thank you very much for that ! very informative, its something ive never really messed with, if anything goes wrong with a diff in my shop we usually fire it straight in the bin
I welded the diff on my friends car the best thing to do is pull it and weld it with a stick welder using high amps with 11018 rod or spray arc on a wire feed. and I am a welder by trade not some average garage mechanic with a 110V wire feed.
its a gm limited slip thats for 1988and up gm 10 bolts in pickups. It came from a rearend shop that rebuilds rearends. Its used but was found to be in new shape. GM had these as an option that most don't pay extra for, but it works like a posi where both wheels will always spin but unlike a locker it will give a little going around corners so you don't have the wheel chirp. Looks like a posi unit, has springs and stuff to lock the axles up.
Hell yeah my buddy had this on a Willys Jeep and let me tell you it works! He lincoln locked front AND rears.......44 super swampers also helped. I saw him drive it through a pond
Obviously no one on here who makes lame comments has ever drove a trail rig or used it to make a drift car. I have owned plenty of welded rear differentials and never had a problem. I have owned Detroit lockers and granaded them. You can spend the 600-1000 on a diff locker or you can weld it for next to nothing. If you have huge tires or tons of power then it would probably be best for a Dana axle with real diff lockers. Though for the average Joe this is a cheap way to go.
Ive done heavy repair on dump trucks and machinery for 10 years and use brake clean daily to prep my weld surface. Brake clean is used because of the lack of residue. this is common practice when TIG welding aluminum; to get the cleanest arc possible. Enter any weld shop and youll find a can of brake/parts cleaner if not 50.
I own a welding business. Never heard any weldors call it spatter. We (weldors) call it splatter. And yes I'm saying weldor which is a person that welds. Welders are the machines.
we all weld our differentials on our demolition derby trucks .to my knowledge have not heard or seen any fails.some guys running 400 big block and bigger
you can get chlorine free brake cleaner but I prefer varsol or alcohol, its actually the welding arc (ultra violet light) that reacts with the chlorine and creates mustard gas...it can create gas on a patch of chlorine 50 foot away from the light traveling
what brand is it Detroit locker and ill have to think about it how long can you wait im repaint the truck now and i have the money for it i just want to get the paint done first r u in a hurry to sell it because i will buy it but i could be a couple weeks and you said it was brand new right?
may i ask Why do u need to weld the Web gears to the case thingy as im aussie n 14 and getting a vx commodore to do up as a burnout/Drag car and just wondering How many Amp Arc welder i need how many MM Rod will i need and Any More Info will b Great :)
When doing this be sure to heat up the "basket" with a blow torch. The basket on most rear end models are made of cast iron which can be welded but only at a hot temperature will you be able to get a solid structural weld when welding the gears to the basket. Been a welder for 5 years now I've picked up a thing or 2. Take the extra 5 minutes to preheat the gears and the basket before welding. You'll be better off in the long run. Otherwise the welds to the basket will crack under pressure
Even posi-trac has some slip of sorts. What you did was strait up locked. great for off road and drag strips. but groovy vid anyways if someone wants a fully locked rear so that both tires are getting equal power from the engine but kinda hard on the tires
thanks @oldchevyshed for the video. no other video actually showed me exactly where and what they were welding. this is 1000% cheaper than an eaton locker in terms of no out of pocket cost. IF IT DOES BREAK, the gears are like factory 2.73 so its no big deal.
how much welding experience do i need to doo this? i can make whip and pause pretty good and they hold good, i was thinking if went with the cannon ball welding method and used bolts and other filler i should hold. what do you think?
i know i can weld good enough to do this is there any side affects i was thinking about buying a another rear end and doing it to it. or one from the junk yard i have a 89 Chevy k1500 step side Scottsdale and i have custom paint in doing and new motor going in i heard about this i only have 1 tire fire and she just roast them i have to drive in 4 wheel everywhere in winter impossible to drive. but can this unbalance the rear end please help or is this for cars that wont go 140+mph
@Mr1deerslayer You wont be able to heat all the oil on that diff to make it burn..it will burn for a second just where you weld, and then extinguish. cuz of the temp of the cold iron, the fire wont spread...
Okay, a few points need to be made just to clear things up. 1.This is why they sell chlorinated and non brake cleaner. Use non, if there's any unevaporated chlorinated brake cleaner it reacts with the light and heat from welding to produce chlorine gas, just a little whiff of which does all kind of serious and possibly lethal damage. 2. Positraction (posi) is GMs trademark name for a limited slip diff. This is not posi. 3. This is for offroad use, on the road your asking for problems.
