Maybe It was designed to look that way since he was going to be like most of the movie. I would go as far as to say they might have done that model first.
I agree, although in general I dislike the design for the male characters especially compared to the female characters. They put so much effort into making the female characters sexy but the dudes just look so goofy and dumb with their teeny tiny eyes.
The funny thing is alot of ancient cultures did actually have shamans who did have fursonas where they either had an animal familiar they had a spiritual connection with, they were an animal in a human body, they were an an animal and a human spirit in a human body, or they were a reincarnated animal.
The wolf girls have nearly no screen time compared to everything else so I seriously doubt it. @mrE365 Yeah, true that. The point of my comment, wich I adressed more carefully in another comment, is that Saberspark wants to portray this movie as furrie oriented when it isn't. Besides anthro character, the movie has little to do with the furry fandom. I do not understand the need to taint this movie with Furry Fandom degeneracy, other that gaining more views through cheap click bait.
My mom found this movie in amazon, and because she likes animation she decided to watch, the thing is... SHE ACTUALLY LIKED THE MOVIE, and found nothing wrong or even suspicious. P.S she doesn't know what furrys are, so maybe she is pure enough
to their credit, though the art direction of the film is bizarre, the technical production aspects are spot on. the fur and wool looks so touchable. so they got that right.
yeah that's just software dude... no human had to make any of those hairs. you can find indi games on steam that cost less than 3 bucks that have better fur graphics than this
I think it’s because Zootopia and beastars don’t just ignore how the intelligence and ability to communicate would effect that reality. The present reality or history of sentient beings eating sentient beings is examined and integrated into social dynamics and society. Movies like this one just sorta... accept it and don’t bother to question the ethics of it or even the logical complications any inter-species interaction would run into as a result of it.
Yeah, I have to admit the character designs and animation overall are actually really good, even much better than those made-for-tv series from Dreamworks and Disney
Honestly the sheep are the ones giving me the big uncanny valley feeling because their faces look mostly human like 70% human but the rest is sheep and that’s just hhhh, there’s a line to anthro designs and people still dont see it
That line is very subjective, nothing in this video makes me think of the uncanny valley and I guess maybe the animators felt the same. Maybe we're in the minority though XD
6:24 - "Frozen got to it first." - Gods, that comment is ignorant. Not only was this version of The Snow Queen released a year before Frozen, but the Russians actually already made an animated Snow Queen movie as early as 1957. The Brits also made one in 1995. Not to mention Frozen doesn't even bear much resemblance to the original.
Just to illustrate your point further: This version of the Snow Queen had a trailer out before Disney even confirmed a name for Frozen- and before we even knew Frozen would be in 3D.
It’s like Overwatch and Paladins. Plenty of things in Paladins were released before Overwatch even had a name for it, and yet since Overwatch is what drew attention to the genre, all the people that want a “free Overwatch” simply go to Paladins, and obviously stuff comes into existence at the time they know about it, so now everyone thinks Paladins copied Overwatch. Now, I’m not mad at Overwatch, I just feel sorry for the people who worked on Paladins because of all the reviews of Paladins calling it an Overwatch knockoff. There are 42 abilities that OW and Paladins have in common, and only 6 of them originated on Overwatch. Would be nice if Blizzard at least listed Paladins as one of their inspirations instead of just taking advantage of the smaller company.

I *honestly* must thank you from the bottom of my heart that you aren't hating on furries like a lot of people. This may be our (us the furries) chance to actually get people to understand what we the furries are about. And these comments are surprisingly not anti-furry too, it's amazing. Perhaps, soon, with people like you, the furries like myself may get a chance to turn our image around...

