Antique Hand Cranked Grinder - Restoration

  • In this video i'm restoring a very old hand cranked grinder.
A few weeks ago I visited my friend and we took a closer look at his barn, looking for something interesting to restore. As soon as I saw this hand cranked grinder, I knew that this would make a nice restoration video. It was all covered in wood dust and the visble steel parts were very rusty. It was still working, but the grinding wheel was very unbalanced.
When I was cleaning the parts with the parts washer I found a lot of nails and screws in the gearbox, I guess I was very lucky that I didn't found any teeth from the gears. The pin connection from one gear was damaged very hard. I filled it all up with welding and machined all surfaces clean again.
I decided to make a brass sleeve for the wooden handle and glued it in with epoxy.
I only cleaned the grinding wheel with high pressure water and it worked very well. Due to the age of the grinder and the cleaning with the water, the two paper discs were lost. That's why I printed two new ones with my logo on it and they turned out very nice. They're there to lower the pressure on the grinding wheel from the clamping.
The cover plate from the gearbox didn't fit at all, it didn't even cover everything. Because of that I decided to make a new one.
For the painting I choose a black coat, as it was originally, I used filler on it to get a nice and smooth finish.
I'm very happy how this project turned out, I'll keep this item for myself for display.
I hope you like my work and the video.

I know I'm late, but, I think I have an idea on why those screws were in the gearbox.
When you first tested out the crank, the whole thing was obviously unbalanced. I think the last person that used it had a similar problem. So they put leftover pieces of metal (( Screws )) to try and weigh it down in an attempt to stop the vibrating. With the whole thing well greased like it was, my guess was that the screws were first causing rattling when spinning the wheel. The grease just made the screws more silent. But, that's just my theory.

Estimado señor, he visto varios de sus vídeos y me llama la atención que el lugar siempre se ve limpio y sus manos también, y no se ven lastimadas prueba de que es Usted sumamente cuidadoso
    Muchas felicitaciones

This isn't a restoration dude. This is a restomod. No way did this tool look this nice from any factory. Nice work my man. Turned out beautiful.

By the way, I actually have a hand crank grinder. Not this particular one, but similar. Very cool.

This guy is an absolute genius, he's problem-solving skills are off the charts - Every time he says 'I make a new one', I'm like please do!

What? Those aren't problem solving skills in any way. He's just remaking something that already existed by using it as a reference.

Me at 12:14: -Nah man, you can't restore a grinding wheel, it's impossible..
Also me at 13:03: - I allways knew you could!
Incredible man, keep up the outstanding work!

Dressing a grinding wheel is not black arts, though.

If you look really close he's hiding the huge chip with his thumb when he shows it off. Can't blame him, the only thing that would get rid of it is making the wheel quite a but smaller.

if you actually need a diamond tool to reshape those, it makes me wonder how do you make them in the first place...
i mean, sharpening wheels have existed for quite a while now, long before diamonds were readily available, did they just grind it round with another stone ?

    • @taotuhao5969
      @taotuhao5969 4 ปีที่แล้ว

@@electrostatic1 The wheel is smaller, in height and width, and I don't see the chip. Though I thought that I spotted it until I slowed down the speed . Can you provide the time marker? Obviously, it still works. But if there is a chip, I want to see it as well. thanks.

All of the abrasive particles that he “machined” off of that grinding wheel are now on his lathe and that is a no no.

Aside from your polishing, my second favorite thing is the sand blasting. I love how it refreshes the surface and allows a pristine surface to work on be it for painting or bluing.

I love how you actually info prices and time spent. Some of these arent restores, you are building a newer better version than the original. Would you call the 6 Million Dollar Man a restore? Keep em coming!
