my point exactly Eduardo Domingo G. Dela Cruz. I want one for still picture taken and not for sports as I have the canon m50 and serves the sports or action picture taking.
Oh man, I bet that f1.2 FD lens is great! Awesome tip. I hadn't even thought about that combo. I was on the fence about this camera but now I want one for my B rig. Thanks for the overview!
As a stills camera it does a great job for landscapes, portraits, still life, architecture .... and adapted lenses work so well. As a very cheap ultralight travel camera, you just can't beat the M, M2, M3 or M10.
they fixed the autofocus so it functions, but it is still slow. if you don't mind a little slower focus system, the eos m is an amazing camera for the price.
I love my EOS-M. Works identically to my T4i. I rarely do action photography, so focus is just fine. The 18-55mm IS lens takes sharp photos. I use the 22mm f2 lens mainly for indoor low light photos. Photos appear sharp through ISO 800. Movie mode is great. I hope Canon changes it's mind and sells the new 11-22mm and 55-200mm lenses here in the USA...Hint...Hint...Hint.
I just bought this camera after selling the t2i. The af is a bit slow but with the new firmware its faster than most eos dslr in live view so a decent upgrade. But the one thing I cant seem to figure out is how to use touch focus without touch shutter. But the build quality is on par with higher end dslr bodies and it feels a little heavy and very solid. also the audio setting do work from the stock camera.
Fodox (or however you spell it) has a grip for the M that also offsets the tripod mount so you can use any plate. It's been out for a while now. Their are at least two other clones on eBay. I bought a kit with the lens hood and grip from their eBay store. Works great. Pictures on my IG account pcmofo.
Hello loved the video ad have a question, does the fact that the USB is disabled mean that you cannot install picture profiles on the camera via eos utility or at all?
I haven't been able to get EOS utility to work correctly (camera control and video display), but it does detect the camera. You might be able to install it (haven't tried). Or you can set it up manually in camera via the picture style settings.
Forgive the ignorance... But why do Eos M lenses need to say the mm and aperture is "equivalent"? If I'm after good aperture for this body, what am I after?
Does it do uncompressed HDMI out? Great overview of the EOS-M, I've been so closing to buying one on a few occasions. I was wondering why the price had dropped so much, I'm guessing it's related to the slow AF?
The hdmi out is more like the 7d, you can see it here www.dslrfilmnoob.com/2013/10/07/canon-eos-m-hdmi-output/ It's above 720 but below 1080, so better than the t2i but not as good as the 5dmkIII.
onelonedork Thanks, my other Canon is the 7D, but I find myself using my Panny TM-700 camcorder for most of my YT vids due to the superb autofocus. I see myself possibly adding a few cameras and a video switcher to save time in the editor and for live streaming using multiple cameras. As I'm sure you know, most studios use the Canon G series camcorders (TWIT) as they provide the uncompressed HDMI output and unlike DSLR's, are designed to record video at long intervals.
You can actually go cheaper than the G series if you are doing switching. The old HV20 (around $100 used on ebay) and hv30 both output full 1080p hd via hdmi uncompressed. You can get a bunch of them for cheap and run them into a switch. Probably not as good in the auto focus department but still very usable and very very cheap.
That's a used flash bracket I found on ebay for $15. No brand or labels on it, but it works perfect for the EOS-M. I would say pretty much any adjustable flash bracket kit would do the trick.
So, given the 1.6 crop factor, will a 50mm lens (ie Canon 50mm f1.8) put too much distance between me and my subject? And does the Canon mount work for non canon lenses?
When they say "not so good for photography"- is it mostly because of the autofocus? I'd think that, being a Canon, same size sensor, ability to use the same lenses as the regular dslrs, that image quality would be on par.
Richard Clarke I have the 18-55mm and it's not a great indoor lens even with isolated 200 and shutter speed at 50 and good lighting not having a lot of luck with image quality I'd go for a manual focus f1.8 or something if doing video work, I have a yongnuo 50mm f1.8 and it's great just don't bother with its autofocus slow and noisy on the yongnuo as it's not stm but for a 40 quid lens quality is great, need and ef-s adapter as well though
Nice summary. What is that flash bracket and where can I buy one? Thanks! Plus, you say "Gitzo" which is a real company, but you spell "Giottos" which I'm not sure about.
any word on the eos m mark 2? canon is adding dual pixel to all their cameras. would be awesome if the eos m had dual pixel, especially since all their ef-m lenses are stm.
