  • - Not if it has been part of your cultural and regional food system
    - It is an important source of nutrients and diet diversity
    - In developing countries like ours, cattle are an integral part of the farm and family.
    - Industrial milk and dairy should be avoided, support small farmers and cooperatives
    - If you are intolerant or don't like milk and milk products, its ok to not have them
    - but don't shift to "alternatives" like almond/ soy milk
Part 3 of the "Should I skip..." series.

The problem is not the milk itself but the way oxytocin injections are plunged into the cattle, I've witnessed myself; an even worse scene that i can't ever forget is the calves' legs being bound with ropes so that tho' they are present before their mothers i. e. the cows so the milk flow is induced, the calves' themselves cannot access it. I wonder the mother's emotional state on being unable to feed its calf for which its milk is made by Nature in the body. Don't those emotions affect the hormones seeping into the milk? And don't we as a more evolved specie have alternatives to the various nutrients present in milk?

agree! I like Rujuta's perspectives but this video doesn't highlight lactose intolerance and like you said, the hormones being injected into cows these days as everything is now commercialized.. during the earlier days , milk was purer and hence good.. the purity of everything, let alone milk is highly questionable in today's world.. I do , however agree, that if milk /milk products suit one , then they could continue using the.. however, allergies to milk are very real

Reality of Indian milk industry (yes your doodhwalas do it too):
    1. Cows/buffaloes are forcefully impregnated because only a mother gives milk and only for her child. They are forced to have kids every year and the vets do this process for a meagre Rs. 150 to Rs. 200. Shame to do this to a female. As a result if these forced constant pregnancies, her lifespan reduces from the normal 20+ years to just 5-6 years!
    2. Their children are not allowed to feed on them more than ince or twice a day. That too only so mother starts making milk and then the calf is pulled away. Male calf is left tied outside tabelas to die after which the disposal trucks pick up the carcasses. Or males are abandoned on roads or sold to slaughterhouses. All because these poor children cannot give milk.
    3. India is one of the largest exporters of beef and leather in the world. India is the largest buffalo meat producer in the world. Dairy is the backbone of all this.
    4. Watch Unholy cattle of India OR Deadly Dairy on TH-cam to understand the reality of the Indian dairy industry. Please. For these animals please watch it and learn the cost of your chai.

I have to disagree with you on this one, Rujuta. You have stretched the reality of the milk industry in India quite a bit and come up with some half truths in this video. The cultural association that you speak of that Indians have with milk has its roots in a timeline in history, where things were very, very different from today. Each household or few in a village would take care of its their milk requirement by housing a few such animals in their own backyard. The animals were treated with compassion and well taken care of. The breed of cow was also not what we breed for milk today. It is during such a time in history that even Ayurveda took life and that is why we see all good things in Ayurveda about milk and milk products. That could very well be a fact, but that was then. Cut to the current times. Things have changed 360 degrees from those idyllic times, no matter how much you or your followers fool themselves by turning a blind eye to this fact.
The milk that is delivered to your homes every day comes from milk producing 'factories' where the animals are treated in an abhorrent manner. The very animal that Hindus revere. To supply the ginormous quantifies of milk to our bursting-in-the seams population, the only way is to industrialize milk production, which due to its very nature is wrought with unethical, despicable, dangerous, and harmful practices. Considering the demand for milk by our population, there is simply no way milk can be produced ethically and still meet the demand. It is basic common sense. This is the only truth, no matter how much we try to twist it, or influencers like you pretend to be naive, confuse the viewers with half truths, and keep them from seeing the reality.
I respect the great work you are doing via your channel and thank you for it. However, I am disappointed that you did not at least state the true facts, and then leave the choice of decision to the viewer.

The video is insensitive.. Comparison like humans wear clothes use insta.. What a comparison.. Animals don't pollute air they don't harm humans.. They are not greed like us.. Our ancestors had Desi cows that gave very little milk.. They never had paneer khava ice creams.. Now in india people use ghee for everything.. More the milk more the experiments/inventions... We don't need fancy almond or oat milk.. Coconut milk finger millet milk will so the job..
Our ancestors took care of cows and🙏they wers compassionate.. Now after milking they are left on the road.. They don't care about what they eat.. They eat raw flour.. That to like aashirvad aata that is thrown. They eat lot of plastic..my blood boils wheb I get to see that everyday..
Our ancestors worshipped them.. They had a company and big place..don't know how much stress it causes when they are tied at one small place.. Food they eat on the road may not be suitable for them..to my surprise in my place the cows don't eat bananna, chikku melons.. May be they are used to other foods which are not for them..
But in villages cows happily eat the🙏fruit peals...

