Nice images. The opening video is also nice. I really like the 22mm lens that is unfortunately for only for the EOS M. They needed to put some custom setting functions on the EOS M. This camera certainly will not win a time to focus contest. This camera captures light very nicely as the images in your video attest.

I'm finding the metering to be excellent on the EOS M. I use one of 2 approaches and never get a bad exposure. In at least one focus mode the camera meters at whatever point you press the screen (a square appears where you press). So that method is basically touch to expose and ultimately focus. Alternatively, I point the camera in a general direction which gives the precise metering I want, hit exposure lock, recompose and focus and shoot. I prefer the second method, but get brilliant accurate results either way. The exposure lock button is the left arrow key (has an asterisk ✳ symbol next to it).

    Dear Graham,
Thank you for the nice review. I'm glad you're finding the EOS M quite usable. To be honest, when it came out I didn't see how it would help my photography life. I have a Canon 40D, and my most used lenses are the Tokina 11-16mm, Sigma 18-200, Canon 100-400 (like you) and the 500mm f/4. I just didn't see how saving a few grams on the camera size and having to grapple with the EOS M's handling, lack of viewfinder, poor AF, etc. would be attractive. I hear that in Japan there's an EOS M version 2, if I'm not mistaken. Maybe some of these shortcomings were dealt with.
Having an APS-C sensor, which means having to continue to use the large DSLR lenses, does't quite appeal to me. Nikon's approach with their System 1 V2 makes more sense to me. I could see myself go out birding and not have to carry much weight - only the V2+adapter+70-300mm lens, for instance, and having a tremendous reach. Since the System 1 hasn't been received very well in some circles (though users seem quite happy), perhaps the micro 4/3 system might be a compromise (although the existing Pany 100-300mm lens doesn't seem to be that great). Please let me know if you have any further thoughts on the latter.
Anyway, just some thoughts. Thank you for the update on the EOS M.

Interesting review thanks, holding the lens in your palm while shooting is just good practice anyway as it provides the steadiest non pod platform, so the tiny grip shouldn't matter much.

I might pick this camera up here very soon. I can get one with the 22mm and18-55mm lenses, as well as the lens adapter (I own several ef/s lenses already) and the flash...all brand new...for $430 shipped (about 275 pounds).

Just bought mine for £180 including 18-55mm lens and 90EX flash.
Very excited! :) I should get it tomorrow. :)

Just picked one up for £199 in Argos, mainly as an alternative for hiking to my 650D.
You mention in the video that some images are over or under exposed, I also found this, I also had that problem with the 650D as well.
Anyways overall I'm loving this little pocket DSLR class camera, the AF speed isn't a million miles away from what I see on the 650D either, even action shots are doable.

I snapped up this bargain deal too. Currently, Currys are offering the same deal for even less.

I did it! PC World £295.
I haven't given it a real work out yet, not tried the adapter but I have updated the firmware, a very noticeable difference.
I was quite pleased when I tried the flash gun on my 5d, i think I'll be keeping that in my pocket.

Yes it's a real bargain at this price and so well made. You have discovered the little jewel flash gun an extra benefit and can be used with remote triggers for lower pwoer fill ins

    Hi Graham and all.
I hope you had a good Christmas and wish you a happy New Year.
Just thought you might be interested in knowing that a big on-line retailer has been and is going to offer the Panasonic G6 for £370 or less, after the £100 cashback, in their lightening offers. It is on again tonight [friday 27th Dec] at 7.00pm and it will be interesting to see whether they offer it even cheaper than before.
This comes with the very good compact and silent focussing 14/140 lens which is 28/280 full frame equivalent focal length. The lens itself usually costs more than the offer price for the complete kit.
I only mention it because I know you have been very active with Panasonic camera recently and this one seems to be far superior in most ways to this Canon, at very little more money. Obviously one of the attractions of the Canon is in the use of Canon-fit legacy lenses, but M4/3 mounts also have adaptors for just about any lenses I'm told.
Also looking at your video, there doesn't seem to be any advantage to the Canon in size, because the standard lens seems to be bigger than the 14/140 M4/3.
Thank you very much for your videos and your quite excellent book on the FZ200.

Graham Houghton It is on Amazon 'today's deals' Lightening deals' which last an hour or two only or until stocks have gone. It starts in 1hr 40m but there is no price on it yet. Before Christmas they were selling for £470 with £100 to claim back from Panasonic. That is less than the lens alone sells for on Ebay. It will be interesting to see where they set the price this evening.

Graham Houghton Yeap.. But I may return. I am not sure if I am doing anything wrong, but it does pretty poorly in low light with 18-55mm. May be I am spoiled by G15.

I have the 22mm, 11-22mm and 18-55mm lenses and use them with the Eos M mk2. This has faster focusing than my original Eos M.

  • @marcandsebe
    @marcandsebe 10 ปีที่แล้ว

Very good review. I had the Eos M and liked it a lot, but the focusing was still a bit slow even with the firmware update. So I imported the Eos M mk2. This has much faster focusing and the screen does not go black after every shot. It also has wifi built in. The firmware on the M2 is 1.0.2 and would like to know if 2.0.2 would go on it.

Nice review, does the adaptor works with 3rd party lens like tamron 17-50 or else especially the AF? im curently owning couple tamron lens and it would be nice if i can use em

    • @GrahamHoughton12
      @GrahamHoughton12  10 ปีที่แล้ว

If the original lens was compatible with canon efs system then they will work with the adaptor as all the data wiring is extended through the adaptor

Eric Hewis If you have existing EF EFS lenses it makes good sense with the free adaptor especially if you have IS lenses.

I also bought the EOSM-FD adapter so now I can use my beautiful 75-300FD and my other FD lenses which you can pick up for a bargain.

Of course they are manual lenses with the eos-m but some of the old film camera lenses had great optical quality

ooohh no - Graham bought a Canon EOS M :) I thought for sure you would go for the Panasonic GX7 or GH3 which are just fantastic and so many fantastic lenses for the M43 system. -
Everyone complained about the AF - to me the lack of Manual Controls is a total turn off - but I assume the IQ is about the same as the Rebels as I belive it has the same sensor.
The Olympus OMD-5 is also an amazing mirroless camera and price is down as an updated is expected sometime next year -
Then of course there is the Panasonic GM1 - so little and so powerful and has a fantastic kit lens -
Always enjoy your videos - but I think I would start pulling my hair out with the EOS M just watching you with the AF Hunting - but I assume you had some Canon gear so therefore you do not have to get any lenses -
I do have NEX5n and NEX7 - but the dilemma is that there are no fast zooms -
and I think that is due to size and weight - so to me the M43 system with the fantastic Panasonic 12-35mm F2.8 and 35-100mm F2.8 and the 20mm F1.7 lenses - so small and light and so super sharp -
So to really go small and light M43 is the way to go - Sony now has the FF A7/R but same issue as the NEX system has - no fast zooms - and who wants to put a current 70-200mm F2.8 on such small bodies -
So until they can create smaller and lighter fast zooms for APS-C and FF then not really practical except for Prime lenses.
Now Olympus Stylus is trying to compete with the Panasonic FZ200 - not quite the zoom but constant F2.8 and a smaller body -

Actually it turns out better than this video suggests and after a short while the touch screen becomes second nature. It has extended the life of my Canon kit but i guess eventually I will dispose of it concentrating more on my m4/3 systems ( GH1, GH2 and GH3, G5 and Olympus epl2)

I suggest you use a better microphone. this video sounds muffled when you're speaking. no offense. just a suggestion.