i think the design of the female wolves could've been improved somewhat if they were just given digitigrade legs like the males, instead of the literally human/plantigrade legs they have EDIT: and maybe get rid of the human hairstyles too, just give them longish fur tufts, you could feasibly do cute 'hair' designs with that
like how they used chest fluff to substitute boobs. but to be serious ya i too like your idea of using stylable tufts instead of actual hair. many furry artists do it every so often but usually with fully feral animals
That was another thing that really annoyed me.... if you make a species the skeletal structure should be basically the same for male and female... this leg issue would just constantly nag me throughout the film
hair on furry characters is a divisive topic among furry artists actually, it's something I do with my characters, but I make their hair and fur color the same whereas some people I know make their hair look different. I couldn't watch this video without thinking about that argument of "well it looks weird on animals to have human hair" when it...really doesn't look that weird to me, or half the people making furry characters, especially for people who draw kemono style like I do.
Fun fact: While Frozen came before the Ice Queen, the movie, Frozen was based on the Ice Queen, the novel, except Frozen made the Ice Queen a protagonist yet in the original novel, the Ice Queen is an antagonist
ah, thanks for letting me know. I was confused why her role was the opposite of the role of the character she is based on. I doubt it was based on "women are never evil" because that sexist concept has been debunked many times both in terms of real history and in works of fiction.
If 'Let It Go' wasn't made, she would have remained a villain. The writers of the film thought that the song didn't fit a villain so they rewrote the story a bit.

i think the biggest problem with the movie is that the character designs contradict the story, when i look at the wolf characters they don't look like they would eat the sheep, and the should don't look like they would just passively take being eaten, there needs to be a balance, make the wolves look more menacing and an make the sheep look more timid, you can even still keep the more humanoid designs if the make the wolves teeth sharp and eyes more piercing, and make the sheep smaller and more puffy to make them look more defenseless
(i know this was two years ago but oh well) as a furry i genuinely like the designs of most of the characters, yes i think they were trying to reach out to our audience, but just flopped on some of the things you mentioned like the uncanny valley the textures and shapes of everything is great, but yes it just delves a little too far into uncanny valley
nothing in the nineties was for furries because furries didn't exist then. Mickey mouse and Minnie mouse were definitely mouselike and not people like, neither of them had visible muscles or jiggle physics....they were just goofy mice and so were the rescuers and goof troupe and all that other stuff from the 80s/90s cartoon era. Unless you're talking fritz the cat but ….well...that was pretty much an acid trip with cartoon animals and it was specifically said to be not for kids on the movie.

I personally think the male wolves work. But the female wolves are really out of sync here. They don't match the style of the male ones & so they look bad.
I’d like to see you do Alpha and Omega. I feel like that movie had potential but then they went in every wrong direction possible. Then made a hundred sequels about uninteresting offspring and ignoring the more interesting characters like Lily and Garth.
A&O 3 (The Great Wolf Games) is the most fun sequel to watch because of how obviously little effort went into it. At one point the sky breaks for a frame and turns bright green.
I prefer the original Alpha and Omega over any if it’s sequels. I mean it seemed like a “realistic/realistic wolf tale” thing. Instead, they added stuff about space and dinosaurs which ruined the entire concept

This movies so weird. It tries to appeal to the furry fanbase, and non furries at the same time...and ended up making a really bizarre version of alpha and omega. Or something.

"Arashi no Yuri Ni" or "We Met One Stormy Night" Is a 2d animated film that's a bit like this Where The wolves are wolves and sheep are sheep. It's about a wolf who takes refuge with a sheep one stormy night and the wolf struggles with fighting his instincts of eating his best friend. I remember it being pretty good!

I always feel that the biggest downfall of anthropomorphic animation is the lack of consistency in design. In every case I can think of the male characters are drawn as animals with human features, whereas the female characters are drawn as humans with animal features. Swat Kats is always my go to example for this. And as much as I loved the show, even as a child I noticed this & felt... suspicious. Whichever way you want to go, go all the way. Also, stop putting "breasts" on non-Mammalian creatures. I'm looking at you, XCOM.

It'd be funny if humans encountered a species of lizard people where half of them had big balloons on their chests, only to realize those with the balloons are male.
I always thought they had breast was because of the human dna introduced to them and it would be beneficial because it would make us more docile to them... basically they knew what they were doing when they put tits and curves on a sexy snek woman
Yeh, I never liked it when they humanoid an anthro characters face. It just always looks bad. Also, it always bugs me when people put breasts on Non mammal animals as well XD in fact, until recently it bugged me that they put human breasts on any anthro character.

