Something like this really happened, though not as devastating. On Jan 12, 1953, a runaway train smashed into Washington, DC's Union Station as the city was getting ready for the Eisenhower inauguration. The engineer had alerted the station that the brakes had failed and the train was out of control. The train came to a stop about 15 feet from the waiting room when the concrete floor collapsed beneath it. Miraculously, no one was killed or seriously hurt. If that floor hadn't collapsed, the scenario in this movie scene could have happened for real. My dad, a native Washingtonian and living there at the time, talked about it for years. There are several videos on TH-cam showing the horrendous wreckage.
Best thing being no one was seriously hurt and because the station was going to be busy for the presidential inauguration in the next 72 hours they put a false floor over the loco and only removed it some time later.

Lover how Colin Higgins wrote this, Arthur Hiller directed, David M. Walsh recorded, and David Bretherton edited! ingenious mixture of live-action, models and undercranking. I forget what scale was used for the train engine bursting through the station was though.
@@BlacKnightRising If I were a special effects foreman, here is what my educated guess would be. Construct the station first, add the extras, and everything else including the small shops and restaurants in the station. Then the real train approaches and the extras will be instructed on how to avoid the train as it crashes into the station as I say "And action!" to the extras. Pulling wire at the back of the end of the train will be used to slow down the train as it crashes. The train itself would be the real thing - with a locomotive with the "AM Road" signage (I would be prohibited from using Amtrak as the signage), and 7 or 8 passenger train cars of roughly Pullman class attached to the locomotive. The stuntman would be the only one on the train to disengage the braking system and cut the braking cords so that the train cannot stop, and he would get out and dive onto a safety mat, and the man, just before he gets off the train, would set the train at a speed of 110 mph on cruise control before ditching the train. The foreman would also plan the distance and speed needed to crash - so probably a 5 mile lead or buffer for the train to reach maximum speed using an empty rail yard that leads to the station targeted for the crash, as well as any track or signal switches needed to target the train towards the station.
The walls targeted for the crash at the station would not be reinforced, but collapsable plaster walls - designed so when the walls are destroyed as the train impacts, the destroyed walls and its resultant debris will slow down the train's speed at the moment of "crash", but not stop it immediately.
And next thing you know.... “Attention all passengers. Due to the unfortunate crash of the Silver Streak, your ride to LA will be going to the works to have it all mended. Next train will be tomorrow at noon. Sorry for the inconvenience”.

No, it wasn't. The locomotive was a full-sized mock-up shell of tube roll bars and steel skin. It was mounted on a 1927 Mac flatbed truck owned by 20th Century Fox and driven at speed like a fast parade float through the sets. The entrance to the inner concourse's archway had explosive or air charges in the walls to make the shattering look more spectacular. The hard walls and pillars were made of ultra-light plaster and the mirror was REAL glass (I cut my finger on it). It was shot across two hangars at Burbank Airport dressed to look like the archway and foreground area. The rest of Toronto Union Station was matted-in at Van der Veer Photo Effects in Burbank. The shot had at least 7 cameras rolling across two separate takes (first set with locomotive clean, second set with locomotive distressed and smiling). The scene cost $500,000 of a $6 million budget.

The fact that this actually happened in real life is crazy

Damm... those are some impressive practical FX right there. Very well done. Love the exploding wall 1:01... real old school work.

@Da_FNAF_Gamer thats why he said "Practical fx" it isnt cgi it is an actual effect composited into the movie
Kool-Aid man when he sees a wall
According to stunt coordinator Mickey Gilbert that was a truck dressed up to look like a train. The stunt driver could not see through the front but the left side of the 'train' was empty and upon reaching a certain point the stuntman applied the brakes.
I'd love to have that immaculate X-1-9 car.
Tengo 50 años y Esa pelicula la vi cuando era muy chico ! Muy buena ! Gracias !
Mi placer. Lo bueno de esto es que no tiene CGI.
2:03 look how everyone gathers round to see the wreckage of the train after it crashed into a buffer stop and into the concourse
Good thing the Fiat X1/9 survived
Loved that car and the color combo. The rubber end caps con the bumpers for 77 model year help integrate the mumpers better than the 75 76 models....74 was the best looking year
How much money does Grover payed for the car? I still watched this video.
1:30 that one yellow car is scared too