@trkklr77 what is a tig? is that like a stick welder? thats what i have. im worried about the oil catching on fire. my welder is really powerful, and its just a little scary is all. if you could please inform me of a safe way to do this i would really appreciate.
@oldchevyshed I think the same about streetcar. You wouldnt be able to do a good corner without unnecessary wearing out the tires if you weld it. thanks
I work with refrigerants every day and make phosgene gas when I braze. Has not killed me yet and have been doing it for 30 years. I highly doubt that the amount on a pin will hurt you at all.
@eddohan its also a cheap thing that us budget drifters do if we dont have posis cause most drift cars just have open diffs and to drift you need both wheels to have power.
This is true to an extent... Its not a problem with non chlorinated cleaner. Phosgene is made with chlorine. If you are going to clean metal to weld and feel the need to use brake cleaner make sure it says "NON CHLORINATED"
@KayC2SLO I want to do this to my truck but ive heard its hard to turn if you do this? i just dont wanna fuck up my truck ya know? any tips or advice would be awesome!
@gordonsandvig that's actually one of the only few true things, it's a bit harder to turn. it's also true that there's just that much more stress on your axle, but trucks have beefier axles than a car anyway. my s14 has been welded for 2 years, daily driven, and the only thing that bugs me is that i can no longer wait a few years before changing tires - but then again, i always burn 'em every chance i get, so it makes no difference to me. if you're scared, buy a 1.5 =\
just in my opinion and so far has worked well with no failing or broken welds.... 220 mig might be too light as well for this. I work in an industrial welding shop and used the welder at work .... millermatic 350 mp running on 480 volt 3 phase power source setting my welder up to about 28.5 volts..... aka, spray weld. very strong very clean literally no spatter if done properly . so in my opinion I would use a much more powerful welder than 220 just to be on the safe side ,,,, cuz when you think about it this is youre differential afterall ... do you really wanna be questioning youre welded diff. while full throttle down the 1/4 mile .. or whatever youre intended use is
after useing brake cleaner you can just go threw it with a air compressor nd blow out any brake cleaner thats left nd that stuff evaporates fast so if u do it on a warm sunny day leave it out for like 20 mins in the sun nd ull be fine
If you weld the spider gears and turn a corner the handling will be lousy. In a right hand turn the left rear wheel has to turn faster than the right wheel and vice versa for a left turn. This only would be good for straight runs.
Its doesn't have the gears, you can use your gears or buy new ones. Its just the differential. Also you have to stay with your gear ratio, unless you match with the front.
@oldchevyshed hey just lookin out but ive heard it is very bad to weld on somthing thats had brake kleen/solvents on it,as in toxic bad.but i suppose if your in a shop with fans and good ventilation, and a mask its all good
Simon. Of course you shouldnt. The diff is there for a reason. Essentially to make steering easier. I dont really know what the guy in the clip is trying to achieve. He is making a solid axel not a posi.
@eddohan to get true four wheel drive, four wheel drives now days are not True Four wheel, unless they have lockers or are welded. There are only 2 domestic manufactures that make a true four wheel drive, Jeep makes one model (the Rubicon) and Hummer
@KayC2SLO well im 16 and im not planning on having this truck for a long time. just for like 2 years till i can afford a better truck. so would you reccomend it, btw i have a 1992 ford ranger 4x4
FYI this doesnt make it a POSI rear end. also this makes it a bitch to turn and wears your tires out faster. If you have stock axles this will cause them to twist more than normal causing them to break. so unless you want to spend more money in tires and costly axle repairs would not suggest welding your gears together.
@masterkronixster ok dude... it was wet and I was sliding around... really did not know it would turn out the way it did since I usually do it when dry, lol, and It may sound over-exaggerated and thats my bad, but really I think you comment would be more toward a post in that I actually crashed, which I did not, now then.... I have figured out how to do it when its wet out, it was just throttle control... thats all now I can do it no problem :D now for you to retort back with more trolling...
@eddohan some people just do it if they don't wanna spend the extra for an e-locker or limited slip. i got some older hs friends with trucks that took this cheap root. stupid if you have expensive tires though, skkrreeeechhhh
Settle down. Time was they actually sold cars w/ straight axles. I learned to drive in a crew cab w/ a straight axle. Fun as all getout on a dirt road. Yes, bad oversteer and eats tires. So?
My spiders are wearing but everything else seems ok....may weld it and send it while I save for 456 setup

