- Like no other part of the world, Newfoundland offer some striking nature
experiences. I spent two weeks travelling around the island and this video covers what to do and how you can plan your visit to this wonderful province of Canada.

I'm an American and after losing my mother last June, who was born and bred in Newfoundland, I am leaving the USA and coming "home."
I'm so sorry for your loss. NL is such a wonderful place with some of the nicest people out there. Wish you all the best with your new chapter in life

Newfoundland is back to basics. The basics of life, emotion, responsibilities, nature, friendships. Its nice to see newly arrived immigrants from Africa, Eastern Europe and the Middle East enjoy the simplicity of Newfoundland. To be accepted for who they are and to be part of a warm and peaceful community. It does not have the wealth or international flair of Vancouver, Boston or New York. In fact that is what makes it so inviting.
The people in NL are really something else, I mean we got invited to people's home and was even offered to stay the night!

BAHAHAHAHAHAHA!! what a crock. I lived in the southern US for years and I can tell ya newfies are way more racist than southerners, and southerners have a reputation for tending to be racist.
Maybe you should talk about the rampant drug problems, skyrocketing crime rate, or the recent human trafficking, I repeat HUMAN TRAFFICKING that has been going on the past several years

@@joakimnorrby We stayed in Deer Lake and spent a good bit of time in Gros Morne, I loved the Tablelands! We also went a few days in St. John’s. We ended our trip in Nova Scotia which was amazing as well.

A fellow Newfie here, surprising to see you not do the "Kiss the Cod" 'screech-in' the Newfie swearing-in while you were here, that's an event of its self lol, also many great places you've missed, all the water falls, rivers an animals and whales etc
I wish I would have done the screeched-in heard from friends that it's a very fun experience. As far as the other things go... They serve as a good reason to come back to the province :)

Looks like you have a great trip to Newfoundland. Welcome to the island.
The Tragically Hip loved Mistaken Point enough to include it in the song Fly. Along that route, you passed Saint Vincent's where the whales come right close to the shore in June.
The Puffins do come across the gap fairly often. If you're staying in the area, keep trying! Pack a picnic and walk out to Cable John Cove (just past Spillars Cove near Bonavista). Cable John Cove is one of my favourite spots in Newfoundland. Have your lunch and boil up a coffee. It's very chill. For those that enjoy local restaurants and scenery, be sure to stop into Trinity, and Old Bonaventure along this route.

Hi Robert, You are definitely right about it needs a little more patience and time spotting puffins. In hindsight we should have stayed in the area a little longer and waited for the wind to settle.
It would be a great experience to go back and see the icebergs and whales.
Mistaken Point was a very humbling experience, when you are surrounded in a landscape that is so old. I am actually listening to the Tragically Hips song as I am writing this. Had an idea some time ago to listen to all their albums for a youtube video in my project to understand Canadian culture, but realized it wouldnt be much of a visual experience :)

Great video and summary. Most people don’t get to see that much on their trips so you did a lot. I would say 1 day is too little in St. John’s. But no more than a week. Only 3 meals (usually) in a day and St. John’s is a foodie town so that what I would say you might have missed out on.

I came here to say that 1 day is too little as well. Need 3 days minimum, tho a week is preferable.
Being a townie I absolutely agree with you guys, one day is not enough.
I agree that one day isn't enough since there were things that I did miss out on such as the jellybean row, being screeched in and some restaurants. My bad! :)

PS During 9/11, there were planes diverted to the airport at Gander. Far and Away was a musical based on the experiences of the passengers and townspeople. And I think mummery is a Christmas tradition in NF too.
Actually the celebrated musical about 9/11 is "Come From Away" by Sankoff and Hein. And it is fantastic if you get a chance to see it!

I never experienced anything like it, amazing is the right word for sure!
As an Newfie myself, my favorite place to visit is the Salmonier Nature Park and The terra Nova National Park, St.John's is always fun for shopping and sight seeing - I haven't been there in an while. I live 20 minutes outside of Clarenville, so that means 3 hour drive to St.Johns - gas has gotten so expensive.
Hi Maria, those are great tips, haven't heard about them before and Salmonier looked very "cozy" in lack of a better word with the pathways :)

🤧 Doing your time at the Salmonier Line. I think they shut down that place didn't they? Had shares in that place, use to visit every couple years.
I've traveled all over the province but like you said with the price of gas it's getting harder , we usually pick a area every year and go to a park then use that as a base for each day. Unfortunately I didn't start a TH-cam until recently or I could have done a documentary LOL.
You drove right past my house on the most southern tip when you did the Irish Loop (St. Vincent's/St. Mary's area), glad to see you enjoyed my home province!
I had to look it up on google maps and I remember it quite well. That place must have some great sunsets I reckon. Thanks, I really appreciated going there!

A trip in Newfoundland I would suggest is to go around the Irish Loop on southern part , I've lived here for the past 20 years and have made that trip several times, going again soon . Beautiful ! The Loop going south from St. John's has more amenities and facilities than the road on the west side coming back up to St. John's but the scenery makes up for it
I can totally see that. When we left st john's it was already dark so missed it pretty much. Next time!

People complain about the weather when they visit. My question is can you experience that kind of nature anywhere else in the world? Nfld is unique in so many ways, all you gotta do is look and listen.
For sure! The nature is unreal, differs a lot from the east to the west coast.

