What if you took a few tanks and placed them on the top rack, then scaped them to be like a flowing river with the wood looking like it flows through all of the tanks. Just an idea, and I would be greatful if you even considered it
Sooooooo glad you've screwed the panels to the boards!
Using the screws to hold the light up was genius!!!
Please, please, please water your plants with the used fish tank water, they love it
I was also thinking this! 💪🏻 ::: PS love the content! I’d love to see a big predator tank 😍
we are on it now. Dont worry 👍👍
@@chaoticheaven17 yeah being fixed currently
Thank you. I said that a couple weeks ago lol. ❤
Nice work, looks awesome. Love to see the bild completed.
This is the start of an EPIC BUILD!
MD / Fish shop Matt partnership is a massive WIN! 🤪✌️💜
Mad respect for how you treat your employee. Being human to employees (and friends) pays dividends, and I’m sure Matt is elated to have his weekends free. The start of a long and prosperous working friendship.
this is much more like a partnership
Helps they were already good friends.
lol
Much respect for family time! If anyone, for some reason, doubts your love of the hobby - your early AM Saturdays & Sundays! Way to go guys! Love it!
18 tanks and then the top rack. You risk crushing the part of the wooden beams that are under the blocks. Moreover, we have the beam joints (read weakest region) coming under the blocks which will slowly start crushing the edges of the beams due to the load over time. Also, since the block is uneven, the weight distribution will be uneven on the points of contact between the blocks and the wooden beams.
Going to stop my ramble. Love love love your work MD and Matt! Excited to see the studio change and morph. As Matt would say "change is the only constant"
6:45 has to be your most David Brent moment yet MD haha. Really enjoying seeing the progress you're making - the vlog style videos are great.
its always fun when matt is around. keep up the good work guys
Gents, as the 2x4's dry out, they will all move/bow/cup individually. The 1/2 or 3/4 ply, whatever you used is not rigid enough to stop that, and you may find tanks being out of level within the next 6 months. May I suggest blocking them together? Cut a bunch of 4-6" blocks out of another 2x4 and screw them into each length. It not only will strengthen it, but will keep the 2x4s from shifting as much since there is more force keeping them from sagging or bowing .
agreed, the sag alone before that even happens is too much if those are four approx. 20 gallon tanks spaced out on each shelf. looking at 0.5 to 0.75 inch sag, if they dont just outright fail, the bowing/cup will cause issues for the rimless tanks, the ply wont make a difference when the whole shelf is sagging that much. this is not a good shelf system and I worry about it short term, let alone long term and its ability to hold up.
Yes!!!! I thought I was missing something but it seems like the 2x4s are just laying there.
I can't wait to see how it all turns out but I am even more impressed with how thoughtful you are in helping Matt to have a great work life balance as well as your your consideration for your family. It's truly important to spend quality time with your wife and kids, so good on you mate!
You don't have to cut so much from the video.. LOVE watching y'all work (or play) together 🥰
It might be a good investment to get a small trailer when you're hauling tanks and the concrete blocks. You'd be able to haul a lot more and also wouldn't destroy your cars lol
I would paint the cinder blocks black as well. It would look more cohesive and tidy.
I'm a very nervous person so I would have made the bottom central pillar bigger, alternating stacking the blocks length and witdh-wise (iterrible explanation, but hopefully it makes sense). Because currently that central pile looks like an unfortunately stubbed toe away from having all of it collapse.
Once they get the tanks in and filled up the weight of everything wont allow any of the blocks to move
Dammit i love you two. I love the banter i love the random shopping vlogs. Please please do more of these longer videos guys please please . You bring me so much joy and so many smiles. Loving the racking it looks awesome.❤
Much love as aleays to you all
Katrina, Watchet. X
What a load of work! But so worth it! That's going to look epic once it's all done and filled with tanks and water and plants and fishies and everything!😄You guys are just powering along so well! Oh, also, October usually means harvest time so that may explain your tractor woes😁
Absolutely loved this episode. I found you guys by accident. My father and I kept fish when I was a boy, many years ago (swordtails, mostly). We actually built two three foot (about one meter) aquariums ourselves. Currently, I do not have a fish setup, but I am completely enjoying this channel, and I love watching the relationship you and Matt have as you develop the studio. Keep it up!!
