He wasn't trained in the traditional "classic" manner, he was training to be a Cantor, an 'official' singer in a Synagogue. His Great Grandfather was the Head Cantor in the largest Synagogue in Jerusalem.
His voice is tremendous!!! It goes right into your soul!!! Just amazing!!! This song is timeless!!! Very relevant to what's going on in the world today!!!
1) Yes, English IS his first language. He's originally from Brooklyn, and now lives in Chicago. As was mentioned in another comment, he was trained as a cantor while going to school to eventually become a rabbi, a path he chose not to complete. 2) You commented that his vocal fry must hurt...it doesn't. When it is done correctly, there is no pain and no damage being done. 3) No he was not near the top end of his voice at all, in this song. He WAS sick, however. His *known* range is B♭1-G♯5. 4) His name is David Draiman (pronounced DRAY-man). If you want to hear someone else who can effortlessly change between types of singing styles, I recommend the band Jinjer (pronounced just like ginger). Start with the song Pisces (like the zodiac sign with the fish). Let us know when your mind stops spinning, after that one.
Thank you for this reply.. the classically trained part makes much sense. He has so much control and great diction! I’m no expert on vocal fry but from my study i understand that vocal fry is a lower register auxiliary, basically the chords are not vibrating with enough frequency to sustain a clear tone. This (his upper 4th octave belts) sound more like hyper functional phonation, or really just plain vocal tiredness. If your chords are already tired or inflamed, and you are singing at this capacity it will cause strain, & that’s what it sounded like to me. Again, based on my studies, I would not consider that vocal fry.
Rob, I was just about to write all you just did so i guess is no point in writing all that again. Disturbed is my no 1 band of all times, so i was ready to come in with some info, but you did a great job with that. And i was also just about to ask her to react to Jinjer. Awesome comments and info you gave her. Anyway, do not be very hard on her, after she will listen to more Disturbed (if she wants) then she will understand all you said above.
@@robmorris5122 Quality information. Are you a Disturbed fan? Cause that is pretty much info you get from watching interviews with the band and especially David.
@@Dileesa You, having the degrees and training, are certainly more the expert on vocal techniques than I. Whether we're talking about fry, engaging the false chords to "growl", mixed-voice sub-harmonics, or whatever other techniques singers use to distort their voices, there are good ways and bad ways to do it...Draiman has been doing this for almost a quarter of a century and, in an interview about this song, noted that he still has the vocal abilities he had 20 years ago which certainly means he's doing it in a non-destructive way. Check out Devin Townsend, as well...the song "Kingdom" (the live performance for EMGtv) is a great example of this, as well...and he's a heck of a showman! I think you'll like it!
You are completely beautiful and your dictation is amazing. Perfect reaction. The way he does the vocal fry is actually the correct way. Where most metal artists have to take days to recover from a performance, because their fry sits heavy on their vocal folds, David takes almost no recovery time, because his is so far forward and properly placed. As others have stated, his vocal fry is a stylistic choice, not out of necessity.
-Draiman covers roughly two-and-a-half octaves from bottom to top. His vocals are so distinctive. -Disturbed had been nominated for a GRAMMY for Best Rock Performance for their rendition of "The Sound of Silence" while appearing on Conan. -David Draiman: "The fact that I was sick as a dog (laughs). Loved your reaction. He’s been a metal rock singer for thirty years. Look up disturbed “down with the sickness” and you’ll get a taste of what his career has been about.
This is my favorite rendition of this song. His interpretation truly brings out the true meaning of the lyrics. Simon and Garfunkel sang to alarm us, Disturbed sings to give us a final warning. You should watch the original music video of it when you get a chance. It is as beautiful as it is haunting.
Thanks for checking him out. You may want to see how other vocal coaches analyzed his performance. You may find some to be very enlightening and get a perspective you might have missed initially. I have watched tons of reactions to this superb singer and his rendition of this song. Is simply the best vocally. It’s a one off in style for this heavy metal band; I only like this one from them myself.
"You're just coming into who you are vocally in that middle age range". TOTALLY agree. One of the wisest and truest things I've heard from a coach yet, thanks.
I enjoyed this performance as well. The thing I like about this guy's voice the most is his lower register because of how full and rich it is and I also amazed at how he went from 0 to 60 within a matter of seconds. That's how you tell a story with your voice.
Excellent vocal analysis. Congratulations ........ On the lyrics, Simon and Garfunkel's version was a warning. The Disturbed version is furious because the warning was ignored.
I think Mr. David could sing anything he chose to sing. How wonderful that would be. Yes, you are right, so gifted. Hats off to David & Disturbed. Best cover ever.
I have listened to oh, about 30 different reactions by vocal coaches to this song. I wanted to say thanks! Not only was this performance live, David Draiman was sick that day. Classically trained as a Cantor, this song really allows him to show off one of the widest ranges I've ever heard from a singer. PLEASE react to Nightwish. There is a spesific order to the songs you need to listen to but the first go to for reactors is Ghost Love score live at Wacken 2013. You will be blown away!