Or that it was more simply a way of conveying how the prince john wanted the power to flaunt while lacking it in the first place, how a lion with no mane acted like the leader of the pack.
I LOVED THE SNOW QUEEN MOVIE (I also loved the story in general). I watched it tens and tens of times whenever I was sick, due to having a rough time with my immune system early on in my school career. That movie shaped me. I hated the main characters stupid little ferret thing though. I didn't know that it came from the same studio as this. Younger me would have definitely recommended it! (haven't watched it in forever :l I really should again).
I don't know about the art style necessarily being bad. In fact, 3D modeling work like that is VERY common in the community and it works for us. The problem seems to lie more in how that ultra-human appearance clashes with the story, while yes, if you think about it in the context of a germanic-irish war with humanoids it works, but with the soft anthro characters it doesn't really click the way it should on paper.
tbh one of the biggest flaws is how the wolf and sheep designs (and silhouettes) look SO SIMILAR to one another. unless you're paying close attention to their hands & feet, you cannot really tell them apart at first glance. Seems they were so focused on making the characters too appealing to notice or care. Zootopia did it right...
I think the best way to describe the problem with the character designs is the complete lack of consistency with mixing human and animal traits. In Zootopia, all the characters walked on two legs and had thumbs and expressive faces, but their physical proportions were similar to that of the animal they're based on- Nick Wilde, for example, has a humanoid shape but has a long torso and shorter legs than a human- if he went down on all fours he'd have the same proportions as an actual fox, more or less. The same applies to pretty much every other character in the film. Sheep and Wolves, on the other hand, are all over the place in terms of where they inserted human traits into an animal. The wolves are more humanoid while the sheep are less so, some have cartoonishly weird faces while some have eerily human-like faces (the sheep especially; some of them don't even have proper muzzles), some have digitigrade feet while others have plantigrade, and so on. The "sexy" female wolves are especially distracting, as they all have more or less the same face and body shape with little variance. Even their hairstyles are inconsistent- Some of them just have tufts of fur while others look like they're wearing wigs.
Omnywrench - bit random but that's always what really triggered me in zootopia, everything's pretty consistent with the anthropomorphic stuff..... except the elephants! They have elephant feet for hands! No fingers no thumbs nothing! And it's really weird when all the police officers are at their desks, _fingerless elephant present_ and Judy is sitting right next to a rhino that not only has fingers and opposable digits... *but human fingernails!!!* [visible confusion] Poor elephants drawing the short straw when getting humanoid anatomy.
I didn't realise the difference in feet until you brought it up, the other differences in anatomy are annoying or stupid to me... But I think the difference in feet is actually physically hurting me lol

Our animation not what bad. The main issue for now is lack of creativity and zero chances for new studios or even new animators to find work. But it is possible to create good film (at least form techincal side of view) even at Russia, and such good fur, hair and etc is normal and not something that stands out
I also like anthropomorphic movies because they can help soften the drama for kids movies. Nemo gets kidnapped, normally children getting kidnapped will be either raped, murdered, or maybe held for ransom, but since they are fish- we don't have to dance around those elements instead eliminate them entirely. It also creates more of a reason to enlist Dad as the hero, because there is no fish police to invade the human world. I also think it's helpful for kids to learn how to relate to others by putting them in the shoes of someone whose world is different from their own. "If I were a mouse, cats would be scary even though I think they're cuddly"
Technically Finding Nemo is an example of anthropomorphism by virtue of the fact that the fish are sentient and wear expressions that real fish can't. It's projecting human personalities on something nonhuman, ergo it's anthropomorphism.
huh, didn't consider that aspect, but that's a very good point. You can do so much more with non-humans because so many situations involving humans are tied to all this baggage that comes from our knowledge of how things work in our human society.

hair on furry characters is a divisive topic among furry artists actually, it's something I do with my characters, but I make their hair and fur color the same whereas some people I know make their hair look different. I couldn't watch this video without thinking about that argument of "well it looks weird on animals to have human hair" when it...really doesn't look that weird to me, or half the people making furry characters, especially for people who draw kemono style like I do.

i think the biggest problem with the movie is that the character designs contradict the story, when i look at the wolf characters they don't look like they would eat the sheep, and the should don't look like they would just passively take being eaten, there needs to be a balance, make the wolves look more menacing and an make the sheep look more timid, you can even still keep the more humanoid designs if the make the wolves teeth sharp and eyes more piercing, and make the sheep smaller and more puffy to make them look more defenseless

A&O 3 (The Great Wolf Games) is the most fun sequel to watch because of how obviously little effort went into it. At one point the sky breaks for a frame and turns bright green.

