13 Sentinels belongs on more lists like this. It truly is an unbelievable game. Also shoutout to the kingdom building in Ni No Kuni 2 lol. I got wrapped up in that as well.
Yeah, it's an incredible game. I was sad that it was completely overlooked initially, but at least with Switch release it has become Vanillaware's best selling game. Still I hope even more people will eventually give it a try
SaGa Scarlet Grace has to be my favorite modern RPG. It's easily the best turn based battle mechanics I've played. How you have to budget your actions across your party every turn, and turn order matters beyond out speeding enemies and killing them before they get an action, and some of the best usages of counter attacks I've seen.
Three Houses is the only Fire Emblem I ever enjoyed and stuck with. I hope the next one made is more like it. Xenoblade 3 is one of my favorite single player games of all time.
Honkai Star Rail. I didn’t expect to like it as much as I do but man that’s a fun one. I’m with you on everything you’ve said about Nier Automata. That game is superb. Great List!
Great video was always. And yeah we're in a second JRPG renaissance. The first one was SNES-PS2 and now this one has lasted at least a couple of years. 2022 and 2023 were gangbusters for JRPGs and 2024 looks to be even more so.
Think you slept on Yakuza Like a Dragon, extremely with with the sequel coming out on the 26th of Jan. SMT 5 should be up there also, sadly should have been on more than the Switch. There are four on the list I can not put in my top 20 of the last 10 years, which are Persona 5, FE: 3H, Nier, or FF7: R. Most of this is not a fan of daily life (want to max my characters without a guide) or combat is a bit more Souls like than I want. We all have reasons to like what we like though.
I see some giving you a hard time about honkai. It's similar to when I have said final fantasy 14 was a great rpg you can just play on your own and others say it doesn't count smh. People can be surprisingly close minded sometimes.
It's hard to actually make a best rpg list because they are so long and it's unlikely you have played all the good ones. I know I haven't lol. With that said, nice list. There are some games I have played that you probably haven't that I would put on my list, like octopath 2, but it's still a fine list. Nothing I would say I cant believe you've done this towards.
Thanks for the kind words! I have played Octopath 2 and I have it on some of my other lists. It’s actually my favorite JRPG of last year. I feel that it really prides itself on its take on classic JRPG mechanics though so I left it off the Modern JRPG list. I love it though, it’s an amazing game!

To be fair it’s an extremely popular modern RPG. He said he’s not a fan of these types of games and I’m not either but to be fair, this game did hook me in for a bit. Gacha stuff aside the games pretty fun.
@Gamesrcool that's cool. none of that is a justification for it being one a best modern jrpg list. It's so bizarrely and glaringly out of place on this list. If anything his comments about not really loving it make it even more out of place.
@@FullMetalB he mentioned that the game itself like the moment to moment gameplay hooked him in and it did surprisingly for me as well. And I’d argue that it does belong on the list because it’s the creators list, is it not?
Yes, it's a gacha game, but to be fair, I couldn't stand how stupid Tails of Arise and some of the other games on this list looks and plays. Star Rail on the other hand, has great visuals and animation, very interesting battle system focused on buffs/debuffs with elemental damage and status effects, interesting story and a lot more. If it wasn't a gacha game, I'm pretty sure it would've been one of the most popular JRPGs.

I think XC 3 is the best overall Xenoblade game. The original has the best story though I think.
