    Erin, regarded your Spanish…
On a great note…your kids will never forget English!! Unlike, Mexican kids who come to the US and forget how to properly speak Spanish. Your babies will be fluent in both languages and I think that’s awesome 👏🏽

You're right on the correction . I've been married over 40 yrs and my husband still corrects me on my spanish and I'm Chicana. I say but you understand me, he says he does but doesn't want me to be made fun of. My Son married a girl from Colima Mx. and she has learned alot of English with us. She's been a legal resident for about 20 yrs and a US Citizen now. She'll say things like pick it up the trash instead of pick up the trash. But I don't correct her.

As a speech-language pathologist, I just want to validate what Erin is saying. Not only did I study language acquisition, but I also moved to France at 31 without knowing how to speak French.
Erin is correct that language acquisition comes much quicker and much more naturally when you are a child. I won't bore you with specifics, but there are vital timelines in language acquisition that determine your likelihood to be able to accurately detect and produce the sounds in a language, depending on how old you are when you are exposed to that language. So, as an adult, you will always hear an accent. Yes, there are extreme exceptions, but we are speaking of the norm.
It was the same for me when I lived in France. I'm not sure if it was this way for Erin, but first, I started to detect the natural breaks in the sentences and words, then I started to understand more words, etc. I was able to have quite detailed conversations pretty quickly with almost anyone about many things like doctor's appointments, at the grocery store, etc. But my grammar and pronunciation were terrible. The accent is very hard to break if you are leaning as an adult and it will stay with you. The proper grammar can certainly be learned, but life happens and sometimes there is little time left for grammar classes when you are, raising a family, building a house, running a business, etc.
Also, it is very common for bilingual children to be late talkers in one or both of their languages. But it is SO good for kids to be raised to be bilingual. I actially used to have a lot of Hispanic families I worked with be concerned that they were doing something wrong by speaking Spanish only with their children (because they didn't know English or they didn't know it will enough) and their communities would often notice the children speaking late and they thought something was wrong, but I always encouraged them to speak their native language with their children. Their children were already learning English at school and other places. The silent period is typical and it is because their little brains are actually forming so many connections. Being raised in a bilingual household or community is a huge blessing. It is so good for your brain in so many ways, let alone all of the cultural reasons it's so good.

For those of you out there wondering how big it’s going to be, 12x12 meters is around 1500 square feet , subtract for the concrete blocks and bricks, around 1100 square feet of living space, plus another 1000 for the second floor, you are looking at around 2000 square feet of living space. Average 3 or 4 bedroom house in the US is around 2800 square feet. Depending on the size of the master bedroom.

Also the bigger the house the more it cost to heat and cool, not to mention cleaning it.

@@ricardo5301 Thank you ! That actually helps me a lot. Also, for the heating and cooling we don't have that in the rancho. The tile floors and the way they build keeps it cool in the heat and warm in the cold. Its like magic lol but it is a good thing we don't have to worry about that part of it.

Your children are SO blessed to have such a beautiful school experience. We have lost so much common sense in the schools in the U.S. I homeschool (real homeschool, (not public school i
On the computer) now, but my son went to public school until the 6th grade. I am a speech-language pathologist and I worked in the schools and there are so many issues.
I fought with the schools for years, asking why they allowed cellphones. I hated that I could not give my son a phone, but he could see anything on a friend's phone at recess.
I have always hated the Americam school lunches too. Unhealthy, processed food. I always made my son's lunches, but sometimes he wanted the "cool" school lunch. I have always made my son healthy food. I have never raised him on chicken nuggets, hot dogs, plain pasta and all the plain, beige, processed food so many Americans see as "kid" food. There is no kid food. Kids will grow accustomed to what you feed them from the beginning.
Erin, if you send your kids to school with an American lunch, please don't embarrass us American moms by sending them with grilled cheese 🤣.

Was out at Target and missed the live …until now… 😕
Agree with Lalo, not everyone needs a college degree, skilled labor workers are in high demand right now. But if they do choose to go to the Uni….it’s pretty obvious that you are supportive parents…why would anyone question that…
…and I for one am glad that Lalo doesn’t correct Erin every time she speaks a word incorrectly.
So looking forward to all the updates…
…40k will come real quick!…can’t wait to see the small horse in the rancho.
    Love LOVE watching you guys!

I learned Spanish at age 21 and was kind of immersed, even though I was in Dallas, TX. Fortunately languages come easy to me (at least they did back then - who knows 40 years later?? 😂), and I became completely fluent. Also, Spanish is a natural fit for me - I don’t know if I could do that in Chinese! I was a person who always wanted to be corrected, and told people to please correct me. Even so, most people felt bad and didn’t, but a few did which I was always grateful for. But I try to respect if others want to be corrected or not. If someone prefers not to be corrected, in either language, I try to keep my mouth shut. My husband doesn’t speak a lot of English, but he manages to communicate quite fine when we have English-only speakers around. I’ve learned to only correct him once in a while. Otherwise, like you Erin, he will just shut down and not speak any English.

Very humble and best to let the people that are passionate and trained in that speciality. Your home is going to be superb and you both will put your own special touches on it as you go. In Canada our Catholic schools elementary and high school have to wear uniforms also and they are strict about it too.. throughout the last few yrs I’ve also seen public schools started wearing uniforms.. i fee in my opinion that it saves so much money when the kids have uniforms and not having to go out and buy the in things which can be very expensive for a lot of parents….

Yes, that’s the way I raised my kids. With my first I always spoke to him in English. When he was 2 my husband told me start talking to him in Spanish or else he’s not going to know it. So I started in both languages. I grew up speaking enough Spanish to get along but it was pretty broken . We moved to the Imperial Valley in California which borders Mexicali B.C. Mexico. We went across the border often. Spanish was spoken more fluent in the valley and my In-laws only spoke Spanish so I became fluent as did my children. Sad part my grandchildren are not fluent.

Erin, I feel like Michigan was not the best place to gauge the standards of the states. Here in Las Vegas the teachers are so close to the students and families. We give hugs and love and very involved with their social and educational development. I feel like hearing the comparison between Mexico and Michigan is between just that. It’s not like other states. I definitely would not want to visit Michigan after all the videos I have been watching. Love Lalo you and the kids. Come visit another state! We can host you 💗

One more thing I learned from our house build in Mexico. Make sure they put in enough electrical outlets. Often traditional Mexican built homes don’t have so many outlets, then you have to run extension cords. I made sure they put in more than enough (after the first room built didn’t have enough).

    # reverse discrimination. They should appreciate the fact you were trying to help and teach you. No one knows anything new to them without training. I feel so bad for you that they made you feel so alone and embarrassed that you didn't know how they do things. If you had been a new Mexican mama, I bet they would have handled things differently. Not very nice 😕
