    Rain can really put a guy into the slough of despond no doubt! I like to carry the Silky Saw Katanaboy 500. Takes up almost no room, no gas or oil and I've cut though fallen trees on the trail over 18" in diameter in just a few minutes. Amazing Japanese steel and only cuts on the PULL cut. Feel like a Samurai when I'm wielding one of those lol.

    I know this is a bit of an old video now.... but PLEASE don't let the kids or yourself or anybody stand between the truck and the thing you are pulling/pulling from. OR on the other side. Just think of where the strap, shackle, or piece of tree may spray if anything breaks.
    I noticed on the 2nd big tree you were pulling out the kids were standing near the tree or between the tree and the truck even up on the hill and the kid standing on the trail opposite the direction of pull (Far side of the tree).
    When things break they break in a BIG way and leave huge dents in steel body panels and shackles have been known to kill people when they fail.

    Awesome stuff! We actually stopped at the big clearing with all the rocks, tray mtn junction for viewing the solar eclipse. It was a magnificent area.
    Also, if you go down and turn right from the way you came and go down about 5 miles, there's a trail head and large clearing for an awesome camping spot right by the creek.

    Loving your channel. The music, the content, editing, etc. all very cool. Probably goes without saying at this point, but, pick your weather. Some weather is better for staying home and doing other things. Finally, I think you made the right call in going home. You have nothing to prove. This is about fun. Don't run the risk of souring the kids on overlanding. There will always be another sunny weekend to pick it back up. Looking forward to your next installment!

    With a big truck and trailer, there's no reason not to have appropriate rain gear packed. There's no such thing as bad weather, just bad planning.

    I am a fan of your adventures and when I saw you struggling with that second tree, a small 12-volt reciprocating saw would have made it fun and easier for you to keep on trucking. I know Your 4Runner has a 12v outlet to help you charge them like I do. Can't wait to see your next adventure.

    With a winch you can use a snatch block off of a tree to the side, and pull downed trees out of your way with minimal physical effort.

    Black and Decker makes a great 40V lithium ion battery-powered chainsaw that's perfect for road trips. Best part, no gas smell.

    • @TheKPDX
      @TheKPDX 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      How about the 20V, 10" model? Is that any good? It's only $82 with battery as opposed to $162 for the 40V 12" model. I stopped carrying a full size chain saw long ago. I've been thinking about the Silky Katana Boy as an alternative but it's $170

  • @larryboothby3687
    @larryboothby3687 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Stihl Wood Boss. That’s your saw. Get the case to go with it, and you can strap it to the roof with a Blue Ridge Overland Chainsaw bra. The saw has a powerful engine and a long enough bar to make short work of downed trees. Based on my experience paddling whitewater in the southeast, you will see lots of downed trees. Make sure you learn how to use a powerful saw though. That thing will hurt you bad, if you do it wrong.

    its funny how we watch this after getting experience and then laugh as we are pulling in reverse and how bad that is on the transmission and if we just hooked up from the rear we could have pulled that tree right out og the trail

    Rather than pulling straight back on the tree after you cut it, think in terms of pulleys. One end on the tree, go around around a standing tree in the direction you want to move it and the other end to the vehicle. Armchair overlanding here, you may have tried that.

  • @getlostbrandon

    love your video work. tips from a kayaker regarding the water spots on your GoPro. just lick the lens before mounting, preferably dip it in some water afterwards. Should buy you an hour with a lot less water spots. That and a better pruning saw + axe or hatchet. I use a $20 corona Razor tooth 10 inch folding saw, its 1/3rd the price of a comparable Silky "Big Boy", i usually turn a 8 inch logs into firewood, takes about 10 seconds per cut, i carry a fiskars axe with me in case a serious log gets in my way. being from oregon, a serious log can be a 10 foot thick douglas fir... i hope that doesnt happen

    • @getlostbrandon
      @getlostbrandon 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      oh and try some wool or fleece in the rain. wool retains heat when wet, and fleece just doesnt even absorb water, takes care of the whole being wet problem.

      @TheKPDX 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    If you don't want to carry a chainsaw here in the southeast, get a Silky Bigboy 2000 and a good axe. Learn to use both, and take safety gear. Still requires sweat, but will do the job on anything a non-practiced person would want to handle with a chainsaw.

    The traveling is great, but just can't watch anymore in that you copy off Casey Neistat so much. It's just "TOO" much. I wish you'd develop you're own style of editing!!! Why can't you just make it you're own way. Stop this 'fake it till you make it' crap.

    • @SwellRunner
      @SwellRunner  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I see you’re a prolific content creator so you know how easy and fast it is to just copy others instead of relying on your own true creativity. I only have 30 minutes to edit these movies so I have to copy others. Otherwise it would take me hours to edit!