Why doesn't he just drop carrier out and remove ring gear to ensure slag does not get inside anywhere? Keep left and right hardware separate and put shims back in the way they came out. And use a arc welder if using a mig preheat that carrier and spiders before welding.
thank you very much for that ! very informative, its something ive never really messed with, if anything goes wrong with a diff in my shop we usually fire it straight in the bin

thats funny cause whenever i see a big ass pile of ants i use brake cleaner then light them on fire....

NEVER use BRAKE CLEANER to clean for welding. Brake cleaner can release a toxic and deadly gas when heated up (while welding)
you can get chlorine free brake cleaner but I prefer varsol or alcohol, its actually the welding arc (ultra violet light) that reacts with the chlorine and creates mustard gas...it can create gas on a patch of chlorine 50 foot away from the light traveling
Will welding the gears to the housing, keep the axles from breaking?
what brand is it Detroit locker and ill have to think about it how long can you wait im repaint the truck now and i have the money for it i just want to get the paint done first r u in a hurry to sell it because i will buy it but i could be a couple weeks and you said it was brand new right?
Thanks for the info man great simple help by the way was thia a mopar rearend?

@fiddlerpin yep thats why people use it in demolition derby, drag racing, and circle track and not really on the street
Even posi-trac has some slip of sorts. What you did was strait up locked. great for off road and drag strips. but groovy vid anyways if someone wants a fully locked rear so that both tires are getting equal power from the engine but kinda hard on the tires
if you want to use it on the road get a front detroit locker but you have to drive it with the front locker engaged
thanks @oldchevyshed for the video. no other video actually showed me exactly where and what they were welding. this is 1000% cheaper than an eaton locker in terms of no out of pocket cost. IF IT DOES BREAK, the gears are like factory 2.73 so its no big deal.

De-greases my stuff damn well, it's not just a penetrate. The alcohol cleans all the residue left behind. Cleans well enough to tack to your skin.
Rock Crawling and Drifting is the only place where you would want something locked, and not necessarily all the time.
@jimmy86freedom 05-present power wagons. E-locker front and rear. (And only the H1's)
@Mr1deerslayer You wont be able to heat all the oil on that diff to make it burn..it will burn for a second just where you weld, and then extinguish. cuz of the temp of the cold iron, the fire wont spread...
Does it burn fluid if it's welded and u drive it a lot
Definitely THE way to go!
Okay, a few points need to be made just to clear things up.

always clean the rear end with brakeclean whether your rebuilding, or if your crazy enough to weld up your spiders! Have fun turning!
That makes a full 100% locking diff not a posi.
Will this damage the car in any way over time ?
where im from they call that lincoln lockers!!!
@KayC2SLO I want to do this to my truck but ive heard its hard to turn if you do this? i just dont wanna fuck up my truck ya know? any tips or advice would be awesome!
very good instructions, this really helped.
I would think it wouldn't even be suited for circle track racing, just straight runs
how much for it??
@gordonsandvig that's actually one of the only few true things, it's a bit harder to turn. it's also true that there's just that much more stress on your axle, but trucks have beefier axles than a car anyway. my s14 has been welded for 2 years, daily driven, and the only thing that bugs me is that i can no longer wait a few years before changing tires - but then again, i always burn 'em every chance i get, so it makes no difference to me. if you're scared, buy a 1.5 =\
this what we call a lincoln locker. perfect for use in a demo derby car
@eddohan they do this a lot for drift cars its cheaper then getting a LSD
just use tig no splatter and it's stronger ,,, ive been welding pipe for 35 yrs
@eddohan its a cheap way to make a posi and you can do this for off roading
do you know the gearing in it??
just in my opinion and so far has worked well with no failing or broken welds.... 220 mig might be too light as well for this. does it work welding the front axle too
not a good idee! unllesse you dont turn, you want lsd or a mecanicle locker
in the front
BDW locking is for off road or drift ect
@oldchevyshed or for a 'always off road' buggy or crawler!
@eddohan Also cheap 4x4 method for the rear diff on crummy jeeps without diff lock etc.
cheers 4 the video man.........i no wot im doin 2 my bush basher lol
after useing brake cleaner you can just go threw it with a air compressor nd blow out any brake cleaner thats left nd that stuff evaporates fast so if u do it on a warm sunny day leave it out for like 20 mins in the sun nd ull be fine
I dont get it. Why do you want to destroy the working of the differential by locking it?
don't forget to clean any remaining Break cleaner out! welding on certain types of break cleaner can Kill you almost instantly!
That is what I was gonna comment sound like guy inhaled to much brake clean already
What do you clean it with ?
Don't most brake cleaners just evaporate anyway?
Use a few shop rags to jam up the gears
If you weld the spider gears and turn a corner the handling will be lousy. In a right hand turn the left rear wheel has to turn faster than the right wheel and vice versa for a left turn. This only would be good for straight runs.
What he's doing is hacking the sht out of that rear.
posi's have clutch plates which are meant to slip. This setup welded has no slip.
That's actually a limited slip...... which can be more/ less aggressive depending on thy clutch pack
i have a limited slip that will fit your 89 if you want one. Bought it and didn't install and now my trucks up for sale.
@fiddlerpin thats what i was thinking. this is more like a spool.
@oldchevyshed Demo or drifting on the cheap.
Its doesn't have the gears, you can use your gears or buy new ones. Its just the differential. Also you have to stay with your gear ratio, unless you match with the front.
This is what is refered to as a Lincoln Locker by old school.
@nwfklan u dont think a welder gets really hot? lol
180.00 shipped. Thats about 70 bucks less than i paid for it, and i could send pictures of it. has bearings to that are in good shape.
Use kero to degrease then acetone or ethanol as a surface prep.

