Frosty, your problem cause was different than mine but I found the FIX:
This video has like the same dishwasher as mine:
    1. My Old Whirlpool Detergent door wasn't popping opening at all or intermittently, during the start of the light wash cycle, as it should and the detergent door spring's strong two metal legs were not broken and still making contact just fine. I even bought a replacement detergent door and latch spring kit and installed it all but the problem was still there intermittently. Although the new detergent door had a new integral seal and my old door seal was missing chunks in it so that was good.
FIX FOUND BY: Removed the rubber trim strip at bottom of door, it just unzips from it's plastic holding channel by pulling from either end of the strip. Then the door large color panel and cardboard just comes out. At the top of the door open long nylon mechanism, there are two opposing U shaped wishbone arms with ribbed teeth fingers mechanisms that interlock and slide in and out of each other upon activation of the detergent door opening.
I found the upper inner U shaped arms had lost some of their outward natural push was causing the problem.
To fix, I slid forward these toothed arms so the disengaged from the bottom arms. Then I spread them some with a tool and had to apply heat from a hair dryer on high to direct heat the middle wishbone enough so that the arms took on the more spread apart shape. After cooling, I reengaged the tooth arms. The detergent door works always like it should now.
    2. The dishwasher wasn't filling with enough water during the start of wash cycles, causing a surging cavitation sound of the pump and reduced effective cleaning.
FIX FOUND BY: Removed dishwasher and turned it onto it's side to access the electro magnet that allows water flow, it's where the in water hose screws on.
Using a pick tool, I found and removed a metal screen and cleaned it and found and removed a black rubber thick water flow controlling disk that has a hole in the center.
Using 2 drill bits slightly bigger than each other and than the center hole in the rubber disk, the disk held not in my hand but a vice or pliers would work. I reamed it's hole bigger and bigger with the 2 drill bits. Don't go too big, it has purpose.
    Reinstalled it all back together.
Now dishwasher always fills enough with water and it has the inside tub bottom white float that always shuts off the water flow if it gets too the full water level before the water valve shuts off. This disk with hole controlling the water flow amount is quite a guess from the designers because we all have different water pressures plus the screen was dirty but I know I also had to enlarge the hole because I had already tried just cleaning the screen and it still didn't always fill enough for to prevent pump surging.
We Like our old mechanical electric clock like round turn knob on the right and buttons on the left Dishwasher and want to keep it working till something we can't easily fix goes out.
Why throw away the thing when just one simple thing needs fixed and we can do it for free and learn from it?
We may learn this design will now last for many more years. These clean Well and the pumps are Strong and I've heard some of the new dishwashers have their problems. When it's expensive to fix then I'll replace the washer.
Lots of these models were sold, this post may help someone.
    Take care

If i may add to your video, i had a nearly identical problem, except my issue was more so the pins sticking out the twine. I realized what had happened to mine courtesy of your video; I had to place the pins on the back-end of the plastic in order to get the latch tension back. Works fine now!

video shows final result but not how to get there .. so first thing is you can remove the dispenser door (if u need to) by popping it out the plastic hinge (which has spring on it), then position the spring so it is on top of the notch (in the middle) .. push the door back onto the hinge.. using knife or screwdriver may work but it is easier with a small pointy plyers .. then push ends of the spring sideways so they go inside the edge of the door .. and its done

Always fix the good old machine unless it’s a crappy style with one spray arm. That’s a beautiful Whirlpool powerclean. Mine is a bit newer one of the last ones made in the powerclean generation, and I’ve had it for over a year and it’s been used heavily and never an issue, and it’s cleaned very regularly. The only problem I had with it was the rinse aid and detergent dispenser weren’t working at all and I finally found out it was a bad wax motor and I replaced that and it works just like new. These older machines are so worth repairing, these were the best cleaning dishwashers with huge motors. I’ve had my eye on these machines for decades and they are very reliable.
