A major figure in contemporary instrumental music, tenor saxophonist and composer Michael Brecker is an eight-time Grammy-winner, and the first to win both the "Best Jazz Instrumental Performance" and "Best Jazz Instrumental Solo" two years in a row.
As a result of his stylistic and harmonic innovations, Brecker is among the most studied instrumentalists in music schools throughout the world today.
Most recently, Brecker has released his seventh solo album, Nearness of You: The Ballad Book, featuring a dream ensemble of fellow jazz giants: Pat Metheny, Herbie Hancock, Charlie Haden and Jack DeJohnette. The album is produced by Pat Metheny, with legendary singer-songwriter James Taylor adding his voice to the peerless musical alchemy on two tracks.
Born into a musical household in 1949, Brecker's father played records by Dave Brubeck and Clifford Brown and took Michael and his older brother Randy to see Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, Duke Ellington, and many other jazz icons. While Randy took up trumpet, Michael launched his studies on clarinet and alto sax; moved by the genius of Coltrane, Brecker switched to tenor in high school. After studying, as did his brother, at the University of Indiana, he made the mandatory move to New York City, landing work with several bands before co-founding the pioneering jazz-rock group Dreams in 1970. In 1973, Brecker joined his brother in the frontline of pianist/composer Horace Silver's quintet. The following year, the siblings branched off to form the Brecker Brothers, one of the most innovative and successful jazz-funk fusion bands of the decade. Michael and Randy also operated the popular downtown Manhattan jazz club Seventh Avenue South. Jam sessions with keyboardist/vibes player Mike Maineiri, bassist Eddie Gomez, and drummer Steve Gadd led to the 1979 formation of Steps Ahead. With Peter Erskine later replacing Gadd, the all-star quartet recorded seven albums and ascended to worldwide fame during the 1980s.
Brecker has recorded and performed with a virtual Who's Who of jazz and pop giants in the 70s and 80s, including Chet Baker, George Benson, Dave Brubeck, Don Cherry, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Freddie Hubbard, Quincy Jones, Charles Mingus, Joni Mitchell, Jaco Pastorius, Frank Sinatra, Bruce Springsteen, Steely Dan, Tony Williams, and Frank Zappa, and cut his first record as a leader in 1987.
That solo debut, Michael Brecker, was voted "Jazz Album of the Year" in both Down Beat and Jazziz magazines. Its follow-up, Don't Try This At Home, garnered Brecker his first Grammy. After investigating new rhythmic concepts on 1990Õs Now You See It ... Now You Don't, and subsequently touring for a year and a half with Paul Simon, Brecker reunited with Randy for 1992's Return of the Brecker Brothers. Out of the Loop (1994) and Tales From the Hudson (1997) put additional Grammys on the saxophonist's shelf, leading to Brecker being named "Best Soloist of the Year" by JazzLife and "Jazz Man of the Year" by Swing Journal. He also bolstered his star-studded resume with appearances on Herbie Hancock's The New Standard (Verve) and McCoy Tyner's Infinity (Impulse!), followed by extensive touring with each piano titan.
His third solo album in the last four years, following 1998's Two Blocks From the Edge and 1999's Time Is of the Essence (featuring Metheny, organist Larry Goldings, and drummers Elvin Jones, Jeff "Tain" Watts and Bill Stewart), Nearness of You finds Brecker reunited with the jazz innovators who appeared on his first two dates as a leader. Metheny, DeJohnette, and Haden played on Michael Brecker, and DeJohnette, Haden, and Hancock provided the rhythm section on Don't Try This At Home. But this was the first time they all played together as a unit for an entire album. Nearness of You was produced by Metheny, marking the first time the guitarist has stepped into that role for any major jazz artist other than himself and his own group.

When you were listening to the clips, it blew your brains into jelly, so it's understandable you mixed them up. I'm surprised it's in as good an order as it is, after your face was melted off by these tasty solos.

Honestly, I love his playing, but one of my favorite things about brecker will always be just how much he looks like an accountant while doing all the crazy stuff he does
tone, phrasing, dynamics, timing, articulation, power, vocabulary...He had the lot.
He lived in the loft downstairs from my longtime drummer, Howie Wyeth on 19th st. We jammed and did gigs together. This monster genius was the sweetest cat I ever met.
Holy cow. He never ceases to amaze after decades of listening to MB. He’s now immortal.
The opening Skunk Funk solo is simply the best, especially the roaring multiphonic at 1:21 and the descending lick immediately after!
Like Bob Berg, Brecker played every solo like it was his last. Thankfully for us they did, since they left us WAY too soon.

I still find so much emotion in his craziest of lines. the sheer hard work he put into the craft is without question, but the emotion in his lines is what makes him special to me.
So sad that Michael the legend left us. He’s up there trading 4’s with Bird, Miles, Trane, Dexter and the cats.

What an absolute animal! Still sad that he passed away, because of that dreadful blood disease. Vinnie put out a message then, to donate blood, from a very specific type. If I had that type, I would have been giving it in a heartbeat. We miss you Mike. 😎😩

Seek out Brecker as part of The Atlantic Family live at Montreux 1977 on an incendiary version of Pick Up The Pieces - a building-melting solo and groove. I was fortunate enough to play with Brecker when he was guest soloist at our college jazz festival in 1986, he played w our university jazz ensemble on the first half, and Steps Ahead on the 2nd half. That day he gave a clinic at our music school and a few of us rode up the elevator with him. What a soft-spoken nice guy he was...and how lucky for us in the jazz program. He is missed.
My youtube “teachers” always say to start improve with few notes “less is more or save best for last” but MB totally crushed that theory, he dives in with 120 note phrases, gets you excited from the first millisecond. Dang, what a video!

What a loss..But how much did he leave to this world? In 10, 20 years it will still be ahead. For those looking for proof of the existence of extraterrestrials, here you will find it! But this applies to many other musicians who lit the spark by indicating the way that others followed. Unfortunately there are too many useless people to do without and they live a long time. What a mystery life is. Thank you Michael for your boundless talent!

The dislikes are probably folks that feel playing fast doesn't equal good.. but I'm guessing playing fast is what Bernie considers beast mode. I've seen the same style videos on musicians like Oscar Peterson, where "beast mode" just means "fast".

I was lucky enough to see Michael Brecker 8 times. Live or not, you left out a bunch and to me these were not the Beast or the best of the man. The greatest Tenor Sax of all times,he had the best notes, a genius in how he used his God given abilities. What a loss, can you imagine what we could have been able to listen to had he lived another 30 years?, and his last album he gave everything to his his last breath. How lucky they are in Heaven to hear him play. A true gentleman with Grace.
ALL opinions are subjective. This being said, I love and miss Michael Brecker the musician.

I am so grateful to have seen MB perform on more than 10 occasions. I am a flute player, that doubled on Tenor. He was my hero. The heir to Coltrane. When he passed away, I was devastated. After his passing I started listening to a lot of Bob Berg, also a well accomplished player. Then his life ends tragically on a winter night in a car crash. I am reluctant to like another tenor player........all the ones I admire pass away tragically.