As long as you use a properly made adapter you'll be good to go. The adapters for normal Canon cameras (EF & EF-S) use an additional glass element in order to get things working (not a very good way to go). The eos-m adapter doesn't require any extra glass element so the adapter is basically giving you the same results with the lens as you'd get on an old FD camera body (with 1.6x crop of course).
Magic Lantern does not work with the M3 and never will. Unfortunately the firmwares for the M3 are the same as what Canon uses for their point an shoot cameras. Magic Lantern only works with Canon DSLRs. The firmware for the M is the same as what Canon uses for the 5D Mark III, that's why the folks at Magic Lantern were able to port their hack over to the M.
I own this camera and I am very happy with it as a second camera to my 5D3, but is there a way to listen to the audio to review after it's been recorded? I hear it but very faint, can't find anything in the menu... thoughts?
Useful vid thanks; this is down to £200 in the UK now, seems like a great option for low cost filming, 35-105 looks like a nice value FD lens too, wasn't aware of that one.
Excellent video. I really really wanted to buy an EOS M camera, but I'm mainly a photographer and as you repeatedly and correctly mentioned, it sucks as a photo camera. Happy to see that they made a cheeper lens adapter for normal canon lenses. And great point about the M mount being closer to the lens than mirrored canon's. I would have just recommended the 100D since it does both videos and photos well, and still very affordable. But I see now that the EOS M does have a trick over the 100D in using these classic lenses. Thanks for the video. Very informative!
I have been using the eos m for a past few months and I can say confidently that with the newer firmware, the af is more than adequate. I shoot photos all the time and rarely I got any problem with af.
Asad the great well, just try a DSLR (any DSLR) and you will understand why the AF on the EOS M is considered bad. It is not horrible, it is just relatively bad.
Samtagri I used to have a t2i and yeah relative to dslr, its slow. But even in low light, the camera can Focus pretty quickly. It not super fast but more than serviceable.
Samtagri I have the 5DmkIII and the 650D (T4i) and the EOS M is almost identical to the 650D focus speed wise with the latest ML based on the 2.02 FW, no trouble at all with moving targets, it isn't a patch on my 5DmkIII but then neither is the 650D.
CragScrambler This cannot be true. maybe you mean the live view focus speed of the 650D is the same as the EOS M. What I am referring to is the focus speed using the viewfinder and the phase-detect focus points. Those are quicker than the live view focus of the EOS M for sure.
I noticed that the Canon FD EOS M F12 lens had an adapter to attach it to the camera body. I looked like it wouldn't allow the camera and lens to communicate. I'm having that problem with a couple of lens that I purchased for my EOS M, which I like very much. I have a T mount adapter for my Opteka 400 - 800mm lens. It was a good price and I am a beginner. I also bought an extension tube for macro shots. Problem is, if the camera can't sense the attached lens so will not shoot the picture even if I put it on manual mode. How do you get around that problem?
Not sure if your problem has been solved, but there's a custom function in Canon's original menu system (Far right tab) that allows you to let the "shutter release without a lens". That should let it work even when it doesn't detect a lens :)
Lachlan Harman thank you, but yes, I found the answer in a couple of other TH-cam videos. I'm still experimenting with the camera and lens and these TH-cam videos have been very helpful. Any tips you may have will be much appreciated.
There's a video called "The $400 EOS M Rig" or something like that which explains the accessories that somebody else bought to trick out their EOS M for video which I'd highly recommend (I'm following almost all of their advice, as the M is my only camera for my videos), and I'll be making a video on how to trick out basic cameras like the M for video work in July for my TH-cam channel if you can wait that long :)
The Canon eos-m is perfect for that. Same sensor as the t3i and t2i. Video quality is pretty much identical to every other Canon aps-c camera up to the 7d.
twitter.com/DSLRFILMNOOB Sorry, i'll start adding that to my show info. It's also in the top right corner on the site as well as a small icon on my channel page.
great video! making me want to buy a used one from ebay. It has the same video quality as the t2i or? Prob. will just get the body, the ef lens adapter and some old glass and adapters. Very intriguing :)
Wow this sounds like it would be an excellent 2nd camera for video! I shoot music videos and sometimes one camera can be a bitch. Thanks for your videos man.