I always feel that the biggest downfall of anthropomorphic animation is the lack of consistency in design. In every case I can think of the male characters are drawn as animals with human features, whereas the female characters are drawn as humans with animal features. Swat Kats is always my go to example for this. And as much as I loved the show, even as a child I noticed this & felt... suspicious. Whichever way you want to go, go all the way. Also, stop putting "breasts" on non-Mammalian creatures. I'm looking at you, XCOM.

I LOVED THE SNOW QUEEN MOVIE (I also loved the story in general). I watched it tens and tens of times whenever I was sick, due to having a rough time with my immune system early on in my school career. That movie shaped me. I hated the main characters stupid little ferret thing though. I didn't know that it came from the same studio as this. Younger me would have definitely recommended it! (haven't watched it in forever :l I really should again).
I don't know about the art style necessarily being bad. In fact, 3D modeling work like that is VERY common in the community and it works for us. The problem seems to lie more in how that ultra-human appearance clashes with the story, while yes, if you think about it in the context of a germanic-irish war with humanoids it works, but with the soft anthro characters it doesn't really click the way it should on paper.

tbh one of the biggest flaws is how the wolf and sheep designs (and silhouettes) look SO SIMILAR to one another. unless you're paying close attention to their hands & feet, you cannot really tell them apart at first glance. Seems they were so focused on making the characters too appealing to notice or care. Zootopia did it right...
i mean one had a $150 million budget and the other was made for barely $3 million

You unlocked a memory that i wish you never unlocked. . . I watched that movie when i was younger and i liked the boy wolf...
I think the best way to describe the problem with the character designs is the complete lack of consistency with mixing human and animal traits. In Zootopia, all the characters walked on two legs and had thumbs and expressive faces, but their physical proportions were similar to that of the animal they're based on- Nick Wilde, for example, has a humanoid shape but has a long torso and shorter legs than a human- if he went down on all fours he'd have the same proportions as an actual fox, more or less. The same applies to pretty much every other character in the film.
Sheep and Wolves, on the other hand, are all over the place in terms of where they inserted human traits into an animal. The wolves are more humanoid while the sheep are less so, some have cartoonishly weird faces while some have eerily human-like faces (the sheep especially; some of them don't even have proper muzzles), some have digitigrade feet while others have plantigrade, and so on. The "sexy" female wolves are especially distracting, as they all have more or less the same face and body shape with little variance. Even their hairstyles are inconsistent- Some of them just have tufts of fur while others look like they're wearing wigs.
Omnywrench - bit random but that's always what really triggered me in zootopia, everything's pretty consistent with the anthropomorphic stuff..... except the elephants!
They have elephant feet for hands! No fingers no thumbs nothing!
And it's really weird when all the police officers are at their desks, _fingerless elephant present_ and Judy is sitting right next to a rhino that not only has fingers and opposable digits...

Our animation not what bad. The main issue for now is lack of creativity and zero chances for new studios or even new animators to find work. But it is possible to create good film (at least form techincal side of view) even at Russia, and such good fur, hair and etc is normal and not something that stands out
I randomly found Sheeps and Wolves on Hulu and I dont care what anyone says, I loved watching it.
I also like anthropomorphic movies because they can help soften the drama for kids movies. Nemo gets kidnapped, normally children getting kidnapped will be either raped, murdered, or maybe held for ransom, but since they are fish- we don't have to dance around those elements instead eliminate them entirely. It also creates more of a reason to enlist Dad as the hero, because there is no fish police to invade the human world.
I also think it's helpful for kids to learn how to relate to others by putting them in the shoes of someone whose world is different from their own. "If I were a mouse, cats would be scary even though I think they're cuddly"
Technically Finding Nemo is an example of anthropomorphism by virtue of the fact that the fish are sentient and wear expressions that real fish can't. It's projecting human personalities on something nonhuman, ergo it's anthropomorphism.

Snow queen was awsome- i grew up watching that. Its a lot more loyal to the grims brothers tale then frozen could ever get anyway-
