Stack Welded Broom Hanger for the Sheepwagon

  • In this video I continue forging hardware for the sheepwagon. Today I forge a hanger for the broom which traditionally hung outside the door. I forge a whale tail and a ring and then stack weld them, basically welding three separate pieces. It turns out to be a fairly tricky weld because of the small size of the components. You'll also catch a rare moment in this video when metals of the same temperature will weld themselves without being tapped on.

That moment it welded just from contact was amazing! It made me remember either reading or hearing in a video someone said a way to learn how to recognize welding temperatures is to put two long rods in the forge, and periodically tap the hot ends together in the forge, and at welding temps you will feel them be ‘sticky’. Something I need to try once I get my new blower on my forge!
    Here’s one for you:
I picked up a cheep silicone basting brush at the dollar store, and use it to brush on my pastewax and oil finishes on hot metalwork. Saves on burning up cheep paintbrushes, and does not get little bits of blue lint in the crevices, the way blue shop towels do!

Ya for sure, when you feel them stick they really stick, it is pretty cool.
That's an awesome tip with the brushes, I'll definitely try it some time!

Man you like these difficult forge welds lately lol I give you props though it came out nice! I'm really liking the theme you have going on with this project! Have a fun week!

Thanks! It's nothing too new though, I've jump welded a lot of frog plates and bar shoes so I've had a lot of practice, but doing it on the sheepwagon has been more fun! I hope you have a good week too!

I cheat and use a little stick welder to put bars and frog plates in lol. Mainly cause I don't want to replace my liner lol But I've got some practicing to do to catch up to you forge welding!

Very nice forge welding! Gotta love that Iron Mountain. Also, nice demonstration that one can, in fact, use the horn to make a nice circle, you don't NEED a cone mandrel. (Nice to have, though.)

Ya Iron Mountain is the best!! I actually just built a cone mandrel this last year but I never remember to use it because I have been using my horn for so long. Thanks for watching!

Good stuff, well caught seeing and pointing out the "instaweld" temperature ...it adds a nice touch to your videos and editing.
    thanks for sharing

..Great job on the weld and it turned out good. Any broom would be proud to be in it...

You're not forging if you don't drop something at least once! 😂

great vid and a lovely result.
question, would it be better to make it out of one piece, where you form the circle have the length of the bar longer so it can cross over at the forge weld and those two trailing ends form the rest of the mount section

    • @FarmsteadForge
      @FarmsteadForge  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

Yes you could definitely do that! The reason I chose not to do that is because I did that in a previous video and I just wanted to do something a little different. Thanks for watching!

That was a lot on metal to weld at once. Nice outcome.
