Hi gents. Thanks to your very early series of videos about Canada, I managed to successfully get into Canada. Spent about 12 days traveling around Nova Scotia coastline. Thanks for all the informative videos. Cheers. Kam
I live here in St.johns and I can tell you the prices for food has gone up even more now.The price for healthy food or almost any kind of food here now is crazy.
I'm a Newfoundlander living in South Korea. Haven't been home to Canada since 2019. This is helping with the homesickness. Looking forward to coming home to the rock for a rest come Spring!!
Thank you so much for this! My friend and I are moving to NL from BC in May and people kept telling us groceries were going to be a lot more expensive; according to these prices, thats not true!
Unless grown locally the produce spends two weeks in the back of a truck before it gets here so the fresh factor is long gone. Harvest season in the fall is the best time for fresh produce that is grown by Newfoundlanders and does not require long distance shipping.
@@theRTWguys no problem. Just simple geography. We are on the End of the line for shipping from anywhere west of here. Most of the produce that is shipped here (Especially farther away) is past the best before date when we buy it. Picking out the mouldy strawberries before the rest are spoiled is normal out of season when the produce has to travel across the continent and even from South America !!
I live in a small fishing village in Nova Scotia .. I tried driving the coastline taking pictures of lighthouses but I only had 3 weeks vacation ... And driving backroads some gravel some paved you don't get as far in 3 weeks as you might think you'd get .. LOL .. Soooooooo many lighthouses ..
Sounds like you had an amazing adventure exploring the beautiful coastline of Nova Scotia! It's true, there's so much to see and explore, especially when you're taking the backroads and discovering hidden gems along the way. Lighthouses are such iconic and picturesque landmarks, and Nova Scotia is certainly blessed with its fair share of them. Even though three weeks might not seem like a lot, it sounds like you made the most of your time and captured some wonderful memories. Here's to more incredible journeys and lighthouse-filled explorations in the future! 🌊🗺️📸
Everything in newfoundland has to be shipped over on a boat, that's why things are a lot more expensive, you're shopping in st johns which is the largest center, so typically its cheaper out there. The smaller communities things are a lot more expensive.
Crazy seeing Mr.Noodles at that price. Only 12 years ago in college in Newfoundland it was 20cents a bag at the bulk stores. Kraft Dinner was about 35-45cents depending on sale.
In Ontario, the Purity branded stuff is in the foreign food section! The cream crackers and Jams Jams are amazing. As others have said, food prices have sky rocketed since you made this video.
It's interesting to hear that Purity branded products have found their place in the foreign food section in Ontario! It's a testament to the diverse range of food products available and how regional specialties can sometimes become popular in different areas. And yes, you're right that food prices can change over time due to various factors. It's always a good idea to keep an eye on how prices may fluctuate and adjust your shopping habits accordingly. Thank you for sharing your experience and insights!
What surprises me every time at the register is the “bottle” tax. When my children were young I liked to have juice boxes for them …in Newfoundland they charged bottle tax on EACH juice box in the 8 pack. The price of milk KILLED me…it was a always 2/$7.00 ( sale price)….that is $7 a gallon!!!!! Interesting in Newfoundland you cannot purchase gallon of milk but only half gallons. Big milk drinker here.
I live in one of only 10 states in the USA that has bottle deposit. When buying pop and beer that can be substantial (5 cents for most states per container). But if you keep them u get the money back when recycling.
@@timcollum5015 I too live in a state with .05 cents deposit…on soda beer bottles or can. Newfoundland has it also on carton of juice, juice boxes ( size of a yogurt where 8 are in it…so adds bottle tax times 8 for the pack), there was more items that qualified than just beer/soda. I might be wrong but yogurt containers might be included too.
I live in Nova Scotia at the very southwestern tip. Love it. I lived in Newfoundland a few months back in 03. Prices in Canada are definitely higher especially in areas like Newfoundland, Labrador, the Northwest Territories or any area that is extremely rural. Everything has to be shipped in by air or truck via ferry. There are also some things you just can't get in my area of the world Nova Scotia and I never saw in Newfoundland too. I really miss Artichokes. I was brought up in Florida but adopted from here. I moved back in 08. If you're shopping in Canada on the US dollar, you really save a lot but it's tough on the Canadian dollar for sure.