You definitely need a company truck or van it would make life so much easier. 🐠🐠🐠🐠🐠
You two are giving me Pat & Mat vibes every video! 😊
Matt is just 5 stars. He seems to be one of the nicest and fun friends one can have. Enjoy your videos ! keep them coming. Thanks
Jeff's little overbite is so darn cute. 🥰
Can't wait to see this with FISH, Luv from Sri Lanka
Really cool and simple to build system. Well done! Maybe you should think of acquiring a small trailer for transporting stuff like building materials and big fish tanks. 🙃😉
Delivery 🚚
Definite bog wood, or some kind of wood in the middle, up the top. Great idea Matt 👍
I thoroughly enjoy watching your videos. The two of you have inspired me to build a tank corner... not quite enough tanks for a room, but too many to simply be a wall. 😅 Any how to videos on setting up automation with regard to maintenance would be fantastic. Thanks again for another great MD/FTM episode.
I’ve been dying for this video ! I love that you guys are working together now, now we get both logistics and brawn ! Haha love you both
And the random banter omg I love it and we need more shopping videos lol.
I am actually so excited for this I got something in my eyes at the end of the video when Matt was all in on getting a layer more.. Can't wait to see the end result.
These two warm my heart ❤️
Love the new rack system. Maximises the space as I was worried you had already outgrown it but I was wrong. It looks mega
Set a work planner on a white board everything you see that needs to be done then cross them off as you go
The rack systems looks awesome!!!! That was a good choice of choosing the stain with the black top❤
Love the two of you together
I literally get excited when I see a new progress video of how you guys are doing. Can't wait to see the final result of it all.
I’d be hesitant about doing business with friends. Just like they say “never do business with family”. I hope you don’t have to learn the meaning of that the hard way. But, it seems to be working great for you guys. I’m confident in you two. Keep it up:)
looking forward to seeing the rack with tanks!
Looking good, just curious what's the floor made from, is it concrete? What's bearing all the weight at those three points of contact. Whatever the floor is made out of it needs to be strong obviously that's a lot of weight 🙂
Hey md! Crazy plant lady here: check your plants for infections/trips. The burn marks could be the sign of an infestation. Also the yellow leaves are often a sign of overwatering/root rot too. Its good to just have a fixed scedule to water, such as once a week. Go around, poke your finger in the soil and only if it got dry give them a good water (preferably with your fishtank water!). Water untill it runs through at the bottom, and throw away any water that ran through/ let them drip out in the sink. If you keep having issues, you might need to take some out of their pots to check the root systems for rot.
Dont water when theyre still wet, and dont let them stand in water, thats how you get root rot.
The only plant that you have that is an exception to this is your spathiphyllum, those dont like drying out
Gosh, I feel excited for u guys!!!! Thanks for sharing this experience. I agree that under the ac, it should be deco rather than tasks. Please also have plants growing in the tanks and go for that jungle vibes. It'll make that area flushed and green.
We need more videos once a week ain’t enough my anxiety is off the charts waiting for a new video to see how the built of the studio is coming along and see you & Matt goofing off in the mean time 2 minds that think alike things work and come out much better nice hear you let Matt enjoy his weekend as a person that worked weekends in retail for many years I know how much you loose out not being able to enjoy your kids they grow to fast + family get together the cook outs birthday party holidays kudos to you Matt ❤
+1
@ampgirl100 as I have been enjoying everything from MD & FSM as much as anyone, and I'm sure it's going to be the best for a very long time ! Hopefully this pace MD has going is what we can expect because I have to say from reading your comment I had to do a little digging before I started my response, and in the last 8 days he's created 4 videos. As someone who struggles with my memory, and one of the most annoying effects from it is having to 2nd guess the whole time. Some days are better than others but that really is what motivated me to get you to realize that your comment was a little ridiculous.
I so appreciate your healthy work/life balance. For a job like this, people often dont consider their own healthy life balance. Good on you! Your thanking Matt after his first week got me feeling all the good feels.
