muddy hill + pulling trailer = I LOST - the Georgia Traverse one last time

  • Ok, so I got in one last trip before we moved to Park City Utah - I was fortunate enough to spend TWO nights on a wet, muddy, GREEN Georgia Traverse. I ventured completely off the mapped trail and found myself in quite a predicament with the trailer. Getting that thing up a steep muddy, tight hill was... interesting. We're all ok though.

    Great video. This is tough. Seems the trailer became a crutch. This is the type of exploring that needs either a buddy or big cajones....I mean, you had a winch :) I doubt many people do serious remote off roading solo even with many years of experience.

    For towing a trailer, you need to cross your chains over more than once to take up the slack. If you hitch fall out or your ball happens to break, that trailer tongue is going into the ground hard.

    Good call turning around. It's good to now when to call it a day. You KNEW you could turn around there, but not up the trail. It's definitely better to err on the side of caution when wheeling solo. Was that like a 32-point turn you ended up making? lol RE those deflators - I tried to order a set of those from a 4X4 shop years back when I had my Jeep. The guy told me not to bother, they were more trouble than they're worth as they were tough to calibrate and KEEP calibrated. He recommend another type of deflator, which was basically a hose that fit on the valve stem, with a release button on the other end an an inline gauge in between. You have to do 1 at a time, but at least it' accurate.

    Another great video. Smart decision on the muddy hill, you can see that your all-terrain tires were packed solid with mud, essentially turning them into slicks. I have no doubt that with the winch and some patience you could have the hill if you needed to. But no shame in heading back down this time.

    Knowing when to turn around is actually the most critical skill you can develop. Like you said, accomplishment is all a matter of perspective. I'd say you learned alot.
    Travelling with a trailer is always an adventure. If you are going alone, I'd have a getway bag with a campstove set up, sleeping bag, pad & small ground tent & just leave the trailer home for those. It will give you more variety in your experience as well.

    Honestly Jason, it was better you turned around. All terrain tires do kind of suck in sticky slippery mud but I don't think mud terrain tires would have gotten you much further with how slick that ground was and the steepness of it with the trailer. It's good to get out on your own. That's when you really find your & your equipment limits. All you can do from this is learn.

    Did I hear correctly, you are towing 3,000+ lbs? How did you double the trailer weight? What extras are in there? Maybe it is time for a trailer weight loss program, if it hasn't been used on the last 2 trips it goes into the garage and not the trailer. Just a thought.

      I agree. Those individual tire decompressors make no sense to me at all, I can deflate all four of my tires to exactly the same psi in the time it would take him to do each one. Can do it even faster that way than with the ARB decompressor I bought, which is nice to have, but certainly not necessary.

    Why would you air down trailer tires? There’s no power/traction gained from them and you actually hurt yourself by increasing drag and nominally decreasing trailer height.

    I tried using those deflators about a year or two ago and I ran into problems with them constantly. They always seem to get out of calibration, and since they all look the same, it's really easy to lose track of which one was off by a few psi, so when you recalibrate, you basically have to do them ALL again. No matter how tight I set them or how careful i was when taking them out and putting them away, they always ended up out of calibration after a few trips. That and they took forever to deflate. In the end I ended up just learning how to "look for the bulge" by sight using a valve core remover. It's so much faster to deflate now (takes me about 30 seconds a tire) and it turns out my eye is apparently more sensitive than those deflators. I air down to the desired bulge and am rarely off by more than 1 psi. usually it's like all but one will be 18psi and one stray will be 19psi. I heard that there are some military spec deflators that are really accurate, but they're like $350+ for a set of four. I started working on a video for my channel about deflating "by eye" hopefully i'll have it finished and published in the near future

    • @TheKPDX
      @TheKPDX 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep, for decades those deflators have been notorious for being finicky and really best if you always go to the same PSI. A rapid deflator can get the job done in about the same time and allows target PSI variation.

    • @CarsAndZebras
      @CarsAndZebras 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I actually did a review of the Boulder Tools automatic tire deflators. I set them at ~15-16 PSI and let them run while I prepare everything else. You're right, they aren't exactly accurate. But they will deflate while I prepare other things. Then I manually set them exactly where I want them.