It sounds like you have a deep appreciation for the beauty and uniqueness of the Canadian provinces, especially the maritime areas like Nova Scotia and Newfoundland. You're absolutely right that the cost of living can vary significantly in different regions, particularly in more remote and rural areas. The challenges of transportation and accessibility often play a big role in pricing. It's interesting how certain items can be hard to come by in certain places, reflecting the local availability and preferences. And yes, currency exchange rates can definitely impact the affordability of living and traveling in different countries. Thanks for sharing your insights and experiences with us! It's always fascinating to learn about the nuances of different regions and how they contribute to the overall culture and way of life.
newfoundland is a beautiful place to live but groceries are way more expensive then any where else cause everything has to come across water where we are on a island and the ferries arent cheap anymore either so that goes into the cost.great video guys, and love the dog he is so cute .
The booze is so expensive because of the tax! Interestingly, it makes the cost difference between bottom, middle, and (some) top shelf alcohol much smaller, so a lot more people opt for nicer stuff. Now the rent and housing are cheaper here, but we pay a lot for heat. I think it's still cheaper overall than the bigger Canadian cities.
As a ex pat of Newfoundland, now living in Saskatchewan, I can tell you correct on the tax especially on rum, the drink of all NL males. If you buy rum in Sk or ab at liquor stores inside Costco, the price is half off when compared to NL!!!
Whatever happened to "don't buy anything" lol? Great tour of the supermarket, new subscriber and I am currently backtracking your videos. Very enjoyable and relaxed watching. I love them ♥♥♥ I saw the 2L bottles of Fresca at 10:17. They were "on sale" 2/CA $4.50 YIKES! Where I am at in the States (MD), regular price is $1.25, sale is $1 for a 2L bottle.
Do you know how you compare to UK? Everything looks delicious especially the salads also, the store looks much bigger than our larger stores. The Cadbury Chocolate selection looks better. I would spend a fortune there .Just the variety I could not resist.
Have visited NL three times........going again this summer. Had forgotten the prices, but not the experiences and the sights. Best of all... the people. Can't understand them, but loads of fun.
Wow, they actually have food markets there. Who knew…. And lots of fresh food along with fruits, vegetables and frozen. I had the assumption that there wasn’t much there and people ate fish only. Amazingl👍👏🏼
It's great to see that you were pleasantly surprised by the food markets in St. John's, Newfoundland. Indeed, this city offers a diverse and thriving food scene that goes well beyond seafood. Exploring local markets can be a wonderful way to discover fresh, regional produce and culinary delights. St. John's has a lot to offer, and it's always rewarding to have our assumptions challenged in such a positive way. Enjoy your culinary adventures! 👍👏🏼
I’m watching this in 2024 so I don’t know what Newfoundland prices are today but I have to say a lot of that is much more costly here in Alberta! Those prices are better than ours in Alberta!
i live in central newfoundland and i can tell you that you actually picked one of the more expensive stores to shop at and my mum when she's given a friend of hers a lift to dominion in GFW to do her shopping that the prices in the local Botwood Foodland and Colmen's tended to be at least $1 or $2 sometimes as much as $5 cheaper than the dominion prices so i think you should look at the smaller store chains before saying Newfoundland is expensive to be buying food, also Foodland is a grocery store and i do know the local one in Botwood has a liquor section lols oh BTW the $20+ for smokes you mentioned that i think that is if you're smoking the more expensive brand names as i know that there are brands of smokes that are around $12-$13 such as the LD's lols
Thanks for this video! I haven't been home in about 4 years... living in Aus...some things from memory have insanely jumped in price...but others things are so much cheaper!! wow.... looking forward to having more nut safe snacks unlike aus. Since eating Aussie chocolate and produce I can't stomach a lot of American fruit n veg...so looks like lots of in season Canadian produce for us.

