Progress on the sheep wagon continues! I rebuilt the grub box (supply box) and so today I'm taking you along while I forge a simple latch for it out of a rasp, a piece of angle iron, a rivet and chunk of flat iron. My kids help out in the shop and at the end I give an update on the rest of the project and also give you a quick peek at our newborn lambs.

Hi, I'm Jayce, the blacksmith behind Farmstead Forge. I am a farrier by trade; I learned the basics of blacksmithing at shoeing school and the rest I learned on my own. I'm excited to expand my knowledge and continue learning while also sharing my passion with others.
Join me in the shop on my Montana farmstead where I enjoy building tools and other fun projects that we can use around the place.

Glad you are continuing to make these videos, I really enjoy watching them.
Thank you, I appreciate it!
Your helpers are a real joy!
Thank you!
This video is a good example on how you show us a very nice blacksmithing project integrated on your homestead day to day chores. And at the same time you educate your children. Much more interesting than making a blacksmithing video exclusively to get views on YT.
Thank you, it was a very enjoyable project for me as well.
I’m remodeling our chicken coop, and had to replace the doors and hardware. Now I know how I’m going to do the latches. Thanks for the inspiration! Your kids are really cute.
That's awesome! I'm glad it gave you an idea. Thanks!
❤Love your Repurposing - Waste Not, Want Not! 👍
We reuse about everything we possibly can around here!
Simple but yet useful, Love the "use what you have".
Thank you!
I like your sheep wagon project and it looks like you have plenty of little helpers as well 😊. I like seeing that. Keep up the good work and God bless you and your family.
Thank you! I have had a lot of fun with this project this winter. We really enjoy taking a piece of forgotten history and breathing some new life into it! I'm very blessed with good help. Thanks for watching!
Great video latch looks perfect on the wagon. I enjoyed that spill made me feel at home thanks for bringing us along for the ride
Thanks! Haha yes that spill really took me by surprise!
Great video. I liked the look of that old unusual shoeing tool box . “Lolipop” looks like he’s a star kid.
Thanks Jayce for sharing some of your knowledge.
Lol the place I get my shoeing supplies from always sends little suckers with my orders. Sometimes my kids about have my order tore open before I even get home! Thanks for watching.
Turned on YT this AM and saw your notification!! Great latch! Updates on the wagon are coming along and look spot on! Great to see you have your next crew of apprentices at work! Good to see this post and keep the course! Nice work!!
Thanks Bob, I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Love the latch using the Rasp, Love the look. Great helpers, starting early on there learnen. The wagon is coming along great. Thanks Jayce for sharing.
Thanks! Sometimes three is almost too much help 😉

To be honest I never realized herders lived in these things with their heard. Big sky country farming is a lot different from back east.
Ya! Sometimes they just used them in the summer time when they summered the sheep in the mountains, but other ranches used them for their herders year around.
..i like how you used the tang for a finger hold. Well done sir...
Thank you! Although I can't take credit for that idea because that's how the old stall latch was made that inspired this hook...but it does work out perfect!
Always enjoy your videos Jase, whatever content it may be. Really liked the idea for the latch, turned out great. Looks the part.
Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed it and thank you for watching!
Sheep are looking good and so is that hand forged latch Jayce. Your daughter did an excellent job nailing that door together, not an easy task! My dad says the same thing to me about power tools, if the old timers had them they would've used them haha. Happy Tuesday buddy!
Thanks Danny! I did pre-drill and screw the door together in a few spots to help hold it together for her, then took the screws out when she was all done. Thanks for stopping by, have a good week!
Jayce, you've got some awesome kids! Have a great week as well!
Great video!!! I enjoy your period correct approach.
Thank you! It is challenging because this wagon has gone through a lot of changes through the different time periods over the years.
Handsome latch!
Interesting about them stashing lambs in there, I didn’t know that sheep wagon tidbit.
The place I work for long ago used to run a lot of sheep, so there are bundles and bundles of ‘sheep tent’ frames, which are simple steel frames with loops twisted into them in places, so that the frame could be driven in the ground and a canvas cover tied over it, and a fresh lamb and mother stashed inside. I’ve been using them as a supply of round stock, before they rust back into the earth 😂
Oh that's very interesting, I've heard of them but I didn't know how they worked. I figured they were like a tipi tent with just a pole in the middle. I've spent many a night in a tipi tent when I was packing mules in the Bob Marshall. Thanks for watching!
@@FarmsteadForge these are 4 legs, linked at one end by being formed into rings, with 1 ring going through the other 3, then a ring about 4 inches from the far end as a tie-off, and kind of a bend partway to the peak, so as far as I can tell, it would make a square mini wall tent but with a hip-roof shape.
I would be interested in seeing what's in the box. Thank you
At the moment the only thing in it is a pipe running through it where the original rod for the brake went through when it was a horse drawn wagon.
Nicely done! I'm envious of your supply of old rasps, but not the work you do to get them!
Some days I don't enjoy what I have to do to get them either 😂
Like the latch mate , I recon they will look grate on my old trailer I'm restoring , Thank you for sharing cheers . 🤔👍👌🤠
Thanks! What kind of trailer are you restoring?