As a Newfoundlander I enjoyed your video, Twillingate is definitely a beautiful location my daughter bought a vacation home there last year and we spent a lot of time there this year. You missed the ice berg that are often in Twillingate i will add a link to a video i did there last summer of ice bergs and fishing to give you an indication of what they were like there last summer.

I really hoped to see an iceberg during my trip but was a bit out of luck this time. It was cool to see Twillingate, a town quite isolated thriving with culture and great restaurant. I understand why your daughter bought a house there, it is a small jewel. Thanks, will check out your video!

@@joakimnorrby South of Port Aux Basques in Rose Blanche there is a great little reconstructed stone lighthouse. A really underappreciated spot. Something to do before grabbing the ferry.

Glad you had a great time here! 1:04 Just a little correction -- rather than near Saint Vincent's., Mistaken Point is farther east, across Trepassey Bay, near the extreme south-east of the island.

It’s a medium size city compared to the rest of Atlantic Canada (4th), but a very small city compared to the rest of Canada and the world. For instance, if it were in Ontario, it would be approximately 22nd-25th based on individual civic populations.
Bowring Park in St John’s a must see. On your way to Bonavista, don’t overlook Trinity!

Planning a motorcycle trip there.
That sounds like a great idea. I would recommend checking out some free camping websites that shows maps. We did this with our campervan, and went with the highest rated sites. It worked very well so I dont see it would be an issue with bikes and tents. Have a great trip!!!
So much Irish culture can be found in Newfoundland, kitchen kaley or kitchen party, is actually an Irish thing that was brought to Newfoundland

I cant vouch for the flipper sandwich since I didn't try it, but you won't be disappointed if you go. It is a beautiful province and you'll find the Newfoundlanders are some of the nicest people on the planet, just check out this comment section, lol :)

@@joakimnorrby I've been here for 26 years and have not seen it all. I've motorcycled and camped most of it, but still some elusive areas. The trip to L'Anse aux Meadows and the Viking settlement is well worth the drive.

They are awesome, apparently there are places in NS where you can see them too. Maybe make a camping trip out of it?

Lot's of puffins on the Bird Islands which are near the beautiful town of Witless Just a half hour drive from St.John's Nl.

Pretty much identical to the West Coast of Ireland, especially Mayo and Galway.
Heard so many great things about the west coast of Ireland, hope to go there someday. Also Irish tend to be super friendly in my experience
You traveled to Newfoundland , and didn't go to Lance Aux Meadows , or to the 2 french islands of St Pierre and Miquelon ? what's wrong with you ? LOL
Fair point, lol. We had plans on going to Lance Aux Meadows (even going across to Labrador) but we lost so much time when our vehicle broke down. I actually asked a couple of locals about going to St Pierre and Miquelon but they all said the drive there wasn't worth it since its a long road leading down with not much happening and we'd be better off visiting the northern part of Newfoundland. But alas, next time! :)

St. John’s is a small town? There’s actually 120,000 that live in the city. A lot more in surrounding areas
Yeah it was a mistake calling it a town. I compared it to other cities in Canada and I should have made that more clear. You're right, my bad!
Gros Morne is must visit, so is bell island and the mines. dildo is heavily overrated. Splash n putt is the only big amusement park on the island. Coming from a Native. Other than that, you're literally on a big rock in the middle of the ocean, so expect winds, fog, and on and off rain in some areas
Bell Island is so majestic, its a pity I missed that one. Gives me another reason to come back. For a Swede, the amount of fog is in itself an experience, lol
You have to drive through my family town in order to get to the fogo island ferry.
It's a nice part of the world, those small communities are very cozy

That's a great question I don't have an answer to, but I think there must be several trails, especially on the west coast where you have lots of mountains. Have a great trip if you decide to go!

Hi Mohammed, I would recommend going in July like we did. The weather is great and not too humid and perfect for doing trails and provincial parks :)

If you have the time, absolutely. I think flying in to St. John's (which is the cheapest airport to get to) and then making your way west is a great way to experience the province.

I know that parts of Newfoundland get quite a bit of snow, so you'll get a totally different experience then for sure :) heard great things about the skiing experience in the province!
I've seen billions of puffins
They seem to be frequent in many places around NL, I was just unlucky with the strong winds that day I think.

I googled and it said there were at least 14 stations from st John's to Port aux Basque. That was from 2021 so I bet there are more today :) hope you'll enjoy NL, we sure did!

I have food allergies and can't eat at restaurants, I only eat unprocessed meat on the carnivore diet but not fish, do they happen to have a grocery stores. I can't have cooking oils or additives hence why I can't eat at restaurants.

We have every kind of grocery store you could want. Halal, Chinese, Vegan, local meats, veg and fruit, you name it. Nobody will starve in Newfoundland.
Sometimes you can see Icebergs in Twillingate

Yeah I thought so too and every other Canadian I've met pronounces the s as well, although I understand the name is French originally :)
Newfoundland is quite the treasure. No bells and whistles. Plan on slowing down, just a wee bit.

I love Newfoundland and the people there. Their sense of humor is amazing. Look at name of some of their towns, Dildo, Come by Chance, Spread Eagle, Mistaken Point. Are you kidding? Where else but Newfoundland one can find those names. Super friendly place. Just remember 9/11.
I agree they have a way with words, we found a lot of great story tellers when we were there too. Maybe it's a part of the Irish legacy :)
