  • When we decide how to feel about someone, we’re making character judgments, and the primary criteria that shape these judgments are strength and warmth. So do we choose to project warmth, so people like us? Or do we instead show strength, so we command respect?
Matthew Kohut is co-author of Compelling People: The Hidden Qualities that Make Us Influential, and the managing partner of KNP Communications. His writing has appeared in publications ranging from Harvard Business Review to Newsweek.

Loved his book Compelling People. I understand that this talk leaves a lot of questions around whether or not is good to be warm, strong or both. In his book he digests this further and you'll find arguments for this reasoning. Personally, I discovered that my primarily focus was to be on the "warm-side"; pleasing people and being nice to them. I've often been surprised to see how this can come at a cost, and now realize that this is due to an undeveloped "strong-side". Therefore, as you very little focus on getting the things you desire, you become a very easy target for others to take advantage of or ridicule.

Right on Matt. However, you were never the person in the back. One of the best observers I know. Connection with leaders is about strength and warm but add in integrity for long term effectiveness. Thanks for sharing.

This is an opinion piece. Would've liked if he had presented some support for his argument that (strength + warmth) > strength alone or warmth alone. Even the categories seem arbitrary. Why can't the two qualities be trust and Ability or some two positive random qualities