Omg, love the rack, it’s looking good so far - can’t wait to see the finished product!
Way to leave us hangin'!!!!🤯 I cant wait to see the 3rd layer on it!😉 Its gonna look amazing!!!! 😍😍😍
That looks great! I love the way the black painted boards look next to the stained boards.
Great work. You guys need a white board of what to do tomorrow check lists lol
Love seeing the process in the studio
I'm getting so emotionally invested in the future of the studio
I really enjoy watching your videos and now that Matt has joined the team its even better the fun you two have while working together really shows and makes for a fun watch. Can't wait to watch many more videos in the future keep up the good work
I love it! Reminds me so much of my first apartment when I was away at college (1980-I'm old)...I kept my stereo, albums, T.V., books, etc., on concrete block shelving (starving student entertainment unit)...I still like the look of it
I've been really excited to see this video and the results of the new racking system love it MD and fish shop Matt
The top row would look great but would soon be a pain to maintain. I would drop the bottom row by 1 brick and leave the "plant" tanks on the ground. Maybe put them on some black matting so it ties in with the rest of the rack.
Hey MD and Matt. You can always use that top shelf for storage. Because you can never have enough storage. OR...... you could get a big huge pothos plant and put it a long the top shelf and have it coming down to the tanks. Oh my, wouldn't that be gorgeous? And you can also get Brazilian pennywort. It will grow just like the pothos. Get a big start of it for each tank and train it up to the top shelf. 😮oooooo. That'd be sooooooo purty. 👼🐩🍃🍀☘🌿🍃🌞🌝
The plant storage tanks should be on wheels so you can slide them in and out. Movers trolleys/dollys maybe? if you want each tank on its own, otherwise a board with wheels.
This channel is the highlight of my week! Love watching you guys build! Can't wait to see the completed rack!
I love this bromance already 😅 giving Matt the weekends off too ! That’s like gold dust to a retail worker ! Both sounds like you have a much better work / life balance already , love it 👍
The rack looks great, I can’t wait to see it finished! You guys were super fun as always. Thanks for the video!
I wish you both all the success you deserve. I couldn't be happier for you. So excited to see your vision come to life!
"It has to get worse before it gets better" is what you were looking for. This happens every time I move about my office. I use it for my small biz, my fish addiction, and college. Moving one thing means moving everything lol
I love them working together!!! ❤🎉
Here in the states ( KS to be exact ) it’s soy bean harvest and I believe they’re taking off milo. Wouldn’t be surprised if it’s harvest time for you guys as well! Loving you two working together! 💕
You have pushed me to make that decision to go full on with my fish and downsize the farm because I sincerely love scaping (and not having to do farm chores in winter will be amazing!)
Here is a man who knows what it is to graft. You have earned all your success. Great content, keep it coming.
Haha you guys. MD you soooo need to get a company van! Why didn't you just get those blocks delivered lol. Studio is looking amazing
Feed your plants with fish water or go hydroponic and remove all the substrate from the roots and put the roots into net pots and hang on edges inside the tanks. Don't remove yellow leaves - it is a natural plant thing called Senescence, nothing you have done or not done. Provided it is the lower older leaves dying it is normal. It is only an issue if it is the top, youngest leaves flagging. Your monsteras need sphagnum moss poles.
I was a little concerned how it was going to look the way you were talking about it in the last video but it turned out a lot nicer than expected. The stain and paint help a lot!
Can’t wait to see more! It’s going to look so good when fully “tanked”!
Purple light! Let's go CatShopMatt!
Brilliant well done. I love the new setup. Looks magnificent. Great choice to go up another roll of tanks. Well done bloke's
You guys should put everything on industrial wheels so you can move things around freely! Great job, as usual!
Should try putting a carpet upside down when moving heavy stuff
Out it under one side and lift and push or pull the other side
This is so much fun. When I had brick and board bookshelves, I never considered them classy!
There is a whole lot of advice here. I hope you have thought through all of it. 😮 I suspect that you have. That wall is going to be epic!
