A Canadian soldier challenged me to visit his homeland, Newfoundland. I took him up on it. Walked into his parent's house, where in the kitchen sat his old man, and his mom, and that young officer. His father was in WW2. Artillery man. Showed me all his medals. Two brown bottles sat on the table and when I sat down his father uncorked both bottles of rum. Home brewed rum mind you, and we had to cut it with water 50/50 (on advice of the son). I don't remember most of the rest of the trip but I came away with a deep respect for the land, and the people of Newfoundland. Fell in love with the place. My liver, not so much.

I lived in Newfoundland (a Brit) for nine years, 2003-2012, and loved every minute of it. It is one of the most unspoilt and naturally beautiful places I have ever been. The people are the friendliest I have ever met, and are so caring and helpful to ‘come-from-always’ .
Glad you got to visit and photograph Newfoundland, Gavin. What a place. 👍

As a Newfoundlander, we were raised to love another as we would want to be treated and we were taught the value of helping our neighbors and if we continue to do that we would always hold what we value most and that is our respect. We learned to laugh at ourselves before we can laugh at others. I am proud of where I came from and it served me well as I lived in other provinces when I left home to find work and always carried my values with me. I would never walk into a store without holding the door for the ones behind me. I am back home after getting married and wanting to come home to give them the comfort of going to bed and walking the trails and having the feeling of being safe and secured. Thank you for this video. I love this rock and that is where I will live the rest of my life like so many others who have left, but came home for the love and the beauty of what so many takes for granted.

It was like this growing up for me but I don't know if it was the area and the Catholic side but I was limited on who I could hang around with. Many pretended to like each other until out of sight. I remember my nan peeking out the window looking at what the neighbour was doing to judge them and tell Pop and then to their face, best kind lol. It is getting a bit lost on society here but in a good way at time since most are accepting while growing up now. The come from away-ers though in my old town, if an immigrant, were gawked at and there was racism if they were to move there. Most were doctors. The immigrants were the ones I wanted to have around to learn from and dated one of the very few in my town. I'm on the Avalon now. Immigrants are the norm and I love it, I love multiculturalism.

@@BrendaPenton Yes, I am also on the Avalon but I grew up in the town of Massey Drive just outside of Corner Brook. I went to school there and in elementary school I do remember the fights with the Anglicans from my Catholic school, but all my friends as I grew up and able to be outside on my own were Anglican. Now we all live in harmony and it was just kids doing what the others did. Nice to meet you. what part of the rock are you from?

It is interesting knowing and understanding some of Newfoundland's story and connections with North Sydney & Sydney Cape Breton Island Canada. Yes, Newfoundland has had a long relationship with Canada! For many years before Newfoundland joined Canada in 1949 Newfoundlanders took the Newfie Bullet to join the SS Bruce for a voyage across the Cabot Strait to North Sydney Cape Breton in time for Canada's Dominion Day Celebrations. The SS Bruce was the first vessel of the Alphabet Fleet and a lovely ship to the mainland of Canada. So, for the folks who wonder why Newfoundland joined Canada perhaps we have deeper connections and a deeper relationship than some neo revisionists think? Also, in winter and evenings all year 590AM and 570 AM VOCM can be clearly listened to in Sydney Metro, Nova Scotia. Their talk show is rebroadcast during evening hours, with a wonderful host who is even tempered and so much fun to listen to. A guy who sounds like he loves both Newfoundland & Canada.

We love our island! We only joined Canada in 1949. prior to that we were a British dominion. Our island has deep roots to the English, Irish, Scottish and French as well as multiple Indigenous groups that all play a hand in our history, our many dialects and our modern day culture! The rugged coastline is always photo/video worthy.
Bottle Cove is the best place to go for sunsets and boil ups (campfires with a pot of water and seafood) on the beach. The small trees in Bottle Cover are known as tuckamore trees. You took the trail in Bottle Cove called "Trails End", if you had have continued to the right and not the left, you would have come across some of the most beautiful scenery!
That was certainly Moose poop, but they are more inclined to avoid you than attack you.
There are many reasons why our roads are terrible, the main reasons are simply the geography and climate.
You went from Bottle Cove on the eest coast to Chance Cove at the beginning of the Avalon Peninsula and didn't share any footage of the trip across the island? Did you make it up to Gros Morne? I would love to know more about your journey here. If you ever come back this way, message me on here or look for my socials and reach out to me, I'd love to take you both on a complementary guided tour of the west coast from Port aux Basques up to L'anse aux Meadows, a fun 3 day trip which will include visiting 2 UNESCO sites and a trip back in time to the days of the Mi'kmaq and Beothuk first peoples of the Island! I'll also get you "Screeched In" and make you both honorary Newfoundlanders!