One thing that was pointed out to me was that the distance between his mouth and the mike stayed pretty much the same throughout the song. That's probably why his voice still sounds great after about 24 years or so of singing metal music. 😆
He is American. From Chicago. You may be hearing effects of his training as a cantor. He was not over singing. He used a technique called “vocal fry or fray” where the raspiness comes from air passing through the glottal point, which makes a rasp or bubbling sound. He is putting no strain on his vocal chords. Other artists do vocal fry and shred the muscles to pieces. David does not do that. His is a mastery of control.
Oh you should really know his style, hes amazing. This song really shows off his range. Normally metal..lots of vocal fry and loud sound. He trained as a Cantor when younger. I love David. I've been to several of their concerts over the years..including a recent one , where they did this song. And it was even better. He had the flu during this Conan show...even so ..so amazing. If you want to hear his female equal...Floor Jansen. One that definitely showcases her voice is the live version of Ghost Love Score, at Wacken..(.official. )
You want to dissect a unique voice that no one in the world has but this man, and no one in the world will ever have? You should listen to Layne Stayley of "Alice in Chains" live at the Moor. This is in Seattle. I would suggest Love Hate Love. They also did MTV unplugged back when MTV actually still played music. I recommend "Nutshell" from that show or "Would", "Angry Chair", anything from that show is timeless and amazing. Layne's voice is something you've never heard, it's haunting and beautiful! Please give him a listen you will not regret it I promise!
The reason this performance is so striking is that it actually alters , to a slight degree, the chemical balance in the brain. It impacts the neurons and chemical release of endorphins which is what causes the physical impression so many feel during the musical presentation. It has a diminishing impact if you watch the video repeatedly but if you allow yourself to be distracted and then come back to watch it again you will experience the same reaction. Quite remarkable. Other artists have been able to draw forth the same thing from audiences but never with such repetition..
David wasn't actully pushing his voice even towards the end... he could even sing the lot in pure tone if he wanted too, but he has so much control that he can sprinkle in distortion on call and is one of the very few that can do it so perfectly in a vibrato. A trully amazing voice...
Good analysis. I did see a vocal coach reaction that said his pronunciation was intentional because "word" and "world" sound very similar when spoken, so when singing in English you need to be more aware in your vowels in certain instances. If you focus on the vowel over the consonant, word and world sound very different. I think why you thought he was ESL was because his choices are very precise and meticulous. If I talked to someone on the street in Spain and talked completely proper Spanish, they'd understand but wonder why I spoke so "proper". Only he's applying very subtle nuances of English into how it performs in music. Just my double abes.
His rasp was deliberate... On top, do not forget that this night, he was sick as hell, and they even had to have him sing sitting as they fear that he might have passed on stage...
Hi for yur first reaction you started with a gigantuian one best ever live preformence if all time. Well that's my opinion any way good luck with yur channel I think it's great luv yur work
You should check out some Marc Martel. He is mostly known for doing Queen songs (and was the voice in the Bohemian Rhapsody Movie filling in when they did not have usable material). However, he has a lot of original work, mostly with his old band, Downhere and an EP and a full album. I would recommend his versions of I Will Always Love You , Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me, Bohemian Rhapsody, and Love of My Life. Check out his channel.
A lot of vocal coaches react wondering if his vocal frye will hurt his voice. If you listen to it closely and watch, notice that the frye is produced above his vocal chords and, at least to me, involves the nasal cavity. He's done heavy metal for twenty something years and has perfected it. David Draiman was trained as a Cantor. English is his first language, but he's from Brooklyn, which some would say isn't English. LOL
Omg yasss!! I'm so so glad to see you back on TH-cam. You're one of the original Vocal Channels and serve so much information. Do you take requests or have a process by which you decide on clips?
@@Dileesa No problem just being honest. I've followed your channel for years. I'd love your reaction to Judy Collins In The Twilight. She's an pioneering folk singer and influence Leonard Cohen and Joni Mitchell
Deleesa I thoroughly enjoyed your reaction. I look forward to additional ones. I see some noted David was sick and auto tune was used on bits of the song. David was livid this was done. If you would like to obtain a better idea of his abilities listen to "Down With The Sickness, " " Hold on to Memories," "The Light," and "A Reason to Fight." David and the entire band Disturbed is talented and I think you will hear their talent by listening to these songs and more.
Can you react to Nightwish - Ghost Love Score - Live at Wacken 2013, please? You would make me really happy. Singer of Nightwish is Floor Jansen and she is one of greatest singers in the world
Funny you mention Phil Collins. “Disturbed” does a cover of “Land of Confusion,” in their normal metal style, and frankly, I like it better than the Genesis version.
I would suggest watching the version Disturbed did in their official video for this song vs. this live version, you really get to hear the fry there, this version is kind of sanitized, and apparently he was sick, the official video version will knock your socks off! I heard another coach talk about that he does a 'wet' vs 'dry' fry, which is why he hasn't damaged his voice. I would also encourage you to listen/watch the song "The Sickness", that is the music that he is really known for, heavy rock!
He's doing what's called a false vocal fry. He's using his false vocal cords to create the fry while mantaining the tone with his real vocal cords. It's how he can hold the tone while also creating the fry. It's something that takes years of practice to learn to do correctly.
