I disagree, this still has a slight cartoonish style going on, so it's not as creepy as it could be. Cats is going for as realistic as possible while using anthropomorphic characters, there's nothing redeeming there.
It's not that the Cats movie looks bad (on a technical level) but the fact that their faces look way too human and it doesn't mesh well if it is pasted on an otherwise anthropomorphic cat's body.

Most of the design for the characters are actually based on the actors that voiced them. For example the protagonist is voiced by Jamel Debouze who's really famous in France and they did the design to look like him
Beth Jenkins I mean it’s based off an actor who has a broken hand and hides it in a pocket but come on. You can motio. Capture the actors face but have a different mo cap actor for the body and movements
@@the-nina-beans88 This is just an assumption. Cause the whole "Oh I messed up my hand so I hide it." Put a glove on. There's been other celebrities with deformities that try to hide it. Usually a gimpy hand.
Jamel Debbouze completely lost the use of his right arm in a train accident. He said in a interview that he used to hide his arm (that is severely difforme) to not "disturb" people.
I think I saw him as the builder in Asterix: Mission Cleopatra and have been wondering why I never see his right hand... so that's the story 😧 I'm sorry about his accident but glad he survived it.
Well, they are Homo Habilis, and they are "too human" too, if we want to be precise... Since it literally is a humanoid looking animalistic (something intrinsecly scary for humans) you cannot have a not-creepy design.

It's a french humorist doing this character, and directing the movie. He was successful in the early 2000s... Didn't see the vid yet, maybe he speaks about this but it's a classic red flag about a movie low quality