    Thank you for sharing this video Jason. We live here in North Carolina and didn't know that there is a trail like this. Can you give me the coordinates to this trail again? Once I get my 4Runner, I will give it a try. I see that you use 4L it should have no problem with the MaxTrack board underneath. However, it would be easier if you have a spotter and a set of off-road tires. But what a great attempt. You should be proud of yourself for getting that far all by yourself! Best of luck to you on your over landing adventures.

  • @KaiDragon
    @KaiDragon 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    At 18:33, I believe you could have made it up a little further because your momentum was good until you let off the gas. I would have long winch up the hill with a extended strap from a strong tree until I reach a dry grip surface. And dealing with tires if your looking to get new sets I would go with a hybrid mud/all terrain tire within a reasonable budget prize. Great Overlanding Video.

  • @steveegbert7429
    @steveegbert7429 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Jason, you need to take the time to set the deflators individually. Checking length / height will only get you close. The determining factor is the spring inside, and they can vary from each other even if they are identical length. Take an hour at home and get it right.

      @@SwellRunner thanks for letting me know! I assume you use Gaia for navigation?
      I'm working my way through your videos and it's really inspiring me! Keep up the great work!

    Wow, that is a ton of stuff to drag around for a solo short outing. You do know that people hike with an 70 liter pack on there backs for longer outings than this outing of yours?

    I really enjoy your videos. But I have to ask, why do North Americans carry so much unnecessary gear?

    • @LordHaveMercyOnUs247
      @LordHaveMercyOnUs247 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Just in case you need it, better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it. And besides...we’re Americans 😎

      Lol fair enough. I can understand going tool and parts heavy. But all the excess luxury, gadgets etc just add more weight, more setup / pack up time. Each to their own, but in my experience something is not refined by filling it over full, but rather by removing everything that’s not needed ✌️

    SOLO
    I think most people develop by starting to adventure when they are young & single and often go alone. Then they have girl/boyfriends or friends who will come with them. Next its family and then often your family & others. Recently, alot of people with families have been diving in which has changed the dynamic some & of course, there's always exceptions & variations. I know for myself, it has been a big change from me going by myself or a girlfriend in a relatively unplanned, light load adventure to planned, nearly expedition style camping with my family. After decades of the other, I've only just now started investing in a family tent, coleman style stove, roof rack gear, etc. That said, my Mom is in her 70s & travels remote & solo with just her dog & sleeping in her rig so maybe it's the circle of life.

    its the reason why I dont like BFG all terrains... they pack mud really quickly and become useless. They've let me down before.
    But if you really wanted too ... you couldnt have winched yourself up there...

    You have a winch, maxtraxx, crawl control, rear diff locker. Why don’t you use it?

    • @SwellRunner
      @SwellRunner  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Used it all but the winch and crawl control.

    • @toddhoffmaster6057
      @toddhoffmaster6057 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Crawl control doesn't work too well in the mud. Momentum is best for mud. Possibly a wider turn and started it back a little further before the turn. I don't like Maxtraxx, they basically work on sand and that's about it.

      Yup Using the winch was the only way forward with that trailer. 18 months ago this would of been unthinkable for you to even try. Good job, good try

      Eugenio Guerra download maps before you go Gaia maps

    • @daigenTube
      @daigenTube 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes you need a cellular enabled iPad to get the gps working. However you do NOT need the cellular iPad to be connected to a cellular network (paying for the connection). I use Gaia GPS too and tried it with an iPad with and without cellular, the one without the cellular was completely useless without a WiFi connection.

    Haha! We got stuck in *exactly* the same spot on our GT trip in April. We camped at the same site on the AT and fell into the same trap looking at Google satellite imagery. We had a helluva time turning around my 4R, a Tacoma with offroad teardrop, and a jk unlimited with offroad teardrop. Did you have any trouble with the big double-hump shortly before? My friends' trailers plowed into the crests pretty badly.

    • @SwellRunner
      @SwellRunner  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No problems on the double hump. It was fun to do though! Plenty of mud on the max coupler!

    welcome to the realworld SOUTH where all yall overlanding cool stuff gets a lesson of red clay slides you back go at the bottom of the hill. Do not pass go. Wish more of them would try it.
    Not trying to be mean , because i would like to overland and camp the midwest !! But the slippery clay around the SouthEast is not friendly for added weight and trailers.

      Not as new you to exploring the woods. Start back in the 90s with my dad as a young kid. Always had three or more vehicles with use evertime. Just in case something happens. One time had to leave the vehicles overnight in the woods in mid winter to get part fix in the morning to drive out the next day