Some of best photos were taken with this little puppy, I absolutely love it
honestly this camera is great for photography man... just not sports but still shots it is amazing.
my point exactly Eduardo Domingo G. Dela Cruz. I want one for still picture taken and not for sports as I have the canon m50 and serves the sports or action picture taking.
I found it to be great for stills as well, since I won't shot an air race or something like.
Didn't they fix the slow auto focus issue with a recent firmware update?
Yes.
they fixed the autofocus so it functions, but it is still slow. if you don't mind a little slower focus system, the eos m is an amazing camera for the price.
Photographic Elements I've seen comparisons with the new firmware against the old and the significance is pretty amazing.
which firmware version, the 2.0.2?
Eos utility and usb does work. You need the latest version of utility from the canon website. Not the crap in box version.
I love my EOS-M. Works identically to my T4i. I rarely do action photography, so focus is just fine. The 18-55mm IS lens takes sharp photos. I use the 22mm f2 lens mainly for indoor low light photos. You're such a great reviewer. Everything any one could want to know you go in to depth
Try to cover as much as I can, thanks for watching!
You can extend "battery" life with external power source or external battery. Special hole available in battery cap on the bottom.
I'll look into it, thanks for the heads up. I don't remember seeing the normal rubber tab you get on other cameras but I might have overlooked it.
I just bought this camera after selling the t2i. The af is a bit slow but with the new firmware its faster than most eos dslr in live view so a decent upgrade. Canon didn't mess up the port Delroy controller doesn't support it
I would love to see a tutorial on how to shoot in raw with magic lantern on this EOS-M, or just a work flow in magic lantern on the EOS M
Fantastic comments and great tips! I have the two kit lenses and am after one more for filming peoples... Perhaps a 50mm prime lens?
The Olympus OM 50mm f1.8 is a good one for under $50, the Canon 55mm f1.2 is nice if you can find one at the right price.
onelonedork how would the canon fd 50 1.8 compare to the olympus 50 1.8?
+onelonedork Wait. If the camera has a mx aperture of 3.5, can a lense with an aperture of 1.2 improve that?
yo with my magic lantern when i switch to movie mdoe it freezes and he screen has a bunch of those technical difficulties channels and just glithces
Thanks for the heads up. That's a pretty nice looking grip adapter. I'll look into it.
With the new firmware, I think it shoots photo just fine. Though the focus does not as snappy as the dslr because of there is only live-view mode.
Does focus peaking work with the FD lenses?
Forgive the ignorance... But why do Eos M lenses need to say the mm and aperture is "equivalent"? If I'm after good aperture for this body, what am I after?
The crop factor on a EOS-M body is 1.6, so 1.6 times the mm of your lens. It's the same as the t2i.
Does it do uncompressed HDMI out? Great overview of the EOS-M, I've been so closing to buying one on a few occasions. I was wondering why the price had dropped so much, I'm guessing it's related to the slow AF?

What build of ML you're using in this video?
Does that headphone monitoring work(0:53)?
Can't find a build with that enabled.
can you get clean hdmi out of this camera
Question? What is that rig that you were showing with the battery and mem card being able to be accessed called? I'd like me one of those
That's a used flash bracket I found on ebay for $15. No brand or labels on it, but it works perfect for the EOS-M. I would say pretty much any adjustable flash bracket kit would do the trick.
How are you focusing the manual FD lenses in video mode on this camera?
So, given the 1.6 crop factor, will a 50mm lens (ie Canon 50mm f1.8) put too much distance between me and my subject? And does the Canon mount work for non canon lenses?
They make adapter rings for other non-Canon lenses.
where can I buy Canon EOS M online for quite cheap price?
I heard it gets better for photography with the lastest oficial firmware update.
Slightly better, but not by much.
When they say "not so good for photography"- is it mostly because of the autofocus? I'd think that, being a Canon, same size sensor, ability to use the same lenses as the regular dslrs, that image quality would be on par.
