I always wondered why the tune is titled "African". Not that I know well about the continent, but the recording from Tales from Hudson didn't sound African to me at all. Now I listen to his solo, I think I get a better sense of what he means by the title. Thanks for posting! And, thanks Michael RIP.
I agree with your opinion about that recording, and I'd recommend giving the original Brecker Brothers recording a listen (from Out of the Loop). It reflects quite a bit more of its title in its groove.
I came across with the album after I wrote above comment and I kept nodding while I was listening to it. I love the orchestration as well as this solo.
Please listen the Marc Beacco release in Tomato Soup Album, a jazz vocal track with M. Brecker as sax sideman. You will undestand the African mood of this marvelous track, African Skies. Enjoy !
Definition of 'Virtuoso' demonstrated right here.
Thank you Michael Brecker for showing what is possible.
Aside from the tremendous sax playing, I can hear him drumming in his head along with this solo.
What a wonderful piece of music. Michael Brecker was unbeliavable!!!
Most Impressive saxplayer ever.
The album track is absolutely amazing.
Marcos, thanks for posting! Thanks Michael! RIP
A giant playground, all in one saxophone!
His tone and phrasing are unique. Some have tried to imitate it, but he will always peak out from hundreds of others.
Amazing! So dynamic and expressive! A true musical genius! Thanks for all the music! RIP
Picasso Dali Magrid and more expressed true art in one wonderful music piece Brecker infinite genius
.... this weeps my heart...
Man, what a bad ass.
Grande Michael, hai lasciato un vuoto enorme!
Great! Thanks for posting!
R.I.P., Breck

A Lenda!
Is there a recording of this concert?

The lick 2:06
Beautiful. If you like this, check out Chris Potter playing Cherokee.
Wiping the spit off his hand at 3:55 ?
nah, he did a fluff!
Yeah that was a goof, but I enjoyed the heck out of it.
Either explanation is possible.
Maybe a cramp in his fingers?
このようなソロ演奏を、すべてのサックス🎷奏者にやって欲しい。
