My theory about Tortured Crossing is that he did it as a point and click game, realized he had NO idea how to program, and just slapped it into a movie.
Thought the same thing! It felt like a cross between Monkey Island and Mortal Kombat!
This "green screen characters pasted on backgrounds" style fits *exactly* the aesthetics of late '90s Sierra FMV adventure games like Phantasmagoria or Gabriel Knight 2.
This isn't a traditional movie per se, rather than a bad FMV adventure game.
I doubt this man knows what a point & click game is.
He just bought a bunch of pics from Shutterstcok and made a green screen movie using those pics as backgrounds because it's easier than going outside.

The tiger animation is apparently the ONLY thing Neil let someone else do, and he still micromanaged the shit out of it. The lady who did it said that she COULD do much better (and showed him), but the end result tiger fight is what Neil WANTED.
I was about to post this. Breen looked for someone who could animate a tiger. The person he hired did the job. She wanted to touch up the tiger but he didn't want it. Breenius!
He needs complete artistic control, man! You don't understand how much it hurts him when he has to credit another person in his films.
I believe that he wanted the tiger to be pure white. Or, I guess, to have white stripes rather than black…

The sad part about all of this is that he won two awards for this film; one for 'Best Fantasy Film' and the other for 'People's Choice Award' at the Hollywood Reel Independent Film Festival in 2023. Now he has vindication that he is peak Breen!

I love how he has realised he can shoot EVERYTHING -THE WHOLE DAMN MOVIE in front of a green screen in his living room now so he doesn't even have to venture outside to any bothersome locations. I'm picturing the catering consisting of tv-dinners that were on sale (buy 5 pay for 4) in his freezer and a microwave oven. :)

Yeah, i think people miss the fact that Breen probably shot this around 2020 to 2021 (and edited around 2022), and i think THAT is the reason this is pure green screen, I hope that he makes a new one and relies less on it.
However, Breen is quite older, he is 65 right now, Double Down came out in 2005, Breen was around 45 at the time, but right now i dont think he is quite capable of even going uphill like he did back then, or going downhill without rolling, he has always moved quite weirdly, but here you can feel his age, not even able to do a light jog without breaking something.
I really hope he makes another one, but man, we have to accept that the guy wont be doing much moving around if he does.
he can go the sifu Seagal route and just sit in a chair for alll the action scenes! Maybe do a light waddle around to show how he's still in peak physical condition..

There’s an entry from a high school yearbook with a picture that’s recognizable as Breen, for I believe a Cornelius Francis Breen (perhaps Jr.?) nicknamed Neil. I don’t know what the year of the yearbook is but it looks too old for Neil’s claimed age…

I listened to an interview with the person who did the CGI for the tiger and based on what she said I don't think he's joking. She basically said he wanted the tiger to look that way to give it like an "ethereal" quality.

Considering that actual Scientologists usually seem to make their affiliation known, I think it’s safe to assume that he’s not an actual Scientologist so much as just another one of those generic hippie types you see scattered throughout the southwest. It's always a pleasure to watch a genuine mad man at work, and Neil is the daddy of them all. Nothing he does makes any sort of sense to anybody but him, and he is absolutely convinced that he is a genius. Even the Razzies won't touch him just in case he actually shows up to the ceremony.

Every Neil Breen film is a horror movie. I've never felt more cosmic, existential dread than watching his latest masterpiece.
It's like the worst thing and the best thing at the same time...like a Sega CD game from 1996.
Many years ago here in Blighty we had a kids' TV show called Knightmare. It was a kids' game show based on the Dungeons & Dragons concept. All the sets and the NRP characters and the monsters were rendered in ropey 1980s-quality special effects. I only mention it here because the quality of the green-screening in this film reminds me of it.