Yes we do have bears in Newfoundland. Mostly brown bears. Even the moose is not native to the island. It was brought in years ago. Yes, we do get polar bears at the odd time. Don't plan your trip on seeing one. They are rare sightings. If you wanted to see larger mountains Gros Morne was the place to go just North of Deer Lake heading up the Northern Peninsula. Less than an hours drive North. Just a bit more than half an hour before Corner Brook heading west.

We don't have brown (grizzly) bears. We have black bears, but it's rare to see one these days. Back before they closed all the municipal dumps they were easy to see/get pics.

    • @drdecker1
      @drdecker1 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@roysnow6943 I stand corrected. You can see them along rivers. My dad shot one by his cabin. He made the mistake of putting a grub box outside his cabin. While he was building it. So he got permission to shoot it because it became a nuisance and threatened people in the area.
Grizzlies are actually a subspecies of brown bear, Ursus arctos horribilis, found in dense forests, alpine meadows and mountain valleys. The principal distinctions of the grizzly are its physical appearance and diet. It takes its name from the 'grizzled' blonde-tipped fur that grows along its shoulders and back.Nov 18, 2019

I was in Newfoundland for the first time in April as I headed out there to try to get some shots of the total eclipse (got some...barely) as it looked like Newfoundland had the lowest angle on the eclipse before it headed off into the ocean. It didn't really strike me until I got there how much potential there is for landscape photographers. I probably picked one of the worst months to shoot as everything was brown and it was too early for icebergs, but I will definitely be back. I think it's an amazing spot for workshops and I hope you will do more there in the future. I shot a small fraction of what was there, and even someone like Gord Follet...who LIVES THERE...would tell you that there is so much more left to explore. Can't wait to go back, possibly in the Fall or in the early Summer to get some icebergs and puffins! What an amazing island!

OOf, that ferry ride. They moved up our departure time the week before to 7:30PM, then was delayed to almost 9PM. We rolled into Port aux Basques at 2:30AM in the pouring rain with Homewrecker winds(Wreckhouse winds, but that was the joke I'd always crack myself up with while there). At least we knew a week ahead if time so our first couple days stay was all the way over in Bonavista to maximize our time there...

It’s hard for landscape photography to compete with drone footage. This video is all the proof you need.

Great vlog and very amusing. Love the berry and barley juice references. At 3:17 you almost look like Ernie McCracken from King Pin. Sorry just hope you know who I mean?😂

Great video , the ladder , too funny , it couldn’t be fixed ? The stainless steel alone is worth it. Amanda’s keeps us laughing as usual, I knew when you shut the lights out , the next time you turned on I know Amanda would be beside you. 😂😂 is that bad ? Looking forward to this trip of yours enjoy guys.

The roads sound like the ones in the UK at the moment! I used to flit back and forth to Canada for work and sometimes the plane would land at Newfoundland to pick up and deliver mail, the landing was pretty hairy slam the plane down sharply then hang on whilst the pilot navigated the craters on the runway! Great video looking forward to seeing more!

Awesome looking place especially with the fog looks very cinematic and spooky just like out of a film. Almost a bit like Filey. I wish I had got a caravan there.😊

I've never heard Morten Hilmer even hint that a mountain or a trail was too rough or steep or that he might not make it.😁 But it has been many years since I was at the age where I was omniscient, omnipotent, and immortal. Now, if I get both feet on the floor in the morning it is an accomplishment. Take good care of yourself and Amanda, Gavin. No picture is worth killing or maiming yourself to get it.