I never thought I could ever disagree with Rujuta on anything. So this came as a surprise. The idyllic picture of a little boy taking his cow out to graze while on his way to school in the Himalayas is a very poor representation of the ground reality of the dairy industry. The fact is, even in this beautiful vista, the cow was probably female and therefore a valuable commodity for the family.
If you've ever come across the soul shattering cries of a week-old abandoned male calf in the same beautiful Himalayan vista, I can guarantee that you would (even if only for a fleeting moment) definitely second guess your life choices. Does this happen? - Yes very much. Have I experienced it? - Yes. Have I quit dairy? - Yes. Was it difficult? - Initially yes because I was a vegetarian who survived on milk, paneer, curd and mithai. Do I regret it? - Absolutely not.
For the non-believers, if you ever have the chance to visit Himachal, there are forests around Manali replete with the carcasses of these innocent victims. There are many many such graveyards across the pristine Himalayan landscape.
Let's not even get started on how the same male calves are left to die of starvation in the "small milk farm" scenario in rural India. It gets only worse in the cities. As far as the female is concerned, she is raped over the course of her reduced lifetime just so that she can produce the elixir for healthy gut bacteria for us humans. Her children do not get their share of what is rightfully theirs and she doesn't get to even see her male progeny who are left to die in the most horrific circumstances. There are exceptions to these inhuman practices but they are few and far between.
The entire argument for supporting small farmers is valid. But this argument is more attuned to a time when the male progeny were reared up to be used for physical labour in the fields and the females for their milk producing abilities. Oxen were carefully selected to mate with the cow to ensure the best genetic makeup for the progeny - BOTH male and female. Traditional farmers also made sure that the calf was fed the mother's milk before the family used it to their advantage. The rich Indian culture of consuming milk and milk products that Rujuta refers to has its genesis in exactly this kind of cattle rearing - wholesome, inclusive, non-invasive and most importantly respectful. Sure Lord Krishna consumed butter and ghee. But how did he treat his cows?
Nothing about cattle rearing today is even remotely close to how cattle was raised in India in the past. Have you ever witnessed the way a cow is impregnated today even in the small farmer scenario? Or how many hormones and antibiotics she is pumped with just to ensure a certain level of milk production?
Rujuta has always maintained her stand against the reductionist approach to nutrition. I applaud her for it. However, reducing the entire argument for giving up dairy to just 'profits' is oversimplification at its best. This is not about alternatives to milk or California and its world dominance in almond production.
Consuming dairy is a personal choice just like consuming meat and meat products is. So let's keep the argument against dairy consumption based on facts and not an idealistic interpretation of history and culture, profit making or the east vs. west story.

You need to understand. That wasn't the topic of the video. You made a really good point my saying that, I totally agree but she was talking about farmers, like fresh milk and its products not sold in markets. You are right by saying many of them cannot be trusted. But the farmers who sell the fresh milk can. And that she said it shouldn't be avoided and it has been a part of our culture for centuries. In the case of solving, these business have power. So I think its better if we sought out fresh and unprocessed milk. So it's better than having stupid almond and soy milk, bc these are the milk that shouldn't be trusted not something that has been part of our culture.

Animal agriculture and animal grazing is the biggest reason of soil depletion. Dairy industry promotes and infact aggregates the meat industry which is THE biggest reason for green house gas emission (methane). AND methane is far more harmful than CO2 for the environment. People want to save the planet by switching off electricity and private vehicles but they can’t care to bother about meat and dairy industry which is the biggest cause of global warming, soil depletion, health hazards, water pollution and what not. It’s cruel above all.
Plus our ancestors treated cows/animals like their own family members which is not possible in today’s time (look at the general shift in lifestyle). Today cows are used for mere business, tied with a 3 meter rope that doesn’t even allow them to move freely, I don’t think this is our culture. And don’t we know how these innocent cows are stuffed with hormones and forcefully impregnated just so that they give more milk (which is not natural)!?
Plus milk is highly commercialised. If you think you are consuming pure dairy my friend, you’re highly mistaken.
A plant based diet is self sufficient and there’s replacement for almost everything. It’s not only healthy for you but also healthy for the planet.

