Instead of burning your mismatched stands, how about adding an inexpensive tank & set up, then donating them to a classroom, or to a bedridden/ handicapped child or adult to enjoy? Could some stains and sealants be dangerous when burned? BTW- Matt, you are an INCREDIBLE addition to this channel! I love watching and listening to you guys! Cheers from 🇺🇲➡️🇬🇧✌🏻❤🙏🏻🎉

Just a thought on the Emperor's. Could it been from a sudden temperature change?
As that tank appears to often get a lot of direct sunlight (unless if it's just the time of day you happen to film it but in a lot of videos it's getting direct sun). And you noted you had recently been getting a lot of low sun the last week.
In the summer yes it was getting a lot of sun but because it was getting more sun consistently the temperature of the tank is less likely to cool back down to the room temperature. Basically because it was constantly getting blasted it kept the temperature higher but still more consistent.
But as it went a period of getting less sun then it would if cooled back down to room temperature and stayed at that temp for a few weeks then all if a sudden get a load of sun again causing a dramatic temperature increase.
With the dramatic temperature increase it could either been the temp change itself, reduced oxygen in the water or both which lead to them getting stressed.
Then them being a tank strain/more inbred fish making them more susceptible to stress/illness it could of either triggered the Angelfish carrying theory (though personally I still don't think that's the most likely cause).
Or if water temp was suddenly spiked and stressed them out it can cause fish to shed their slime coat causing their skin to be valnurable & stress them out even more making them at risk of bacterial infections (plus at higher water temp the bacteria can multiply extremely quickly).
With them being more delicate then the other inhabitants it would make sense for them to be the only ones affected where the others could cope better with the change in conditions.
I'd personally give that more consideration/investigation then assume the Angelfish being the cause.
Just given you had those Angelfish a long time, the other Tetra's being fine in the tank they were previously in plus while being more delicate they're hardy enough to regularly sold in shops and kept in tanks with other species and the same water systems as many others.

Heres a thought, why don’t you source one or two amazing antique Victorian, Art Nouveau or Art Deco aquariums/vivariums to mix up the tank room style a bit? I have two really interesting antique aquariums; one being a 40-ish gal Art Nouveau rectangular tank with a bronze egret statue in each corner. The other is a large 125-ish gal octagonal tank with a center “island” that includes a cool bullfrog fountain. I purchased them a while ago and had to refurbish both a bit but they’re museum quality and well worth it. If I was able to find these beauties within a 100-mile radius of NYC you should have very little trouble locating amazing antique tanks in Europe simply because it’s waaay older than the US. Ive actually seen a few spectacular ones at estate auctions in London and Paris. The octagonal tank was actually available through a (Sears & Roebuck?) mail-order catalogue up until the early 1900s, a fact which blew my mind! Just a thought...
Oh, a YT video exists of someone with the same octagonal tank up & running. The dude has IMMENSE angelfish, discus and -believe it or not approx a dozen mixed male & female bettas (that get along.) The owner cites the shape of the tank, the fact that it’s heavily planted (& has dither fish) as the reason.

Another great video, I really love the 'banter' between the pair of you, lol. As for the 10ft tank, instead of going for large fish (which is a great idea anyway) how about doing a HUGE micro eco-system for multiple sized fish. Having that amount of room in the tank could easily replicate a traverse section of a S.American habitat, heavily planted c/w bogwood/mangrove swamp at one end running into a flat sanded bottom at the other end with maybe a small island of giant val in it. The tetras would love the darker planted end (just like in the wild), then the dwarf cichlids banking out from there and finally the bigger cichlids in the open section, it would make for a great show piece for the studio. 3ft of something like the 'red Devil' tank (heavily wooded for the tets) leading out into 7ft of open sand, stones and the occassional val would look breath taking. Anyhow, no matter what you decide to ultimately do I'm sure it'll look great !

