  • The Thursday Explorer is a durable and stylish boot, capable of taking on even the most extreme trails and adventures. By combining Vibram's newflex sole for lightweight traction and a goodyear storm welt for maximum water resistance, they have made a boot that is both durable and easy to wear. The addition of Thursdays olive suede makes for a visually stunning boot as well. Enjoy the review!

    The sole will just be glued to the welt and midsole (if applicable). The stitching will be used to attach the upper to the welt.
    When you have thick rubber or foam soles it is usually not possible to stitch through the sole material.
    I know a lot of people think that glued construction is bad but it is how most hiking and mountaineering boots are constructed and even welted boots like this have to rely on glue alone for the outsole unless you are attaching relatively thin soles.

    Hiking boots prefer a softer foam rubber. More impact resistant and better traction. You are right about it not holding up in the long run, but its made for use on softer ground, and then again, thats the point of a replaceable sole.

    Great video! A couple suggestions for future videos: try look at the camera more when talking to us or focus your eyes on one subject so that we have something that we know we should pay attention to. Also, maybe use a longer lens and increase the aperture on your camera to blur the background more so that the background doesn't grab our attention. I also really liked how in the beginning of the video you had a mix of you talking with the boot and switched to action shots; I think it might be nice for the viewer to have that type of format throughout the video. Overall, I'm looking forward to your progress and I'm definitely subbed!

    Thoughts on using these for a canoe trip? My only real use for combat-style boots is portaging and related entry/exit from a canoe into the lake before/after portaging. Have been using jungle boots previously for their active drain holes. Do you think these would dry out overnight after being fully submerged?

    • @NathanKnepper
      @NathanKnepper  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I think jungle boots would be the better choice. These will take longer to dry out. I view them as more of a winter snow boot to wear with thick wool socks.

    • @NathanKnepper

      Interesting, so is i typically the sole its self that fails or the stitching/glue holding it to the upper?

    • @freelancespartan
      @freelancespartan 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Traditionally the sole cracks in half right about an inch behind the ball of the foot where the arch would start.
      The other common fail I get is the boot separating from the sole, but that's probably Bates's poor construction combined with the abuse your average Engineroom mechanic puts his boots through. Lot of seawater, oil, high temp and high humidity atmosphere and walking around on steel floors.
      I get better results from the Belleville Flight deck rated Vibram boots.
      My ship actually updated the local policy and now I can wear whatever black leather safety boots I want, so I snagged a pair of Timberland Pros with a side zip and a Vibram sole. They're a year old and showing no signs of breaking down

    • @NathanKnepper

      The weather safe suede definitely is a lot like nubuck in its texture. Mine were darker when they arrive and over time they have lightened some. They’re not exactly olive and not exactly brown. These Boots are mostly a fashion statement and not for performance, durability or longevity. The leather is really thin and deceivingly saggy as well. I don’t think I’d consider these combat Boots as durable as a pair of Timberland Boots or even Doc Martins which I own a pair of all 3.

      Good review BTW , I have the Captain in brandy but I'm thinking of getting the Captain rugged version for work. I think those soles should hold up well , it's good to have a softer sole for traction and comfort.

      Depends on your style. I think you could definitely wear them for everyday wear. They might get a little toasty in the summer depending on where you live. Overall the style is more like a combat boot and less like a heritage goodyear welted boot.

      @@NathanKnepper in regards to the timbs, are these slimmer than your timberlands? im really diggin the combat boot vibe and the explorers give a more slim look from what i can see compared to a timberland. in this regard. should i order the same size as my timberlands?

    • @NathanKnepper
      @NathanKnepper  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes they are slimmer BUT not as slim as a lot of thursday’s other boots. All in all they have a slimmer profile than timbs but still fit really well. As for sizing, you’d definitely want to go a 1/2 size down from your sneaker size (vans, timbs, nike, adidas, etc) almost all of my boots are size 9.5. I got the explorers in size 10 so I can wear thick wool socks with them in the winter. They’re a little oversized as a result but I have them for a very specific purpose (winter boot). So yeah, definitely half size down to get a good fit. Also I cant say how the other colors look but the olive suede is absolutely amazing!!