Then how should you cleen it... just wonderin so i dont die
@eddohan to get true four wheel drive, four wheel drives now days are not True Four wheel, unless they have lockers or are welded. There are only 2 domestic manufactures that make a true four wheel drive, Jeep makes one model (the Rubicon) and Hummer
nice man!
locks both axles so you have traction at all times
Ah, I see. That makes more sense. Thanks.
It's not really something you would want on tarmac though.
For offroading of course, if you dont know why you'd weld your spider gears, dont go offroading!
@KayC2SLO well im 16 and im not planning on having this truck for a long time. just for like 2 years till i can afford a better truck. so would you reccomend it, btw i have a 1992 ford ranger 4x4
@twig686 No it's not brakleen evaporates in seconds.
Have fun trying to turn
FYI this doesnt make it a POSI rear end. also this makes it a bitch to turn and wears your tires out faster. If you have stock axles this will cause them to twist more than normal causing them to break. so unless you want to spend more money in tires and costly axle repairs would not suggest welding your gears together.
I have full posi on my daily and the only time I have issues is when it rains
@masterkronixster ok dude... it was wet and I was sliding around... really did not know it would turn out the way it did since I usually do it when dry, lol, and It may sound over-exaggerated and thats my bad, but really I think you comment would be more toward a post in that I actually crashed, which I did not, now then.... I have figured out how to do it when its wet out, it was just throttle control... thats all now I can do it no problem :D now for you to retort back with more trolling...
what does one do if they just dont want the limited slip? I dont like it... it almost killed me...
@eddohan some people just do it if they don't wanna spend the extra for an e-locker or limited slip. i got some older hs friends with trucks that took this cheap root. stupid if you have expensive tires though, skkrreeeechhhh
@321CrashandBurn naah, its just welding.
i laughed when he says splatter, instead of spatter.
So delete the video? What's worse. Starting over on views, or liability for someone's death?
Can anybody tell me how well these welds hold up im thinking about welding the rear end on my 4x4
Like a champ if done right! Not something you want to do if you drive on the street much..
Or you can use wd40 to degrease and then use %99 alcohol to clean then compressed air, been doing that for some time now.
Well you took the time to comment, obviously didnt take the time to read. Its not his video.
lol, oil does not burn untill its all reeeeeeally hot. try lighting a cup of oil...
Don't use chlorinated brake-clean or you risk generating phosgene gas when you weld it up.
Back in the day we called this a ( Lincoln Locker ).....

Posi is an american version of a VLSD!
try wd40 instead of brake cleaner leave it wet it gives a great weld try it it works
@ddggffy oh and by the way, it's FWDs that can't hold their own on a welded diff, just sayin'
A few drops of vaporized brake cleaner can release a fatal dose of phosgene gas.
Avoid this by using a non-chlorinated solvent before welding.
buy a spool if you're worried about balance.
