I just got all my basic blacksmithing supplies this week, and somehow stumbled on your channel after seeing a bunch of over complicated, and expensive, designs for power hammers and treadle hammers.
As a dude who has no skills when it comes to metalworking, never touched a welder... this is slightly daunting but feels doable with a bit of practice and prep unlike all the other things I've seen. It also seems somewhat affordable, whereas most the others i have seen are costly enough you might as well save a little bit more and buy one.
You may not have many subscribers/viewers, but your teaching style is better than most of the other blacksmithing pages with far more views/subs. I hope in the future (probably at least a year or two) I will build myself something like this.

Dude, this is a boss idea. I am inspired to dig through the junk pile and build one.

You might want to present this to a local community college as a potential project for a CAD student.

..Like you i intend to use it for tooling, punching and fullering, more than drawing out. Still a Great design. Thanks for answering questions from folks...!

Great video and update information. On my end I have to date used the guillotine variant I built for one brief test session with very good results. It's fantastic for punching and drifting work with the flats and the fullers for me do draw out quite well. One minor issue I may tweak is the sprigs I'm using are a bit too stiff. Basically they become stronger than I am at about a 7" stretched length so I think the machine actually slows during the final 3" of travel. I'm getting about the effect of a 2.5 lb hammer per blow with a 55lb head. Upside, it's effortless on the rebound, actually lifts my leg to the start position with ease so it cycles very fast. I have some softer spring to try out in the near future.
At the time I only had a pair of fuller dies and flat plates but have since gone and built some other fun ones. My favourite and as of yet untested one is a auto body tool with quick change hex shanked dies which I welded into my standard 1.25" square tubing so you can do quick changes to different patterns even during one heat if needed.
The screw based vertical height change is working great, have used it a few times during the test session with easy fine adjustment and no effort at all. Didn't even have to adjust the front foot bar as it just rose with the head and didn't get too out of position for use.
I took a well needed detour and went about organizing the shop for the past week, building racks for the tooling, moving around tools, cleaning up piles of accumulated stuff and getting the shop ready to properly resume efficient use.
I'd be happy to send a couple of pictures of the not quite finished machine but not sure how to do that on TH-cam. I'll probably post a video at some point and just put it in chat but I'm not a avid TH-cam poster.
As for Patents, as soon as you posted your video you made the tech public domain, you have to do that before posting. As mine is fairly close on design to yours only the height adjustment component is patentable and It's not really worth it to me to go down that road so I'm leaning on the public domain angle too.

Forgot to mention, this design can be retrofit with a pneumatic ram to make it air powered, it's actually one of the reasons I picked this design to build. Could be something the retired vet you referenced could try if leg work is too much.

I think this a great design. I am a full time blacksmith. My wife is very capable with CAD drawings.
I have a CNC plasma machine and CNC 3 axis gantry mill.
I would be interested in making these to sell but don't want to steal your idea.
Maybe we can work something out.
    Let me know.

I am planning to build a version of the guillotine hammer and make a video about it. It is a good design idea...

One off topic question I noticed your shop is kinda like a carport type step up what one are you using and how's it holding up over all currently in a 10x10 shop wanted to expand on a budget so was looking into that sort of option

My workspace is a couple 20' x 10' carport tents side by side. They hold up alright. But one of the door sippers gave up the other day. Got them from Costco. They offer replacement tops but not doors unfortunately. It is still fully enclosed and it's not bad for $250 a tent. Especially because I got the first one for free from family.

I did up a tech video of my version of your machine. There are two more videos on my account showing the level of drag on the head and a quick test session video. Hope this explains how the height adjustment change was made.