Humans will not build their health at the cost of the baby of another of God's beautiful creatures. When humans see the mother's hind legs tied at the time of milking and the male calf deprived of its food, I'm sure humans will feel for the poor baby and quit milk! I don't know if milk is good for my health or not but I'm not willing to acquire nutrition at the cost a beautiful male calf. Please everyone think about it. New born male calves are abandoned on the roads by small dairies and even if people like me carry them to a gaushala they die without the mother. Very very sad! First of all, Leaving dairy is not a matter of Dieting or weight loss!
Secondly, if you want to see the Reality go to any dairy man..ask him where does a male calf go..where does the old cows go?
Logically, they also don't have space and time to take care of them, it's a business..they want money.
1% of the people would be keeping them..or else its impossible to add one more cow to your house every year.
Crores of cows and buffaloes are slaughtered. 2 lakhs buffaloes per day!
Why is the calf tied away from their mother when their is "extra milk"
Why does the calfs in rescue centers don't get sick when the drink all the milk.
Why do they dairy farmers artificially inseminate the cow even before she stops producing milk.
A cow releases hormones harmful for us, she is stressed when the calf is seperated.
Also 2 out 3 people are drinking adulterated milk.
Dairy products aren't sustainable, it takes a lot of resources than a direct plant based milk.
If you can't stop, atleast limit to what you say is so called nutritious (in today's time, when cows are eating plastic from bins)
Have seen people mixing dirtiest water in milk..in my VILLAGE forget cities.
Avoid all the processed products atleast, leave the cow and the calf alone ..don't do that for the sake of taste.

This is right only in villages. I live in Bangalore and cows roam around in the city , eat grabage waste and owners don't even bother. I have rescued a cow who was suffering from vaginal tumor and when requested the owner to send her for treatment he denied and threatened us. He said he earns from her milk and he is not ready to send her for treatment. Sad part is she is bleeding and he is still milking her and making money. The number is growing and it will keep growing if concerned individuals will show interest. We have always been a cow centric culture. Gaumata isn’t just a tag the cow has been carrying for thousands of years. It is sad that things are drastically different now. But the onus is on us to change the course of the things. Let’s start by understanding the rules of running a traditional Gaushala and how much milk is to be taken from a cow.

Rujuta you missed an imptnt point. In the west there is availability of A1 milk from Jersey HF cows only. A1 milk creates a lot of issues in the gut n body. That's why these folks are lactose intolerant. And hence these the fear of dairy and therefore drive to be Vegan. It's the cows that are not right hence milk is not right. Cows in India are indegenous traditional Indian breeds like Gir Sahiwal Tharparkar Rathi etc. Our cows have a hump which activated the Surya Ketu Nadi under sun exposure and milk from these cows is called Amrit the elixir of life. This milk is called A2 milk by the "milk lobby". It is this milk that actually builds ur body. Curd n ghee from this milk alone has the multifold benefits. So we Indians are sitting on a goldmine of our own culture. The western lobby has promoted lactose intolerance. But A2 milk does not give you lactose intolerance nor bloating, nor acidity nor indigestion. We need to combat the western lobby. Our farmers shud be brought back to rearing Desi traditional Indian cows and not Jersey or HF breeds. They breed HF cause of high output from the cow... When actually that milk is dangerous for our bodies. Since thousands of years our Bharat had only Desi cow and ghee from our Desi cow made in the right traditional method was Amrit and this ghee therefore was used in Yagya and has a place of importance in all religious spiritual practices. It's not just any ghee. So please speak up against this deliberate fake propaganda lobby. This lobby wants to sell plant based Almond milk hence has painted all dairy products with a single brush stroke. All A2 milk - Cow, buffalo, goat, camel - is extremely good for you. Go ahead India, go ahead drink milk

