This was literally the video that inspired me to become a professional dancer, which I still do to this day. 8 years old in my room trying to learn this chore. I love her SO MUCH! Janet is the blueprint for all the pop girls today that sing and DANCE with actual conceptual videos and performances. Beyoncé even credits her as one of her top 3 biggest influences. She is the legend, the ICON, the GODDESS and Janet!!!

The short film was earth shattering. It told a story with The Knowledge, Miss You Much and this song. It was an exciting follow up to Control. Control was Janet's inner world. Rhythm Nation was her changing the world around her.

I remember when this video premiered back in 1989 and it literally took the world by storm and was the hottest video out at the time. Janet was literally the Number 1 artist on MTV and BET during the release of the Rhythm Nation Album and music videos. She broke all kinds of records with that album and this video won a Grammy for Best Long Form Video of the Year and you can see why. Iconic on all levels.

Also, I feel like in the UK, she might not have had as high a profile as MJ, but I was only 9 when this came out so I don't really know. Looking back, Rhythm Nation is a better album than Bad.

@@bridgethegapreactions You are correct (on all counts). I am in the UK and was 11 at the time. Janet didn’t have anywhere near MJ’s profile over here until 92/93 when she had the Luther Vandross duet leading into the Janet. album. The first two RN1814 singles went largely unnoticed as they were too RnB for the UK charts at the time which was still full of Stock Aitken & Waterman pop, Italo House, early Madchester/indie etc. The black and white video, hard edged sound didn’t cut through. The grandiosity of a mini movie / concept album / releasing almost everything as singles to rival MJ didn’t translate as she (and MTV) wasn’t as big (yet) in the UK as the US. I think this is why they released Come Back To Me early in the UK (hoping it would be a big hit ballad like Let’s Wait Awhile). It’s the video that made me a fan anyway!

@@bridgethegapreactionsbefore calling rhythm nation a better album than bad, keep in mind that bad scored five number 1 hits, rhythm nation didn't. Also, bad had incredible songs like dirty Diana, man in the mirror and smooth criminal which are superior to singles on RN

Yes we did. 1989....I was 11. Every single girl in school had to have that album.
Saw it win 8 Billboard awards in one night.
7 top 5 singles (Only album to do so)
Highest selling debut tour to this day
    3 #1 singles in 3 different years (Only album to do so in 89, 90, & 91)
Scored her first #1 Rock and Roll single (Black Cat)
Yeah it was a movement...not just an album.

Great reaction video!!! I first saw this amazing music video in May 1989, when it was the last video in a Rhythm Nation 30 minute special compilation video, which was shown on BBC2, which featured earlier in the the special compilation video Janet's fantastic R & B love song Miss You Much!!! I was really struck by the black and white background of the video, which definitely adds to the seriousness of the video's social message!!! The lyrics and the dancing in the video are just out of this world!!! I was really captivated by Janet's call for social action, justice and international solidarity and co operation, when Mikhail Gorbachev was helping to bring down the Soviet Bloc and offering the West an enduring political system of World Peace in a Common European Home!!! How his hopes for a better world were dashed just a couple of years later!!! The only other music video in 1989 that had the same kind of powerful effect on me in a social message way was Tears For Fears's masterpiece song Sowing The Seeds Of Love, which had a similar social protest message!!! Both Rhythm Nation and Sowing The Seeds Of Love are still incredibly relevant in terms of the deeply serious crisis in international relations between countries, with the West and Russia at loggerheads more than during the Cold War, and the world closer to nuclear World War Three!!! I'm really looking forward to seeing Janet Jackson performing at the O2 London, especially Rhythm Nation, which will be the finale song of undoubtedly a fantastic concert next Sunday!!! Regards Adam!!! 🙂🌞🌻💛🙏

Because this was initially posted on your Patreon, somebody probably already let you know that there is a video of Michael explaining that Janet asked for his permission to use military theme choreography for this project because she saw him use it in Captain EO. It's a cute video that you should really watch because she said that she wanted his permission "to steal an idea that he had." Michael could apparently see that at some point dancing started moving towards being a little bit more military style, and so on his next project he was planning to incorporate that more. He said to her in a loving humorous way, "I could choke you! I was going to do that in my next short film. But because you're my baby sister, go ahead you do it." That turned out to not only be one of Michael's favorite songs of hers. It was also his favorite video of hers and he always let anyone who had worked on it know that they knocked it out of the park! They thought more alike than anyone else in the family in terms of business, creativity, etc.
I think the Control album is when he gained respect for her as an artist. The rhythm nation album is when he truly respected her as a formidable competitor, and was yet so proud of her at the same time. I think he trusted that she would do the military style justice, but was even more surprised and impressed with how funky it was adding Street elements. Later on during the dangerous tour, Michael would incorporate those military elements into his choreography.
