    I actually think that using light angle iron for the treadle frame its a good idea, cause if you use heavy stuff, you are to cause more damage to your legs. I have build 2 treadle hammer, one like this the "Oliver style" and one bassed on Clay spencer "In line hammer". For the Oliver one i've use light angle iron for the treadle, and its has hold up pretty well. For the In line i've came up with a simple desing of a shock absorber for the treadle, and it made a huge diference, it made the machine much more plesant to use.

    Are the rollers really that necessary for these things? Do the tires being repaired frequently have a continuous set of holes throughout the perimeter that need to be patched? Or is the reason for it because it's unknown where the hole is, and this allows it to be spun around easily in search of the hole?

    • @FarmsteadForge
      @FarmsteadForge 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Not necessary, but it makes it a lot nicer especially if you are using a pick to dig gravel or a nail out of the hole, you can move it around as needed.

    If you need more clearance for larger stock, remove the bottom die and put a 1/4” cap over the anvil. I have punched 3” square 4150 many times under my tire hammer. Also if you’re working thinner material like knife stock or thin plate, cut a 1/4” plate with the same footprint as the bottom die. This raises the bottom die and grants more control on thinner material, just make sure to look into longer bolts as the die rises. I use a machine like this (heavier anvil/ram) but they are decent power hammers and they are adjustable

    Great video! Just received my Daddy- inlaws Blacksmiths leg vise and looking to restore it. Missing the thrust washer and needs a little adjustment on the spring to push open jaws. I'll have to try to locate a Blacksmith to make me one or go to the Amish in Tennessee and see if they make me one. As I'm here in Alabama. Vise you have looks identical to the one i have but mine has the corner built up about an inch to hold small stuff and I've not seen one like it. May have been something Daddy in Law added. As he was a Blacksmith.

      I've never seen one like that but a lot of tools are modified to suit ones personal use. Good luck getting it restored, if you are ever in Central Montana you could drop it by and I'd be happy to fix it for you!

      Thank you, I appreciate that. The tong videos are my favorite to make but also the most time consuming.

    Fantastic video, Thank you, it's always a big help to see how tools should actually be put together.