He was born in 1973, and he had to have an operation to repair something in his throat to stop acid reflux. I think that this is the best cover of this song, I hate the other versions of it. I love both the original version and this version....
Wet fry so it isn't created in the throat and doesn't hurt his vocal chords. He was sick at the time. No damage to his chords which is why he still sounds completely amazing. Raised in the Jewish faith as a cantor he is impeccably trained and David Draiman sounds just as amazing doing the normal sound of the band.
Yes he's American. He's had about 6 surgeries on his throat due to having something wrong. Its changed his voice a little but his voice has been amazing anyways. The rasp seems fairly well trained, I'm not a singing coach or anything so I can say. But if you listen to one of their heavier songs like Prayer, Stricken or Inside The Fire, you'll probably get a better gauge on it.
I would love to watch your reaction and analysis of some of the greatest voices like Whitney, Mariah, Celine, Toni Braxton, Tamar Braxton, Ariana Grande, Demi Lovato .... Love from Brasil!
He doesn't "over sing." A rasp can be produced safely without damage to your vocal cords if you are properly trained. You don't have enough background in rock singing to know this.
Please react to the band "Dirty Loops." They are a jazz-funk-pop fusion band from Sweden. Yes, you read that right lol. They are masters of their instrument and their vocalist seriously channels Stevie Wonder and MIchael Jackson at times so I'd love to hear your take. Try their song "Next to You" or "Work Shit Out."
He's a heavy metal singer who is classically trained. The vocal fray is a deliberate choice. His range is amazing. My favorite band ever.
I know a lot of metal singers are classically trained dont let the harshness fool you

Able to place his rasp forward, away from the throat which can be damaging. Reminds me of Devin Townsend who can do the same.

PLEASE react to Nightwish. There is a spesific order to the songs you need to listen to but the first go to for reactors is Ghost Love score live at Wacken 2013. You will be blown away!
He was actually getting sick during this performance and he also was sitting down which is something he doesn't normally do.
You have a beautiful voice too.
That vocal fray is done purposely. That isn't him straining or reaching his vocal limit in any way shape or form
She does the best analysis of him
One thing that was pointed out to me was that the distance between his mouth and the mike stayed pretty much the same throughout the song. That's probably why his voice still sounds great after about 24 years or so of singing metal music. 😆
You should check out Jinjer- Pisces live session,
Nice. More reaction videos PLEASE
English is definitely his first language. I liked your reaction.
David Draimans vocal fry is known as a wet fry and is above the vocal cords. It's the dry fry, which is below the cords that hurts ones voice.
His name is David Draiman....AWESOME voice! BTW...his rasp is deliberate....
One that definitely showcases her voice is the live version of Ghost Love Score, at Wacken..(.official. )
I'm gonna go ahead and add my ticket to the pile. Jinjer - Pisces Live studio session. Tatiana's vocal agility is mind blowing.
Wow, you even had a beautiful speaking voice.
I had the same reaction... Subscribed.
He's a metal singer and he meant to put that distortion in his voice. He is a Jewish American who was raised here in the US.
LOL
He uses that vocal fry at will, but he can clean it immediately...
He was born in NYC best heavy metal voice in my opinion
Tool - Sober Live! Your video was great!
Omg yasss!! I'm so so glad to see you back on TH-cam. You're one of the original Vocal Channels and serve so much information. Do you take requests or have a process by which you decide on clips?
I take requests!!! ♥️♥️♥️ and thank you 😘
@@Dileesa No problem just being honest.
Listen to the groups "Voice Play", "Home Free", and Pentatonix.
A sound from the Heavens
He's doing what's called a false vocal fry. He's using his false vocal cords to create the fry while mantaining the tone with his real vocal cords. It's how he can hold the tone while also creating the fry. It's something that takes years of practice to learn to do correctly.
Watch the Official Video. He will show you what he was trying to tell you in this performance.
He was very sick during this performance which is why he was sitting. His growls was deliberate. I love him
Tdeey Swims has an amazing voice as well, his cover of I can’t make you love me is astounding
He was born in 1973, and he had to have an operation to repair something in his throat to stop acid reflux. I think that this is the best cover of this song, I hate the other versions of it. I love both the original version and this version....
You said, "that must hurt"! Nope, doubt it. Check out his other music. He uses his voice like a percussion element.
Yes, and he's sitting down for this...
He was also trained as a Cantor, and the rasp ans and growl is a texture overlaid - David Draiman! He is American!
He had a fever of 101 when he did this performance
English is David Draiman's first language as he is a Chicago born, operatically trained singer.
awesome reaction from a very beautiful woman 👍
He doesn't "over sing." A rasp can be produced safely without damage to your vocal cords if you are properly trained. You don't have enough background in rock singing to know this.
Please react to the band "Dirty Loops." They are a jazz-funk-pop fusion band from Sweden. Yes, you read that right lol. They are masters of their instrument and their vocalist seriously channels Stevie Wonder and MIchael Jackson at times so I'd love to hear your take. Try their song "Next to You" or "Work Shit Out."