I work in construction and just be careful, with prolonged weight even with a board across the top that span may sag under the weight of all the tanks when they are full of water, I would get form work timbers that are designed for lots of weight and you will be safe and all your tanks and fish will be safe too
Idea - underwater camera perspective🐋🌿🌊🌱🌊🐟
not sure what stain you used but those soft boards will rot in months, learnt the hardway
Amazing progress, bless you giving Matt the weekends, been there gonig from working weekends to not and it's an amazing feeling. Can't wait to see more!
Please do a longer video focused on plant storage. Detail on what you do now (no mention of ferts, how do you prevent algae in the shallow water), what you tried and failed. Any deviations for particular species, etc.
While a lot of us are not going to buy new plants we aren't using, I'm sure a lot of us might consider a small tank out of the way to grow on trimmings so we have a stock for later/giving away, etc.
Thanks MD.
I think a third row on the rack is defo the right thing but just a thought, you could use it for hard scape storage possibly then where the hard scape is now you could have another bigger tank there possibly or 2 not sure with what space your working with there but just an idea, looking great though and loving the content with both you and matt 👍🏻👊🏻
My structural engineering background is seeing a cringe house of cards. You have too many gravity connections and not enough mechanical connections. I would be siliconing those cinder blocks together and then fastening your joist framing together with some blocking and then somehow to the blocks. Your middle section of cinder block columns are a weak point for racking and toppling over.....especially at 3 levels. It looks cool but once the weighted tanks are on it, if there is any eccentricity or it is slightly unlevel or somebody slightly bumps it, it could rack and topple.
fingers crossed then 😂😂😂😂
@MDFishTanks I love it. Can't wait for the video where the whole rack comes down and then you fill in the space again. :p
I agree with the engineer and another comment about the boards moving as they dry out. You are building a heavy house of cards.
Looking goooddddd
I would paint the blocks black.
That looks good! I might try to build a stand that way!
Nice work, lad's 🎉
Great video and progress. I really liked how matts reaction was put on the end of this video. Keep it up guys 👍
Be careful about crushing the bottom beams, there will be so much pressure on those, you might actually want do do some calculations for that, you got the stacks of concrete + the tanks with water + stones and gravel...
looking forward to the finished project!! will look great!
Put plant dishes on the bottom of your plants there high up in your room so they dry out quickly
Great video. The studio is coming on leaps and bounds.
This could be dangerous - not sure how lumber works in UK, I might have missed the lumber dimensions, but if comparable to US 2x4s, you may be in trouble with sag for this. what are the gallons per tank? I did rough estimates of using US 2x4 with four 20 gallon tanks (estimated) on each shelf and you are looking at almost 3/4 inch sag even with evenly distributed weight per shelf which is excessive and could either potentially fail or cause your rimless tanks to not have a nice flat bottom as the whole shelf will bow.
Thanks for taking the time to calculate and comment. The tanks are not that big. More like 10 gallons....and if they all come down, it will make one hell of a video 😂😂😂 (they won't come down)
Could you have tanks for your extra plants on the very top level? Stuff you don't need to access often etc? Would look pretty cool but I guess you'd need another rack of lights as well!
MD: "And Matt, I never remember the name of these ones (type of Rainbow fish)." Matt: "That's Jeff." LOL
I say this every time I post. You already outgrew this space! I hope you are planning a warehouse next.
I'm literally so excited every time a video notification comes up.. you guys look like you are having so much fun and it shows!
Buy a pickup and dont Block the thermostat. Although im sure you already know that. You guys are doing great. I love your channel.
this looks amazing, really cool industrial vibe
Very cool! I think another level is definitely needed, but may I suggest just loading it with your beautiful driftwood, from one end to the other?
8ft rainbow tank is all im waitin onnn
You could use the board that you painted black to cover the block. It will reduce the industrial look
Another row above would be perfect, and you will have storage at at the top for wood or anything else
You need a work truck for all the tanks and material pick ups
If you guys will be doing a lot of building, and especially if you'll be moving to a different studio, it might be worth it to get a pickup truck
Winced when I saw the MDF, don't let it get wet, it'll swell up! Love the videos
Mate i am glad that you both are together which bring the content more entertaining and matt is a huge asset for your studio! I am still confused does matt runs his channel separately or?