@@Durendal1 Whoever wrote and directed this masterpiece of disaster must've been on strong LSD or were that "special" kid in movie class that liked Planet of The Apes a little too much.
Hello, as a French viewer who witnessed the film in its intended environment (and it’s very relevant) I thought I would a few information’s that you couldn’t have access to and that, in my opinion, are relevant whenever talking about this movie. Let’s start with the most important: Jamel Debbouze is not an actor (nowadays he could qualify as one, but his role is usually more of a star guest ), particularly at the time of the release of the movie the public knew him as a humorist, very popular one in France and in French-speaking countries. At the time of the release, he was rising and used as the selling point of the movie (his first time directing a movie!). His brand of humor is over-the-top, absurd with exaggerated and motions and a wacky way of speaking, which work great on a live scene but was translated poorly in the movie. The “nervous monkey” is also an homage to a famous French humorist of the 70’s ; Louis De Funes, whose trademark was exaggerated facial expression and a sardonic demeanor. I think that the main problem, they are not peoples playing characters, they are characters playing peoples. No arc because there is no need for an evolution of the character, we already know them. The sport part was because the same year as the release of the movie the French the football team lost whatever completion the public has its eyes on, whereas the handball team won so all the focus shifted to them! But even in the French version, the movie was not made to be successful for the long term, it is full of very specific time-related jokes so the fact that you view it years after it’s creations probably made it worse. It was basically a movie hoping for quick easy cash from the actor’s fame, nonetheless, it quickly flopped. A lot of information might not be totally right, and I might have skipped some things because honestly, I was not particularly invested in the context at the time but I think I gave a broad view of what was common knowledge at the time. It is still uncanny and bad, but I thought you could benefit from a little context. I can’t fathom how confusing it must have been without it. (Sorry if my english is a little wacky or smt .w.' )
So, some precisions. - It is not an "homage" to Jamel Debbouze, it is straight up self-insert. The guy just wanted to star in an animation movie and was hoping to ride on the wave of his (already declining) popularity in France. Hence why the motion capture choice - it was clearly advertised as "Debbouze in a prehistoric setting" and not "Debbouze giving his voice to a character". - The nervous monkey... is an abomination AND an insult to one of the greatest french comic actor of all time: Louis de Funès. He died in 1983, but they used captures of his old movies to put his face and his iconic grimaces on that monstruous abomination, pretending that THIS was an homage. Absolutely disgusting.
I think the « nervous monkey » as you call him, is a reference/hommage to one of the most famous french actor : Louis de Funès (due to his looking and his gesture) Edit: a bad hommage
Oh, the original idea was worse: the production team wanted the “nervous monkey” to be voiced by a reconstruction of Louis de Funès’ voice, a la Peter Cushing in Rogue One. The De Funès estate balked at the idea, so they got his son, a jet pilot, to model for the role and even give his voice in the French dub, for depressing results.
The whole thing about "you can't refer to what a character's actor is like IRL and expect people to get it on a global level" is pretty ironic for me. I'm French and you have no idea how many times I've seen references to American actors in shows and movies I watched as a kid that left me absolutely clueless until my adult years. If you ask me it's pretty funny to see US people get a taste of their own medicine for once.
I think what is most disturbing about the character designs (to me at least) is that some of them look very ape-like and others look too human in the face. Like... The main character and the dad and Thanos Kong do not look like they are part of the same species, let alone the same family. Edward looks nearly human, while the father and even Thanos Kong look basically like gorillas. Even if the main guy is meant to be "the" human ancestor, he should not look so human-like... especially when compared to his direct relatives. Hell, Edward compared to the witch monkey look like two completely different species. Like not even close. She is legit just a tall monkey. The other female apes like Lucy and the Karen-monkey are just... terrible. It's like they couldn't decide which route to go (human-like vs. ape-like), but they knew they had to make them "attractive" and it just totally did not work. Like... Idk. I think they tried to make Edward look more human to drive home the point of him being a human ancestor as well as make him more "endearing" to viewers... But they did it /really/ badly and it doesn't make sense when you look at the character's supposed father and brother. Evolution is not /that/ dramatic, folks.
I hate that women in animation are always designed to be as attractive to viewers as possible, often to the detriment of practicality, creativity, and the tolerability of a film's visuals (in this case especially).
The ones that look more like monkeys look ok to me but the human-like ones (and more humanoid faces) don't have any of the appeal animal characters have.
Fun fact: The part when the guy tries to eat his father is actually somehow accurate. Real life gorillas (it seems these... criatures are based on them for some reason) groom the body of their loved ones, meaning they technically eat part of it while doing so (mostly the eggs that the flies have put in it, but yeah XD)
The fact that The main character looks like someone I know; which doesn’t help that he’s basically naked here; makes this movie slightly awkward to me. And this is a great video.
I just realized that the origin of the girl monkeys name, Lucy, was the nickname of one of our ancestors, Lucy, discovered in 1974. Wow, what a funny pun, movie-
As a french dude, indeed. But France will hate animated features such as M.T.Z and Zombilenium because there aren’t any celebrities, and let that "thing" slide alongside ten thousand awful comedies...
I'm Dutch and Pathé is only known here as a movie theatre chain. Hearing they apparently made/produced/commissioned a movie themselves is super trippy. It's like if Wal-Mart suddenly published a video game.
gwammeh I thought they’re a major European film production / distribution company. They co-produced 127 hours (British Danny Boyle film); Chicken Run; Fifth Element; heaps of French animated movies and British drama. Didn’t know it was a Concern company.
Well as a french, that's true that they have movie theatres even in France in major cities. But for us, a lot of french movies came from this studio and that's not so weird. In my opinion, it's like a brand who have his own boutique but sell other brand's things too like a Sephora or smth else. They don't earn money only by making movies but also by broadcasting them and other. It's still in the movie industry. :)
They have been doing this since the dawn of cinema, but they have been trying to experiment on the animation front. Their last major animation effort before this monstrosity was a part-credit on Chicken Run.
18:20 "Just checking something" 😂😂😂 the whole hands in the pocket things feels like an intentional insult than actual homage. It definitely didn't need to be the entire film.
the actor is Jamel Debouse (Debouse is prenonced "dbooze" and he's really big here in france. His arm was mangled after getting caught in the tracks of a machine and ran over, he's a well respected and looked up to actor. Didn't he was in this film do.
saying which is worse, this or cats is equivalent of saying which smells worse, a cow manure pile or a rotting whale carcass. the answer is pretty obvious
Depends on how tolerate you are to certain things. If you're used to one of the two things, then it's not as bad. The other just leaves you sick and a horrible taste in your mouth.
To me Cats is far worse than this, this is bad but still cartoonish enough but Cats whit that human faces on cats body is the pure definition of uncanny wallet, I found someone saying that they have a fayri look, but to me they are totally uncomfortable to see, Cats would totally work fine like an animated film but we know that it would never goin to happen.
I reallyyyyy suggest you watch a movie called "A Monster In Paris" Its a French movie and its soooo good But sadly its really underrated I hope you have time to review on it! Btw i love your videos!
French Boi here Here are some interesting things about the director, Jamel Debbouze (Pronounced "Deubooz"). His fame peaked with his one-man shows and small-budget movies during the late 90's / early 2000's. He became famous mostly amongst middle-aged folks for his "quirky" humor style and his jokes which appealed to french people of the time. (Dad Jokes, Relatable everyday situations, Self-mockery, Racial / Community clichés, Mild political humor etc...) He never appealed to younger generations and is now branded as an "old people's comedian". He is known, like many french comedians of the time, for trying and failing hard to produce more youth-oriented content. When this movie was announced, I instantly knew how it was going to end up. What surprised me is how the son of one of France's most legendary comedian, (Olivier de Funès, son of Louis de Funès), actually participated in writing the scenario. But I guess his role was pretty minor, so he gets a pass.
So, in a nutshell, Animal Kingdom: Let's Go Ape gives motion capture a really bad name. Just as well I'd never heard of it before; motion capture's my favorite computer animation technique!
Hi from a french viewer ^^ What seemed interesting about this is that grey monkey (not the fat, the nervous) was basically a recreation of a french actor deceased several decenies before with the help of old footage and some kind of technology to recreate a 3d face using archive movie . And it was a movie with Debbouze, a french humorist who does the same thing since at least 15 years who stop being funny once you reach the age of 16 or maybe 17... Yeah, french peoples prefered to wait to find it online instead of wasting money... Noboy cared, few went to see it, it seems, and everybody forgot about it after like 2 month. (sorry for bad english... omellette au fromage)
In the original plan for this movie, if I can recall, they even tried to recreate his voice. And then Disney hired him to voice Timon in the French dub of the 2019 Lion King, because he is still “in” with the kids, I guess.
To be fair, exploding trees are a thing in Australia. Eucalyptus sap is flammable, so when there's a forest fire, the trees can explode. Speaking of the fires, they usually aren't started by natural causes, they're often manually started by birds of prey, who drop flaming branches into the grass to prey upon the small terrified animals fleeing from the flames and smoke. Exploding trees and sadistic raptors that start fires are just two of countless reasons that make Oz a deadly place.
I'm french and this movie terrified me as a kid 💀 but I never knew it was out for the rest of the world haha, and I didn't even recognize it with the thumbnail and the name (why did they change and censor the main storyline ????) And I never realized it could be seen as weird for the main character to have his hand in his pocket because he is literally just Jamel Debbouze playing himself lol. And he is iconic here so no one questioned it but yes i totally understand why it was weird for anyone that is not french lmao Anyways I watched this movie twice and never touched at it again because of how uncomfortable it was
@JAMES CLEVEN I love lucy has nothing to do with the song. and the life and work of comedian Lucille Ball predates the Beatles. as for why so many things get named after the song, well its a Beatles song. and the Beatles are a well known an influential rock band. their work is pretty ubiquitous. HOLY SHIT, I just realized that Pathe is the same company that worked with Ardman Animation on the movie Chicken Run. That spinning Pathe logo and rooster shadow are so damn nostalgic to me. It's so sad that a company that used to help create such a great film would be involved in THIS.
A lot of films are produced by the gaumont pathé groups in france They are also the owners of the largest number of movie theaters here Some are good But there's a lot of average basic things (the ton of french comedies each year, almost always the same plots and actors and cringe humor that isn't really funny since decades...) and some very bad Big companies funds a lot of movies so some are quite bad yeah

