  • When Mazda invites you to drive its most powerful car ever, you say yes. When you find out it's actually a plug-in hybrid electric SUV that weighs more than two tonnes? You still say yes.
That's because this new car - the 2022 Mazda CX-60 - is the brand's first PHEV (plugin hybrid EV), and is indeed the most powerful Mazda ever because it pairs a 2.5-litre petrol engine with a 100kW electric motor, making for total system outputs of 241kW and 500Nm!
If you're wondering, that means a 0-100km/h time of 5.8 seconds, which is damn fast considering this is also a practical family SUV with five seats and a bit boot/trunk space.
You can make your own mind up about the looks, but there's a lot of interesting stuff with this new Mazda SUV. If you want to read all about it, hit the link below to go to Stephen Corby's review at the CarsGuide site.

The launch in Europe is very different to Australia or Japan. In Europe, CO2 emissions count for more and hence the PHEV is the first model to be released.
In Japan, there is a love specifically of Mazda Skyactiv-D diesels that started from the very first CX-5 in 2012 that was initially helped by very low diesel prices but further strengthened when the Japanese government audited the diesel engines of Japanese automotive makers in the wake of the VW diesel emissions debacle, to test emissions and unlike the Germans (who did not publish findings, but it's well known every diesel failed emissions), the Japanese government did publish findings, noting that the Mazda diesel was the only one being produced that was honest with emissions (which in itself is helped by the fact that Mazda is the only commercial producer of low compression diesels).
So in Japan, they're already media testing the straight 6 diesel with plans to release that first.
In Australia I think the base 2.5L without PHEV will be first. But I suspect the first new engine to be released will be the diesel, then the PHEV.
Hard to say given fuel prices. Maybe people will flock to the PHEV. It's hard to get a competitor PHEV with Outlander releasing one, but the Outlander is well behind in dynamics and should not be a direct competitor.

Other reviews have said the same about the ride not feeling like a Mazda, and the EV to ICE switch not being as smooth as they liked. Hopefully, Mazda will tune it a bit. Else, I will await the next iteration.

I was very keen on this car until I found out how much the battery costs to replace in Australia. Just the part is 36,000. It means after the battery warranty of 8 years ( I think) , the car is basically worthless. This led me on a tangent to check out the other PHEV battery costs. e-power = 9.5k, outlander = 12-15k, kia = 15-20k, Mazda cx-60 = 36k. Probably add I drove the diesel, petrol and PHEV. I concur that transmission is stuttery in low speeds but not a huge issue for me and ride was very firm. It is a very nicely designed car with a fantastic hybrid engine but with an elevated price.

Many have said that. They used to say Audi of Japan as well, but then Audi slowly started to go FWD so they've started using BMW again.

It’s kind of the real name of Mazda especially in China like ‘Orient BMW’. Actually their designs are very similar, just look at the whole info part of Mazda and you will find a lot of similarities with (older) BMWs.

Not sure how big is the CX60 compared to the CX5

I just wish the front end looked more like a Mazda than a Cadillac. The 2019 pre face-lift CX-5 had the perfect Mazda SUV front end and I wish Mazda didn't stray so far from it with it's recent cars like the CX-5 refresh, CX-50, CX-60, and MX-30

Diesel engines are being phased out because of emissions

    • @inodesnet
      @inodesnet 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I think the diesels will certainly come. As per a comment above, after audits done by the Japanese and German governments on diesel engines, the only published manufacturer that was showed not to be cheating with emissions (i.e. on dyno and on road was the same as the stated emissions) was Mazda. This is in part due to three things:
      1. Low compression. Mazda is the only producer of low compression diesels. This first appeared in the 2012 CX-5 but was done after decades of research at universities in the UK and India into low compression which showed a low compression of 14:1 (instead of 16:1+) lowered emissions. This has the added benefit of taking increasing rpm and significantly reducing the agricultural sound. Put a Mazda next to a VW and the difference is immediately noticeable (the Germans have not decided to do low compression yet).
      2. Honesty. In 2012 Mazda started the work to get US EPA approval for the Skyactiv-D. It took well over 5 years before they had the emissions pass and exported the car. In that time of course we know that VW was exporting high compression diesels with the dyno cheat. When Mazda did eventual release though, the engined payed the penalty for meeting US EPA (which is 1/4 of the emission target acceptable in Australia). The power, torque and economy all suffered leaving the USA with a a lack lustre version of the engine, that although it was honest, was no longer worth it. They pulled the engine just over a year after release.
      3. Australian emission standards. Australia isn't known for chasing environmental standards. Introducing low sulphur diesel back in the early 2000's was as far as we got, and we're certainly not aiming for Euro VI or US EPA.
For these reasons, the diesel will certainly still come to Australia.

@@wax333 I know. Euro 6 starts here soon & Europe will be well into Euro 7 with that making it harder for any diesel to comply with new emissions regs

I have just ordered one CX60 PHEV as daily vehicle (as company car) after testing and feeling it. Mine is the Homura in red and fully equipped.
It is a really surprising car and I have chosen it over the X3 30e and the Q5 e55tfsi… for the price the CX60 offers A LOT.
And in Spain (my country) vehicles with the 0 emissions label can move freely in restricted areas without paying anything (and I also have charging areas in my job) so for my was an overall clear win.