  • @geetikalohani7410
    @geetikalohani7410 ปีที่แล้ว

U haven't talked about the basic issue that we don't even Need Milk esp after the age of 7years for our well being. It's too complex for our system to digest. Even Ayurveda suggests to reduce milk consumption as we age. If milk was so good then why is such a huge percentage of Indian population calcium deficient and suffering from bone related issues like osteoporosis..
Every mother produces milk for it's own baby. Just because animals don't wear clothes it doesn't justify us stealing away a child's nourishment. I have seen with my own eyes how calves are denied their mother's milk.
What about the forced sex or why mince words here. In dairy industry there is a section called Rape Section. Yes! A female cow's body is exploited by keeping her continuously pregnant all her life until she gives up and then mostly she is left on the streets where she mostly gets killed! That's out love for our cattle??!! We say Gaay humari maata hai. Would u do that to ur mother or to her child?? In our traditional household milk was consumed only in moderation by individual families with natural breeding and care for the child. But now that's not sustainable for the farmers and the Dairy "Industry" (very apt word) has definitely ripped that delicate balance! And the fact is that most of our current milk consumption is from commercially produced milk. And now we are just greedy coz we need endless no of milk products butter, cheese etc etc.
By the way veganism is not a "new trend". It's been around for more than 40-50 years it's just gained more limelight lately. When u call something that comes from a place of compassion simply a "trend" that just shows ur own lack of understanding.. An endless no of athletes and sportspersons have gained immense health benefits by switching to veganism. Serena Williams, Mike Tyson, Virat Kohli etc And it's a total myth that u become weak if u leave dairy. In fact u stay away from the dirty artificially injected hormones by staying away from dairy. Most of the Asian cultures have no or very less milk consumption and interestingly they have the least no of bone health issues.
One can have milk in form of curd or ghee (in moderation) (as it's more digestible) only if it's from a Desi gaai and made in a way that the cow isn't forced to become pregnant or the calf isn't denied her milk. But honestly how practical is this I wonder?
And it's not that we all need to stick to California Almond Milk just to follow a dieting fad. U can make coconut milk or any other plant based milk at home. It's costs almost the same or just but more than milk. Instead of buying expensive A-2 Milk (whose ethicality is always difficult to check) one can simply make a cheaper plant based milk at home. Coz let's face it neither expensive packaged plant based milk nor the A-2 milk is cost effective for the masses.
All in all I feel we should be aware of our choices and it's ecological and emotional impact on our community as a whole. Veganism is NOT a Trend, it's an intention to live in more synch with all beings. Yes it does come with it's own set of challenges but ur well intentioned choices and most importantly ur genuine compassion for all is what guides u through that.
Life is not black or white so let's not villianize Dairy or Veganism. They both have their history, context and current reality. It's important to look at as is...

Hello Ma'am ! I always looked up to you. But, I beg to differ here. I have seen with my own eyes, how gwallas inject hormonal injections (if though its an illegal practise), when I see the cow jumping in pain. I have seen how the calves are snatched and separated from their moms. These sights are very painful to watch. I don't consume milk from gwallas only because it reminds me of this sight. Even though, I am really unsure that the local milk brands like Sudha, Nandini, etc. or national ones like Amul don't indulge in such practices. I completely stand by your saying of not consuming store bought plant milks, although, I feel they can be made at home, but obviously can never replace the original milk. I just wished the world was a better place with more love and care for other beings than just humans.

My life changed for the better only after stopping diary fully after my kid was diagnosed with milk allergy while being breastfed. I generally like your videos, but somwhow you skipped about the research where mostly only europeans have the gene to have milk after being an adult. So all kids must try to have milk, because they can actually digest it, but adults can often not actually digest it. But ghee and yogurts are better options as they have low lactose. Also, we have been pushed to drink milk because of white revolution, our grandmothers never drank 2 glasses of milk everyday as well. Same in the west, milk was pushed in US by dairy industry and cereal industry. Even in ayurveda milk is heavy and replaces an entire meal, but we have it like its nothing.

As you all say how the cattles are being treated as the loving family members, no wonder the no.of abandoned loving cows are increasing on the roadside eating trash and all the gaushalas all over the country are overcrowded with the old non-productive cows, and how come we are never able to find any buffalos on the roads or any old aged buffalo with any cattle farmer in their houses as other human family members are seen. Are you being paid by the so called ethical dairy industry for spreading the misinformation? I always thought you make sense in your videos until now. Purity of a food products is the big question today which you have skipped ?
Hormones injected to animals n preservatives n additives in food cause harm to all.l think real way to go today is to source it from real genuine places where these harmful method are not used .we must all encourage organic practices .big companies keep their cows indoors n not allow them to graz freely . Having these products in small quantity can also reduce the load on the animals . because when they are producing it in large amounts with use of hormones .so as to meet the human requirements.l think taking this step of encouraging organic methods which is our ancient methods should help control all malpractices by big companies .no harm in having almond or coconut milk .one can prepare them fresh at home in small amount. This way we can create a balance which will be sustainable.
