I know that most people who see this beautiful vase will never pick it up and turn it over, but I was really impressed with the way that the bottom of it turned out. There's a symmetry with the way it all flows together from the bottom up that you just don't see in a lot of castings.

Definitely gives off victorian vibes with the tulip shape and jungle green resin. Being in California my entire life, I can tell you that those gum pods are the worst to step on, but you made them look beautiful in the finished piece 😍

Ooh, the prickerballs again! The bane of my childhood. You have to rake twice a year- leaves in the fall, seed balls in the spring. It’s cool that you can turn that into something so beautiful. Sweet gums are actually quite nice looking trees that grow very tall and straight, and they’re stunning in the fall. But damn, they are a lot of work.
(Since you mentioned it, as far as I know the prickerballs are all pretty much the same size. And I grew up in a forest of sweet gums, so I do know!)

@@SpragueWoodturning You could probably find smaller seed balls from some other species of tree and combine them with the sweet gum pods, if you wanted to fill in the spaces more. I don’t know of any offhand, but I’m sure someone does.

Just one word for this vase... WOW.
WOW WOW WOW! I mean, there's probably plenty of other words like stunning and unique and beautiful, but I'm sticking with WOW!
As an Aussie, my heart is very much with everyone currently affected by the forest fires in Canada. Certainly in my lifetime our bushfires have gotten significantly worse, and seeing more and more from North America hit the international news is rather heartbreaking. I hope you and your family continue to stay safe Jim.
I think eBay auctions would definitely be a fun thing to try, even if they were out of my price range I would enjoy watching the bidding and seeing the final winning price!

Lordy, that is just stunning!!! I am getting total Christmas vibes from it!! In a good way! The wood feels like ribbon from a gift wrap and the dark green color of the resin set off the reddish color of the wood. I think your auctioning some pieces is a great idea. Of course allowing for your base starting price to cover your costs. You might want to consider making a percentage of proceeds on an auctioned piece to a charity. Or occasionally make the proceeds of an entire piece that supports a charity. Maybe at the 100,000 member point

Jim, be thankful you don't live where the Sweet Gums grow. The trees drop their gum balls (as the pods are affectionately known) all over your yard, and you can't go out in bare feet lest you step on the nasty, spiny critters. I heard of someone recently selling them to tourists as porcupine eggs 🥚.

Just started watching woodturning and I am hooked. Would love to try it. I think it is great you show your achievements and mistakes. Every piece I have seen so far is a work of art and I would love to own. Can't wait for future videos.

    Jim,
This is a very interesting piece. I would not have guessed that the Designer Epoxy would be able to pour that deep. Now I know what to do with my Sweet Gum Tree. Thanks for sharing

I really like the profile of this vase. The wood selection was great and I think the sweet gum pods would look nice with just about any color of epoxy. Cool one this week, take care.

Great colour choice again (as always!) The pods give the vase an almost 3D vibe, which is really cool. Absolutely yes, in regards to some ebay listings. You really have nothing to lose, especially if you set a reserve. As always, have a great weekend and I'll be watching next Friday 😀

The Hatless Jig is the preferred dance move of advanced woodturners everywhere! (boy, I haven't heard that term in a long time!!) Such a beautiful vase - I love how the pods are in random order as they float in the resin. Thanks, Jim!

How freaking cool is this!? I am a HUGE fan of EVERYTHING going on here! The shape is really powerful and the colors are wonderful, the wood is beautiful and the green within it? Perfect! It reminds me of old Japanese design! I love when you work with the little pods and walnut shells, what fun textural elements!
Good job on 95k! 100k, here you come!

Lastly: have you ever done a Live Auction on TH-cam? I follow fluid artists that hold them once or twice a year! I know I'd definitely sign on for it!!

Very festive piece! I didn't watch it right away, but I saw the thumbnail. Couldn't figure out how you got the striped color separation, but was very impressed. When I watched, I saw that the red resin was wood. That made so much more sense! LOL 🤦🏼‍♀️ I should have known. Well done.

Great idea to have an e-Bay auction. Those liquid amber seed pods are such a pain each year to get out of my mom's gutters; it's wonderful to see them put to some use that showcases their beauty. Nicely done designer epoxy work!

This is such an interesting piece. The strong vertical lines of the wood and the coves give it an almost art deco feel. I normally dig more flowing natural lines but this vase really grew on me as the video went on!

The artists emphasize that the works are art when they carry a part of the soul of the artist who made it because that's how it excites whoever contemplates, and the rest is craftsmanship. Working using the imagination to produce a work that moves to any extent whoever observes and contemplates it is, from my point of view, art. And I think that the beauty of that work is included in the art.🤩🤩💖

Looking at the spikey pods reminds me of my past. I had until 2020 a malamute (who sadly passed away during the pandemic) and when we used to go on walks he loved to get into the bushes. Sounds all good but in South Wales, UK we have bushes that give off these spikey pods (albeit smaller and more spikey) and by the time we went home it used to take me hours to get them out of his fur (malamutes have great fur but a pain in the rear end to prise these things out). RIP Flash. But anyway, absolutely fantastic vase!!!!!!!!!!

Yes. It might be your best!! Beautiful! Like others have said, it looks like Christmas!! I am very glad you did the ridges, and didn't make another oval. I'm glad you left the lip, on the top! I love the entire piece, design and color scheme! I searched Vimy Ridge and will read up on it, as soon as I finish my comment. God bless!

For whatever reason, your video of the piece you made to look like coral popped up on my TH-cam screen. I watched it and was mesmerized! I was certain it was going to be a disaster, having never watched anything like this before, but it was beautiful! I am a crafter, but nothing like this; still, I love learning about the process and watching everyday objects and plain pieces of wood become works of art, so I had to subscribe. I've had many personal experiences with the sweet gum pods and hated them...but now I see the beauty that can be found in them. This vase is awesome!

What a gorgeous piece of art you created there! My husband turned me on to your channel because I have developed a big interest in working with resin and wood. He even bought me a lathe so I'm learning all I can. Thank you for the videos. You explain everything so clear, I've learned so much. I think auctioning your pieces is a great idea!
