I have a Review video coming on it, the focusing systems are tricky to figure out, but once you get the hang of it, they are on par with the Live View Focusing of the T4i. Not good for fast moving subjects, everything is is ok.
Thanks for taking the time to make the vid, very useful...I am getting very good results from this little camera & I am a 1Ds Mark III user....The M is so portable!
Hi Michael, Thanks a lot for posting videos like this for using the EOS-M camera! Sometimes, trying to understand step by step printed guides is way more difficult than just following along with a video tutorial. I was seriously contemplating returning my M because of the slow autofocus alone, but understanding the different focus modes gives me some hope for it. I only have a week left of my warranty to decide to keep or toss, but hoping it pulls through okay for my Beginner's needs!
I like to shoot on manual, 1/60 shutter speed, about 4.5 -5.6 aperture and as low ISO as possible, but usually in the 500-640 range depending on how much light I have. If you are doing makeup tho, you might prefer a t3i, t4i, t5i or 70D as they have articulating monitors and you could watch yourself as you are shooting Best wishes M
In auto+m focus mode, half press shutter and the manual focus ability is active... Once auto focus has locked, during half shutter press manual focusing is possible.
I noticed they're saying this update should increase the speed by 2.3x - Is this something you could see being a huge improvement for the AF issue? Seeing as this is my first camera besides a basic point-and-shoot digital, I don't necessarily know how much a camera update is expected to resolve. Currently debating between keeping the EOS M or upsizing to a Rebel T4i...
Michael, is the focus an issue while recording video? can I just turn it off? I'm new to camera's and am worried the focus speed will make my videos turn out bad. is there a way to not have focus during video? like a cell phone
This camera has a learning curve. But once you figure it out. It is bad ass! I picked up mine with the 22mm 3 batteries and sd card for 270. They are not selling them anymore in the U.S. So grab one when you can!!!
I See You I just got one off eBay. Am I correct is assuming that I have to have an auto focus lens to have auto focus? I bought one of those $40 CCTV lenses that I saw recommended for the EOS M in another video. The lens is manual.
of note depending on the lens it may not have the af focus mode option with some non ef-m lenses (like the ef-85mm f1.8 :-p but you can just flip the switch on the lens itself to switch between af and manual :-p

Make sure your Eos m has the latest firmware as well. The new one improves focus speed by a bit as well. Definitely a must have.

That last feauture where you can magnify a sections of the viewfinder to fine focus was pretty darn cool!
Awesome tips! I just ordered a kit since they've just been discounted heavily. I'll definitely be returning to this video again and again!

Good job Michael.
I would recommend a 50mm 1.8 or a 50mm 1.4 to start, depending on your budget.
very cool man! thanks!!! just got my EOS M!! and this will help out a lot
2.3x would be significant, but you never know until you have it in your hands. The T4i is amazing

Hey Mike, Can you put together a video comparison of the Canon 3TI and the Nikon D3200 on Video
I really need a model like that girl to improve my shooting skills
Thanks a lot for the video!!!
thanks for the info on manual focus, now it feels like a 5d mark II
Canon has an update coming for it that will improve the focus speed.
Eu esta procurando um vídeo que mostra-se o focus dessa câmera, parabéns, você foi bem objetivo no vídeo.
Would love to see a tutorial on how to shoot in raw with magic lantern on this EOS-M there's not even one tutorial on TH-cam just video tests
Dude, thanks! Tomorrow will be easier to take sports event shooting!

Hi Michael, there are so many negative reviews of EOS M's auto focus system. What's your take?
It's hard to FOCUS on the explanation with this beautiful model. GREAT TUTORIAL.

why does my canon eos M doesn't have a ONE SHOT or AF operation
Manual all day everyday.
Turn off your Auto Focus, dial it in manually
Sure just turn it off! I usually turn mine off for most of my videos anyway.
Seems too much hassle for a camera, I want to concentrate on my photo and not "chimping" so much. I'd wait for the price to drop to 500 buck.
