2023 Mazda CX-60 PHEV review - BMW Beware?

  • The CX-60 is Mazda's answer to the BMW X3 and Mercedes GLC. Yes, you read that right, Mazda wants to challenge the luxury establishment with vehicles built on a brand new rear-wheel drive platform - the CX-60 is the first vehicle to be built on said platform and on first impression it seems really good.

I've had my CX60 Homura PHEV with convenience and driver pack (in gorgeous Soul Red Crystal) for two weeks and I love it compared to my previous Mercedes E 350D, AMG Line, Premium Plus that had low profile tyres and felt every pothole with a thump (three new tyres in three years!). The CX60 is better equipped, slightly quicker to 62 MPH, and more comfortable. It has proper leather seats (is more like my previous Jaguar XJL) rather than the phony mock leather and cloth of the German car. This particular video review was fair, but other reviewers have been lazy and not sought out the CX60's hidden gems. For example, the lack of touchscreen is a deliberate safety feature. However, you don't need a touch screen when you have voice control, which is even better if using Apple Car Play. My Mercedes had voice control, and no touch screen, but it often struggled to understand my accent. My only criticism is that the EV range is around 30 miles rather than the quoted 39. But we have had cold weather and this range might improve over Summer. In short distance (hence largely EV mode) urban motoring, I have repeatedly exceeded 100 MPG and over two longer journeys topped 50 MPG, with the regenerative functionality restoring my EV battery back up to 50%. Whilst UK (home) charging costs are currently at a record high of around £0.34 per kWh (with UK Government capping), I am enjoying very economical motoring. which should improve once prices stabilise back at previous levels. This car has been positioned to challenge BMW and Mercedes. The equation for me was simple. I saved £12,000 compared to the equivalent equipped BMW or Mercedes PHEV SUV, hence got more value for my money and it was available in the showroom within 14 days. As a former 'brand snob', I probably would never have walked into a Mazda dealer had Mercedes, BMW or Audi had current stock, but I am glad I did.

Thank you for watching and for your lengthy and detailed comment!
I too think Mazda has a winner on its hands with the CX-60. It is the perfect vehicle to convert badge snobs with its blend of good looks, excellent performance, a really good interior and rarity. The only area where Mazda could improve is in the tech department where I feel it is not quite as advanced as rivals, but it's not far behind.
And regarding the PHEV variant's EV range, well, few cars actually achieve their claimed WLTP range. You should always search for the US EPA range rating since that is much more accurate. The CX-60 isn't sold in the US, so it's a bad example, but as a rule, EPA numbers are much closer to reality and some vehicles actually exceed their claimed EPA range.

Cheers, thanks for watching! It’s a no-contest in my mind between the Mazda and the Skoda. One is built on a bespoke rear-wheel drive platform that gives it remarkable road manners, sportiness, and premium feel, while the other is a VW Golf stretched as long and as tall as Skoda could :) The Kodiaq is fine, but not in the same league as the CX-60 IMHO.

    Hey there
Some of your complaints are fair, but i want to mention, that some of the technical facts are wrong:
It’s actually an 8 speed automatic, not a dual clutch. But it doesn’t use a torque converter.
It doesn’t have a heat pump for heating but PTC based electric heating. That’s why the range is so much less during the winter time, because the heating uses up so much energy.
The electric motor is 175 instead of 136 hp.
I‘m happy to report, that the drive train refinement and the comfort have been greatly improved since the very first cars have been delivered. The „supercharger sound“ is now gone and the electric part of the drivetrain is also much less audible now.
I’ve ordered a fully loaded Homura PHEV in the same color also this test vehicle and I can’t wait for it to be delivered 😍

I went for an Exclusive line with driver and convenience packs in Soul Red.... I just don't want the bigger wheels - they are just SO much more prone to kerb rash, the tyres cost more and they make the low speed ride more jittery. I test drove a Homura and it does handle very well - I'm comparing to my Maserati Levante (on 21 inch wheels) which goes back to the dealer tomorrow (as a sell back - I've owned it for 4 years). Time to start doing more of my short trips (most of my trips) off electric.. My car should get into a UK port tomorrow :)

The twin exhausts are fake. Real exhaust pipes are underneath. Bog standard pipes. Seems a cheap option on an otherwise styly vehicle. We've ordered one, GT PHEV, and nor even had a test drive. Aussie release date keeps getting pushed back. Hopefully some last minute changes to reflect early tests /reviews.

Yeah, I noticed the pipes when I was shooting B-roll but forgot to mention it in the review.
The only major thing I would change has to do with ride comfort. Maybe give the vehicle a softer suspension setup or offer adaptive dampers that should make a difference.
