Great job looks good, just a wee tip when fixing the timber to masonry walls it’s a good idea to put a DPM (plastic barrier) on the wood face that’s against the wall to stop any moisture getting into the wood causing it to rot quicker
Hi Jack, I wonder if you might be so kind to give even more advice on this. For me, the house is dashed. Will this be a problem? I don't want water seeping down the wall and/or staining? Would there be any kind of soft foam type stuff I could put between the wood and the dashed wall that would fill all the little gaps between the dash stones etc?
Thanks for sharing, I love this video, I'm wanting to build something similar but with a roof but I cam definitely take inspiration and tips from yours. That paint looked great and went on super smooth. Good idea for that space and love the pizza oven, yum 🎉
Sooo love this, truly what amazes me is the determination you and your partner has on these project's, plus how much savings you both are making for not bringing in the tradesman. Your home is beautiful, keep up the great work I love your video's. 🤩🤩
Tip for fixing timber battens (or posts) to a wall. Fix at one end then level across and fix at the other end, then drill and screw all the way along. Saves trying to keep level while trying to mark multiple holes. 👍
Great job. Stick a rain water gutter / down spout and collection barrel on then put on some clear corrugated sheets and cover the space for year round all weather seating area. Looks great, well done.
Waooo this is cool. in fact i have learnt so much from you guys today i was about giving out a contract to a joiner but this has woken me up, i will give it a go with my wife, thanks Shade well done .
God people are being unnecessarily rude in these comments. Great video! I'm thinking about having a go at adding something similar to the back of my house so this was very useful to watch. Thank you
You are a legend, so I have just started building a pergola, although with a solid roof, think it is still called a pergola, and I used your masking tape method to mark the holes when attaching to the wall, not something I have ever thought off but makes it so much easier, keep up the good work and thanks for the great idea 😊😊
Hi just clicked on the link and bought the post level gizmo. Been looking for one of these, but didn't know what they were called. Thanks for the links. Nice job on your pergola.
Really great effort and result. I've been thinking of doing something similar in my garden so my ever growing grapevine has a place to live. I've used that Cuprinol Duck's back paint before too. I agree, it's not great, it gets algae on it quite quickly and doesn't resist the elements well for long. I have now got some Johnstone's paint which nothing seems to grow on and water beads off. A year now and it has done way better than the Cuprinol Duck's Back did.
fantastic work and great video. in regards to the timber to walls, no need to take post off and on. and then change to masonary bit. then you need and impact driver to drive the masonary screw in. for the cross bar on the wall, you can hammer temp nail into the cement part of brick to hold up while you line up. you should defo invest in a impact driver.
Omg this turned out amazinggg, literally watched the whole way through with my popcorn like wow Shade! Is there anything you can’t do 😭😭 Can’t wait to a house and just renovate from the bottom up - all your videos are saved in my playlist ready for that time 👌🏾😂
Brilliant video and looks great! Im going to do similar and paint anthracite myself. Also thinking of decking the floor but i dont want to get giddy as I always under estimate the amount of work in these sort of projects lol! So a job for another day.
Great job and marking with the masking tape is an excellent idea ! A marksmen pen is quicker and easier but obviously don’t always have one to hand, I’ll definitely remember your way in future 😊
Great job, Shade! This gives me and idea for the small side yard we have that in use for my gardening. Plus, the pergola can be useful for my vining plants to grow on. Thx for the inspiration!😱🤯 🥰❤🤩🔥🥳
Looks really nice, BUT, As the Pergola is attached to the side of the house and next to the boundary of your property, surely you need to apply for and receive planning position, ideally BEFORE you construct!
Absolutely beautiful 💕💕 Can't wait to have a back yard to make one for my family!! 🙏🙏 The outdoor brick oven was genius! 🍕 Thank you for sharing, I love all of your videos 🙌🙌💞💞
I just built one of these and without the masking tape. I drilled my 1st end hole in the wood. Put the wood up against the house brick make sure it level (get a 2nd person to hold and then just mark the brick with the drill. Put the wood down and drill. Put your first bolt in (not tight) and then you can move the wood into position drill the 2nd end hole
I also used screw into the same brackets seem quicker then nails and a hammer. & because I’m rood sheeting mine I used brackets both ends so there no lift …. Good job! I was as proud as you when I completed it

Hahahaha 2 right mate
@@pigmintfilm256 I would use flashing between the wood and dashing, thick enough to mould to the dashing, hope that helps.
You can also put washers between the wood and wall so the wood stands off the wall a few mm to allow any rain moisture to run down the back.
Jack, you changed my life with this advice!
Top tip for anybody else doing this. Paint your timber first when it’s on the ground. Saves time and hassle.
This time I will do it manually with the help of Woodglut designs.
Thanks for sharing, I love this video, I'm wanting to build something similar but with a roof but I cam definitely take inspiration and tips from yours. That paint looked great and went on super smooth. Good idea for that space and love the pizza oven, yum 🎉
Even when you’re a “greasy, sweaty, mess” you still manage to look amazing! The pergola turned out fantastic too btw. Love your channel ❤️
Aww that’s lovely of you ❤️
I can imagine that looking so cute at night with fairy lights!
Need to put some on! will be sooo cute ❤
@@ShadeShannon They do some really nice ones on amazon! Im thinking of getting some myself ❤
Travis perkins and jewsons are the most expensive builders merchants I have ever been in!
That created a really wonderful living space. Love the entire yard, flowers are looking good.
Thanks so much!
Sooo love this, truly what amazes me is the determination you and your partner has on these project's, plus how much savings you both are making for not bringing in the tradesman. Your home is beautiful, keep up the great work I love your video's. 🤩🤩
Thank you! So happy that we can do these DIYs and not spend so much money. I think everyone should give DIY a little bit of a go sometimes ☺️
I'm so excited about this video, I needed normal everyday people goes step by step on this project before we tried it. Thank you
That turned out really nicely .... so satisfying when it all comes together like that!
Tip for fixing timber battens (or posts) to a wall. Fix at one end then level across and fix at the other end, then drill and screw all the way along. Saves trying to keep level while trying to mark multiple holes. 👍
Thank you 🙏🏽
Or when you are alone, just do the middle one, then level and keep going (do most of my stuff alone)
Looks fantastic-thanks for all the detail and explanations, a beginner (me) could actually follow this!
Nice! You’re welcome 😉
This video was invaluable - I have built my own this last weekend and I'm delighted with it! Thanks very much for posting
I’m so glad to hear this!
Your garden looks really nice. You've both work so hard on it and should be so proud
Thanks! 😄
I don't know what was better, the result or how adorable you guys were building it. pizza looks delicious.
Aww thanks 🥰
Great job. Stick a rain water gutter / down spout and collection barrel on then put on some clear corrugated sheets and cover the space for year round all weather seating area. Looks great, well done.
They can't do that because the struts are level , they would need a slight pitch to do that to avoid water accumulation
This is a great video ... You both made the process really easy. The outcome ... your reveal... wow!!
Thank you so much 😊
I think a string of lights would look super cute hanging in those posts.
I typed in UK DIY and this video came up! Really impressed!
That project turn out very nice. Now your whole yard look amazing!

If you put a polycarbonate roof on, you can store things under it when it rains.
You both did a fantastic job. :-)
Ah nice! I do want to put a retractable roof on some how!
Looks really nice, BUT, As the Pergola is attached to the side of the house and next to the boundary of your property, surely you need to apply for and receive planning position, ideally BEFORE you construct!
