There's a real cool story about one of Merle's last concerts. Toby was there and Merle was failing, and he wasn't sure how long he could make it on stage. Toby told him he'd help out. Merle asked him how many of his songs he knew and Toby said, "Hell Merle, I know 'em all!" He ended up finishing the show for him.
Losing Toby was sudden and hard to take ..We worked the same oil fields at the same time in west Oklahoma ..we never met in those days but we sure chewed the same dirt at the same time ..Miss you boss
When you mentioned "west Oklahoma" I had to think for a bit to remember working there back in 1981. Guymon area. April. Thought I was going to see my first tornado (coming from Canada). A fairly dry and desolate place. Friendly people though. Oklahoma has brought us so many great entertainers!
I made as far west as Laverne Oklahoma and was about 60 miles away from you in ,81. Oklahoma has produced some great artists . Leon Russell , Garth and Toby .. Reba Mcentire used to be a waitress and served my dad back in the day . Ronnie Dunn and Roy Clark lived near me and I did meet Ronnie just before he left for Nashville ...many , many others from our state @@chrisbenoit129
Looking back, I'm thinkin "live like you were dyin" Tim McGraw song (idk who wrote it) is about Toby Keith. That's based on nothing at all, just sayin. Also you and I might've choked on the same dust. I lived in Boise City "at the turn of the century" and Amarillo since '05. Drove a flatbed over the road, probably delivered a million miles of drilling pipe and sacks of 'mud' from MT and ND to TX and LA (seen one or two oilfields)
My 21 year old son loves this song... This song will NEVER DIE. Willie and Merle are legends and the addition of Toby in this song up'd the song! 3 COUNTRY LEGENDS!!!
Merle could have been! But in the song there is the higghwayman, the sailor, the dam builder and the astronaut... There should have been a fifth verse!
Oh someone else was on the stage with Merle and Willie ? Between Merle making that Fender ring and Willie making Trigger sing I didn't notice anyone else..

WOW!!! Do you complaining people want some "cheese with your whine". Most of the musicians that I play music around are amazed at the way Willie is able to break time and rhythm with his voice and guitar and come back to where the band has kept the back beat and rhythm. I will bet you can't do it!!!!!!
No, I can't, but I don't bill myself as a singing star and charge lots of money for people to come listen to me slaughter a classic and be pitchy as hell. That guy on the right, whoever he is, was just gawd awful. If I'd been there and paid the gate, I'd have been asking for my money back.
R. McBride The guy on the right is Toby Keith......a certified super star. All three are super stars. A live show can be a bit confusing if you try to compare it with a released studio recording. The timing will always be different. Just being in the same room with these guys is worth the ticket. RIP Haggard.
I am so grateful we can still watch live performances such as these. Are they perfectly sung and played? No, but that’s the beauty of live music. Willie was picking that guitar like a boss, and Toby Keith knew he was on stage with two absolute legendary artists. That’s what made this special.
RIP Toby Kieth and Merle Haggard, this is in my top ten best songs, we still have Willie, who I dearly love!!❤️ 😢❤ My thanks to the LEGEND Townes Van Zandt for writing this pearl.
Nothing could sound any better, Waylon, Willie and Toby. I'm sure Waylon and Toby are singing up in Heaven keeping an eye on Willie. Willie's voice after all these years is pure perfection. Love them all so much.
Amen,we are beyond saddened as we lose the best of them. Country music has lost its heart. Pop music has replaced pure country! Please bring back country music!!!
To all of those who complain that the singing is off, What do you want? A live performance will always be different each time (especially if the musician isn't lip syncing) and will always be different from the studio engineered version.

RIP Townes...you suffered, for sure, and you weren't appreciated as you deserved, but by god you left us some serious music. I have Live at the Old Quarter on repeat; just Townes and his guitar, among friends... the way Townes should be heard.
Townes, lead a troubling life, died too young as a result. Kinda thought he had that James Dean philosophy, " Live fast, die young and leave a good looking corpse. " Most everyone I know appreciate , Poncho and Leafty.
Had to do what we had to do. No truer words sung in a song. Ya hear these singers for over 50 years, can't help but feel sadness when they pass. Listening on the radio heading out for dove hunting early in the mornings with all the ones that have passed away also, hard not to shed a tear or two when ya hear that music.
@davidgarbersr8085, A serious question...why do you hunt doves? More trouble to clean than a squirrel, and almost no meat. I don't understand killing something I'm not going to eat.
That was absolutely amazing and so badass and also with Toby Keith there that was so great rest in peace Toby and oh my goodness this was a superstar performance buy all three of you
Boy ol Townes wrote some great songs , this is one of his most popular. The Ballad of Ira Hayes is one of my favorite Townes song's. Merle and Willie do a fine job here , Haggard the great American poet
Just going to leave Toby out? He is a legend himself, imo the most underappreciated country artists of all time and honestly i think he is #1 on my list. The people who were there that night are so freaking lucky.
Lyrics:
Livin on the road my friend, is gonna keep you free and clean
Now you wear your skin like iron
Your breath as hard as kerosene
You weren't your momma's only boy, but her favorite one it seemed
She began to cry when you said goodbye
And sank into your dreams
Pancho was a bandit boy, his horse was fast as polished steel
He wore his gun outside his pants
For all the honest world to feel
Pancho met his match, you know, on the deserts down in Mexico
Nobody heard his dyin words, ah but that's the way it goes
All the Federales say, they could've had him any day
They only let him slip away, out of kindness, I suppose
Lefty, he can't sing the blues all night long like he used to
The dust that Pancho bit down south ended up in Lefty's mouth
The day they laid poor Pancho low, Lefty split for Ohio
Where he got the bread to go, there ain't nobody knows
All the Federales say, they could've had him any day
They only let him slip away, out of kindness I suppose
The poets tell how old Pancho fell, and Lefty's livin in cheap hotels
The desert's quiet, Cleveland's cold
And so the story ends, we're told
Pancho needs your prayers it's true, but save a few for Lefty too
He only did what he had to do, and now he's growing old
All the Federales say, they could've had him any day
They only let him go so long, out of kindness I suppose
A few gray Federales say, they could've had him any day
They only let him go so long, out of kindness I suppose

Toby Keith's smile when Merle starts to sing is priceless. He adored Merle.

There's a real cool story about one of Merle's last concerts. Toby was there and Merle was failing, and he wasn't sure how long he could make it on stage. Toby told him he'd help out. Willie probably never thought he would out live Toby.

@Toby Keith Official Chanel Ever since you started singing. I'm in Georgia.
All of the newer singers nowadays Can't even come close to the older country, Western singers.
Townes Van Zandt was one of the best songwriters ever, and one of Ft Worth's most talented sons.
Well this song anyway.
Townes, bless his heart, so sad he is gone too.
Gosh, I sure miss Toby Keith! He was such a special person!
Willie is left alone to carry the torch now.
Thank you ✌️
RIP Toby and Merle... two greats are gone. Amazing music with three great legends!!

I really enjoyed TOBY'S music it was awesome. The Lord wanted him more. RIP your battle is over.
Only Wiilie would play a guitar onstage that looks older than him.
The smile on Merle’s face when Toby hit that certain tune with his voice. So awesome to see right now
Wow. 3 great legends of country music!

Genius. Could tell Willie was motivated by Toby’s singing. R.I.P. legends. Willie slashed the guitar. Love Willie too.