This movie’s visuals make Cats’ look Oscar worthy.
I disagree, this still has a slight cartoonish style going on, so it's not as creepy as it could be. Cats is going for as realistic as possible while using anthropomorphic characters, there's nothing redeeming there.
Nah du. Both of them are pieces of garbage

Very informative! Your English is fine, as well. Just makes sure you say “people” instead of “peoples” next time. :)
Wow merci j'allais écrire un commentaire du même genre ! ^^

@Forgotten Arctic Nah he already di- HE DIDN'T?
What about rataoing? Dont get me started with the cat. Friccing burn it!
@Forgotten Arctic Nope, and frankly im honestly scared to now.
AH, Louis de Funès. I KNEW I recognized that face...
Khaotil Holly......shit....wow.....
Wow , thank you so much for this information

The ape design In the movie
Makes me want to Reject Monke and Embrace Humanity
I think the « nervous monkey » as you call him, is a reference/hommage to one of the most famous french actor : Louis de Funès (due to his looking and his gesture)
Edit: a bad hommage
You said it brother!

The animator of Sonic mania being put onto the live sonic movie: "STAND BACK..... I can fix this..."
Evolution is not /that/ dramatic, folks.
aviperskiss Yeah he looks way too human. I think even if they had not made his body hairless that would have helped tremendously.
All of the god damn characters in this fuckin movie are mistakes. They’re all fucking monstrosities

Here are some interesting things about the director, Jamel Debbouze (Pronounced "Deubooz").
On peut classer jamel debbouze comme un "old people comedian" mais on peut pas lui enlever le fait quil soit toujours assez drôle rien que dans H ou asterix mission cleopatre ce nest pas nimporte quelle comédien desuet :)

Hi from a french viewer ^^
What seemed interesting about this is that grey monkey (not the fat, the nervous) was basically a recreation of a french actor deceased several decenies before with the help of old footage and some kind of technology to recreate a 3d face using archive movie .

Even the comments on this movie are knock offs of the Croods lol
Dunno how obvious it is, but i'm guessing Lucy is a reference to the missing link fossil that was named after the Beatles song.
I gess they made this because it could be funny because you know, french comedy...
HUZZAH, I wasnt the only one who picked up on that!
(even if it is overrated).
the Lucy homonid was named because that song was playing when she was discovered. the planet was named because its a cute gag.
"Pathé" is pronounced "Patei" (the h basically doesn't exist in French, except when it's with a c)
And it's a food thingy I guess
y tho
french needs to get a grip smh
I tend to pronounce things the way countries with a flag on the moon pronounce them.
@@As567na Just remove the "h" and there you have it : food ! Paté !
@@Ranstone Because of the solar radiations, the only flag currently on the moon is a white flag

HOLY SHIT, I just realized that Pathe is the same company that worked with Ardman Animation on the movie Chicken Run. That spinning Pathe logo and rooster shadow are so damn nostalgic to me. It's so sad that a company that used to help create such a great film would be involved in THIS.
A lot of films are produced by the gaumont pathé groups in france
They are also the owners of the largest number of movie theaters here
Some are good
But there's a lot of average basic things (the ton of french comedies each year, almost always the same plots and actors and cringe humor that isn't really funny since decades...) and some very bad
Big companies funds a lot of movies so some are quite bad yeah
TheDracoChick I hated that movie