I was just thinking the same thing, that would look absolutely awesome. and if you later on want to do 5 ft tanks you could always make a divider and put in the middle.
But the 10 ft tank with what you described would be breathtaking and I really hope that they will do something like that

I haven't been watching long, four days I think :), but I am enjoying the videos. This video sparked a memory. My tank had been set up for over a year and was completely healthy both fish and plants. I bought two Angels from my local Maidenhead Aquatics and put them in the tank. Next day two fish were dead, during the day another two. I noticed white patches across their backs. I have kept fish for sixty years so I recognised White Saddle Back (Columnaris disease). I dived down to my local Pets At Home, it was closest, and got treatment and added it. The Two Angels died but I saved the rest of the fish in the tank. Lesson learned and I have set up an old tank I had and now use it as a quarantine tank. Four years on and the fish left are still thriving :)

The tetras you lost weren't Emperor tetras (Nematobrycon palmeri) they were Royal / Kerri tetra (Inpaichthys kerri). They're an absolute pain for bacterial infections like matt said namely columnaris or aeromonas/ pseudomonas strains which can wipe tanks out as quickly as you've experienced. After acclimating or adding new stock to tanks with these I'd recommend a course of water life myaxzin to try avoid this issue. Acriflavin on its own can be effective too. Just a thought, tho, was this tank the one that gets no water changes, could have also been a KH crash causing the PH to crash?

Be careful if that is a plastic lid Matt put on the reef tanks. Plastic will block the UV light that some corals need. I think Serpa even had the same problem setting up his big reef tank. Glass lids won’t block the UV light.

That’s right Serpa design lost all his corals because of the plastic lid but what he used wasn’t clear he uses that material on his reptiles enclosures built as well if I’m not mistaken I think he made a lid out of clear acrylic

It is always a good habit to treat the fish first that will be introduced to an established tank with existing community. Even if the fish came from another established tank so you can lessen the cross contamination issues. It will not eliminate it totally but it can lessen. It happens to a lot of keepers and is still disheartening everytime.

As usual great video. However can I tell you how many times my tank has been affected by adding new fish? My recent infection was exactly what you experienced but I didn’t have the severe loss that you did. The reason I’m talking about this is because I was thinking about quitting because I thought I did something wrong. Watching this video made me feel better. If it can happen to you guys then I feel like I’m doing ok. Hope that makes sense. Thanks for your honesty.

Sorry to hear about your tetra loss. I had something similar happened when I moved a plant from one tank to another. One of my harlequins got an infection, I treated the fish for 3 days before putting him back in the tank and he still died. Even if you would have caught the infection, not sure anything could have been done to stop the loss.

One thing you might have done, and for the future, is to dose the tank your moving the fish to.
A single dose of antibiotic in sufficient proportion to the water column may be enough.
    Consider it prophylaxis.

How would you get a 10' tank in the room? Most 10ft are 120"x36"x48 well over 1200 pounds glass or 600 pounds acrylic. will it fit through the door?

I would absolutely love to have all that green water to feed to my freshwater clams and muscles. They would clean it up in a little bit of no time.
I'm really glad you share the failures with us. While it is sad to hear of a mass die-off, we learn (and you also learn) from the mistakes. It would be fantastic if there were some sort of way by which we could share all our mistakes and problems with you and your audience so that we could all learn even more, but neither time nor the technology currently available permits it.
Can't wait to see how that tiger lotus turns out. Next you'll have to try Victoria lilies. In a nano tank.

I had a similar thing happened in one of my 15 gallons but with celestial pearl danios as opposed to purple emperor tetras. I have amano shrimps, otocinclus (they even had babies twice now), red phantom tetras in there, they are all fine and thriving, so are the plants. But my CPDs are more fragile. I lost a couple, got new ones so that I always have a group of 8 but usually only half of the new batch makes it. They turn up dead exactly like you experienced. One day they're fine, the next they die and look patchy. My tank is almost a year old, my parameters are stable, I do 25% water changes every week. There must be a type of normally occurring bacteria in my tank(s) that CPDs are more sensitive to. I have a total of 3 tanks with shrimps in all of them and it's really only the CPDs that seem affected.
