      To be fair, back in the day people were just much more trusting. It's not like there were easy methods of communication with childrens' parents, people took others at their word far more often. Unfortunate.

    • @escay8434
      @escay8434 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BartimaeusTrilogyFan I am not disagreeing, however the explantion given should have raised red flags. Why take one child and not the other of there was a need to pick the children up? 🙄 This is especially the case when the individual had so little knowledge about the child he was supposed to pick up so she basically had to feed him information. What if the children were the same size? What next would he have asked for to distinguish between the two girls? Her own alarm bells even started going off hence his need to tell her she could call the Bank.
      Taking all the facts together, while i know long ago people may have been more trusting, that explanation is wholly insufficient in these circumstances.

      The registrar may not have been the brightest bulb in the chandelier - it certainly sounds that way.
      However, in her defence, her training and instructions for the position she held may not have covered that situation. We think of a lot of people who lived 100 years ago as being more innocent and less worldly than us, whether or not that is true is open to debate but, regardless of the era, there are some people who are naturally naïve and overly trusting. At that time, men tended to be viewed as having an automatic authority, simply because they were men.
      I suppose that, at the end of the trial and with all the newspaper reporting, the registrar probably realised that she had enabled a truly horrendous crime, that would be a hard burden to bear.

      There was a case several years ago where the little boy went missing after his great aunt picked him up from school. They soon established it wasn't his great aunt and it turned out it was his father's second wife who is jealous of him spending time with the little boy. She got a friend to dress up like an old woman telling the friend she was only going to scare the little boy and while they were driving down the road pulled him in the back seat where she was hidden under a quilt and strangled him. She didn't tell her friend well you're involved as well and made her help her hide the body. What I thought was a travesty of justice is the woman that killed him didn't do that long of a sentence and got paroled after about 10 or so years for good behavior and perhaps due to the fact she was pregnant when she committed the murder. After that they had very strict rules at the school about identifying the person who is picking the child up and they had to show proper ID. A girl I used to date was tell me how her niece went down to pick her younger sister up when time from school and the teacher would not allow it because she was not on a list or something like that. The older sister chewed out the teacher and then when their mother came down there she also chewed the teacher out. I told idiot I was dating I said they have to have certain rules and regulations what if someone a relative came down picked up some nice child started drinking on the way home and wrecked and the child was killed then the family could hold the school liable for releasing the child in that person's custody. It fell on deaf ears the whole bunch was not the brightest.

      @@thomasswafford250
      Yes, my daughter is in her late 30s and when she started in preschool, they had recently put into place protocol where the only person allowed to pick up the child was the custodial parent of record. Only that parent could designate other people to be authorized to collect children, whether during the school day or after school. This meant even a parent could not pick up a child if he/she was not the custodial parent and had not been authorized by the actual custodial parent. There had been a huge problem with kidnappings by non-custodial parents across the country in addition to the few stranger abductions carried out this way. By the time she was in 2nd grade, school doors were locked and entry could only be attained through the front office and they were very diligent. So they've been in place for a long time now - she's about to turn 39...

    For anyone needing the particulars:
    "On October 19, 1928, Hickman was hanged on the gallows in San Quentin Prison. Upon falling through the trap doors of the gallows, he struck his head and hung, "violently twitching and jerking." Per witnesses, it took approximately two minutes for Hickman to die. An autopsy performed after his execution showed that Hickman's neck did not break during the hanging, and that he had died from asphyxia."
    He deserved it and then some.
    What kind of monster does this?

    My grandparents arrived in Los Angeles, California in 1920s. My mother was born around the time of the murder but this the first time I have heard of this case! What a truly horrific crime!! You would think that woman at the school would have been extremely suspicious that he only asked for only one of the two twins with such a story of the father being in a serious accident! During that time, there wasn't the fear of criminal activity as now but still what a stupid decision --- not even calling to make sure 😢 Thank you, BC for and well researched a present story!! 👏

    If what the killer said later was true, that he strangled Marion because she recognised him from her visits to the bank with her father then perhaps if the school registrar had sent Marjorie then she would not have recognised him and might have survived, being exchanged alive for the ransom...?