+Lisa Lee The M3 is brilliant for photography
I believe it is related to the autofocus. Installing the latest firmware will dramatically improve the auto focus.
hey noob,.. is this the m-1 or m-2,.. also how long does the recording time on this camera, is it 12 minutes like dslr or longer???
I am having trouble getting my rode video mic pro on the canon EOS m. Any tips. please and thank you.
Hi,
I wanted to ask about about the kit lens, which situations would you use either 18-55 or 22mm. Benefits during video etc.?
Richard Clarke I have the 18-55mm and it's not a great indoor lens even with isolated 200 and shutter speed at 50 and good lighting not having a lot of luck with image quality I'd go for a manual focus f1.8 or something if doing video work, I have a yongnuo 50mm f1.8 and it's great just don't bother with its autofocus slow and noisy on the yongnuo as it's not stm but for a 40 quid lens quality is great, need and ef-s adapter as well though

any word on the eos m mark 2? canon is adding dual pixel to all their cameras. would be awesome if the eos m had dual pixel, especially since all their ef-m lenses are stm.
Does the FD lenses work fine for the entire focus range ? on normal canon cameras it loses the infinity end
As long as you use a properly made adapter you'll be good to go. sir can you share the link on the magic lantern firmware..i cant find it in their website..thanks a bunch
You can find the latest Magic Lantern updates for the EOS-M here: www.dslrfilmnoob.com/2014/02/17/canon-eos-m-questions-answered/
thanks man..
Will it work for the M3?
Magic Lantern does not work with the M3 and never will. Unfortunately the firmwares for the M3 are the same as what Canon uses for their point an shoot cameras. Magic Lantern only works with Canon DSLRs. The firmware for the M is the same as what Canon uses for the 5D Mark III, that's why the folks at Magic Lantern were able to port their hack over to the M.
Why the USB controller is not working?
Canon disabled all USB controllers in firmware.
can you use nikkor glass
I own this camera and I am very happy with it as a second camera to my 5D3, but is there a way to listen to the audio to review after it's been recorded? I hear it but very faint, can't find anything in the menu... thoughts?
If you have a field monitor, i audio is sent via hdmi during playback, you could use the headphone out on the monitor.
What kind of adapter is he using ..?
Antonio Ramirez it looks like a fotga adapter
Useful vid thanks; this is down to £200 in the UK now, seems like a great option for low cost filming, 35-105 looks like a nice value FD lens too, wasn't aware of that one.

Lachlan Harman yeah that guys setup is awesome. Get his grip setup with those FD lens and I'd bet that would be a sweet video setup.
Too right, you are! I recently picked up an FD adapter and a couple of lenses... very sweet indeed. :D
sample footage?
In the future review sir. Finishing that up, should be out by the end of the month.
Awesomeness!!!
since when has a mirrorless camera become a DSLR ?
i want something compact and already have a t3i. would this be good for quick videos. And is quality as good?
The Canon eos-m is perfect for that. Same sensor as the t3i and t2i. Video quality is pretty much identical to every other Canon aps-c camera up to the 7d.
Wow, Thanks!
how can i make the background blurry while filming , i have The EOS M10
Glam By Lala Depends on your lens and its F stop.
Where’s the link to your Twitter account? I couldn’t find it even in your site.
twitter.com/DSLRFILMNOOB Sorry, i'll start adding that to my show info. It's also in the top right corner on the site as well as a small icon on my channel page.
I clicked on that button in the site, but it just refreshed the page!
Thanks, anyway
I'll take a look at it. Sorry about that.
I love my eos m !
I've Find out i'm using it more than my t2i
It's a great little camera for the price. One of the best values out there right now.
great video! making me want to buy a used one from ebay. It has the same video quality as the t2i or? Prob. will just get the body, the ef lens adapter and some old glass and adapters. Very intriguing :)
Same quality as the t2i.
DSLR?
Wow this sounds like it would be an excellent 2nd camera for video! I shoot music videos and sometimes one camera can be a bitch. Thanks for your videos man.
it is good for photography
just not for snobs
why do i love you so much?
Is it my goofy looking face?
Did he just call it a DSLR?
Yes he did, and this seems to be a common mistake on american reviews. The camera also shoots great stills shots .... the guy knows zero.
Wasabi Power!