@Pia Yup when GG1 4876 became a runaway after a design flaw in the New Haven coaches caused an angle cock valve to close cutting off most of the air supply for the brakes.
Poor Toronto Union Station 😅 Good old CP RAIL #4070.. The "Star" of the scene
THAT WAS SO AWESOME AT 0:35 LIKE PEOPLE ARE GOING “UH OH RUNAWAY TRAIN ABOUT TO CRASH THROUGH THE STATION! INCOMING!”
A very similar accident occurred in Australia with the same class of locomotive
They don’t have FP units in Australia
Narrator: luckily no one was hurt
Only in the 70s!!! 😂😂 Great movie!!
This happened to be the best scene 🎬 from the movie 🍿! How there was no driver involved to get into the diesel car to stop the train in time before it crashed through the station at 0:35 before finally stopped at 1:30! This also had a crossover with Thomas & Friends episode where James the Red Engine was moving without a driver, caused Edward the Blue Engine to place a rope on James’ buffer in order to slow him down before finally stopping at the station! Glad my brother wrote the review about this movie on IMDb! Even though it’s all acting and it wasn’t real, as it’s a work of fiction, it would be way horrifying if this happened IRL! I give this ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ five stars for the best scene ever from Silver Streak! ^^
*" No buildings were harmed in the making of this film "*
Wish there was some kind of “making of train crash” video out there. Always wanted to know how they did this scene
Sir Topham Hatt was not pleased. "You have caused confusion and delay!" He said.
Silver Streak responded. “Tell that to Roger Devereau. I heard he had to quit while he was a-head of himself”.
1:30 not even the car wanted to get hurt
It's a FIAT X1/9. Lovely little baby Ferraris. I used to drive one.
WHOA 🤯 THAT WAS SO GOOD AND AWESOME 😎 THAT DIESEL TRAIN CAR CRASHED THROUGH THE STATION BEFORE FINALLY STOPPED! MY FAVORITE 🤩 CLIP OF THIS MOVIE!!! 0:35 to 1:35! 👏🏻
Lover how Colin Higgins wrote this, Arthur Hiller directed, David M. Walsh recorded, and David Bretherton edited! ingenious mixture of live-action, models and undercranking. I forget what scale was used for the train engine bursting through the station was though.
I'm watching that classic right now 11-26-21
That train really said it’s time to go shopping😌
Best part of this whole thing is the unusually tall guy galloping to safety after he waited for the yellow car to pass. @1:32 😆 🤣 😂

What?
Yes that police and lady
@@reallyboredalpaca3077 No one got hit.

Damn. I made that comment 3 years ago. Time flies
This brings back memories of Pennsylvania 1953 ☠️
How did they pull that off, so real looking especially for the 70s
back when they built realistic sets, and attention to detail to make it as realistic as possible, something CGI can't come close to even today
@@charlessmith263 way too complicated and dangerous and expensive. Just put a mock up shell over a truck and drive it through the set.
@@Ham549You're right. I read somewhere that that was how they did it.

@@GTAMadMan144 No it did not!!!!! Well, the train brakes stopped working, and one of the stop brakes yanked off, and the emergency brake on the train broke, and it suddenly turned into a runaway train. This is the new Generation of thomas comes to breakfast.
I like the sound of that. After all, Silver Streak came out in theatres on December 8th, 1976. Thomas Comes to Breakfast was released on tv on March 26th, 1989 with the voice of Ringo Starr.

Apart from Blazing Saddles and Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, this was Gene Wilder's best movie.
Don't forget lady in red 😘
Add Young Frankenstein and the list is good 😊
Look how everyone is making a run for it when the security guard is trying to get them out of the station because of the runaway train
And the best part is, this was a real crash, almost around 2.3 million in repairs
Dollars? That much money to repair after this?