It sounds like your upcoming visit to Canada will be a great opportunity to enjoy some familiar and new treats. And enjoying the in-season Canadian produce sounds like a delicious plan! I'm sorry to hear about your brother's health and the challenges you're facing regarding the cost of living and grocery prices in your area. It can be really frustrating and overwhelming when the cost of essentials like food is significantly higher than expected. Changes in prices can often be influenced by various factors such as location, transportation costs, and local economic conditions. It's unfortunate that these circumstances can impact your ability to comfortably stay in the area you're in. If you're finding it difficult to manage the cost of living, exploring budgeting strategies and seeking out resources in your community might be helpful. Additionally, considering alternative options and destinations that offer a more affordable living situation could provide some relief. Remember that your well-being is important, and making decisions that prioritize your health, financial stability, and overall quality of life is crucial. I wish you and your brother all the best during this challenging time. If you ever need more information or advice, feel free to ask.

You bring up some really interesting points! It's fascinating how some generic or no-name brands can be produced in the same facilities as well-known brands, offering similar quality at a lower price. And your insight about tobacco prices is enlightening - knowing where to buy can make a significant difference. The Indian reservation's approach of selling directly to customers and preventing reselling seems like a clever strategy. You're absolutely right about the exchange rate and the geographical challenges of living on an island. These factors can indeed contribute to higher costs, especially when items need to be imported or transported by ferry. It's a unique perspective that highlights the intricacies of cost of living and the various factors that come into play. Thanks for sharing this valuable insight! 🛒💡🌏

Living in the city, it's gotten even worse. I could get ONE small-med bag of apples or one strawberry container for SEVEN damn bucks. The smallest lean ground beef going between 9-13 bucks, and only jumping in price with each additional LB. Or I could go to the Dollar Store and get 3 packs of instant noodles for a dollar. Wanna guess what I'm stuck eating for weeks? Thank god for the food bank. (This, not counting tax, and god smite the guy who invented the "sugar tax" on the was-cheap stuff)

At the time of filming, it was recommended, not required. But we are definitely following the health guidelines and be part of the solution 😀
Good advise
HI! Thanks so much for this informative video. Remember to wear masks in public :)
We do!
This was filmed when mask was optional in NL. But we did wear them when not in front of the camera (and nobody's around us)
When you say you're not buying anything going into a grocery store, and walk out with a cart full. 😑 🤣
Hahaha can't resist 😂
wow, I might have to stop drinking for a few weeks too.
LOL
you drop the lime, you buy it. no refunds! 😆😆
Hahaha I know 😅
I remember when KD was .25 cents a box,5 for a dollar.I refuse to buy it anymore.
Hahaha time has changed everything 🤪
Catelli is not the most popular brand of pasta in Canada. I don’t know anyone who would buy that in Toronto or the GTA. They don’t even sell that in my neighborhood. Sorry have an Italian background and can’t accept that.
LOL thank you for clarifying 😊
I thought us dollar and Canadian dollar are different?
They are different 😬
@@theRTWguys hehehehe my point exactly. So we might not know for sure if its costlier or cheaper if we don't convert it
Did he just say $3 bottle of wine 🍷 ! :O I'm Canadian that sounds insane 🤣 so cheap wtf
Yes!! Many, if not all grocery stores here have the three buck Chuck selections for bottled wine 🍷
Lol I worked at this very store years ago.
Oh wow that's a coincidence 😁
@@theRTWguys I know! 🤣 It’s great to see it again as I’m living on the mainland now (originally from Grand Falls). Great video. I’m a new subscriber!
And our minimum wage is 12.50 and to rent a small apartment is $800

@@theRTWguys yeah our government is pretty much dictators who we don't vote for no one I know , knows someone who voted for Trudeau canada is a joke Trudeau is a dictator
Loved living in St. John's, NL (lived there for 10 years), but didn't love the high prices on a lot of produce, but I totally understand the reasoning behind it.
Just watched your last 3 videos about NL, and totally missed the province (especially the Duke of Duckworth!). Subbed to your channel to watched your adventures! Have fun and safe travels! 👍👍👍
Thank you Marcus 😀

Isn't Kraft dinner just mac and cheese, or is it different?
Nah! Mac & cheese was based on Canadian Kraft Dinner. 😁
@@theRTWguys Kraft is American. So is this a divisional change for the region? Like How Breyers ice cream is Dryers once u cross the continental divide?
how expensive is Newfoundland
Me: VERRYYYYY
😭
Yeap
These are Los Angeles prices. Actually some are cheaper the LA
Hahaha no way!! 😂
@@theRTWguys I live here and right now it’s yes way. How can you tell me no way when you don’t live in my neighborhood or pay for my groceries. You’re ignorant
Sure we pay more for beer and liquor but that is because of taxes. When we go for heart surgery it is free,Americans will pay $100,000.End of story!
True story 🙂
Your medical treatment comes from the years of taxes paid in the system... By the way you might have to wait quite a while....

Don't buy pricey items.. Buy what's in season... Forget package foods'...just a recommendation
please shop electronic items too.

hahahaha! $80 for a turkey? I can get a 20 pound bird that theres no way in hell we will eat all in a month for $20 in America.
Very true!
The prices for food now are gone over the hill now in St.johns newfoundland I tell y it's ridiculous of the price of food's today ( year,2024) I tell you now that people who are living in st johns are going to be giving more money than we are getting now.
Smoking drinking and driving in Newfoundland only people working in Alberta can afford.
True 😂
I like your videos but please, wear your mask. If nothing else, a courtesy to wherever you are visiting.
This was filmed in September 2021, and at that time, mask was not required in NL.
I'm broke just watching this haha jk. The quality tho looks pretty good!
Hahaha - yes and yes, the choices are very reasonable!
OMG ..............
