaint and assemble. Pretty much straight forward, but it was so satisfying to watch and the end result was really good. I like how you stuck to the original paint and so on. My ocd is having a wonderful day. as a rule, you should always replace the old grinding stone with a new one.
    you'll never know the exact condition inside the disc and it might disintegrate and fly apart once it start spinning.
    not a criticism, just a safety tip i guess. great work btw.

    • @fredx6678
      @fredx6678 5 ปีที่แล้ว +59

      Wheel replacement is absolutely unnecessary. The method to check a grinding wheel is to tap it on the side while static and see if it has a thunk sound. Not a ring like a tight wheel would have. Also, whenever starting up a grinder, stand to the side while it spins up to prevent injury if it does in fact come apart. Again, every time you start a grinder, never stand in front of it.

    Hey man, love the videos! As a rule of thumb, I wouldn’t hammer those bearings on like that, you could end up messing up the bearing or the shaft. The best way to install bearings and races is to freeze the shaft if possible and heat the bearing to around 150-200 degrees; it’ll just slide right on and cool down tight, no hammering necessary.

    • @TheWiseDaws
      @TheWiseDaws 4 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      @Aaron david yes with a capacitor start motor the capacitor is used to help create a rotating magnetic field, then once the motor reaches a set rpm the capacitor is taken out of the circuit and the motor just runs off the single phase power. That’s one of the reasons why three phase motor are so elegant because with the three phases 120 degrees out of phase with each other already produces a perfect rotating magnetic field.

    • @phillipwright746
      @phillipwright746 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @Aaron david think of a capacitor like a battery. When you flip the switch to turn on the appliance, the capacitor unloads all its stored energy all at once giving the motor a jump start. Once the motor is turning the normal current takes over and the motor runs on its own.

      Now you have 2 grinders set one up with a linisher belt and a wire wheel for alloy grinding and general cleaning and the other with grinding wheels for steel. Put either or both on a moveable pedestal, so you can move them around to suit and if you do a lot of grinding move outside and not fill your workshop with grinding dust.

    Tysy! Quel grand projet et vidéo! Le moulin à banc s'est avéré magnifiquement. Je pensais que pendant que vous l'assemblez que ce serait bien si vous pouviez mettre votre logo dedans, et alors vous avez fait! Vous devez vous sentir satisfait de la façon dont cela s'est avéré-vraiment beau! Prends soin de toi, mon ami.
    What a great project and video! The bench grinder turned out beautifully. I was thinking while you were assembling it that it would be nice if you could put your logo on in, and then you did! You have to feel satisfied with how this turned out--really beautiful! Take care, my friend.

    Some types of electric motors need a capacitor to start smoothly. As soon as you asked "Why didn't it start?" I thought "Blown capacitor!"
    Then, when you discovered that huge capacitor in the silver can that "seemed a little swollen" it reinforced my theory.
    Replace that big, silver cap. The rating is printed on the cap itself & they're pretty cheap. It's a common repair, especially on items like tumble dryers.
    Costs pence but has amazing results. It's my first go to when an electric motor won't start without a little nudge.

    Small security advice: If you attach cables and you're lucky enough they come with ground, always make sure ground is the longest wire. If you trip over the cable and manage to somehow pull out the live wires and they accidentally touch the casing, you do not electrocute yourself. Also your GFCI (if you have one, in german it is FI-Schutzschalter) will pop!

      capacitor wasn't anymore working so wasnt able to provide the supply power for the spike when the motor starts. also, with rust and bearings in poor condition mecanical resistance increase the load at the start. that's why when he spinned manually the grinder start rotating

    • @arcuz7862
      @arcuz7862 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @Magnús Már Magnússon Total nonsense, this thing draws 1,3A when running. Even if we are generous and assume it's startup is ten times that number (which is unreasonable considering the size of the motor) any socket is easily capable of putting that out consistently. The capacitor is shot, failing to create the elliptical rotary field the motor needs in order to spool up and run. Even if you now start it by hand it will run clunky and wobbly, another indicator of a shot capacitor. Third and final nail in the coffin of your theory is that the capacitor is swollen. When he would've measured the capacity it would've been around 1-2 µF.

    Unless you know exactly where this grinder has been since it was last used and just how long its been sitting wasting away. You'd be far better off and much safer to just replace the grinding wheels. There could be micro cracks from age, stress, possible water that froze in the wheel or any number of other causes. Those wheels could very well shatter if used again.

    This is the beauty of old machinery, you can take pretty much anything apart using a phillips screwdriver, a flat head screwdriver and a set of socket wrenches.
