I love your channel me and my wife have watched everyone of your videos to the end. Just a lesson I learned about wearing gloves. I was a machinist for a long time. As well as wood turning. I have seen 3 people loose arms because of gloves. The gloves get even slightly grabbed can suck your hands into the tooling and cause severe injuries. I machined wood, steel, carbon, graphite, both mill and lathe. It is a matter of personal choice. But that choose can be costly. I like to make sure everyone knows what can happen. Thank you for sharing. Designer epoxy.
Metal lathes are unforgiving and I bet most of the really nasty injuries are on it. It can happen with a big powerful wood lathe too, but in my case, my lathe would stall as it’s on belts like most wood lathes. Gear to gear lathes are powerful! Thanks for the warnings!
This is so very cool with the direction of the limbs. And, the purple is AWESOME!! I would have voted for to keep the resin. But, it will be beautiful either way you choose.
Seriously wish I would have discovered your channel years back. My son and I could have watched with my father in Joshua Tree before he had passed. He also was a wood worker. Awesome work and creativity!
I love when you leave the unexpected challenges in your videos. There is so much more to your craft than slapping things together. I think it really shows the mastery of tool and materials to make your art.
@@SpragueWoodturning Audience participation is very important to getting people's interest and keeping it! You also did a great job introducing that aspect at the beginning of the video. Jim - I’ve had similar problems with entrapped air when I pour the resin on top of a branch inlay and then count on the air bubbles working their way out through the layer of epoxy. I’ve pretty much eliminated this problem by using a pipette (mini turkey baster) to squeeze the epoxy in at the bottom of the piece through one of the gaps between the branches. This effectively pushes the air out as the resin is squeezed in at the bottom. This also works well to fill deep holes like one you stuck your screwdriver into.
To begin with a piece of wood that looked like that compared to what you created in the end is a miracle! Awesome work, you made another masterpiece! So cool!!
You can always try the lesser and see how it goes and if all else fails than go down to the wood. What ever you do I’m sure it will be wonderful. It’s always a pleasure to watch you turning and see what art you come up with.
Resin. I agree with what many others have said. Try to keep the resin and if it doesn’t work out or meet your expectations take it on down to the wood. I trust your skill and artistry to produce something beautiful whatever you choose.😊
Jim, if the curves were more balanced, I would definitely say resin, but with on wing dipping farther down, I would have to say go for a wood rim. The great thing about this conundrum is that you can take it slowly and see how it evolves as you are taking it down. You may be surprised with the results.
I don't know where I am time wise as I am still trying to recover from being really sick with covid. Nearly died, couldn't talk spent more than a month in an adult facility. Mom and I both have been cleared of covid and are home. She did not have it like I did fortunately. My brain seems to still be healing. A little better each day. Ugly disease. It is why I have been absent for so long.. But for what it is worth, I agree with jim. Beautiful so far.
My 2 cents would be resin on top. Really liking the color tho personally I am a fan of much darker purple. Neat idea adding the black pearl to darken it up.
So far it's stunning, and part of that is that resin! I think it should stay, and since you're a pro, you know when and what adjustments to make if it gives you any trouble. I can't wait to see the end result!💜
Oh my!!! I’m very partial to deep purple - band and colour!!! I absolutely love this and can’t wait to see what you do with it so I’m off to watch part 2 now. I’m sure this was snapped up but this is exactly the sort of piece I’d buy in a heartbeat! 💜💜💜
Absolutely love your work, and the format of your channel Jim. Personally I've just got too much OCD for the resin rim.... if it were me, and I already knew I was grinding anyway, I'd just take I down to the wood. It keeps the piece primarily about the wood, and the resin as an extraordinary accent... it conceals the fact that it was a casting too, leaves you wondering if it were just an epic inlay. But I differ to the judgement of the master!
I think resin! It doesn’t matter that it’ll be thinner on one side than the other, that’ll be part of this bowls charm. The fact that the rim will be all purple will “tie it all together”. It’s going to be a beauty! 🙂🌸
Love your work, Jim! I think the unevenness of the epoxy rim could add more charm to an already lovely piece. I say leave it. If you absolutely HATE the look then take it back to the wood. Also if you can leave the top of the vase with the current profile, I think that would look amazing. Regardless of what any of us say, the piece will be just as terrific as you always produce! Have a blessed week!!!
Another very interesting project. I like the side reveal of the branches. My vote is to take it down to wood then do your magic by adding a purple rim to top it off.
I love this one also, leaving the resin would be beautiful. All the work you go through for the finished projects are extremely helpful, for me. I want to move toward turning, and using resins. The Designer Resin you use, has so many opportunity in art. Seeing it in action brings visions of possibilities.
Looking good Jim. can't wait to see it finished. my finger cringed when you described the bandsaw blade lol. with your track record are you sure you didnt spend a couple of hours off camera getting it out of the bucket then put it back in for the camera lol. loved the instruction when you were using the band saw to get rid of the wings. I was waiting for "this is the safe way to do it Bruce" no resin on top is my vote.
Another beautiful piece, anyway it turns out it will be awesome. my vote is to make the resin even, if it doesn't look right or doesn't work out you can always go down to the wood. I think it will turn out great no matter what way you do it.
Crazy project Jim, amazing what you come up with. My thought is to try the resin top first and if you don't like it then continue onto the wood. You're the artist and you have to be happy with the project, so it's still your call. Looking forward to seeing the final piece. Good liuck.
Great video and very interactive. I would try to achieve a resin top and it it doesnt turn out then go for the wood finish. Either way both are going to offer a unique look when its finished. Awesome project so far, Gary,Papa 1942 uses denatured alcohol on the hot melt glue, letting it sit on there for a few minutes, then it peels right off. I have tried this too it works really well. Hi Jim, I think removing the resin from the rim would look better. Something I learnt from Gary on his TH-cam channel "ThePapa1947" is that you can remove hot melt glue by dabbing it with denatured alcohol and leaving it for 5 to 10 minutes. The alcohol gets under the glue and it peels away easily. Thanks for another great video.
